The 44 Filipino police commandos who died in a skirmish with Muslim rebel forces in Mamasapano, Maguindanao are hailed #Fallen44. In reality, they are
not fallen; for true heroes don’t fall, they soar. Photo by ph.news.yahoo.com.
Filos weigh in on SAF issue
Sympathy, calls for peace and justice conveyed
Filipinos in Australia relayed messages of sympathy
and calls for the Philippine
government to straighten up
its act as well as to pursue
the path of peace, instead of
an all-out war, following the
death of 44 Filipino police
commandos in Mamasapano,
Maguindanao who served
warrants of arrest for Malaysian bomb maker Zulkifli bin
Hir or Marwan and Filipino
bomb maker Basit Usman.
The members of the Special
Action Forces (SAF) were engaged in combat by Marwan,
who according to a report by
the Federal Bureau of Investigation, was likely killed in
the skirmish. Usman allegedly was able to escape. Both
were included in the US list
of most wanted terrorists,
and had reward money on
their heads.
Melba Marginson, Executive Director of Victorian Immigrant and Refugee Women’s Coalition and
also a Woman of Influence
2014 awardee, expressed
her support for pursuing the
peace process in Mindanao.
“Fallen 44 refers only to the
casualties of the military/
police arm of the Philippine
Government. There were 18
casualties in the MILF side
of the conflict and scores
also injured. The other fact
is that the target terrorist
‘Marwan’ was killed, which
made the Fallen 44 ‘Filipino
Heroes’. All these should
be viewed in the context of
the peace process which the
Aquino Government and the
MILF have put in motion after jointly signing the peace
accord last year. We should
not forget that it was the
Aquino Government that got
the MILF (biggest insurgency
group in Mindanao) sign for
lasting peace in Mindanao.
The misencounter that led to
the killing of 44 elite police

Saladmaster
Cookware
The Original and the Best
M
any Filipinos are already well aware
of the amazing benefits of cooking
with the award-winning and famous
Saladmaster range of cookware. Made
from 316 Ti, Saladmaster is the only cookware in the
world made with Titanium Steel sourced exclusively
from the best steel mills in the USA and Switzerland.
Beginning in 1946 with the invention of the
incredible Saladmaster machine, Saladmaster has
always been an innovator and a leader in the healthy
cookware market worldwide. The cookware is
manufactured in the USA with pride - always has been
and always will be. Now with successful operations
in over 55 countries, Saladmaster is truly a global
phenomenon in the direct sales cookware industry,
being voted repeatedly as the best cookware in the
world on various consumer websites.
Saladmaster has been a major hit with Filipino
people around the world now for more than 50 years.
Used and loved by celebrities such as Kris Aquino, Toni
Gonzaga, Gerald Anderson, Kim Chiu, Mariel Padilla
and many more, Saladmaster is perfect for cooking an
incredible range of Filipino, Asian and Western dishes.
Saladmaster allows people to cook delicious meals
using less oil, less salt and retaining more nutrition in
the food than traditional cooking methods.
Since coming into Australia 30 years ago,
Saladmaster has enjoyed a long period of great success
built upon a world–beating product, second-to-none
customer service, a genuine lifetime warranty, a high
standard of ethics and the incomparable Saladmaster
business opportunity, for full-time and part-time
Consultants. Now with SEVEN quality showrooms
around Australia, Saladmaster has the infrastructure to
offer free cooking classes for its thousands of customers
and world-class training for their prosperous sales
Consultants. Saladmaster in Australia is aiming to
double the number of showrooms nationally in the next
three years and has a real commitment to excellence
and long-term vision worth believing in.
As with all great products and successes such
as Saladmaster, there are always the questionable
brands that “pop up” that try to make some money
by misleading people into thinking that they, too,
are products and companies of quality. These
people don’t make the investment in engineering,
manufacturing, high quality materials and customer
service for consumers. They instead invest in lower
cost, lower quality knock-offs using inferior materials
from questionable sources and use “contract
factories” since they don’t have any manufacturing
experience, expertise or history. Saladmaster is the only
premium cookware product line that has a lifetime
warranty backed up by over 100 years of Regalware
manufacturing products in their own factories—that is
a lifetime warranty and a valuable commitment from a
well-known company that you can trust.
Make sure that the product you are getting is the
real deal so that you will be eligible for the Saladmaster
lifetime warranty and a lifetime of fun and free
Saladmaster cooking classes delivered by trained
experts in nutritious and delicious cooking!
Remember - Saladmaster innovates while others
can only imitate. If you want the highest quality healthy
cooking system made from the world’s best U.S.A.
and Swiss 316Ti Titanium steel, be sure to make the
smart investment – make sure it’s the one and only

