SUSTAINABLE 2Rs + 1S PROJECT IN KENYA AND PAKISTAN R E S P O N S I B L E C O N S U M P T I O N A N D P R O D U C T I O N GROUP ONE TEAM MEMBERS ESTHER MUKAMI WAHOME CHUCK CHUAN NG FIONA LATABO KINGSLEY OLUCHI UGWUANYI NIHAL FARID KHATTAK BETTY UWIMANA ACU SUMMER SCHOOL 2016, KIGALI, RWANDA INTRODUCTION Facts About Global Food Wastage • 1.3 tonnes of food are wasted yearly and 1 billion people are undernourished and hungry • Fruits and vegetables have the highest wastage rate ds Relevance To SDG Goal 12 • By 2030, half per capita global food waste at the retail and consumer level and reduce food losses • By 2030, reduced waste generation through prevention, reduction, recycling and reuse University of Nairobi (UoN), Kenya • 30-40% of food produced in sub-Saharan Africa is wasted • Nairobi’s population of 4 million generates 3,200 tonnes of waste daily • UoN has over 60,000 students • Tops in Kenya’s university rankings and ranked 7th in Africa • Organic waste is the most common type of waste found in institutions, approx. 82% National University of Sciences and Technology (NUST), Pakistan • 6th most populous country in the world • 20 million tonnes of solid waste produced annually • 40% of food produced is wasted yearly • 4 million children die annually from waste-related diseases • NUST has about 15,000 students • Among the next top 50 young universities in the world PROJECT OBJECTIVES AND IMPACTS Objectives 1. To position universities and youth in the sustainability chain of integrated waste management system through separation at source 2. To influence the need of universities and youth to work to achieve Goal 12 of the SDGs by reducing generation of food waste Impacts 1. Promote waste separation at source (food waste and non-food waste) culture in the cafeterias and hostel messes instead of one-bin-for-all-waste practice 2. Provide opportunity for students who use cafeterias and hostel messes to have personal hands-on experience to achieve Goal 12 of the SDGs 3. Initiate the environmentally sustainable process of integrated waste management 4. Create and enhance public awareness about the importance of food waste separation at source SWOT Analysis Strengths: Simple and feasible concept of waste management (food and non-food waste separation) Weaknesses: Reluctance to abide by the principle of separation of food waste Opportunities: Organic (food) waste could be reused for other beneficial purposes Threats: Collection and storage of food waste may attract unwanted pests and bad odour Project Method 1. Planning and Preparation Phase: • Discussion and team formation • Communication with universities administrative management 2. Publicity and Awareness Phase: • Poster and flyer design and distribution • Dissemination of information via social media 3. Implementation and Enforcement Phase: • Provide training for cafeteria and hostel workers • Installation of separate containers (bins) • Public announcement and notice of project implementation 4. Monitoring and Further Development Phase: • Site visits to the waste separation containers (bins) • Collect random survey and feedbacks from the students • Improvise and make better adaptation on the existing project Project Timeline BENEFICIARIES AND STAKEHOLDERS University of Nairobi UoN students Student organizations National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) Nairobi County Council Taka Kenya Ltd National University of Sciences and Technology NUST students Student organizations Pakistan Council for Scientific and Industrial Research Society for Conservation and Protection of Environment Pakistan Environmental Protection Agency Sustainable Development Foundation PROJECT DETAILS SMART Analysis Specific: Separation and reduction food and non-food waste Measurable: Waste separated in different bins and composting of food waste Achievable: Fundamental understanding and awareness to encourage students for separation of waste at source Relevance: The ultimate key to proper waste management will be separation of waste at source Time-bound: The project will start within the cafeterias/ hostel messes for the first 6 months and slowly expanded to a bigger scale RESEARCH POSTER PRESENTATION DESIGN © 2015 www.PosterPresentations.com BUDGET Expenditure (2016-2017) Printing 1.Posters and signage (200 sets) 2.Flyers (900 copies) Materials 1.Collection bins (100 units) 2.Plastic bags (1500 units) Unit Price (USD) Amount (USD) 0.5 0.01 100 90 1 0.04 100 60 USD 350 Sources of Funding (2016-2017) Sponsorships and in-kind contribution 1.Support from the universities 2.Donation drive 3.Crowd funding Unit Price (USD) Amount (USD) 200 100 100 200 100 100 USD 400
