The week that was….
What exciting news we had at Ungarie Central
School on Tuesday. Our girls’ basketball team
travelled to Orange to play Calare Public
School in the final of the Western Area
basketball competition. Calare Public School
defeated us in the final of the Western Area
netball competition earlier this year so we
were really looking for a win this time. The
girls played strong all game and defeated
Calare PS 43-11. A huge thank you to Justine
Henley for her outstanding coaching over the
year. The girls will travel to Bathurst on
Monday to play in the NSW PSSA Basketball
finals. They are one of the top 16 teams in the
state. What an amazing effort! I look forward
to cheering for the girls on Monday.
We’ve had such a busy week this week, with
many visitors to the school. Yesterday we had
Lisa from the FRS here to work with some of
our families. Nicola Johnston, our School
Counsellor was also at school working with
teachers and students. Sally Russell from the
Lake Cowal Conservation Centre was also here
yesterday with Fizzics Education, working
with Years 7-10, The robotics was definitely a
hit with the students! Yesterday Bryson
Snowden, a Rugby League development
officer, was at school to finish off the
Backyard League program. Bryson worked
with students from K-10, teaching students the
importance of team work. Today Libby
Trembath, Senior Pathways Officer, is
spending time with Mrs Noble and Mr Dodhy.
They will be going over our documentation to
prepare us for our VET (Vocational Education
and Training) audit next term. Phew, what a
week!
Tomorrow, our primary boys cricket team
were heading to Dubbo to play the next round
in the Western Area cricket knockout. With the
predicted rain and the already wet conditions
this game has been postponed. We will notify
parents as soon as a new date is worked out.
Until next week!

Forces inquiry based learning/project: Students have been using
an outline to guide the direction of their learning but have been
given the option of choosing their learning activities in this unit.
Activities students have chosen to pursue lately have included
investigating the effects of bringing like and different poles of
magnets together under a layer of iron filings, so they could see
the magnetic field and what was happening beyond what the
naked eye could see. Many students used the Van der Graff
generator to experiment with electrostatic forces - we've
discovered that Molly, Michelene and Kadee's hair can well and
truly be raised by the static electricity generated!
7/8 ENGLISH
Recently Year 7/8 completed an assessment
task focussing on drama. They dressed as
fairytale characters and acted out a ‘Mystery
Party’ (similar to ‘Host a Murder’) to
determine who had kidnapped Cinderella and
Prince Charming on their wedding day! The
students had been given clues to provide
them with information they could use to
answer questions from the other characters to
determine the culprit. Rapunzel with the
guilty character!

SYDNEY RECORDER TRIP
Day 1: Tuesday 23rd August
The Sydney Recorder team assembled at UCS on Tuesday morning, ready to head to Sydney on the school bus with
Jason at the helm. The 8am departure was delayed a little when Potters’ dog Coota decided he was coming too and
refused to be coaxed off the bus!
Our first stop was for morning tea at the park in Harden. Many thanks to the mothers who made goodies for us to take
on the trip; we were still enjoying Vanessa Williams’ slices on the way home!
Lunch was at the park in Goulburn where the students (and Mark) had a run on the play equipment. Sammy had an
upset tummy later in the trip, but we’re sure it had nothing to do with the multiple goes she had on the spinning wheel!
We arrived at the YHA in the Rocks at about 3.30 with no trouble despite the need to take a new route because George
Street was blocked off in places. Well done to Jason and his navigators, Mark and Jen!
After settling into our rooms Jason drove us over to Darling Harbour and we had an early tea at the food court before
walking over to the Lyric Theatre to see “Singing in the Rain”. Our seats were much closer to the stage than last year
and everyone enjoyed the costumes, singing and dancing and the truly awful voice of Lina Lamont! The rain scenes in
particular were fantastic, and the “wet zone” extended far beyond the first few rows!
After grabbing an icecream we walked back to the YHA and turned in for the night.
Day 2: Wednesday 24th August
After breakfast (7.30 on both days) we walked up to Centrepoint Tower, purchasing some overpriced plastic ponchos on
the way as it began to rain, continuing all day. After 5 trips, this is the first time that we have had rain, so we can’t
complain too much. Besides, the ponchos looked pretty special!
The rain cleared enough for us to be able to get a good view of the closer parts of Sydney from the tower and Mrs
Mason and Noah even performed “Pink Panther” for the staff while waiting for the return elevator. We had lunch in
the building before heading back down to the Opera House in the rain, ponchos on and heads down!
Checking in at the Opera House, the Descant 1s sat with Mrs Mason, and the Descant 2s sat with Mrs Wilson and
rehearsed for 2 hours. We also got to hear the choral group rehearsing during our break.
Back out into the rain and we trudged back to the YHA, got ready for the evening concert and had tea at the Orient
Hotel. While we were there, the rain began to bucket down, and we got our umbrellas out for the walk to the Opera
House.
The concert went very well and we rewarded ourselves with the (now) traditional gelatos on the way back to the YHA.
Day 3: Thursday 25th August
The sun came out today (of course!) and we were able to pack up and be out of the hostel shortly after 8.30. With
everyone a little tired (the football and netball finals on the weekend plus our trip have made for a big week) we
decided to forgo the markets and stop in Goulburn for lunch, trying out several of the local eateries. A quick pit stop at
the Harden park and a couple of stops in West Wyalong and we were back at UCS by about 4.30.
Congratulations to all our students on their excellent behaviour, and many thanks to the parents who accompanied us.
It was an excellent excursion and our students played well on the night. We have been asked to perform at the Art
Exhibition, so students need
to keep rehearsing their pieces
(we will be able to use our
books on the day) and we will
continue to meet on Tuesday
lunchtimes to practise.