Should we give peace a chance?
We have read and heard the news; seen
it in social media sites. Killings, massacres
and summary executions splashed on our
screens like these are the norm, not the
exception. We are gripped in terror, frustration and indignation, with the killing of two
Japanese nationals by ISIS. Here in Australia, the recent release of Al Jazeera reporter
Peter Greste from Egypt prison brought relief
to many of us. How did they phrase it? He
was deported back to Australia after being
in prison for 400 days for a terrorism-related
crime. Like the two Japanese nationals, one
of them a journalist, Greste was also caught
between a crossfire of opposing forces, in
the line of duty.
Just last week, 44 Filipino police commandos were killed in a clash with forces of
the Moro Islamic Liberal Front (MILF) and
its breakaway compatriots in the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters (BIFF) in
Mamasapano, Maguindanao. The police
were in the area to serve warrants of arrest
for Zulkifli bin Hir or “Marwan”, a bomb
maker and top terrorist in Southeast Asia
affiliated to the Jemaah Islamiya which has
links to Al Qaeda and Filipino bomb maker
Basit Usman. They raided the hut in which
they believed Marwan stayed, and Marwan
engaged our men which alerted the MILF
and BIFF forces. In the end, Marwan was
allegedly killed, along with 44 of the elite
police force, and 18 members of the MILF.
Meanwhile, Usman escaped the entrapment.
Social media was on fire with incensed
citizens who commended the heroism of
the 44 and condemned persons responsible
for the operations. Opposing opinions flew;
some supporting an all-out war, while others
still recommending a path for lasting peace.
We are still badly hurting from the injustice
which felled the best of our men—young,
strong and idealistic. However, we have to
bear in mind that the opposing force with
which they were in combat lost 18 men, and
some or all of them might be battle scarred
from years of fighting for sovereignty and
against poverty; they, too, were Filipinos.

Felix Pintado
I feel so lucky to be
born a Filipino
Last month, my wife Di and I
decided to take advantage of this
“quiet time” early in the New Year
to visit the Philippines for a few
days. I was visiting after many
years away and it was Di’s first
trip there. We travelled with a
couple of our close friends who
were able to take us around.
We travelled through many cities and towns - enjoying the people, their generous hospitality,
the ‘ang grabe’ traffic of Manila,
and so much singing and dancing. We took in the sights, sounds
and scents of this ‘blessed land of
untiring hope’, as Cardinal Tagle
described it.
Our outings took us to Imus
and Bacoor in Cavite, Tagaytay
and Taal in Batangas, a kalesa
tour of Fort Santiago and San
Agustin Church in Intramuros,
Mall of Asia and many other
malls, and Bonifacio Global City
in Makati. While in Luzon, we
went a bit further north through
Nueva Ecija (where my grandfather was born in 1896), Nueva
Vizcaya, Banaue and Kiangan in
Ifugao and also parts of Bulacan.
We even dropped in on a Gawad
Kalinga gathering at the GK Enchanted Farm – a privilege to see
such generosity of spirit in action.
I was also able to visit the
Pintado family grave site at Manila South Cemetery where my
grandfather, great grandfather
and uncles and aunts – most of
whom passed away during the
liberation of Manila in February
1945 - are rested.
There was a familiarity that
awakened within as I met and
mingled with my kababayans,
some of whom were members
of my own family. I took every

in Mindanao grow weary with the daily
grind of combat and hunger. Our soldiers
and police officers hold the fort so that no
matter where we are in the Philippines or
anywhere in the world, we could feel secure
in a democratic society where we enjoy
the fruits of our labour. Our situations are
very different, but the reality is, we are all
Filipinos. Pardon us if we hark for peace.
The Philippines is not Luzon, Visayas and
Mindanao but a conglomeration of all these
islands.
Having said that, however, we believe
that peace stands no chance without justice.
Those who died from this particular skirmish and their families deserve to know who
should be accountable and to be assured that
someone will be held accountable. We share
in their quest to put to right the sacrifice
their husbands, fathers and brothers gave
for the country. A Board of Inquiry is currently investigating the case surrounding the
Masasapano carnage. We should be vigilant
and should demand the truth and nothing
short of it. This is the least that is due the
surviving families and us as Filipinos. And
if we want peace, the approach should be
inclusive, by which stance considers the
situation of people in Mindanao. The truth
is, if we grew up in another region or in
Manila, we know very little of the Muslims
in Mindanao. And if we live in a first world
country like Australia, the more blurred our
impression of them, by dint of distance and
of what is only made known to us by media.
The peace process should proceed, first and
foremost, with mutual trust. And we can
begin by identifying our common ground,
that is, our being Filipino.
Without justice, equity and trust, peace
will truly be an uphill battle, perhaps even
an impossible dream.

