Mooredale Talks
In this issue Fall 2014 Get excited for the New Season! Mooredale Talks Thursday, October 2, 7:30 pm Cam Collyer, Program Director, Evergreen W here do our kids play today? The same places as their parents did as children? Do they roam freely? Are you worried about the trends? Childhood is swiftly and alarmingly moving indoors, supervised, sedentary and with a strong dose of screen time – it’s an international phenomena and a cause of great concern to the health, education and planning fields. Research is revealing the wide range of benefits from regular outdoor time in the natural world including increasing physical activity, pro-social behaviour and the motivation to learn and even mitigating attention disorders. Come and hear some inspired examples of what communities, parents and schools are doing in response, to create places and programs that are nurturing for children and good for their communities. Join Cam Collyer and Mooredale on October 2nd for an evening dedicated to discussing all we can do to ensure our children embrace the power of nature and all that we can accomplish as parents, grandparents and a community to solidify their relationship with the great outdoors. Mooredale members: $10 Guests: $15 Visit www.mooredale.com to reserve your tickets or send a cheque made payable to: Mooredale House, 146-Crescent Road, Toronto, ON M4W 1V2. I hope that each of you had a lovely and relaxing summer, wherever your journeys may have taken you. So much is happening right in our own great city and Mooredale is certainly a part of it all. Our day camp once again successfully provided a summer of fun for our young campers, the pool club was a hive of activity and our competitive soccer teams showed enormous commitment throughout July and August. With the advent of fall, exciting things abound at Mooredale! Check out our programs: new offerings such as Kangoo Jumps and iPhoneograhy, along with the always popular karate, fitness and music classes and so much more. Sunday afternoon Flag Football at Rosedale Park is a fantastic way to get your kids outdoors and active, House League soccer continues to bring our community together and our nurturing and very special preschool opens its classroom doors to our youngest members once again. Soctoberfest returns to Lamport Stadium on October 4th for all of us adults; if you are keen on pulling together a team (all abilities have a place), please don’t hesitate to get a hold of Chris Keem in the Sports office for more information. I can vouch firsthand for an outstanding day of soccer – you’ll feel like a kid again! As well, please consider joining us for the launch of Mooredale Talks, our very own speaker series being held at Mooredale House. We will kick off the series on October 2nd with an inspiring discussion led by Cam Collyer, Programs Director at Evergreen. Cam is an inspiring leader and speaker in the area of nature and its positive effect on children, both from a physical and mental perspective. He will speak to the profound changes in the way our children play and their relationship to nature, along with how to bring the outdoor world to our urban children, encouraging them to be stewards of all that naturally exists around them. Cam will undoubtedly encourage a lively discussion and I do hope that many of you will attend. Please see the Mooredale website (www.mooredale.com) for further information on how to secure a place for this great evening. As always, I encourage each of our members to look at their many talents and interests and consider sharing them with our community. New ideas are always welcome here at Mooredale and I trust that this new year at Mooredale will be a great one! Happy fall! All summer we have enjoyed lovely weather (with the odd thunderstorm punctuating our afternoons). The kids and the Mooredale Staff have found great ways to make summer memories – at the Pool, at Summer Fun, at Day Camp, at Soccer Camp, at Tennis lessons, and during out-trips to Kelso. Adults found time for fun too and overall the energy and enthusiasm has remained strong all summer long. Now we look forward to everything that Fall will bring: •Fabulous Fall Programs for children, youth and adults too •A new Speaker Series for adults and their guests •The launch of the new Preschool year – with seamless day links to Mooredale programs •Our Flag Football players get ready to hit the gridiron •The Soccer House league enjoys their final month of play, before the big Cup Day on Sept. 27 & 28 •The Rosedale Terry Fox Run held at Mooredale on Sunday September 14th from 8 to noon •The latest wonderful series offered by Mooredale Concerts and Orchestras – see the series brochure in this newsletter •The Hallowe’en Event for Families on October 25th Think of your favourite ‘salsa’ that you created for some summer feast this year. Was it hot and spicy? Did you make one with some seasonal fresh fruit? That’s what the Board, Committees, Staff and Instructors at Mooredale have worked hard to create for this season. We hope you will join in the fun and enjoy