Presidents Report.
September is spring time, football finals and the opening of our fishing season on rivers what more do you need. The first sign for me is the extended twilight rather than
day then night and the birds chirping as light fades. Those early nights with wind
and rain are easing and thoughts of rejuvenated rivers with feeding fish beckons me
to sit down at the vice and tie up some favourite flies (or be extra nice to Peter T at fly
tying)
For those assisting with the Fishing Festival at Eildon thank you for setting some of
your valuable fishing time to help others. This is the busiest time of the year on our
calendar the Fishing and Boating show is done and the Kids Come N Try fishing is
coming up. These are big events and members support is required for them to be successful so please join in.
For anyone who has fished for a while and I am probably talking over ten years you
would have noticed the declining numbers of fish in some rivers and lakes. Some areas still have good stocks but for many it’s grim and an ongoing argument as to the
reasons is it drought, flooding, fishing pressure or all of the above but the main reason is linked to El Nino and his brother. No not the Spanish fish thieves. Our changing climate patterns are becoming more severe and the predictions don’t look favourable with extreme El Nino predicted so with that in mind we should be looking at protecting our precious resources and for us that’s mainly Trout.
I do not understand why anyone has to remove fish from the water any more. We
have a lot of excellent information on correct fish handling and it all points to leaving
fish in the water I have changed my methods and I merely slide my hand down the
line and hold the fly, most small fish wiggle free. For those where the hook is deeper I
use forceps and most times just have to hold the fly. I always get difficult cases some
twisted or hooked in the scissor some imbedded deeply but letting them go with as
little damage as possible means I can come back and have a good chance of catching
a fish next time, and yes I do haunt some areas regularly. I have even resorted to carrying a net again so I can contain them without handling them. And you guessed it I
don’t like taking fish especially from rivers and small streams. Some people wander
around different locations and have to take one or two fish from wherever they fish
and you often hear “I only took one or two she’s right mate”. Well on any given day
there are fish killers everywhere so you don’t have to be a rocket scientist to work out
what will happen. Sometimes our club trips coincide with other clubs and that could
mean 30 to 40 people from two clubs alone. Most fly fishers practise catch and release and maybe that’s why some of our streams hold some fish still. Some small
streams with rocks and faster water don’t suit lure chucker’s or bait fisher’s ideal for
us though.

I will leave you with something to ponder over, you won’t win a club trip with a fish
under 350 mm so why kill it and most breeding fish are over 350 so why kill the future. Our trip competition is worked out by length so something to measure fish is
easy to carry. I have definite marks on some of my rods, rings writing etc so I have a
good idea quickly without getting the tape out. Another thing to consider is fish
spawn at different times and you will find fish still with eggs late in their season
even in September. Lots of lakes are stocked as put and take fisheries and they are
usually better conditioned fish so I would suggest that is a better option if you like
eating fish or go to a Trout farm.
I have got some favourite spots lined up for Trout opening and I’m hoping for fine
weather cool water and not too much traffic in the hills. With a bit of luck some fish
might be larger and they will bend my rod, put a smile on my dial and hopefully
swim off to live another day. Cheers TJ.

Prowess Publishing & Media. Muz Wilson is a name synonymous with innovative fly patterns, and on this DVD he
presents eight of his most successful ties.
Muz ties each fly explaining the steps and the thoughts behind them—what effect he was trying to achieve and how
the tying techniques and materials bring life to the fly—an
amazing insight into the mind of one of the country’s most
creative tiers.
His vast knowledge of the prey items being represented and
the fish species he is targeting is evident throughout the
DVD. Not only must the fly look right, it must also behave
in a way the fish are expecting. The Wee Creek Hopper is a
great example of how an imitation can be stripped down to
just its essential triggers, leaving a simple, robust fly that is arguably more effective
than many complicated grasshopper patterns. Then there’s Muz’s ‘fuzzle’ technique
which gives flies a translucent halo effect, producing a very lifelike quality in the
water.
For beginners or experienced tiers, Muz provides a wealth of information and inspires the viewer to hit the tying bench to replicate these patterns, or to set about
designing your own.
Of all the secrets associated with fly fishing, the flies we use are often the most
closely guarded. With this DVD, Muz Wilson has let a few of those secrets out. From
a Sticky Caddis or Fuzzle Bugger in the lakes to a Messy Caddis or Wee Creek Hopper in the streams, no fly box seems complete without them.

for a USA trip [he missed the official team by one fish]. Well done Daniel; the first of
big steps.
8. An 11 year old girl came first in the USA Open casting Championships. What an
achievement; what a future. Stand up ladies!
9. Website demonstration was conducted. A team of your fellow members have
worked hard to produce an excellent product; well done boys.