Always we begin again – St
Benedict
On the weekend, I went
out for a walk with my husband and little boy. It was a
beautiful morning, the sky
was blue and made an even
deeper shade of blue because of the lush greenery
in my surrounds. It was a
beautiful neighbourhood,
and we have chosen well
where to establish a home.
During our walk however
there were at least three
houses with a ‘For Sale’
sign. Chris and I pondered
at the story behind this sign.
What was it that made some
decide to sell their home?
Last night I had the opportunity to arrive at an
answer when I saw my
neighbour in front of her
house. She too had a ‘For
Sale’ sign on her lawn. She
was tending to her garden,
and I felt ashamed at the
state of mine in front of
hers. She had taken care
of her home lovingly all
through the six years that
we have been neighbours.
I enquired about the sign
and I thought I detected
regret in her voice when
she answered, “Because we
have to.”
I was struck by the brevity of her answer, like she
didn’t need any more words,
and also by the familiarity
of it, like it could have come
from me. It could have
been the very same line I
uttered 10 years ago when
we packed our belongings
and the sum of our life into
three luggages and two
boxes headed for Australia.
Though we came willingly,

Conversatio
I know how it feels to have
your feet planted firmly in
two different places – one
onwards to the future, and
the other one reluctant to let
go and take a big step.
A street separated me
from my neighbour but I
felt we understood each
other without needing to
cross the distance with
our words. As we both
went back to our gardens I
wondered whether I should
have said more, and strived
harder to offer comfort. I
wanted to let her know I
know how it felt to lose a
home. But there was also
something else.
I wanted to tell her that
while you can easily lose a
home, so too can you gain a
new one. You do not really
leave the old one behind.
While you don’t physically
bring it with you, the life
you have made there is
something you carry with
you forever.
That is part of the cycle
of life: the impermanence,
the continuous changing
and shifting, the constant
movement.
As we stand at the precipice,
As we ponder on the next
step,
As we hesitate on the cliff of
change,
So too do we exalt at each
rise and fall.
So too do we rejoice at each
losing and gaining.
And while we may mourn at
the end,
So too do we delight as we
begin again.
Always we begin again.

again and just picking up
where we left off.
From Aguinaldo’s house in
Cavite, where our country’s
unifying independence was
declared, to Rizal Park and
the Rizal Museum at Fort
Santiago, to the historic shrine
in Kiangan marking ‘the climax of the Filipino nation’s
glorious resistance against a
foreign invader during the
Second World War’, it was
amazing to experience and be
inspired by these aspects of
our country’s rich and varied
history. I feel so lucky to be a
part of this nation and to have
been born a Filipino.
From our many conversations, we had a sense that
people were feeling positive
about the current administration’s commitment to set the
foundations for long-term
growth and development.
The newspapers also reported efforts to fight corruption and enable trade and
commerce to grow and make
the Philippines attractive to
investment.
There was also a palpable expectation, wherever
we went, of the Pope’s impending visit and the many
blessings it would bring that
would enrich faith, lift up
spirits and unify the people.
Wherever we went, we also
witnessed bayanihan – the
spirit of communal unity
and cooperation – neighbour
helping neighbour, working together sometimes in
small groups and sometimes
in large numbers towards a
common goal. It is a uniquely
Filipino spirit that makes
seemingly impossible feats
possible through the power of
unity and cooperation.
This last observation rings
particularly true today, 30
January, which has been
declared a day of national
mourning in the Philippines
in honour of the 44 members
of the Philippine National
Police Special Action Force
that fell during an armed en-
counter in Maguindanao on
25 January, and as a sign of
solidarity with their families.
It also points to three ‘resolutions’ for 2015:
• That we reawaken the
unique communal spirit of
bayanihan so that it permeates the hearts and minds
of Filipinos in Victoria.
• That we come together to
celebrate our fiestas and
gatherings as one FilipinoAustralian family, without
animosity or division.
• That we encourage businesses and individuals to
visit the Philippines and
explore the opportunities
and advantages that exist
there for business, tourism
and investment, thereby
enriching both countries
- Australia and the Philippines.
While Di and I are still
‘recovering’ from such a rich
experience, we have already
started to talk about our next
visit, probably to the Visayas
region where my mother and
her family come from!
I encourage you to take
some time to consider 2015
as the year to visit the Philippines!

