some recollections about the
history of our Parish. Today we
publish some of the personal
reflections and experiences of
NINA GABRIEL, our long time

“My family moved to San Leandro from Oakland in
1981…The late Father Joe Ferreira blessed our home…
I remember the late Carmelita Cinco heading
the church social activities which included dances on
New Year's Eve and lunch activities. This was during
the times of the late Father Autard and later Father
Snyder.
In the mid 1990's, the late Bessie Parafina
started the "Filipino Organization" (we later changed it to
"Social Circle" to include the non-Filipino parishioners).
Norma de Ocampo was the president. Later, the late
Emmanuel del os Reyes and Sam Manese became
presidents. Pat Ocasion was Vice President, Myrna
Pedrosa was Treasurer, and myself was Secretary
(after the late Marieta Pestana). We sponsored dinner
dances, renting the hall of Saint Leander's Church. Father Snyder acted as our Adviser. He attended most of
our meetings and the dances. We also had Reno trips
which the late Dely Weberhardt actively handled, recruited parishioners and served lunch on the way. We
had raffles during the dances, solicited prizes. Bill
Haggerty was one of the donors of our prizes.
When Father Snyder left in 1998. he met with us
officers saying that we had raised a total of $90,000…
Father Thomas Duong Binh Minh succeeded him. We
continued raising funds although our membership was
dwindling. He requested us to help him count the weekly collections. He made the reports of the money collected and deposited the money in the bank…
In 2000, Father Thuong (Dominic) Nguyen exchanged places with Father Thomas… Cora Tuazon
headed the Finance Committee and took charge of raising funds. We had a yard sale, requested parishioners
to donate whatever they could dispense with…
The ground-breaking of the social hall occurred
in 2004, officiated by then Bishop Cummins. It was inaugurated in 2008... We learned later that we owed the
Diocese of Oakland $700.000… So we started PROJECT 400, with each parishioner pledging $2,500 for a
period of 4 years…

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
It’s almost midsummer day! One of the great hidden treasures of our liturgical calendar occurs this week. There are only
three “nativity” feasts on our calendar: for the Lord, the
Blessed Mother (September 8), and the Nativity of Saint John
the Baptist on June 24. Friday’s date is anchored by the Annunciation (March 25), when Mary learns not only of her own
child’s advent, but of Elizabeth’s child. We are exactly half a
year away from Christmas Eve. There are strong traditions
around this feast. Just as the winter solstice provides a rich vocabulary for Christmas, so does the abundance of light at midsummer inform this celebration. Just as at Christmas, a religious festival spills over into culture. As summer light reaches
its peak, the sun-drenched zones of northern Europe see people
staying up all night, kindling “St. John’s Fires” in the long
summer twilight. Bonfires seem to be the unifying force in all
these celebrations, kindled along the shores of the St. Lawrence
in Quebec and Montreal, with harbor illuminations in France.
You may be most interested in the custom in San Juan, Puerto
Rico, the Baptist’s own city. People there will leap into the sea
between midnight and dawn to honor John. Why not find your
way to a pool, a lake, or a sandy beach this week and plunge in
to recall your baptism? It’s a tradition!
