Sewing & Upholstery Retreat is organized and presented by Kimberley Chagnon of
Kim’s Upholstery and Susan Woodcock of HomeDecGal.
Registration opens on Friday, April 25, 2014 at noon EST.

PRICING
FULL RETREAT ATTENDEE includes two nights lodging in Thornburg Hall (one
bed in a double occupancy room*, private bath and en suite showers), all meals,
snacks, selected classes, handouts, demonstrations and group activities.
Transportation not included.
$695.00 per person
*If you have arranged for a roommate, be prepared to list their name on the
registration form. If you do not list a roommate, one will be assigned for you.
DAY-ONLY ATTENDEE includes all meals, snacks, selected classes, handouts,
demonstrations and group activities. Lodging and transportation are NOT included
and are the responsibility of the attendee.

When you register online, select your class preference from Class
Selection A (two 1 ½ hour classes) or Class Selection B (one 3 hour
class) for both the morning and afternoon sessions. There will be a 30minute break during the morning and afternoon sessions.

CLASS DESCRIPTIONS
MORNING CLASS SELECTION A
Embellished Soft Furnishings with Donna Cash, 1 ½ hours
Learn to make embellishments that can be added to window treatments, pillows and
bedding. Donna will share the techniques to make beautiful mitered flanges and
curved, pleated and twisted banding plus a variety of ruffle trims. To participate
bring a basic sewing kit. Fabric and ribbon will be provided.
Hand Sewn English Curtain with Penny Bruce, 1 ½ hours
In this class you will learn the historic and timeless method of making hand crafted
English curtains. Penny will show a variety of hand sewing techniques for
interlocking layers, creating mitered corners and hems using traditional stitches
including long stich, ladder stitch and herringbone stitch. To participate bring 1 ½
yards of fabric and a basic sewing kit. Lining and interlining will be provided.

MORNING CLASS SELECTION B
Professional Upholstery Techniques with Kim Chagnon, 3 hours
Upholstery is an art that you learn by doing! In this class you see how professional
upholsterers approach covering furniture from frame to fabric. Kim will share her
favorite products and supplies, and teach you how to tie springs, add padding
materials, make relief cuts around obstacles, and staple with confidence. To
participate bring a pair of scissors. Upholstery fabric and supplies will be provided.
AFTERNOON CLASS SELECTION A
Pleating to Pattern with Penny Bruce, 1 ½ hours
In this class, Penny will show how master curtain makers create balance and harmony
by using the fabric design to enhance the appearance of the pleats. This technique
requires a keen eye, and careful planning with extraordinary results. Attendees will
benefit from having prior knowledge of how to construct basic pleated draperies. To
participate bring a calculator, scissors and pins. Fabric will be provided.
Creating a Square Bolster with Donna Cash, 1 ½ hours
Square bolster pillows are a unique addition to your room décor. In this class you
will see how to plan, cut and sew square bolsters. Donna will show how to join welt
and twist cord, add an invisible zipper, insert buttons and mix and match fabrics and
trims for a pillow that says, “wow – look at me!”
AFTERNOON CLASS SELECTION B
Slipcovers for Wood Framed Chairs with Susan Woodcock, 3 hours
Slipcovers are more popular than ever, and the techniques used can be incorporated
into pillow and window treatment designs. In this class you will learn how to
slipcover wood framed furniture such as dining or side chairs. You will see how to
make patterns, work around backs, arms and legs, make continuous boxing, ruffled
and pleated skirts and how to create a crowned-cushion chair seat. To participate
bring a basic sewing kit. Fabric will be provided.
*Basic sewing kit should include scissors, needles and thread, measuring tape & pins.

GROUP ACTIVITIES
CONNECT AND LEARN: INSTRUCTOR Q & A
On Monday evening October 6, 2014 after dinner, the retreat instructors will be
available for informal conversations, ready to answer your questions, offer assistance
and mentoring. With a combined 85 years of experience in the soft furnishings
industry, our instructors have a unique perspective and expansive knowledge on
topics from technique and sources to self-improvement and owning a business.
HANDS-ON DEMONSTRATIONS
On Tuesday morning, October 7, 2014 from 8:30 to 10:30 am, join all the
instructors for interactive demonstrations in Efird Hall. Visit each education-station
to see, learn and try a new sewing, upholstery or design technique.

