The Brooks Range is one of Ouzel Expeditions most remote rafting destinations. Ouzel floats two
rivers in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. The Kongakut and Hula
Hula Rivers.
The Kongakut is considered the crown Jewel of the Arctic National Wildlife refuge, this river is
one of the most beautiful rivers in Alaska. It is perfect for family trips and people of all levels of
adventure. It only has one short stretch of class 3 whitewater which is why we offer clients the option
of following along with the group, in our inflatable kayaks.

This gives those who like to stay active some fun and
enjoyment. The rest can sit in our comfortable chairs and enjoy floating the calm, crystal clear water,
and have hands free to take photos and enjoy the views. Fresh Arctic Char is also a delight while
floating this river.
Hula Hula
The
is perfect for adventurous souls wanting to get deeper into the Brooks
Range to view wildlife, hike the rugged peaks, enjoy some white water and get more out of
the remote rafting experience. We don’t offer the kayak along experience on this unless,
you are an experienced white water kayaker. This river is a must for people who want to see
unspoiled wilderness before oil exploration opens in the ANWR. This river crosses areas
that would be affected, if it were to open up to drilling.
There are few places in the world where one can float down such pristine rivers and see so
much wildlife. It’s common to see wolves, bears, caribou,musk ox, and sheep. The
porcupine caribou herd migrates across the Kongakut and Hulu Hulu Rivers. If we are lucky
we may float through a sea of 300,000 plus caribou.
Campsites are selected for the best views and access to hiking into the mountains. You are
feed three delicious meals a day, this lots of snacks. The last camp, if it’s caribou pass or
the open plains, if you look out over sea ice to the north, Canada to the east, Alaska’s arctic
slope to the west, and either the winding kongakut and Hula Hula to the south, you realize
you are on top of the world.