Desiree Blair - I’m known
to be a spontaneous thrill
seeker who loves a good ol’
adventure. I’d try anything
at least once! Sarah Awwad - I am a nurse,

I enjoy the simple things in

food and my crazy Filipino
and Palestinian families!
The show is hosted by Julia Vogl and Tristan Manas.
Natasha Angeleski - I am a
busy housewife who loves
my husband and works full
time as a Senior Property
Manager in real estate. I
am professional, fun and
friendly but above all, downto-earth.

enjoys good food and drinks,
plays netball. I have participated in runs for charity such
as the Melbourne Marathon,
The Colour Run and the

good role model will be the
biggest success any career
can provide.
Jessica Marshall - I am a

musical theatre performer.
I love to smile, be different

an attempt to hide my awkward ability to be ‘sexy’ over
‘nerdy science geek’.
Natalia Bonita - I’m a happygo-lucky kind of girl who
always stays positive. I love
my family and friends and I
always believe in dreaming.
Dreaming is what makes
you strive for excellence to
become the person you’ve

Amanda Sierras - I’ve participated in promotional and

show myself. I can give a
cute or sexy look. I am working on becoming an international singer and a model. I

Apple Moody - Most people
view me as a cool, bubbly,
sexy, gorgeous top chick . I’m
very friendly, loyal, funny,
and helps others who are
mostly in need of support
by raising x-amount dollars
to charities. To me, beauty
is not just about the physical appearance but what is
within your heart and soul.
Rana Tabach - Ever since
I was young, I’ve always
watched modelling and pageant shows on TV and always pictured myself in one.
I love fashion and clothes. I
also want to show girls my
age that they don’t have to be
conscious about their looks
and body. Fashion is a deep
passion of mine.
Jennifer Anne - I am a single
Mom of two beautiful children. I love getting out into
the world and trying out
anything and everything.
Also I grew up with a huge
Filipino family - under one
roof. The SALVO family gave
me around 65 first cousins!
So never a dull moment in
my crazy life.
Jeannette Valencia - I’m a
runway model, film actor,
brand ambassador, an aspiring young entrepreneur and
a nurse by profession. I want
to be remembered as someone who influences people
to chase their dreams and

Filos weigh in on
SAF issue
Continued from page 1
forces should not derail the
peace process, instead the incident should strengthen the
resolve of both the Aquino
Government and MILF to
be more vigilant against any
force that will try to stop it.
This strong alliance is needed more than ever because
of the global terrorism being
waged by Al-Qaeda and its
allies.”
In a statement released
by the Cebuano Association
of Australia Inc, the group
expressed its condolences
to the families of the 44
members of the elite police
force, citing that some of
them were from Cebu. It
also called for swift action
and justice for the Fallen
44. Members from our community also expressed their
sentiments. Irma Modesto
criticised the passing of the
buck among agencies in-
volved. “Collateral damage
resulted in political fingerpointing. ‘He says, she says’
is not helping the situation.
Fallen44 may have died in
vain.” Dom Lobriza gave his
thoughts on accountability.
He said, “I hope their deaths
is not proven to be unnecessary. In my opinion, full
responsibilty lies on the
shoulder of SAF chief for the
carnage. He made the operational decisions, rightly or
wrongly, he must be made
accountable.”
On the other hand, Ellen
Desear shared her thoughts
on how government is dealing with the issue. “Deceitful
and primitive. It’s all a joke
and it ain’t funny. The government should serve the
interest of the people, not expanding their political clout.”
Meanwhile, Thad Mangalino
lauded the sacrifice of the
44 SAF commandos. “We
can continue debating about
who is responsible? Who
is at fault? What was their
strategy? But at the end of
the day, those 44 men will
not be able to see their loved
ones again. What we can take
away and admire is their love
for the motherland, standing
up and facing the challenge
head on. My thoughts go to
their families, and I pray that
they will not be forgotten.”
A Board of Inquiry (BOI)
was established by the Philippine National Police to
investigate the 25 January
bloody encounter between
the Special Action Forces
and the combined forces of
the Moro Islamic Liberation
Front (MILF) and its breakaway group, the Bangsamoro Islamic Liberation Front
(BIFF). The clash left 44 SAF
members, at least 17 MILF
members, and some civilians
dead. The BOI will gather
more than 400 testimonies
for its investigation.
Lest we forget, our 44 heroes.