See how to cut the base wood, plan the pattern and attach buttons for tufted
furniture pieces like ottomans and headboards.
Custom Buttons with a Twist - Donna Cash
See how to make customized covered buttons with textured designs

with recent cord safety standards.

See how to turn a flat piece of fabric into a beautiful pin-tucked design used
to make an elegant custom pillow.

Penny Bruce is the owner of Denton Drapes in Milton Keynes, UK, specializing
in handmade couture curtains and soft furnishings for interior designers and
domestic customers. Denton Drapes provides a complete service from design to
installation and offers hands-on curtain making and soft furnishings training and
observer days in the workroom. In business since 1997, she is a member of the
Association of Master Upholsterers and Soft Furnishers, and became a director of
their board in October 2012. Penny produces instructional blogs and articles,
several of which have been published in Drapery & Design Professional magazine.
Her work can be seen at www.dentondrapes.co.uk with daily updates on the
Denton Drapes facebook page.
Donna Cash owns Designs by Donna, a soft furnishings design and fabrication
studio, opened in 1989 and located in Flowery Branch, Georgia. In addition to
working with wholesale and retail clients, Donna conducts private training on
workroom fabrication techniques in her workroom or yours. She also presents
group seminars on many workroom, design and business topics for the home décor
industry. Donna is a regular contributor to Drapery & Design Professional magazine
and conducts webinars for the Window Fashions Certified Professional program.
She is a member of Designers Workroom Council and Window Coverings
Association of America. Donna is president of the WCAA Atlanta chapter.
Kim Chagnon owns Kim’s Upholstery, providing custom upholstery,
slipcovers, custom window treatments and design services since 1996. In 1999 her
husband Bill Chagnon joined the business. In 2005 Kim joined the Window
Covering Association of America, and in January 2010 became president of the
Eastern Massachusetts WCAA Chapter, and accepted a position on the national
WCAA board of directors, serving as Secretary until June 2013. Visit Kim’s

is co-creator of the Sewing & Upholstery Retreat.
Susan Woodcock owns HomeDecGal.com, a how-to sewing and decorating
resource. She previously owned a wholesale custom drapery workroom, serving
interior design professionals for over twenty years. Susan is the former editor-inchief for the trade magazine Drapery & Design Professional, and has also worked in
marketing and brand management. She has been teaching professionally for over
ten years, has been published in many sewing and decorating books, magazines and
blogs, and is a featured instructor for Craftsy.com. Susan is a member of the
Greater Charlotte Workroom Association and co-creator of the Sewing &
Upholstery Retreat.

VENUE INFORMATION
Lutheridge Camp and Retreat Center is located in the mountains, just south of Ashevilee, NC, and
just 2 miles from the Asheville Regional Airport at 2049 Upper Laurel Drive, Arden, NC 28704.
This 160-acre, gated retreat has onsite hiking trails, fitness center, 24-hour guest service staff,
professionally trained chef and a variety of lodging, camp and conference facilities. Lutheridge is
operated by Novus Way Conferences, with driving directions, a site map, photos and more
information available on their website www.novusway.com.

Lutheridge is located in a natural setting with a camp atmosphere. Bring casual clothes and
comfortable shoes for walking on woodland paths and hills. Layered clothing is recommended.
Temperatures can range from the sixties during the day to the low forties in the evenings.
Hotels and shopping centers are located near the entrance to Lutheridge.
Lodging is in Thornburg Hall. Rooms have private half baths and en suite showers, shared with the
neighboring room. Sheets, towels, soap and shampoo provided; bring hair dryers.
Meals are served buffet style. Selections have been made to accommodate all preferences so you
can select the best food options for your diet. If you have a food allergy, or a specific dietary
request please let us know.
Wireless internet is available in Thornburg Hall and Efird Hall.
Alcohol is not sold at Lutheridge, but you may bring alcoholic beverages for your personal
enjoyment. Lutheridge requests that you drink responsibly, do not consume alcohol in front of
underage visitors, and dispose of empty bottles and cans properly.
