class descriptions Class Descriptions SKILL LEVEL KEY SEWING/MACHINE CLASSES: BEGINNER Little or no sewing (i.e. construction, patterns) or machine (i.e. serger, sewing) knowledge. INTERMEDIATE Basic sewing (i.e. construction, patterns) or machine (i.e. serger, sewing) understanding. Can easily adjust stitches, tension, accessory feet, etc. ADVANCED Complete understanding of sewing (i.e. construction, patterns) and machines (i.e. serger, sewing). Able to construct a garment/quilt without guidance/assistance. Can upload, manipulate, edit embroidery designs. Complete understanding of sewing terminology. SOFTWARE: BEGINNER Little or no computer/software knowledge. INTERMEDIATE Basic understanding of computers/software. Familiar with keyboards, mouse, external peripherals and equipment. Pictures may not represent actual fabrics in the kits. 2 Class Descriptions NEW TOL ROOMS Certification for New TOL Machine for US and Canadian Dealers To be certified to sell the new TOL machine, each dealership is required to take both Core Class A and Core Class B. You must attend Class A before Class B. If you remove one class from your schedule, the other class will automatically be deleted. Core Class B Core Class A An overview of the new TOL machine as well as features, benefits, and a hands-on introduction to the sewing functions, will be the focus in the first class. You will also leave with an effective sales demo. Marie Eivik, is Marketing Manager for SHP, the distributor of Janome in Norway, Sweden and Denmark. A native of Sweden, she began sewing and selling riding clothes at age 13. Prior to joining the company, Sam had his own custom sewing business in Texas where he designed and created wedding gowns, bridesmaids dresses, home décor, and many other things. Some of Sam’s creations appeared in the opening numbers of the Miss Texas pageant. Whether teaching adults or children, his passion for and love of sewing is apparent. 4 Teachers & Presenters Gregory Garvin Marilyn Gatz Geraldine Gillen Gazmend Gjyrezi Soni Grint Valora Hammond LuAnn Hartley Gregory Garvin, Merchandise Manager at Janome America, first moved to New York to work as an account executive for Matrix Advertising Associates. He then became Web Manager for Sew Fast Sew Easy, where he eventually became Vice President. After taking sewing classes for several years, he managed operations, website and social media; instructed fashion sewing classes; and trained customers in embroidery design and machine operation. Marilyn Gatz began her sewing career more than 35 years ago. She has taught classes on tailoring, machine arts, fabric painting, embellishments, and fashion sewing. She has also designed custom clothing and bridal wear. Marilyn has been a contributor to Janome Digest, Creative Machine, several Chilton sewing books, a guest designer in Mary Mulari’s More Sweatshirts with Style, and Creative Sewing Techniques by Machine. Geraldine Gillen is one of the most respected and knowledgeable members of the Australian sewing community. She is widely recognized for her knowledge of embroidery machines and software. Geraldine has been involved in all facets of the industry, from demonstrating and selling in retail stores, to operating her own school and on-line academy. In addition, she’s held senior management positions with leading manufacturers. Gazmend Gjyrezi is Service and Warehouse Manager for Janome America. Each year he travels to Tokyo and Taiwan to be factory trained and certified on the new machine models. Gazmend is the team leader for developing service DVDs on several recent models. He began his sewing career more than 25 years ago in Europe and joined Janome America in 1993. He is one of Janome’s most sought-after experts for service questions. Soni Grint has been sewing since she was eight, but her embroidery career began when she combined her formal education in Optical Physics/ Computers and her love of fabric and sewing. After working for major sewing machine manufacturers in the US and Europe, Soni is enjoying a brand new adventure with Creative DRAWings® embroidery software, one of the most powerful and elegant automatic digitizing programs on the market today. Valora Hammond joined Janome America in 2002. She began doing custom sewing in high school, expanding to creating garments for contests, stage, and special occasions. She is a graduate of Colorado State University with a secondary teaching degree major and a minor in apparel production. She loves to share her passion and enthusiasm in a classroom setting. Valora is a contributor to Creative Sewing Techniques by Machine. LuAnn Hartley is a Janome Educator who has been in the industry for over 28 years. During that time she has gained a unique knowledge of fabric behavior. While LuAnn enjoys quilting, she is a fabric embellisher at heart and often combines techniques such as free motion machine embroidery, heirloom sewing, quilting and garment construction with stunning results. Her students learn to use their machines to the fullest potential. 