all the savouries and sweets that the season brings. Fall 2014 Hip Hip Hooray for our Summer staff team! Preschool Summer Fun staff team was led by Carolyn Burgess and, thanks to their hard work and excellent planning, the children enjoyed every part of the program, especially the new sunshades over the playground climber! The Mooredale Day Camp Director, Eric Musselman, worked with a remarkable team, including Assistant Director, Erin Ciona, and Program Director, Jessica Procyshyn, and the staff of 50. Thanks to each one for making magic happen for our campers this season. The Swimming Pool Club is a very special place indeed! Stephanie Chu, Pool Manager, led an extremely capable group of lifeguards and instructors to offer a program that was chock full of lessons, lane swim, aquafit and general swim opportunities for club members. (If you aren’t a Pool member yet, be sure to get your name on the wait list for next year now!) The Soccer Season used to be quieter in the summer – but not anymore... this year, thanks to Chris Keem, Soccer & Sport Manager, and Federico Sanmartin, Technical Director, the Select and Competitive programs were still active. Plus, there was a new 2 week soccer skills camp offered, which many players enjoyed this year. So thanks for the Summer Memories. We look forward to making the most of Fall with you! Marjorie Booth EXECUTIVE DIRETOR Mooredale – Do drop in! Members and their guests are welcome to drop by Mooredale anytime in the mornings, from 9:30 to noon, and enjoy a cup of coffee on us! Marie is a past Chair of Mayfair and a decades-long volunteer for Mayfair and Mooredale. Marie was originally a member of the team of volunteers who worked weekly for countless years in the Mooredale basement sorting out donations for the very successful Flea Market. Marie’s specialty was The Treasures, a collection of jewellery and trinkets from which children chose Mother’s Day gifts. For many years Marie has also been the keeper of the ticket-selling aprons, faithfully collecting them at the end of Mayfair each year; washing, drying, ironing and storing them all carefully for the next year. On rainy years this sometimes involved a quick trip home for some extra drying midday! In recent years, Mayfair volunteers have appreciated Marie’s early morning coffee and doughnuts as they set up on Saturday morning. Marie will be continuing her work in the Mayfair clubhouse next year organizing a myriad of logistical tasks. Marie is a tremendous example of the great volunteer commitment which Mooredale engenders in the community and by which we all benefit. We all thank you so much, Marie. While having fun is a great aspect of camp, the best part of camp is building relationships and seeing the campers and staff grow as people. So many of our campers this summer accomplished their swimming levels, passed their deep end tests, hit a bull’s eye in archery and tried new things. It is so exciting for our staff to see campers accomplish their goals and try something new. But we also saw campers grow in their character – learning to share with others, letting someone else go first, resolving conflicts in a healthy way, and being respectful of those around us. Seeing our campers ‘grow-up’ in these little ways is what makes summer camp such a special and rewarding place to work. It always takes a strong team with many different people to make summer camp a success. I would like to thank Gnomeo (Erin Ciona) for returning for her fourth summer. Aside from her normal work managing our camp office, daily communication and liaising with the pool managers, Gnomeo had the extra burden of showing me the ‘ropes’ and being the main transitional person between myself and Trogdor. She did an amazing job all around and we couldn’t have had such a good summer without her tireless work. I would also like to thank Jessica Procyshyn (Piton) for doing an T he summer camp season is over and we are thankful for all the families who chose us this summer for their day camp adventure! We had a wonderful summer running the program and spending time with all of our campers – some for a few days and others for a few weeks. The summer was filled with big splashes and even bigger smiles in the pool, singing at Mooredale Morning Madness, Meal Time Madness competitions between counsellors, adventures with Clean-A-Bot and some great field trips. This summer Mooredale campers went underwater at Ripley’s Aquarium, rode the Tall Ships at Harbourfront, stepped back in time at Black Creek Pioneer Village, visited the Police Museum, bounced like crazy on the Skyzone trampolines and experimented at the Science Centre. Here at camp we introduced a French program for Junior campers, met Rapunzel and her friends at Big Kid Entertainment, made our owns clouds in Geo Science, and even blew up watermelons with elastics! 