SCHOOL HAPPENINGS
UCS supports World Duchenne Awareness Day 16
UCS YUM students Jack Wason, Isabelle Archibald and
Jared Robb along with their teacher Mrs McClintock used
the alternative timetable on Monday 5th September to
their advantage and spent the day proof reading and
making corrections to their cookbook.
Year 9/10 Food Technology were
amazed to learn that you could peel a
tomato! They them made ‘homemade’
pasta sauce using fresh tomatoes and
tinned tomatoes. These sauces were
compared with a bottled pasta sauce.
The fresh tomato sauce came out the
winner.
With limited students at school due
to water cutting roads on Monday
5th Sept, K-6 students used problem
solving skills to build structures to
support an egg. They could only
use items found in the playground
and then the structure was dropped
from the top of a ladder to test its
durability.
PRIMARY GIRLS BASKETBALL
What a spectacular game of basketball on Tuesday 6th September! It was well worth getting up early and traveling the
distance to Orange to play Calare in the Western Region grand-final.
Ungarie came out all guns blazing right from the first jump! They certainly made everyone on the sidelines sit up and
take note, that's for sure. If our coffee didn't wake the Ungarie mums up, the girl’s great start definitely did!
At the end of the first quarter the score was 12-4 Ungarie. The girls continued to drive the ball into attack down the
court and feed the ball into the key when the second quarter commenced. All team members displayed some great
defence, guarding their opposition, intercepting when needed and rebounding exceptionally well.
Every player contributed. It was wonderful to watch how the girls all worked out that they had a job to do and how they
were going to rely on each other to get that job done. What clever thinking girls.
Ella McRae, Tess Henley, Abby Wason, Georgia Wilson, Ella Payne, Hayley Wallace and Sammy Rutledge are to be
commended on their wonderful display of sportsmanship and behaviour. Congratulations and well done girls. You are
the Western Region champions. The final score was Ungarie 43 – Calare 11.
A huge thank you to Justine Henley. We are so lucky to have you as our coach, your time, effort and expertise are
greatly appreciated. A special thank you to Emma for scoring and for everyone that assisted with travel.
The girls will now travel to Bathurst on Monday 12th September for the PSSA State Basketball Finals. We wish you all the
very best girls.

CULTURAL PERFORMANCE
Matthew Doyle visited Ungarie on Wednesday 24th August. Matthew entertained the students with Aboriginal songs
and dances and then encouraged large amounts of audience interaction by having students (and teachers) playing

THE UNGARIE BITE! ISSUE 4: SEPTEMBER 2016
Dear parents, carers and community of Ungarie Central School
Welcome to Issue 4 of the Bite!
In this issue we will look at the role that Grains and Cereals play in our diet
and their importance for our bodies to function properly.
Issue 4: September 2016
Grains and Cereals make up one of the five food groups. The Australian
Dietary Guidelines recommend eating a wide variety of mostly whole grain
and/or high fibre varieties of grains and cereal.
It is important to try and limited refined grains as these types of grains are
commonly used in processed foods like biscuits and cakes. Processed foods
have large amounts of added sugars, fats and often salt and generally have no
nutritional value.
So try and choose wholemeal or wholegrain breads and cereals whenever
you can.
Siobhain Howard
Project Officer Food Security
Grains and Cereals
Why are they good for us?
Cereals and grains have carbohydrates
in them – Carbohydrates main job is to
provide energy to feed our brains and
fuel our bodies. Grains are an essential
part of a healthy diet, providing
nutrients and energy for a child’s normal
growth and development.
Cereals and grains also contain protein, a
wide range of minerals and vitamins and
are a good source of fibre. Fibre helps
move food easily through your intestines
and helps to prevent constipation.