5 Teachers & Presenters Ann Hein Pam Holland Keith A. Krauss Michael McDonagh Carol McKinney Amy Meek Terry Mingee Ann Hein is a Janome Educator who began sewing in junior high school. Her first project was a pull-on, elastic waist skirt. After that success she sewed whenever she had the chance--from prom gowns to costumes to a jacket for the guy who would become her husband. Ann has done a little bit of everything over the years, but quilting and embroidery are her favorites. She loves to experiment and try new things. Pam Holland, a native of Australia, is an author, tutor, designer, photographer, cinematographer, judge and illustrator. After a career as a photographer and fashion designer, Pam worked in the quilting industry for over 20 years. She has a reputation for shaping something new from something already established. Pam has won numerous International awards, and currently is in the process of completing three new books. Keith A. Krauss is Counsel at the Genova, Burns & Vernoia law firm in their Newark, New Jersey office and heads the Business Law & Commercial Transactions Practice Group. Mr. Krauss handles all aspects of business advice and transactions on behalf of both existing companies and startups. He provides counsel on handling financing of transactions as well as review and preparation of commercial agreements of all kinds. Michael McDonagh is Executive VP and CFO of Janome America and a Certified Public Accountant. He has primary responsibility for all financial, tax, banking, credit and operational issues. During his career with the company, Michael has had numerous responsibilities for other Janome subsidiaries including Janome Canada, Janome Chile, Janome Mexico, and Jamac Inc. He was stationed in Amsterdam, Holland to launch Janome Europe from 1999-2002. Carol McKinney, a Janome America Educator, won first prize in the 1997 Sulky Challenge and had projects featured in two Sulky concepts books. In addition to having her Cherokee Nations vest featured on Shirley Adams’ PBS program, two of Carol’s Peek-a-Boo Pleats garments were included in Serger Art by Diane Bossom. Threads Magazine featured her machine embroidery lace technique. And she is a contributor to Creative Sewing Techniques by Machine. Amy Meek has traveled the U.S. and Mexico demonstrating and educating on Janome sewing machines, sergers, and software. She has taught sewing, garment construction, and pattern making at every level from children and beginners to advanced techniques in a university setting. Amy loves to share her knowledge of sewing, sewing machines, and accessories with Janome consumers and dealers. Terry Mingee is a freelance educator for Janome America. Terry has been sewing since age six, creating garments, quilts, and décor items. He has long been an enthusiastic Janome owner, with extensive experience with the entire line of machines and accessories. Having over 10 years of experience working with a Janome Only Dealer close to his home, Terry expanded into the Janome Computer Programs starting with the Scan n Sew for the 8000 to advanced skills with the New Digitizer MB v.3 and Cross Stitch Program. Terry is the proud owner of the Janome MB-4 Embroidery Machine and Digitizer programs. 6 Teachers & Presenters Mark Phillips Linda Pidzamecky Rhonda Pierce James Raymer Celine Ross Martie Sandell Kim Schultz Mark Phillips is the Business Development and Product Manager for Wilcom International Pty. Ltd. of Australia, makers of Janome Digitizer software. As the product manager for Janome digitizing products Mark is passionate about providing the best experience for users of Janome Digitizer, which not only covers the software but also education and support. Linda Pidzamecky, Educational Consultant for Janome Canada, has been with Janome for nearly 7 years. Along with visiting dealers regularly to conduct seminars and educate their staff, she is responsible for program creation and implementation, as well as dealer and consumer inquiries whenever necessary. She spent several years at Vogue and Butterick Patterns and creating projects and samples for Domcord Belding, a trim and accessory company. Rhonda Pierce is the Marketing Director for Euro-notions, the USA distributor of SCHMETZ household sewing machine needles. She has the dream job of teaching sewing enthusiasts about the most important 2” piece of steel in their sewing machine — the SCHMETZ needle. She’s presented her “Get To The Point” class to stitch mavens and sewing enthusiasts all over North America. James Raymer has been in the textile industry