6 excellent job in the Program Director role this summer. Her creative ideas and always-positive personality helped ensure our programs ran smoothly. The campers thoroughly enjoyed all of our fantastic Theme Days and field trips. Huge thank you needs to be given to the rest of the strong leadership team. Shannon (River), Jeremy (Poe), Katrina (Neon), Sarah (Coral) and Adrienne (Chica) worked tirelessly with the counsellors to set up programs, deal with camper conflict, dress up in crazy costumes, create crazy Meal Time Madness competitions, and do the 1001 things that need to be done every day to make camp a success. And last, but certainly not least, we all owe the Counsellors thank you’s for the work they did every day with the campers. Each morning at 8 am they arrived ready and excited to work and they faithfully stuck to their duties until the last camper went home. For many of them this was their first ‘real’ job, and it was such a pleasure to walk with them through the experience and to see them take on this challenging responsibility. We look forward seeing everyone next summer! Thank you to our Mooredale lifeguards, Ellie, Callan, Sawyer and Fraser, our Summer Fun program team, Irene, Michelle B. Serina, Michelle P, Amanda and Michelle D. and our Junior Counsellor, Ryan, for such a great summer, we’re sorry to see it end, but still we have so much to look forward to this fall. For over 60 years, and from Toddler to Kindergarten, Mooredale Preschool has fostered a love of learning with an enriched educational program, outstanding ratios and a highly experienced and dedicated team of professionals. And this year we are adding even more exceptional learning opportunities. So far these include Yoga, enhanced French, more Music as well as additional special guest invitations. For our kindergarten children we look forward to an exciting new chess program, (yes, chess!) as well as adventurous field trip destinations... better make sure passports are all up to date… well maybe that’s wishful thinking, but we promise a year of super excursions, both within and outside of our community. New! We are partnering with our very own Mooredale programs in order to provide a “seamless day” that includes a regular half day preschool class (morning or afternoon), our lunch program and an escort to or from one of our Mooredale programs such as, Monkeynastix, Karate, Sportball and the Little Travellers Club, to name just a few. Please contact the preschool office for more information or to arrange a tour, we love to show you our program in action! 416-922-3714 ext.113 [email protected] Live-in Pet/House-sitting Cat Visits Dog Walks Midtown - Rosedale - Forest Hill 416.483.3714 Bonded Insured Professionals www.bredinsbest.com 14 MooredaleNews Fall 2014 Inspired by a dream Grounded in tradition Volunteer-driven NO ENTRY FEE NO MINIMUM PLEDGE WALKlRUNlWHEELlRIDE Sunday September 14 The Rosedale-Moore Park Terry Fox Run Join us at Mooredale House 146 Crescent Road Phone: 416-922-3714 TIME: 8am – Noon We’ll have live music, Starbucks coffee, pre and post-run snacks. Nomination Form l The remaining nine Directors on the Board shall be filled by nominees elected to be “Directors at large”, who are then assigned positions. Most of these positions are assigned annually as we continue traditional activities, but other portfolios can change from year to year in order for the Board to complete goals set for the upcoming year. The following two positions are assigned annually: President: chairs regular board meetings and works with Executive Director. Treasurer: supervises the financial affairs of the Association. The following portfolios were in operation for 2013-2014 Marketing & Sponsorship Director: investigates new marketing opportunities to increase public awareness of Mooredale and promotes sponsorship support for Mooredale. The ensemble was an immediate success, with Adam Baer of the New York Sun proclaiming it “one of the city’s cultural jewels.” The Players regale New York City with their remarkable mixed ensemble programming of wellknown masterpieces and sublime hidden treasures from the chamber music repertoire. Featured performers are violinist Areta Zhulla, cellist Mihai Marica, violist Vicki Powell, double bassist Nathaniel West, clarinetist Vadim Lando, horn player Karl KramerJohansen, and bassoonist Gina Cuffari. Of special interest, Areta plays on a copy of Stradivarius’s “Viotti”, made in 2009 by her father, Greek luthier Lefter Zhulla. The seven players will unite in Beethoven’s enduringly beloved Septet in E flat Major, Op. 20 as the grand performance for the afternoon. Jupiter team members will also perform Mozart’s Clarinet Quartet in B flat after K. 378 and the Serenade in C Major by Ernst von Dohnanyi. “Music-making of a very high order…at the Jupiter concerts, there is always so much about which to be enthusiastic… the rarities glittered like jewels” – Fred Kirshnit, The New York Sun “...Outstanding playing… The Serenade’s four movements were put through their paces smartly, positively oozing vivacity and élan...” – The Strad Mihai Marica Single tickets go on sale September 1; $30 adult/senior, $20 for under age 30, and $13 per person for Music & Truffles, available online at www. mooredaleconcerts.com or by phone, and at the door.