EDITORS REPORT– December 1999 Edition
Welcome to the last edition of the Flyline-Byline for the millennium, (or not, it depends who you talk to). Either way, this edition will give everybody some things to
think about over the break. From this issue, there will be one page of the Flyline
dedicated to a trading post, so start looking through those old vests, tackle boxes,
cupboards and garages for anything you’ve grown out of or no longer want. The
ads will run for two issues and then be removed unless you need to re-advertise.
As well as the trading post, there will be a writing competition in the Flyline next
year, running from the February to November edition, to be announced at the
break-up. There will be a top prize for this comp, so get out there fishing and then
get to writing! You don’t have to catch the biggest or most fish, or be an accomplished author, just give us an interesting fishing story of at least 300 words. Bill
Classson will judge the winner.
On a personal note, the November club trip to Lake Purrumbete was my third, and
most successful trip. On previous trips to Thornton and Cairn Curran I had an excellent time, which I’ve found is standard on a club trip, but I didn’t land a single
fish. I missed strikes, didn’t strike and broke off, but I didn’t bring a fish to hand.
At Purrumbete though, I managed a Brown trout of 505mm. My first fish on a
club trip, my first trout from a lake and my largest brownie. The only negative was
getting knocked off for the best fish of the trip.
The deadline for the next Flyline (February) will be the 20th of January 2000.

Tri Club Challenge
Yarra Valley Fly Fishers, Red Tag and Southern Fly Fishers

After a rushed start due to setting but not turning on my alarm, I pulled up to pick
up Steve Hanlon and we set off to meet Doug Braham, who was our driver and
guide for the day.
Steve and I had never been to Newlands or Hepburn before, so this was going to add
to the learning curve for both of us. Climbing the Western Highway out of Bacchus
Marsh, the surrounding landscape seem quite flat with the odd small single mountain top appearing. We eventually turned off the freeway and headed off in the general direction of Newlands, guided by Doug's GPS.
The weather was clear, albeit cold and windy, not a good thing for fly casters.
After a couple of slightly worrying comments of ' I don't recognise this road', we
eventually arrived at the small town of Newland North and turned off to the lake. We
pulled up in the parking area, around 9am, to see a couple of guys already casting
into the deep water near the water tower. After standing around, having a chat with
some other casters, the decision was made to gear up and walk down the wall towards the willows.
As we were walking down the wall, we looked down to see another fly caster trying
his best. A familiar face from the club turned to greet us. Peter Hawkey was also
trying to best the trout of Newlands, but with no luck as yet.
The lake wasn't full by any stretch and could have done with another 2metres of
water at least, by some of the comments heard by more experienced anglers. My
first impression was that there was a lot of weed beds close in shore that we would
have to contend with, before being able to get our flies into fishable water.
Thinking that I would need to get my fly below the surface I started with my intermediate line and a bead head Woolly Bugger. After getting off the wall, we walked
around from the willow trees and started to fish. The wind was not too gusty and we
were able to use it as a casting aid. Low back casts and high forward casts allowed
the wind to carry the flies further out. Keeping in mind what I had learned from our
stream craft lessons I began stripping the line in in various speeds and lengths to
try to create some interest in my fly.
There were quite a few guys along this side of the lake, so we leap frogged each other, while allowing a generous amount of fishing space between everyone. Wading
out to try to get beyond the weeds was proving difficult as they seemed to stretch
out quite far into the lake. So my technique was cast out and begin retrieving within
a few seconds of the fly landing. Thinking was that I didn't want the fly to catch on
any of the weeds, thereby making it appear quite unnatural.

