Saving Takes TIME and HARD WORK
Have you ever settled for a smaller, less interesting toy at the toy store just because you didn’t have
enough money to buy the one that you really wanted? The smaller toy is fun for a while, but you
probably found yourself thinking about and wishing for the bigger, better and more expensive
toy. With some patience and hard work, you can save enough money to go back to that store
and get that toy! Here’s how:
− Set your goal. Know what you’re saving for and how much money you’ll need to buy it.
−
Find ways to earn extra money. Ask your mom, dad, or grandparents if there are chores you can do around the house to earn money.
−
Keep your money in a safe place. A piggybank or a coin jar can help you keep track of your money and help you avoid losing it.
−
Remember that every penny counts. A quarter may seem like a small amount of money, but don’t forget that it only takes four quarters to equal one whole dollar!
−
Make your money earn more money! Ask your mom or dad to bring you in to the Credit Union so you can deposit your savings into your Kidz Club Account where it will earn interest.
No Money? Borrowing Isn’t Just for Grownups
By Jordan, age 11
When you ask a friend to lend you money, the first thing you need is a good reason for
borrowing. Otherwise, your friend might think it isn’t an important issue and decide not to lend
you the money at all. For example, you want to borrow money from a friend for a Snickers bar
after you just spent all your money on three other candy bars. Your friend might think you have
had enough and say, “No.”
Second is to decide how you will pay your friend back before you borrow money. Make sure
you have a way or a plan to pay her back as soon as possible. If you don’t pay your friend
back at all, she might think that you can’t be trusted and probably won’t lend you money when
you really need it. Sometimes, when you take a long time to pay your friend back, it can get
uncomfortable and affect your friendship. My parents once needed cash to pay for lunch at a
restaurant that only accepted cash. I proudly paid for lunch and they paid me back. It made
me feel good that I saved them.
Plus, whenever something like that happens, they always immediately go to the ATM and pay
me back. I know they will always pay me back quickly so I have no problem lending them cash.
When you borrow money from someone, you are going into debt. Going into debt means you
owe money. You are going into debt even if you borrow money from your parents or your siblings.
Both lending and borrowing can be risky, because if your friend is indebted to you he may
never give the money back to you. Or you may be the one borrowing and never pay him back,
thus ruining your friendship.
Learning how to borrow is a good thing, as long as you’re responsible. Just remember that when
you borrow money it must be paid back. Borrowing prepares you to be grown up and know
the pressures of being an adult. Despite the risks, it’s worth it to get the things you need and
sometimes want.

YOUTH SEMINARS FOR PARENTS
Scientific Secrets for Raising Kids Who Thrive
Monday & Wednesday Mornings at 10:00 a.m. (Beginning August 18th)
Raising children is one of the most rewarding and important, yet challenging, endeavors a person can undertake. To lament that babies are born
without instruction manuals is a cliché, but it’s a sentiment rooted in the uncertainty many parents feel as they make day-to-day decisions they hope
will help their children blossom into healthy, well-adjusted, intelligent adults.
That’s not to say that advice—solicited and otherwise—isn’t plentiful. There are literally thousands of books on the subject and a multitude of websites
devoted to parenting. There are also numerous books and articles addressing specific findings from the science of child development. What’s been
lacking, however, are sources of reliable advice that bring together the scientific research and its real-world applications.
Scientific Secrets for Raising Kids Who Thrive offers a unique compendium of scientific advice and insight for better parenting. In 24 highly engaging
lectures, Professor Peter M. Vishton of The College of William & Mary presents research conducted by an array of cognitive scientists as he illuminates
what their findings reveal about the things parents—as well as grandparents, teachers, daycare providers, coaches, and others who work with young
people—can actively do to promote children’s long-term development right from birth. As an expert in the cognitive development of early childhood
and a parent, he delivers a wealth of practical tips designed to help children reach their full potential intellectually, emotionally, physically, and socially.
And he supports it all with careful, systematic research culled from the latest scientific literature.
Beginning August 18th join us on Monday and Wednesday mornings at 10:00 a.m. in our Community Room. These sessions are free to our members
