Hubert V. Simmons Negro Leagues Museum Opens at Owings Mills
Opening Day wasn’t just at Camden Yards this year. Over at the Owings Mills
Branch of the Baltimore County Public Library, we had an Opening Day of our
own — the grand opening and ribbon cutting of the brand new Hubert V. Simmons
Museum of Negro Leagues Baseball. The museum, which is spread over all
three floors of the branch, houses photographs, graphic panels, artifacts and
memorabilia of both Maryland and the U.S. Negro Leagues, telling the stories of
the men — and women — who paved the way for today’s integrated leagues. The
second floor is dedicated to the women who played in the Negro Leagues after
being rejected from the all-white All American Girls Baseball League. Women like
Mamie “Peanut” Johnson, who was in attendance at the opening ceremonies of
the museum. She even took a moment before the opening to find her biography, A
Strong Right Arm, in the branch!
Besides the Owings Mills Branch and the museum, the County Campus Metro
Centre facility also houses the Owings Mills campus of the Community College of
Baltimore County (CCBC).
The museum is named for the late Hubert “Bert” Simmons, who played for the
legendary Baltimore Elite Giants in the 1950s. His wife, Audrey Simmons, executive
director of the museum, also spoke at the opening, along with Bert’s lifelong friend
and museum curator, Ray Banks. Baltimore County Executive Kevin Kamenetz,
who played an integral part in bringing the museum to the County Campus Metro
Centre, spoke as well.

BCPL Director James H. Fish, who spoke at the opening ceremonies, said, “This
museum, with its artifacts and exhibits, has an important story to tell. What better
place to tell an important story than a library?”
Readers of every age can explore all things scientific this summer at
Baltimore County Public Library with our science-themed Summer Reading
Club, “Fizz Boom, Read!” The theme fits perfectly with the STEM (Science,
Technology, Engineering and Math) curriculum many schools have adopted.
The Baltimore County Public Library will have plenty of programs to keep
your family reading and learning all
summer. Kids can read to earn
cool stickers and prizes while
they keep their minds active so
they can enter school in the fall
ready to learn and succeed.
Summer Reading Club begins
June 16 and ends August
10, and is open to all ages,
birth through adult. You
can register online at www
.bcpl.info/summerreading
starting May 5, or in person
at your local branch starting
in June. Then just pick up
your gameboard at
the library and start
reading! Preschool
and elementary
p r o g r a m s
age children can collect a sticker for every four activities they complete
or book they read and, once they collect four stickers, they can come in
and choose a prize at their local branch. For teens and tweens, for every
three books read, they can turn in a raffle entry slip for one of eight prizes.
Prizes will be awarded throughout the summer,
including gift cards to Best Buy, Barnes
& Noble, Target, Chipotle and other
businesses. Adults and teens can
join our BCPL Summer Reading
page on Goodreads and read
to win a Kindle. We have
various programs related to
the theme throughout the
summer, including Robot
Art and Electronics Lab,
Magic and Science and
Stuff, Reptiles of the
World and Nanoscience
101. For more information
and to register, visit bcpl.info/
summerreading.

“Taste of the Town” – Great time for a great cause!
More than 300 people had a wonderful time at the 3rd annual “Taste
of the Town” at the Perry Hall Branch on Saturday, May 3. All proceeds
benefitted the Foundation for BCPL’s early childhood literacy efforts.
Guests enjoyed sampling food and drink from 18 area restaurants and
caterers while listening to the sounds of Jazz Plus. The silent auction full
of interesting items also proved to be popular, as guests tried to outbid
each other throughout the evening! While we are still tallying the proceeds
from this event as of press time, our success wouldn’t have been possible
without our corporate sponsors, restaurant sponsors, silent auction donors
and volunteers – we couldn’t have done it without you!

Hubert V. Simmons Negro Leagues Museum Opens at Owings Mills
Opening Day wasn’t just at Camden Yards this year. Over at the Owings Mills
Branch of the Baltimore County Public Library, we had an Opening Day of our
own — the grand opening and ribbon cutting of the brand new Hubert V. Simmons
Museum of Negro Leagues Baseball. The museum, which is spread over all
three floors of the branch, houses photographs, graphic panels, artifacts and
memorabilia of both Maryland and the U.S. Negro Leagues, telling the stories of
the men — and women — who paved the way for today’s integrated leagues. The
second floor is dedicated to the women who played in the Negro Leagues after
being rejected from the all-white All American Girls Baseball League. Women like
Mamie “Peanut” Johnson, who was in attendance at the opening ceremonies of
the museum. She even took a moment before the opening to find her biography, A
Strong Right Arm, in the branch!
Besides the Owings Mills Branch and the museum, the County Campus Metro
Centre facility also houses the Owings Mills campus of the Community College of
Baltimore County (CCBC).
The museum is named for the late Hubert “Bert” Simmons, who played for the
legendary Baltimore Elite Giants in the 1950s. His wife, Audrey Simmons, executive
director of the museum, also spoke at the opening, along with Bert’s lifelong friend
and museum curator, Ray Banks. Baltimore County Executive Kevin Kamenetz,
who played an integral part in bringing the museum to the County Campus Metro
Centre, spoke as well.

BCPL Director James H. Fish, who spoke at the opening ceremonies, said, “This
museum, with its artifacts and exhibits, has an important story to tell. What better
place to tell an important story than a library?”
Readers of every age can explore all things scientific this summer at
Baltimore County Public Library with our science-themed Summer Reading
Club, “Fizz Boom, Read!” The theme fits perfectly with the STEM (Science,
Technology, Engineering and Math) curriculum many schools have adopted.
The Baltimore County Public Library will have plenty of programs to keep
your family reading and learning all
summer. Kids can read to earn
cool stickers and prizes while
they keep their minds active so
they can enter school in the fall
ready to learn and succeed.
Summer Reading Club begins
June 16 and ends August
10, and is open to all ages,
birth through adult. You
can register online at www
.bcpl.info/summerreading
starting May 5, or in person
at your local branch starting
in June. Then just pick up
your gameboard at
the library and start
reading! Preschool
and elementary
p r o g r a m s
age children can collect a sticker for every four activities they complete
or book they read and, once they collect four stickers, they can come in
and choose a prize at their local branch. For teens and tweens, for every
three books read, they can turn in a raffle entry slip for one of eight prizes.
Prizes will be awarded throughout the summer,
including gift cards to Best Buy, Barnes
& Noble, Target, Chipotle and other
businesses. Adults and teens can
join our BCPL Summer Reading
page on Goodreads and read
to win a Kindle. We have
various programs related to
the theme throughout the
summer, including Robot
Art and Electronics Lab,
Magic and Science and
Stuff, Reptiles of the
World and Nanoscience
101. For more information
and to register, visit bcpl.info/