it was quite overcast, with some sun trying to break through, but apparently a very
sunny day wouldn't have been the best to fish with here. The wind was still consistent and had quite a knife edge to it. Thankfully layers of clothing kept that at
bay.
There was no signs of any fish, as a yell from someone who had hooked up would
have been a sign. But it was all quiet on the western shore. We continued walking,
casting, passing the next guy, and walking casting... you get the idea. Steve and I
eventually found ourselves at the southernmost end of the lake. There was a high
bank overlooking the lake where there were 2 casters from Southern fishing. Over
shouts of 'any luck?', we learned that one of them hand landed a brown of around
4lbs. We stood and watched from our vantage point, watching for any signs of fish
cruising through the water. No such luck.
Steve and I eventually made our way down off the high bank to the water’s edge.
This part, with the water way down, almost looked like a small stream that ran into
the lake. I decided to switch to my floating line and changed flies to a bead head
black Magoo. There were gaps in the weed beds that looked inviting, so we both began casting into them. The wind wasn't as bad as we were protected by the high
bank. But even varying the retrieves and working our casts into varying spots
proved fruitless.
We decided to return to the cars, so began the long walk back. The wind was still
gusting and felt quite cold on the face. Doug had eventually made his way down
and we stood and watched his efforts. Lots of casting, lots of retrieves all to no
avail.
I didn't realise how far we had walked down the lake shore, so it was quite a while
before we arrived back at the cars. Doug arrived shortly after with the news that he
had to go and rescue one of our fellow club members who wasn't aware that SUV
didn't equal 4WD and had got himself bogged at the lakes edge. Apparently the surface didn't look that bad, until the wheels began to spin and he had that sinking
feeling. Our compatriot was glad of someone who had a real 4wd and a winch.
While this rescue mission was being undertaken, I took the chance to fish the deeper water at the top of the lake. I had reverted back to my intermediate line and cast
out, using the wind again, which was at my back this time. I allowed my line a
good chance to sink into the deeper water, hoping that there was a trout cruising
around. Again numerous casts and retrieves proved trout less.
Lunch was taken on the foreshore and there was much discussion around locations, tactics and flies. Alas, no one had struck the right combination to have bragging rights. Steve didn't feel so bad after hearing that. He figured that if some of the
best fly fishers in the club hadn't caught anything then it must be hard fishing!!

Tri Club Challenge
A group had gathered over aways and I wandered over to see a Fisheries Officer
chatting to some of our guys. There was lots of questions thrown at him, and comments about the rules and regulations and the state of the fisheries and the future
of fishing. Licences were produced by all and duly given the seal of approval from
the boys in blue. I commented to both Doug and Steve that in the time that I have
had to carry a licence, around 38 years, that was only the 3rd time ever, that I had
been asked to show it. But it goes to show that you just never know when you may
see an inspector, so better to have one than not.
After lunch, we tossed up about where to try. As Steve and I had never been here,
we suggested that we go and have a look at Hepburn Lagoon. After a couple of detours and u-turns we eventually sighted it. It just looked like a VERY big farm dam
in the middle of some very open paddocks. After opening and closing a farm gate,
the sheep scattered as we made our way across the paddock to the outlet of the lagoon. Another car was there, which Doug recognised as belonging to a Red Tag fly
fisher. So, I thought, there were some from all 3 clubs here, having only seen Yarra
Valley and Southern fly fishers previously.
The other 2 fly fishers had headed off to the left hand bank, so Doug suggested we
take the deeper water to the right. There was a small chop on the water as the wind
was still quite brisk, but thankfully to our backs, so yet helpful with casting. But I
couldn't help wondering how shallow it would get if we were already in the deeper
water! I had waded out to round knee deep and turned to see that I was quite away
off the edge.
Yet again more weed beds, so quick retrieves were required. Low back casts and
high forward casts, with the wind enabled quite long casts, hopefully to where the
trout were cruising. I watched Doug, who was about 50 metres away doing the
same, but again, for no reward. We walked down towards a more hilly section,
where it seemed the water may be a bit deeper. It was, but the weeds were still
there too. I passed Doug, walking on the rock strewn bank, being careful not to trip.
I have gained a bit of a reputation as someone who seems to take a tumble quite
readily.
I began casting again, with my intermediate line and a wet fly. Varied retrieve times
and methods again bringing no results. I turned to watch Doug, only to see the colleague of the Fisheries Inspector questioning him.
After having been told we had met his mate back at Newlands, he quickly departed.
Seems they aren't afraid to take a walk to catch up with a fisherman.
It was now close to the end of the competition and we needed to be back at Newlands for the weigh in. A long walk back to the car, saw blank looks when asked
about fish. Doug later admitted he had never caught a fish there.

Tri Club Challenge
A short drive saw us arriving back at the foreshore at Newlands. All of the guys had
gathered to weigh in, have measured or just rue the ones that had gotten away. The
only evidence was a photo of the 4lb brown that had been taken earlier that day at
the southern end of Newlands. The lucky guy was a Southern Fly fisher, so the trophy and the congratulations of the rest of us went to him.
So, with words of, 'it fishes better when it’s up' echoing in our ears, I resolved that I
would come back to fish here. You just have to strike the right combination of water,
weather, wind, flies, weed.... and trout who are feeding. Who said this was easy!!
