Playing with patterns helps children make sense of our patternrich world, laying the foundation for math, science, music, art,
and even storytelling. Have fun with patterning by assembling
your own dinosaur train at home. All aboard!
Cyberchas

• Build and complete patterns
• Predict an item in a sequence
If your child is ready, try more complex patterns,
such as AABB or ABCABC. For older children try
patterns with other characteristics, such as big
and small; or spikes, wings, and plates.

How Do I Do It?
Create Your Dinosaur Passengers
1. Visit the Dinosaur Train website and print
out three copies of your child’s two favorite
dinosaurs. Find them online at:
pbskids.org/dinosaurtrain/print/index.html
2. Ask your child to color each type of
dinosaur a different color, such as green
for each Stegosaurus and blue for each
Triceratops. Cut them out, and set them aside.

Build Your Train
1. Line up chairs or cushions as train cars—first the
train engine, then the cars, and finally the caboose.
2. Use the dinosaur cut-outs to create a simple AB pattern, placing
a dinosaur in each car. For example: T.rex (A), Pteranodon (B),
T.rex (A), Pteranodon (B), T.rex (A), what comes next?
Invite your child to select the next dinosaur in the pattern.
3. Help your child see the pattern. Point out the alternating colors,
or say the dinosaur names in order in a rhythmic way.
4. Switch roles, and allow your child to build a passenger pattern
for you to complete.

pbskids.org/dinosaurtrain/print/index.html.

Pteranodón (B), T.rex (A), Pteranodón (B), T.rex (A), ¿qué sigue?
