2013 Annual Report - Kate Duncan Smith DAR School
2013 Annual Report Kate Duncan Smith DAR School Gem” of Gunter Mountain The “ Mission Statement It is the mission of the Kate Duncan Smith DAR School to educate the boys and girls of Gunter Mountain. We believe the privilege of a sound education is a heritage which should be enjoyed by all the citizens of our country. We believe all our children should be afforded such advantages as shall develop in them the largest capacities for performing the duties of American citizenship and to enlighten them in the knowledge and practice of pure and noble citizenship. We further believe the school environment should be disciplined with emphasis on positive attitudes and academic excellence which will nurture in our students the desire to cherish, maintain and extend the institutions of American freedom to foster true patriotism and love of country, and to aid in securing for mankind all the blessings of liberty. With high expectations, purposes and standards, the KDS DAR School accepts the mission to educate the youth of Gunter Mountain. Kds Dar School Board of Trustees KDS EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE Peggy S. Young, TX, President General, NSDAR Rita P. Horton, AL, Vice President General; Honorary Chairman for Life Tammy B. Clemons, AL, Advisor to the President General Yvonne S. Boone, IA, Parliamentarian Chairman’s Message Many exciting changes took place at Kate Duncan Smith DAR School in 2013. A challenge I issued in 2011 became a reality as the total renovation of the restrooms in the Gary W. Cox Primary Building was completed during the summer months. The friends and loyal supporters of the school once again came through with generous contributions enabling us to meet this need for the students and teachers who have classes in that building. On a personal note, 2013 marked the end of my first term as Chairman of the Board of Trustees. None of the milestones achieved in the past three years would have been possible without KDS Board of Trustees Chairman the support of the KDS Peggy S. Johnson Executive Committee and members of the Board of Trustees. These dedicated individuals devote their time and talents to ensuring the efficient operation of the school and to providing opportunities for an education steeped in patriotic American values to the children of Gunter Mountain. In October, during the board meeting held during Dedication Day festivities, a new Executive Committee was elected and a new committee structure was adopted. I am confident these changes will position the school for much success in the future. This Annual Report is a summary of the school’s activities and achievements in 2013, and it is my hope that you will be inspired as you read these pages, and that you will discover meaningful ways in which we can work together to make our “Gem of Gunter Mountain” stronger. As we look back on the first 90 years of this DAR School and look forward to the future we can provide these children, thank you for making a difference at KDS DAR School! 2013 Report to the Friends of KDS Information is based on audited financials from October 1, 2012 to September 30, 2013 7% Productive Enterprise Income Contributions* $594,391 Investment Income $470,536 Productive Enterprise $84,847 TOTAL$1,149,774 41% Investment Income 52% Contributions 23% 44% NSDAR Bequests & Estates 33% *Contributions Break-Down NSDAR $136,579 Direct Contributions $196,190 Bequests & Estates $261,622 Direct Contributions 14% Expenses Administrative Programs $827,033 Administrative $134,070 Fundraising/Development $9,368 TOTAL$970,471 1% Fundraising/ Development 85% Programs 2013 Highlights m 28 students employed through the KDS Work Scholarship At the beginning of the 2013/2014 School Year: m Elementary School (K-4th Grade) – 433 students m Middle School (5th-8th Grade) – 444 students m High School (9th-12th Grade) – 468 students Program m 69 children served through donations made to the KDS Christmas Fund m 37 students received special aid with proceeds from the AL Children’s Fund and the Helen Pouch Fund m 52% of KDS students live at or below the poverty line m $106,000 in new college scholarships awarded to 62 deserving students based on financial need m 158 graduates currently in college on KDS scholarship m More than 200,000 points were earned through Campbell’s Labels for Education Program and redeemed for 10 iPads, 4 ceiling mounted projectors, and other technology for the elementary classrooms. m DAR Middle School redeemed $9,656 earned through General Mills Box Tops for Education Program for the purchase of computer lab tables and books for the library and classrooms. TOTAL Enrollment 1,345 students Executive Director’s Message Thanks to the ongoing support of DAR members, the Kate Duncan Smith DAR School continues to be a blessing to the children of Gunter Mountain. In 2013, this tremendous generosity was expanded to include a new program for the benefit of KDS students who have lives most of us could never imagine. For years, KDS teachers and counselors noticed children who were extremely hungry on Monday mornings because they do not have adequate food at home on the weekends. The two meals a day they eat in the DAR Lunchroom during the week are, for some, the only balanced, nutritious meals they receive. If students are hungry, how can they ever concentrate on learning? So as you can imagine, the need was great, but the real question was what can we do about it? ‘Blessings in a Backpack’ is a nationwide non-profit program that provides weekend nourishment to school children in the Federal Free and Reduced Meal Program. The program is simple. Food