The Secondary Campus has
been slightly quieter this week
with our grade six students on
Zanzibar as part of IST’s
Extended Studies Program
(ESP). This program is
designed to extend the IST
curriculum to an interesting
and
unfamiliar
outdoor
cultural setting in Tanzania. The aims and objectives
of each trip try to support a minimum of two of the
components listed below;
Adventure Education
Students will develop skills in effective communicati
on, cooperation, and problem solving by taking part i
n safe and developmentally appropriate outdoor phy
sical and intellectual challenges.
Intercultural and Environmental Awareness
Students will learn about the culture and the ecology
of a particular region/site.
Service Learning
Students will take part in a service learning activity(s)
that will benefit
the local population and/or the environment.
On Thursday I travelled to Zanzibar and saw our
grade six students realizing part of our school vision,

which aims to embrace the people and natural environment of Tanzania. We snorkeled in the Menai
Bay conservation area that was the culminating activity of a snorkeling unit studied in Physical
Education classes. This was their final activity after completing days focusing on trading, conservation
and Stonetown. I would like to thank Mr Rob Tate for his leadership of this trip and the grade six
teachers who spent a week away with 87 eleven and twelve year olds – you deserve a well earned rest!
Earlier this week, Grade 9 and 10 students were informed of their ESP trip, which will take place in
February. Grade 7, 8 and 11 students will travel to particular site as a grade level. Information about
these trips will go home with students before the December break.
There are four more school weeks to go until the end of Term 2. This is the time of year when a
number of summative assessment tasks in different subject areas are given to students. Please sit
down with you child/ren and monitor their time management over the next four weeks of school. If
you are travelling outside of the published break over Dec/Jan please let the relevant team leader
know so that they can inform the class teachers and we can make sure your son/daughter is able to
complete the required work and assessments.

IST in December?
Hello Parents,
The vClick team would like to say thanks
for the support of the students and the
parents during the portrait photography
session. This is our first time doing the
portrait pictures and if by any chance you
are not impressed with the pictures, we
have a makeup session next week running
from Monday through Thursday during
lunch breaks (so that we do not interfere
with study times). All the pictures will be
handed over by Christmas break so that
you can carry the good memories with you.
We promise not to disappoint you next
time.
Perhaps you have received the news so many of us dread –
the company is moving you to a new location! On that long
list of things to take care of, informing the school should be
one of them. This can start with an email to the Admissions
Office
to
inform
us
of
your
move
([email protected]). That’s all it takes to get the
ball rolling. We’ll be sad to see you go, but let us help make
the move as smooth as possible for the whole family.

The Diplomatic Spouses Group offers their most sincere thanks to the students, parents, teachers,
administrators and employees of the IST Secondary and Primary schools who came out in such full
support of the Annual Charity Bazaar. With your help we were able to bring together people from all
parts of the globe for a day full of good food and good spirits.

Please bring your friends along to this important event. A panel of senior students, parents and health
professionals will provide insight into the range of experiences that teenagers face as they grow up here
in Dar. Discussions will be generated from concerns that the parents in the audience pose. This is a great
opportunity for parents from our IST community to get together and consider the challenges of parenting
in Dar, with its wide range of cultural and social norms.

PAMOJA Baskets!
Student Council is organizing PAMOJA Baskets! These are
boxes of basic food ite ms given to our non-teaching staff
at the Secondary School as a gesture of appreciation for
all of the work they do to keep the school running. Each
students is being asked to bring in the following items to
their homerooms:
· Grade 6— 1 OR 2 KILO BAG OF RICE
· Grade 7— 1 OR 2 KILO BAG OF SUGAR
· Grade 8—1 or 2 BOTTLES OF COOKING OIL AND/ OR MARGARINE
· Grade 9— 1 or 2 OMO FOR WASHING CLOTHES
· Grade 10—1 or 2 KILO BAGS OF FLOUR OR MAIZE FLOUR
· Grade 11—1 or 2 KILO BAG OF BEANS (SOYA BEANS, DRIED BEANS ETC)
· Grade 12—1 BOX OF NIDO MILK POWDER
· TEACHERS—LUXURY ITEM (CHOCOLATE, BISCUITS, CANDY, JUICE, ETC.)
The first homeroom within each grade (6-10) to reach 100% participation gets a free-dress day! The
first homeroom within each IB grade to reach 100% participation gets breakfast donuts!
So please remember PAMOJA when you go shopping in the next few weeks!
