St. Matthew Parish - St. Matthew Church
St. Matthew Parish 1555 Glen Ellyn Road RECTORY & PARISH CENTER 630-469-6300 Fax Number 630-469-6302 Parish Website:www.stmatthewchurch.org School Website: www.stmatthewschool.org Glendale Heights, Illinois 60139 MASSES - Saturday Vigil Mass 5:00 PM Sunday - 8:00, 10:00, 12:00, 1:30 PM (Español), 6:00 PM Daily (Monday through Friday) 7:00 and 8:45 AM Saturday: 8:45 AM Almost everyone knows the story of the Resurrection of Jesus from the dead. In some way, it’s what brought you here this morning. Even if you got a ride from someone else, it’s knowledge of the resurrection story that brought you to St. Matthew’s Church. What are the significant details of the story? Crowds of people saw Jesus crucified and put to death. There is no doubt about that historical event. Many eyewitness were hostile to Jesus, some actually taking part in the crucifixion. A Roman soldier pierced his side with a lance, as a sort of death certificate. Then the body was put into a sealed tomb, complete with a guard. But not everyone witnessed the miraculous events that followed (Mark 16:1-7): “Very early, when the sun had risen, on the first day of the week, they came to the tomb. They were saying to one another, ‘Who will roll back the stone for us from the entrance to the tomb?’ When they looked up, they saw that the stone had been rolled back; it was very large. On entering the tomb they saw a young man sitting on the right side, clothed in a white robe, and they were utterly amazed. He said to them, ‘Do not be amazed! You seek Jesus of Nazareth, the crucified. He has been raised; he is not here. Behold the place where they laid him. But go and tell his disciples and Peter, ‘He is going before you to Galilee; there you will see him, as he told you.’” So almost everyone knows the story, but more importantly, do you know Christ? He is Risen! This means that he lives—now! It means that you can speak to him, know him, love him, follow him. Maybe these are obvious ideas—but do I live them? You can today—starting right now! “Lord,” we can say, “I came this morning to see you. You will be here in the flesh, your risen glorified body, at this Mass. People will say it again and again, ‘the Body of Christ.’ People will answer again and again, ‘Amen! I believe!’ Jesus I believe that small piece of bread is no longer bread at all—it is you! Please, come home with me today. Help me to see why you would die for me, for my life, for my family. You are crazy to love me so much. Help me at least to love you a little.” Here’s the secret, which I know, and which just may be starting to dawn on you. I know why you came this morning to St. Matthew. It was the Risen Lord, Jesus himself, who called you. He whispered in your ear, he tugged at your heart. It’s one of the reasons why I know that Jesus has risen from the dead: He is living and acting in your life. You seek Jesus of Nazareth. Wishing you and your families, your loved ones and even your enemies, the blessings of the Risen Lord, Fr. Jerome DIVINE MERCY SUNDAY APRIL 12 3:00-4:00 PM Holy Hour (not a Mass) MINISTRY OF PRAISE The Ministry of Praise letters are ready for pick-up the first, second or third Sunday of the month. The early Christian communities gathered around the Apostles, seeking more about the life and ministry of the Lord Jesus. Saint Paul told the baptized Colossians to “seek what is above.” Mary of Magdala went to the tomb, seeking to find the Lord’s body so that she could anoint it. We come to church on Easter Sunday seeking many things. For some of us, this is a once-a-year journey, when we seek connection with the foundations of the Christian faith. For others, this day is the culmination of a long journey of Lenten repentance. For the newly baptized, this is the first day of a new life filled with promise and expectation. Whatever it is that we seek, let us be inspired by the disciple whom Jesus loved who, when he saw the wrappings of cloth inside the empty tomb, “saw and believed.” Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