bags are sent home with students on Friday afternoons during the school year. The bags include non-perishable, ready-to-eat, kid-friendly food items such as granola bars, peanut butter, tuna, crackers, mac & cheese, cereal, juice boxes, etc. Better test scores, improved reading skills, positive behavior, improved health and increased attendance are the goals of this program. The cost of sponsorship is $80 per child per year. schools to hand out to the students who need them. Our local C.A.R. society attended one of the weekly packing sessions, and it was an eye-opening experience. That night we prepared 450 sacks for kids in our county. It’s just heart-breaking to think that so many children don’t have enough to eat on the weekends, but I was amazed when I saw what can be done with just $80 per child per year! There are currently 200 KDS students in grades K-4 who receive weekly ‘Blessings in a Backpack’. Members of the Gunter Mountain community, churches, clubs and organizations have been great supporters of this program, donating funds to ensure a large number of our students could participate. Additional funding was provided by members of the DAR who learned of this need and wanted to lend a hand. The amazing Indiana DAR, under the leadership of State Regent Jeannie Hornung and School Chairman Janice Bolinger, raised $6,400 to sponsor 80 children! And the California Society DAR sent $500 to sponsor another 6 KDS students as well as 400 recyclable grocery bags from Debbie Jamison’s State Regent’s Project. I want to thank everyone who continues to shower their blessings on the children of KDS Executive Director Gunter Mountain. When you support KDS, Heather W. Green you demonstrate your love for children, your dedication to ‘God, Home, and Country’, and your commitment The ‘blessings’ are assembled weekly at a church in Guntersville. to a patriotic education. For that, we are truly blessed! Volunteers assemble the bags and distribute them to participating NSDAR Provides Funds for KDS Projects KDS received a nice surprise in the form of contributions from the Friends of DAR Schools Fund and the National School Chairman’s project pin sales for 2010-2013 during Continental Congress in June. President General Merry Ann Wright, along with National School Chairman Donna Raymond, made the presentation following the KDS school report. Approximately $38,000 was awarded for the Elementary School Arts Enrichment Program, improvements for the KDS track & field program facilities, and support of maintenance staff salaries. An additional $15,928 distribution from the Estate of Ella Atwell was presented as well. A new structure and process for disbursing the Friends of DAR School Fund donations has made the fund more effective by allowing the DAR Approved Schools to submit project proposals to the NSDAR annually. Through the Friends of DAR Schools Fund, the National Society and the DAR Approved Schools are working together to address the greatest needs of the schools and their students. Another highlight of Continental Congress each year is certainly the Junior Membership Luncheon. This year’s “A Golden Celebration” event highlighted the 50th anniversary of the Outstanding Junior Contest and the 75th Anniversary of the Helen Pouch Memorial Fund. The sole fundraiser of the Junior Membership Committee of the DAR is to raise money for the Helen Pouch Memorial Fund through the sales of nationally approved Junior products at the state and national levels as well as the contributions of chapters for achievement award credit. Those funds are awarded to the DAR schools annually for projects which directly benefit children. During this year’s luncheon, National Junior Membership Committee Chairman Morgan Lake presented KDS with funds to sponsor the salary of the school nurse and for the new high school science lab, a donation that was made in honor of NSDAR President General Merry Ann T. Wright. These funds make possible many of the valuable projects and programs at KDS DAR school. Thank you for your support of these important programs! Campus & Facilities Improvements With some 40 buildings and 240 acres comprising the KDS DAR School campus, building maintenance and repair is an ever-present challenge. During 2013 a number of projects were undertaken. The year began with a restroom repair in the Pennsylvania Log Cabin. Old plumbing was replaced and new flooring was installed. KDS maintenance personnel also custom-fabricated and installed automatic foundation vents for this 75-year-old building during 2013. In response to repeated loss due to lightning strikes, implementation of a Lightning Protection and Surge Suppression Plan devised for KDS by the Tennessee Valley Authority continued in 2013. In February, work performed in the Seimes-Thomas Building included installation of a triangle ground system, installation of equipment grounds from main panels to all sub panels, installation of transient voltage surge suppression units on the main panel board, installation of plug-in surge suppression units for the security camera system, installation of new breakers for camera system receptacles, and cleaning and servicing of panel boards. The KDS Agri-Science Building gained a number of needed improvements last year. The Marshall County Board of Education renovated the restroom to include a new toilet and sinks, new flooring, and plumbing repairs. Additionally, the classrooms were painted, the exterior soffits and fascia boards were wrapped in vinyl, new gutters with gutter guards were installed, and the exterior portions of the building that are cinder block received a fresh coat of paint. A privacy fence was also installed. The