President’s message
Trevor Jacobson
Welcome back to those who haven’t caught up down at the club. The fishing gods are smiling on some
people already this year with some impressive catches recorded.
Not many people chase willow grub feeders or willow sawflies. Lionel has been perfecting his flies and
techniques over a number of years and I think this year he hit pay dirt. He showed me a number of
photos from a recent trip and every fish appeared to be at least one to one and a half kilos. To me this
is the best type of fishing, polaroiding, stalking and short casts. To catch one fish like this is a good day
out but to nail half a dozen or more quality fish is a red letter day. It’s not that hard to replicate this, the
information is readily available on a number of web sites, or just ask a member. The Goulburn and
Rubicon rivers have many willows that get infected with these grubs every summer. I received another
photo from Daniel taken in Tasmania, the message read ten pound on a four weight. What! How,
where, wow!!. I am so sorry for Daniel that’s going to be hard to improve on he should have waited till
he was fifty or sixty years old. Ten pounds seems to be the magical number everyone is aiming for but
so few get there. I think there should be a ten pound club I think there is only a few members so far
with Lynton and Daniel now members. Aron is just back from Tasmania and he has a photo of a lovely
Four and a half to five pound fish. Well that’s the best way to start off the year.
There is a lot happening around the club with the fly tying courses ready to start so if you need to learn
or polish up your skills come down Wednesday night. Casting is set to kick off as well with a similar
deal on Sunday mornings.
The club has sent of a reply to the proposed cancellation of closed season in the South Western rivers.
It is hard to believe that there are closed seasons everywhere and if this goes ahead what it could do to
the larger breeding fish in this area. Members should be aware of what is happening with our fishery
and what fisheries is trying to do to resolve the poor catch rates experienced in some of our wild trout
fisheries. The department has started the Wild Trout Fisheries Management Program; if members read
the literature they are producing they will have a better understanding of what is happening and how
to assist. For anybody fishing the Howqua the “tag return” program and angler survey needs to be
followed to help understand catch and harvest levels. The upper Goulburn will also have tagged fish.
For those who haven’t seen these tags they are usually located on the top of the fish below the dorsal
fin. There is information printed on the tag which you need to record or simply cut the tag off, dates,
location and tag serial number are required. If you are fishing in the Delatite some fish have been fitted
with an internal acoustic tag that sends out a signal to listening stations, Please return all fish in this
river unharmed , keep them in the water at all times practising the best catch and release you can.
Lynton kept a great record of all fish caught on club trips and John Motyka is doing the same, this will
be our record which we can pass on. It would be great if we could develop a general record which all
members participate in.
We have some guest speakers booked in starting in April with Andrew Summers from Mayfly Tackle
talking about fishing Tasmania. On Sunday the 12th of April he will be bringing a new range of rods and
lines from Mayfly to the club for members to try. A great opportunity to test light weight rods up to
saltwater rods no obligation. Cheers Trevor.

Applause & Accolades
Thanks To Lynton for formatting the new FlyTying guide booklet for 2015, some
great new flyes for the fly tying course
Thanks to Peter Thackray for printing the fly tying booklet.
Thanks to Paul Pavone for taking on Flytying assisted by Aron Treloar
Thanks to John Motyka for taking on trips for 2015.
Thanks to Shane Houston for assisting with casting instructors course.
March general meeting
On a recent Sunday morning we had an ex member come in and give us some memorabilia. Ted
Bettens was around the club in the very early days of conception and participated in casting
competitions. He gave us his certificates from the first casting competition where he achieved a
perfect score, well done Ted.
He would like to dispose of his Rods (2), reels, fly tying box and contents. Ted was a fitter and
turner and he made his own vice and tools which he is still very proud of.
I would like to hold a silent auction for this gear and also clear some more excess stock in our
room, a BBQ, Rods, Fly Tying material, and Steel Cabinet.
Please attend to grab a bargain, Thursday 12th March.
Going Forward
Back in the November Flyline I mentioned the cost of printing and mailing out the magazine in
dollars and more importantly in time. There hasn’t been any discussion or opposition to this since
then and your committee believes it is time to act now. With the cost of postage going up this
month and most clubs already doing electronic delivery it would be prudent not to act. Please
make sure your email address is up to date. There are very few people who don’t have access to a
computer and the club will only be printing a limited number of copies so please try to help with
this transition.
Garage Sale Day
Sunday 29th March 10am to 12 noon.
Any member who wishes to sell second hand or new fishing gear,
bring it down and set up a table, great bargains can be found on these
days.

General Business:
1. The club seeks a treasurer and a FLBL editor. If members want club services, people have to put
up their hand to assist. If you can help please tell the committee ASAP.
2. Our sign at the Lilydale Lake entrance has not been noticed for many months. We shall explore
the storerooms and if not found, it will be replaced.
3. It was suggested a ‘Defibrillator’ is an essential item for our club considering the mean age of
our members. There was a good discussion about this and almost all members present agreed this
was a required article. We shall talk to the council, seek quotes and report back.
4. VFFA is hosting a dinner and Simon Gawsworth, a world champion caster and designer with
Sage and Rio will be a speaker. Peter Morse will also speak. This is on Friday 20th March at the
Celtic Club and the cost is $70. If interested in joining a table speak to Doug.

this up.

The most travelled fly fisherman...John Ditria in Cuba (2014)
I have been travelling o/s a lot this year through work, but took the opportunity to fish where I
could.
I’ve been to a couple of fancy places which were on my bucket list.
I have attached some pics from my time in Cuba where I chased tarpon & bonefish on the fly for
the week at ‘Jardines de la Reina’.
Regards
John Ditria