for more than 25 years. As managing director of Dalco Home Sew, he and artist/ digitizer Norman Gates have spent the past three years creating appliqué design collections for a dealer network. The company offers easy-to-use appliqué kits in more that 50 motifs. Celine Ross is an Educator for Janome Canada. A graduate of Ecole Superieure des Arts et Métiers in Montreal, she specialized in fashion design/ home economics. Celine opened her own independent sewing school in 1983. From a relatively humble beginning, she now has a core of 7 teachers, a yearly registration of over 200 students and a very successful Embroidery Club. She has used Janome machines since the founding of her school. Martie Sandell, Janome Educator, began her career teaching quilting for the Los Angeles College District in the 1970’s. She was one of 15 exhibitors at the first Houston Quilt Market and Festival, selling her patterns. Her garments have been featured nationwide, including the Houston Fashion Show; The American Textile Museum; Great American Quilt Festival in NYC; and Quilter’s Newsletter. Kim Schultz grew up in New Orleans where her mother taught her how to sew at the age of eight. She made her first quilt in 1999 and has been hooked ever since, but also loves garment construction and home dec sewing. Kim has taught both children and adult sewing classes. Her creations have appeared in Janome Digest Magazine, and Creative Sewing Techniques by Machine. Kim loves to travel and share her passion with others. 7 Teachers & Presenters Russ Schwers Margo Shaw Patsy Shields Greg Stavros Liz Thompson Katie Vardijan Ann White Russ Schwers brings a wealth of sales and marketing experience to sewing dealerships. He has been in the Home Sewing, Fabric and Notions business for 8 years, and Northeast District Sales Manager for Janome America since 1996. Prior to that he worked in engineering management and business development for several high-technology start-up companies. Janome Educator Margo Shaw has taught at Janome Institute, AQS Quilt Show Paducah, and other quilt shows and dealerships across the country. Her work has been featured several times in Janome Digest Sewist Showcase. This garment sewist from the South also delights in making dolls and unique articles of home décor. Margo loves to share the creativity and ease-of-use of Janome sewing machines and sergers. Patsy Shields is a Janome Educator whose articles have appeared in Sew News, Sulky of America publications, Sew Fancy by Martha Pullen, Creative Machine Embroidery, Sewing Savvy, Round Bobbin Embroidery, and Quilting Professional. She has appeared on “Quilting in the Heartland” with Sharlene Jorgenson, “Creative Living” with Sheryl Borden, and on “Sew Perfect” with Sandra Betzina. She won the first Certified Master Sewing Educator award in 2007. Greg Stavros is a Service Technician for Janome America. Before coming to Janome, Greg worked in a family-owned sewing and quilting store where he gained experience in sewing machine repair. He joined Janome in 2007. Using his specialized training in machine maintenance, Greg will be teaching classes for the 3160QDC and assisting in others. Liz Thompson, is the Janome and Elna Educator for Western Canada. She founded her own sewing school and sewing supply company in South Africa before moving to Canada. She enjoys a large following among Janome and Elna machine owners across Western Canada and travels extensively to visit dealers’ stores and attend sewing shows. She has also become a regular contributor to the Janomelife blog. Katie Vardijan is a Janome Educator, historical costumer, writer, and maker of pretty things. She has studied millinery (women’s hats) for years, most recently completing a program in London with Rose Cory, former milliner for the Queen Mum. Although she loves historical styles and vintage patterns, Katie spends just as much time playing with the latest techniques and technologies in her studio to create modern clothing, home furnishings, and accessories. Ann White is a Training Coordinator and Customer Service Advisor for Janome America. Years before she joined the company she enjoyed sewing on her Memory Craft 7500, making items from curtains and bed linens to items like Prom dresses and wedding ring cushions for my friends. She’s been in the sewing industry for more than ten years, joining Janome nearly three years ago. 8 Teachers & Presenters Deborah Whittred Deborah Whittred is the Queensland Sales Manager for Janome Australia. She was introduced to hand embroidery by her grandmother at age 8, then in secondary school moved on to drafting and machine sewing. Her first sewing machine was a Janome. Education is a big part of her job as Sales Manager. She enjoys teaching and training dealers on Janome products and sewing techniques. 9