major renovation project undertaken by KDS in 2013 was the complete renovation of the restrooms in the Gary W. Cox Primary Building which took place during summer break. Demolition began on the last day of school in May, with the center ‘wet walls’ being removed and the rooms being gutted all the way down to the dirt under the floor. The 60+-year-old corroded pipes were removed and replaced with new, larger capacity PVC. The restrooms were then re-built from the ground up with new tile, fixtures, paint, partitions, ceiling grid and tiles, etc. A new “Teachers Only” restroom, Janitor’s Closet, and drinking fountains were added as well. Several other projects were tackled during the summer months while there were no students on campus. New air conditioning units were installed in the High School and Elementary School Libraries. The hallways in the Middle School received new, durable VCT flooring, and the boys restroom got new, sturdy toilet partitions. New drop-ceiling grids and energy efficient lighting was installed in both the Jacobs Building and the Cox Primary Building. There were also a number of landscaping projects undertaken during this time including the planting of ferns, hosta, and oak leaf hydrangeas in shade areas, the installation of azaleas around the old rock bleachers in front of the Doris Pike White Gymnasium, and the installation of underground-piped downspout extenders and colorful new planting beds at Lane Chapel. A much needed awning connecting the Marie Hirst Yochim Building with the Burkey Center and Seimes-Thomas Building was installed by the Marshall County Board of Education prior to the start of school. During the summer, security measures were enhanced for the school buildings. Main entrance doors received an electronic keypad with magnetic card reader capabilities. Visitors must now push the call button to request access to the building. They are viewed by office personnel via a security camera monitoring system and “buzzed in” to the building after stating their business. Faculty and staff access buildings with a magnetized key card. The magnetic locks may be disabled during the change of class for student access and during events like Dedication Day and Awards Day. The start of school in August brought with it much excitement as it also marked the start of the KDS Science Lab project. Funds donated by the National Junior Membership Committee, NSDAR, in honor of Merry Ann T. Wright, President General, NSDAR, 20102013, provided six specialized laboratory work stations for the new High School lab and 8 lab tables and 36 chairs for the Middle School lab classroom. This generous gift was also used to purchase new ceiling tiles, vinyl baseboards, paint, and electrical supplies to ready the High School classroom for its transformation to lab. The cool fall weather was perfect for the sealing and restriping of the Central/Doris Pike White Parking Lot and the Burkey Center Parking Lot. This project was long overdue, and the finished product is great improvement! Working in cooperation with the Marshall County Commission and the Marshall County Board of Education, a drainage ditch behind the Burkey Center that had long been an eyesore was piped and covered. This was a much bigger project than originally anticipated, and it could not have been completed without support from the local community and elected officials. Several improvements to the school’s athletic programs and facilities were completed in 2013. The girls’ locker room in the Doris Pike White Gymnasium received improvements to the shower area, and the boys’ locker room in that building was renovated to include plumbing repairs and a new toilet and urinal. The bleachers in the Burkey Center received extensive repairs and new seats to replace cracked and broken ones. The gymnasium floor was also screened and recoated and new court lighting was installed prior to the start of basketball season. Another gift from the National Junior Membership Committee made possible the addition of a regulation high jump area and a long jump pit. Work for the long jump pit was completed by a young man working toward his Eagle Scout designation. Maintaining the character and integrity of the buildings and campus grounds while providing a safe and pleasing learning environment for the students is a top priority at KDS DAR School. Thank you for helping us in this endeavor not only in 2013, but also for the past 90 years and well into the future. KDS DAR SCHOOL To schedule a KDS Campus Tour, call 256-728-4236 or visit www.kdsdar.org. We look forward to seeing you! 89th Dedication Day - October 2013 Beautiful fall weather welcomed visitors from across the country to the KDS DAR School’s 89th Dedication Day celebration on Monday, October 7 and Tuesday, October 8. This year’s festivities were even more special as the NSDAR National School Tour was present on campus. President General Lynn Young, National School Chairman Sally Bueno, members of the NSDAR Executive Board, a bus group from Mississippi, and numerous others travelling by car were on-hand to share in this special occasion. All total, more than 300 DAR guests were present at KDS on Monday and Tuesday. Awaiting the DAR ladies as they arrived on Monday morning was a warm “welcome to campus” where students lined the sidewalks, waved signs, and presented them with flowers and artwork while the KDS Marching Band provided lively tunes. Entertainment during lunch included a program of patriotic music by the 6th Grade J.A.C. Club. The festivities consisted of a dedication ceremony for the newly renovated restrooms in the Cox Primary Building, a dedication for the new High School