MARCH 20, 2016 Reflection
PALM SUNDAY OF THE PASSION OF THE LORD
MARCH 20, 2016
Reflection
On this Palm Sunday, Our Savior Jesus Christ begins the
journey of his saving passion with his triumphal entry into Jerusalem for the completion of the Paschal Mystery. This celebration marks the beginning of Holy Week, ‘an odd name for a
week that recalls some of the unholiest events in history – the
capture, trial, and execution of Jesus.’ Today, Christians in the
‘fullness of faith’ demonstrate their solidarity with Christ as a
Victor, seeing him with the eyes of their faith ride on a colt.
Making the gesture of the Jews and endowed with its full significance, they hold their palms echoing the song of victory following the example of the Jews, “Hosanna to the Son of David!
Blessed is He who comes in the Name of the Lord, Hosanna in
the highest! After the Palm Sunday celebration, the faithful keep
the palms in their home as a witness to faith in Jesus Christ, the
Messianic King, and in his paschal victory. We acknowledge
him as our Messiah and Liberator.
But why is this Sunday called “Passion Sunday” while the
celebration is “Triumphal entry” which means a festive celebration of victory? As the pilgrims who took part in the procession
with palms and olive branches were wild with enthusiasm, some
Pharisees and Jewish leaders smelt danger in the great applause
coming from the crowd and subsequent command of influence.
So, in their feeling or fear of insignificance and inferiority, they
ordered Jesus to silence the mob. But Jesus who knew he was on
a salvific mission and not on a mission to grab power as they
thought, refused to such command. He said to them in reply, “I
tell you, if they keep silent, the stones will cry out!” From that
moment, the scene started changing with the Jewish leaders
scheming on how to kill him. Jesus knew all their evil plans and
remained focused on his mission. They turned the joy of his
triumph into passion which means suffering. The cries of adulation of Palm Sunday “Hosanna” – Praise Him turned into the
derision of Good Friday “Crucifige eum” – Crucify Him! The
passion or suffering went deeper with his bosom friends turning
against him. One betrayed him, another denied him; yet others
ran away abandoning him. These were the people he dined with
few hours before his ordeal started. The suffering continued with
false allegations and tortures. He was whipped, beaten, crowned
with thorns and stripped naked. But he accepted all for the love
of his brothers and sister.
Today, Jesus continues to suffer the pains, not the one
inflicted on him by the Jews of his time, but the ones inflicted by
our sins. The suffering of Jesus becomes even more powerful as
we continue to hurt and kill each other or commit sin. He suffered torture so that we could know that our loving God cares for
us so much that he is willing to suffer with us out of compassion.
There is more, his suffering heals us so that we do not have eternal suffering. His passion takes suffering and turns it into an
opportunity for mercy for us all. That is the meaning of Christ’s
passion which we celebrate during the Holy Week.

THE FEAST OF DIVINE MERCY
Novena Calendar
The first Sunday after Easter, which is
designated in “The Liturgy of the
Hours and the Celebration of the
Eucharist” as the “Octave Day of
Easter” It was officially called the
Second Sunday of Easter after the liturgical reform of Vatican II. Now, by the Decree of the Congregation for Divine
Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments, the name of
this liturgical day has been changed to: “Second Sunday of
Easter, or of Divine Mercy.” Blessed John Paul II made
the surprise announcement of this change in his homily at
the canonization of Sr. Faustina on April 30, 2000. There,
he declared: “It is important then that we accept the whole
message that comes to us from the word of God on this
Second Sunday of Easter, which from now on throughout
the Church will be called ‘Divine Mercy Sunday.’ Jesus
asked that the Feast of the Divine Mercy be preceded by a
Novena to the Divine Mercy which begin on Good Friday. Our Novena will be held in the church after Masses as
follows:
Good Friday
Holy Saturday
Easter Sunday

To fittingly observe the Feast of Mercy, we should:
1. Celebrate the Feast on the Sunday after Easter;
2. Sincerely repent of all our sins;
3. Place our complete trust in Jesus;
4. Go to Confession, preferably before that Sunday;
5. Receive Holy Communion on the day of the Feast;
6. Honor the Image of the Divine Mercy; and
7. Be merciful to others, through our actions, words, and
prayers on their behalf.
We will have a special hour of prayer before the Blessed
Sacrament on Divine Mercy Sunday, April 3 at 3:00
p.m. Father Robert will lead us in this time of prayer and
reflection. Join us as we pray together that God’s mercy
may touch our lives.

O’Grady Hall.
Safeguard The Children
Did you Know?
Not all predators fit a mold
Many people mistakenly believe that
predators fit into a mold, and that by
teaching children to avoid those kinds of
people, they will be safe. Another common belief is that
an abuser or predator would most likely be a stranger,
or a mean and scary person. Not all situations follow
this pattern. Parents should focus on teaching their
children how to handle uncomfortable situations, by
getting away immediately and going to a trusted adult.
Parents should also keep watch for signs of abuse or
distress in their children. For more information on protection from abuser stereotypes and a copy of the VIRTUS® article “A Step to Healing” email [email protected].
Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord
Mensaje para Reflexionar
Page Five
hemos rechazado el plan de Dios con nuestras vidas;
debemos detenernos a reflexionar ¿qué hemos hecho
cómo tu le has respondido.

1. Celebrar la Fiesta en el Domingo después de Pascua;
2. Arrepentirnos sinceramente de todos nuestros pecados;
3. Colocar nuestra entera confianza en Jesús;
4. Ir a Confesión, preferiblemente antes de este Domingo;
5. Recibir la Comunión en el día de la Fiesta;
6. Honrar la Imagen de la Divina Misericordia;
