MUTT MARCH UPDATE It was a perfect day....We couldn’t have asked for anything more!!! Our wishes for wonderful weather became a reality on September 10, as over 100 dogs and their owners strolled through the park. Whether they purchased clothing for their pups, baked goods for their bellies or feather extensions for their furry friends, there were smiles and laughter all around us. We began our day with the Blessing of the Pets, shopping at the many vendors and registering for the Mutt March and the additional contests. From Chihuahuas to Great Danes, there were over 70 pets registered to walk in the actual Mutt March parade. This number was at an all-time high! It was breathtaking and emotional, at best, to see so many people involved and supporting the Humane Society. The range of supporters came from downstate, as well as Up North. The route of the parade was extended a bit to give pet owners a little more time to show off their pets. Our Grand Marshall, Mike Pugh, did a wonderful job leading the way. We had many sponsors this year and w e would like to send a special “Thank You” to Ted Prusinski for doing “most” of the footwork. The contests were very entertaining and OCHS congratulates all of the winners! The Humane Society adopted out two dogs and four puppies and microchipped seven dogs. All in all, it was an uplifting experience! We grossed over $9,000 and netted over $7,000. There were also over $1,300 in donated gift certificates that were raffled off throughout the day. We still have one more gift basket to raffle off at the shelter (valued at over $100). Tickets are $1.00 each or one free entry to each new adopter. This raffle will take place October 31. Stop in and get your tickets soon! The owners are Brian & Barb Allaire. The raffle netted $188. ********* The Lake Ogemaw Summer Resort Association held a golf outing Sept. 10 and all proceeds were donated to OCHS. Their check amounted to $750. ********* Many thanks to both organizations!! Planned Giving During Difficult Economic Times During difficult economic times, it may be hard to consider planned giving and your philanthropic goals when you’re looking at your own bottom line. However, there are several planned giving options that allow you to make charitable gifts and avoid or reduce gift and estate taxes, all while meeting your own financial needs; Charitable Bequests A charitable bequest occurs when you choose to name Ogemaw County Humane Society in your will. You can determine when and how your assets will be distributed, change your terms at any time if your financial situation changes and you can designate your donations to a specific program at Ogemaw County Humane Society if you desire. In addition, charitable bequests can reduce or even eliminate your estate taxes. Charitable Lead Trusts Charitable Lead Trusts pays income to Ogemaw County Humane Society, typically for a set number of years. The trust remainder is payable to the giver or his or her heirs. Charitable Lead Trusts are a fantastic option when interest rates are low, as the IRS usually anticipates the value of the assets going back to your heirs will be low and won’t increase . In addition, you’re making animpact with the Ogemaw County Humane Society TODAY instead of later. In memory of........ by West Branch Veterinary Britney for Holly Groth Ginger for the Hickmott’s Ziggy for Kelly & Jeff Searfoss Tonto for the Baker’s Lacey for the Bee’s Bud for the Oliver’s Tia for the Horn’s Brutus for the Jernigan’s Flower for the Courtemanche’s Retirement Plan Assets When your retirement passes directly to your heirs, a sizeable portion of the funds could be lost to taxes. But when you designate Ogemaw County Humane Society as a beneficiary of your retirement funds, you make a sizeable charitable gift at little cost to your heirs while relieving their tax burdens. That’s because Ogemaw County Humane Society is a tax-exempt organization, which means those retirement funds qualify for an estate tax deduction and can also be distributed free of income tax. A gift of your retirement plan assets allows you to make a significant charitable gift while relieving your heirs of tax burdens. In Loving Memory of... Hazel Butler by Don & Sandy Hodgins Ron Erickson by Bill and Jan Allen, LaDonna Schultz and Don & JoAnn Rathburn Pathways for Pets We recently received our shipment of Pathways for Pets bricks. We are in the process of placing the bricks on the pathway to the shelter. If you have purchased a brick from us, stop in at the shelter and see it. These bricks were purchased as a way to honor someone special, to remember a loved one or a pet and is also a great way to acknowledge special occasions such as births, weddings and/or the birth or passing of a pet. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Inside the Shelter As summer turns to fall, we like to look back and reflect on our achievements. We have had a “variety” of new volunteers helping us at the shelter and feel very grateful to have them around. Sadly, they leave us as quickly as they come. Most of them must go back to school or move on to better themselves. We do appreciate all they do for us! We also have our “regular” volunteers that come in and help us faithfully! You all know who you are and we want you to know that you are appreciated more than you know. With the “sudden” change of management and “rebuilding” of the shelter, we are proud to be involved with such wonderful people. As we move into winter, and yet another project, we have watched the kennels fill up with the most lovable animals. We can’t help but mention that it has been hard to keep the kennel and yard area clean. Because of this, our backyard is being upgraded to a minimum of 20 enclosed kennels. They will be placed on cement and have metal roofs to keep out the rain, snow and sun. This will make cleaning in the mornings much easier and the dogs will be able to spend more time outside. There will still be two yards for them to run and play in. The back side of the building will be repaired from the dog’s past shenanigans. They will not be able to jump on the building or eat the door frames anymore! We have also added a large kennel area for puppies only so they may get their much needed exercise. This will also help them understand the importance of potty training! We are looking forward to these upgrades—they will make our residents much happier and healthier. Please feel free to stop in and see the improvements!