Science Laboratory, campus tours, and classroom visits. A special tree dedication ceremony was also held. The October Glory Maple tree was planted in memory of Mary-Jane Early Hensley, Honorary State Regent of Maryland and mother of Recording Secretary General Barbara Carpenter. The traditional Dedication Program is always the highlight of the festivities, and 2013 was no exception with 22 state societies, groups, and organizations qualifying to dedicate. President General Lynn Young presented the Dedication Day message, which featured her heartfelt words about the special relationship between NSDAR and KDS. The program also featured musical performances by the Fourth Grade Choir and the High School Choir and all KDS students singing “DAR, Oh How We Love You” to a rousing response. The program was followed by the famous Basket Luncheon, a perennial favorite of the DAR ladies and guests. The 89th KDS DAR School Dedication Day was a truly special time for our “Gem of Gunter Mountain” and its students. Dedication Day 1962 Support your DAR School with In-Kind Gifts Support for the students at KDS comes in many forms. In addition to the cash contributions reported on page 3 of this Annual Report, the school also receives substantial in-kind contributions in any given year. Among the most popular ways to support KDS is the donation of Campbell’s Soup Labels for Education and General Mills Box Tops for Education. Labels for Education can be found on more than 2,500 participating products. These labels can be clipped and redeemed for products and merchandise relating to the arts, athletics and academics. America’s schools and other non-profit organizations have earned more than $114 million in merchandise during the Labels for Education program’s 40 year history. Since 1996 the Box Tops for Education program has helped schools earn cash for the things they need. These labels, worth 10 cents each, are located on hundreds of products and can earn any given school up to $20,000 per year. Both the soup labels and box tops are clipped, collected and counted by DAR members from across the United States before being mailed to KDS. They are then sorted and distributed to the Elementary and Middle Schools so they can be redeemed for items of need. These are highly beneficial programs for KDS and make it possible for the teachers to receive computers, iPads, and other teaching implements and materials they would not otherwise be able to afford. Though a major part of our in-kind giving program, the Labels for Education and Box Tops for Education are not the only in-kind programs in which KDS participates. Several regional product loyalty programs are also supported. These include the Publix Partners program, where school supporters present a card at the check-out of participating Publix grocery stores, and the Tyson Project A+, where a coupon is clipped from Tyson fresh and frozen chicken products. These companies send a quarterly check for the school’s participation in these programs. KDS also participates in the Coke Rewards program. DAR members can support this effort by entering the 10-digit codes from select Coke products on-line and assigning points earned to the school. Ink cartridge and cell phone recycling is another way the school earns money to fund day-to-day needs. All of these programs are outlined in detail on www.kdsdar.org, or information can be requested by calling the Administrative Office at 256-728-4236. In 2013, DAR members, alumni, and friends also supported KDS and its students by directly donating supplies for the Health Clinic, school supplies, band instruments, costume jewelry and art supplies, books, clothing, etc. Each gift received was special and met a particular need of a student. There were a few gifts, however, that are of particular note. One such gift was the generous donation of more than $2,500 in gift cards by the Georgia DAR “Sole Sisters”. These gift cards were used to purchase shoes and coats for students in need. Just in time for the 2013 Junior/Senior Prom, the members of the Virginia DAR donated and delivered more than 300 formal gowns and cocktail dresses for the students at KDS. A Pampered Chef kitchen party was held by a group of Pennsylvania DAR members for the Family and Consumer Sciences classes, and the Florida DAR held a grand “Welcome to Tampa” party for members of the KDS Marching Band who performed during half-time of the 2013 Outback Bowl. Special in-kind gifts were the handknitted mittens, scarves, and hats made for the children at KDS by Ann Bourne, Glovers Trace Chapter, Tennessee, and Harriett DeRosa, Jacob Stroud Chapter, Pennsylvania. Mrs. Bourne and Mrs. DeRosa have made these special gifts for the students for 10 years to keep KDS children warm during the winter months. Since 2005, Bobbie Sue and Jack Welch have been traveling from Decherd, Tennessee, to deliver handmade wooden toys made by Jack himself to bring joy to the children during Christmas time. The children absolutely love the doll cradles, log trucks, fire trucks, motor graders, cars, and tractors with trailers. Rose Marie Pugliese from the JacksonMadison Chapter, Tennessee, sends handmade beaded jewelry to reward children in the Accelerated-Reader Program. There are many ways to support your DAR School in Alabama. And although unrestricted cash contributions continue to be our greatest need, in-kind gifts are certainly a nice way to show your love for KDS! Note: Keep in mind that KDS no longer has a Thrift Store, and donations of clothing, computers, printers, shoes, etc. are not generally accepted. Please call the Administrative Office at 256-728-4236 to ask if your items can be donated.
