Page |1 APRIL 2015 VOL 2 ISSUE 12 “Success is from the heart!” The tragedy in life doesn’t lie in not reaching your goal. The tragedy lies in having no goals to reach. - Benjamin Mays A Cheerleaders hope to inspire others. Cheerleading is not an easy sport and for some cheerleading skills come easier than others. But for Cheer Extreme Sanford and Western Harnett High School varsity cheerleader, Kaleigh Flaker, 16, certain cheerleading skills are especially difficult because she was born without her right hand. Kaleigh was born with Amniotic Band Syndrome (ABS) on February 1, 1999 to Robert and Yvonne Flaker of Sanford, NC. Her parents never wanted to treat Kaleigh different from their son, so when Kaleigh was four, Yvonne enrolled her in her first gymnastic class. This gymnastic class sparked Kaleigh’s love for tumbling. “I never truly realized how different I was from other kids in my neighborhood, so I never had the mindset that I couldn’t do anything.” Kaleigh and her friends would stay in the yard for hours just doing cartwheels and splits. “It seemed like every cartwheel I attempted I always fell on my bottom because I would put my nub down as if I had two hands, because that’s what my friends were doing and I thought I could too.” After many failed attempts at doing a cartwheel like her friends, Kaleigh had an outrageous thought of trying a one handed cartwheel. Kaleigh started off small by placing her hand on the ground and hopping to the other side. As Kaleigh would do this, Yvonne would encourage her. Kaleigh practiced this cartwheel day in and day out and finally she achieved something she never thought would be possible, a one handed cartwheel, with straight legs. At age seven, Kaleigh felt her cartwheels had improved and she wanted to try recreational cheerleading. With the support and love from her family, friends and coaches within 2 years of hard work at recreational cheerleading Kaleigh attended her first Cheerleading competition, Canam Cheerleading Nationals in Myrtle Beach. Kaleigh loved this competition and the experience of competing on a big stage with lights and cameras that she decided to further her cheerleading career. In seventh grade she made her middle school cheer team and pursued All-Star Cheerleading. Still only with her one handed cartwheel, Kaleigh started to focus on her tumbling more and by the end eighth grade Kaleigh accomplished her back tuck. Currently a sophomore at Western Harnett High school, Kaleigh is a varsity cheerleader and has just entered her 4th year in All Star Cheerleading at Cheer Extreme Sanford. A lifetime goal of Kaleigh is “to inspire others into accomplishing something bigger than they have ever imagined”. This goal is about to become a reality in July of 2015. Kaleigh was selected to become a Junior Coach with NubAbility Athletics Foundation in DaQuoin, Illinois. NubAbility Athletics Foundation is a one-of-a-kind non-profit organization dedicated to helping kids with limb loss get off the bench and into the game. Their team of high school, collegiate and professional athletes teaches the youth to not only play, but to play the best with less – and win. The NubAbility coaching staff is made up of volunteer athletes willing to share their experiences, skills, stories and faith with the next generation of athletes. In 2014, the third year of their All-Sport Summer Camp, more than 70 limb-different youth from 24 states descended upon Southern Illinois to learn from a roster of more than 30 accomplished coaches. Through three days of camp, these youth, ranging in age from 4 to 18, learned everything from the basics of their respective sports to workouts and drills to help them continually improve. Throughout the four days of camp each summer, limb-different athletes complete drills and skill-building exercises preparing them to get out of the stands, off the bench and into the game. Campers have the opportunity to participate in sessions for multiple sports, whether or not they have previous experience. This is an opportunity for a youth to try something new in a safe environment. “I am so enthusiastic about this opportunity to share my strengths and to help other children like me.” Follow us on: @ Cheer Extreme Sanford @ ceasanford @ceasanfordtumble @ CEASanford Page |2 REMINDER: If you are NOT returning to Cheer Extreme Sanford for the 2015 – 2016 competition season, A 30 day notice is required to exit the program and to cancel your bank draft.
