C O M NATIONAL DIRECTOR REPORT The following report is from HBASE National Director, Kim Hefner-Hines of Allen Homes, Inc., who recently attended the NAHB Fall Board Meeting in Phoenix, AZ in September. “The Members Have Spoken”…..that’s what I keep hearing even a week AFTER we returned from Fall Board in Phoenix. We experienced probably the most interes ng mee ngs in the last decade, and I truly believe that things are going to change at NAHB. They must…. Star ng the week at Exec Board, we became aware pre y quickly that the Proposed Bylaw change to have a MINIMUM of two board mee ngs annually (therefore cu ng Fall Board for a me) was going to be the hot topic of the week. A er Exec Board, we heard details from Senior Officers in subcommi ees, full com‐ mi ees, caucus and also at the full board mee ng about their plan. Emo ons were deep on both sides, and truthfully, neither side is WRONG. Both sides are passionate. Although Fall Board is staying for 2015 for now, I can tell you that it now seems like everything is on the chopping block. Members want our Associa on to be viable force going into the future and changes ARE going to be made. For the record, I was one of a small group that suggested cu ng Summer Exec Board out, but that sugges on got shot down immediately….I just really felt like the price tag for that mee ng was horrifically high for the small amount of people it serves. We’ll be back at it again in January at IBS, and I can assure you that members are talking. This will eventually be a good thing for NAHB, but unfortunately it’s divided people in the interim. dollars are going. The associates commi ee is at 95% par cipa on in BUILD‐PAC, and Associ‐ ates overall have given $280,000.00. Overall, we’ve raised (as an Associa on) over 2.2 million during this cycle and have just over $500,000 le to raise before the end of the year. Dianne Beaton’s name for that posi on. Dianne is well known to a lot of South Dakotans and will do a great job for us. This subcommi ee is also working on the BEAM Award, Bill Polley Award and Associate of the Year award. Remember that the 2013 award went to Paul Nelsen of the HBASE, so this award is near and dear to us. We will be working with the 20 CLUB PROGRAM at NAHB to decide whether to start a 20 CLUB for associate members. There are over 26 of these CLUBS at NAHB right now, serving build‐ ers only. Associates have indicated that they, too, would like to share ideas in a 20 CLUB (the club is a program where 20 non‐compe ve NAHB Members are placed in a group with the sold purposed to exchange ideas to be er their own business prac ces and improve their bo om line). Sta s cs clearly show that by the 3rd year of membership, members of a 20 CLUB have DOUBLED their net profit….so it’s a great program for builders (and hopefully now for Associates as well) – STAY TUNED for more info! We will also be nomina ng an Associate to serve as the BUILD‐PAC Associate Vice Chair. This posi on is a very coveted job and we have three worthy candidates. Our full commi ee Leadership and recogni on – January 21st will be the Associate Awards Breakfast. Please plan will hold a conference call to discuss each candi‐ to a end (Builders and Associates), as this is a date’s qualifica ons. A nominee will be sent to very special day for all Associates. BUILD‐PAC in October. Designa ons and training – We will once again be having an ASSOCIATES ORIENTATION at IBS. This session is crucial to associates wan ng to know how not only to navigate thru all that IBS offers, but also learn all about a ending com‐ mi ee mee ngs at various board mee ngs. We’ll give Associates all the info they need to feel comfortable walking into commi ees, cau‐ cus and board. ALL Associates should a end in January 2015. Watch your email and the HBA News for informa on on me and date. Lastly, the Associates are now allowed one seat on the Budget and Finance commi ee. We will Associate Outreach Network – In this com‐ be sending our recommenda on to senior lead‐ mi ee, we discussed many NON‐DUE REVENUE ership in October on who we’d like to have ideas that have worked for various locals. We’ll serve. This is a very pres gious commi ee, so be pos ng these ideas online and in social me‐ we’ll be ve ng any interested par es in the end dia. We are also going to be pu ng out infor‐ On to Associate ma ers. Since my “pre‐chair of Sept. ji ers” are now over (thank you Candi), I can tell ma on to members of things the “they wish you that the Associates are hard at work ge ng they’d known sooner” about their local HBA and Thank you for this wonderful opportunity to NAHB commi ees.