sue studies in drama and

Torre live on stage. Unfortunately, I did not end up
finishing it, as a different
path beckoned me.
Natalie Cole, daughter of
music legend Nat King Cole,
calls her book a journey of
loss and gain. In her memoir,
she tells of “the life-threatening illness and recovery
and the story of a death
that brought new life.” One
needs to read it to fully appreciate it. But what caught
my attention are her words:
“I feel compelled to tell
you this story because I believe that it will illustrate
the goodness of a living
God... we all have our
stories... I realise though
that those stories are not of
our own making. God is the
storyteller. He is the creative King of kings. He sets
us out on a path. Afraid or
uncertain, we believe that
by grabbing control over
every event in our lives, we
can direct our own paths.
That is an illusion. Perhaps
we have control for an hour
or a day, but here comes
the storm, here comes the
tidal wave of circumstances that knocks us to the
ground... all we know is
that the God of love is
shrouded in mystery...
We invoke His Spirit by
living out His message –
to love always, to love
extravagantly, to love
even those who wish us
harm. It is a challenging, difficult, radical
love. But by living
such love, we guarantee ourselves peace
within. Our losses
become our gains.

In my own life,
I have observed
that difficult moments can be handled in two waysthey can make me
bitter or better. If approached with anger, fear, and resentment, the situation
becomes a poisonous
arrow sped at others
but ricochets back to
me. If I surrender it to
love, the crisis becomes
an opportunity to build inner strength, courage, serenity and a time to wait for the
Lord’s consolation.
February is the month of
love. In my 30 years of marriage, I have to admit there
is no longer that romantic
passion over dinner with
wine and roses and chocolates. There is sometimes a
lame attempt to duplicate
old times. But I need to be
honest that my definition of
love is much larger than this
now. But without the gift
of the Holy Spirit, I cannot
awaken the slightest love
to God. Only in the Holy
Spirit can my heart be filled
with love and then I am able
to love God, my family, my
friends, my community and
even my so-called enemies.
I need to build that deeper
faith in God’s love as the
greatest power in the world.
Only love truly brings us

Overseas Filipinos remembered in Pope visit
During the Philippine
papal visit of Pope Francis,
the role of and challenges
faced by our overseas Filipinos were acknowledged
and recognised.
In his first ever message
in the country before high
government officials, the
diplomatic corps and guests
in Malacañang Palace, Pope
Francis referred to the “oft-
neglected contribution of
Filipinos of the diaspora
to the life and welfare of
the societies in which they
live.”
During the final press
meeting conducted by Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle
and Father Federico Lombardi, SJ, Director of the
Holy See Press Office, a foreign correspondent asked
Photos by Roy Lagarda, www.cbcpnews.com
Cardinal Tagle how he intended to respond to the
Pope’s challenge of bringing
about evangelisation.
Cardinal Tagle reiterated
what he said in an earlier interview where he
acknowledged that “the
presence of overseas Filipino workers in many places
across the world is for us an
evangelising moment. And
we now feel the responsibility of giving them initial
formation so that when
they leave the country they
could be equipped to contribute to the life of the
Church wherever they are”.
In Pope Francis’ encounter with families at the Mall
of Asia, Ediza Pumarada, the
spouse of an overseas Filipino in Singapore, was one
of three speakers chosen
to give a testimony. Edna
joined a ministry dedicated
to families of migrant workers when she observed that
these families become broken and children live astray.
Steadfast in her faith, Edna
overcame the challenges of
being in a migrant family,
standing as mother and
father to her daughter and
overcoming her feeling of
isolation, through prayer.
Her joining the ministry is
her way of helping other
families cope with the difficulty of families who are
left behind by parents who
have to work abroad.
The State and Apostolic
visit of Pope Francis to the
Philippines was from 15 to
19 January 2015.

Dolloso stars
in ABC series
Filipino actor Felino
Dolloso will play the role
of Kai-le, one of the major
characters in Maximum
Choppage, the first Australian kung fu comedy series in
Australia. The show, which
will be aired on ABC2, was
voted as among the Top 15
must-watch list in 2015 by
dailylife.com.au.
Maximum Choppage follows the life of Simon Chan
who has returned to his
hometown of Cabramatta,
after his mum sent him to
learn “the art” of kung fu
— instead she sent him to
art school. It is based on a
fictional Cabramatta where
gangs terrorise the community.
Expect top-notch performance as the Concert
King, Martin Nievera rocks
Melbourne with his medley
of songs and funny antics.
Performing is his passion
and he never disappoints
his fans. For sure, there
would never be a dull moment as Martin, together
with musical director Louie
Ocampo and the other Filipino local performers, stage
a spectacular show titled
“3D (Tatlong Dekada)” on
10 May 2015 at the Robert
Blackwood Hall, Monash
University in Clayton.
“In my three decades in
the music industry, with
Mr Louie Ocampo, we have
put together a show full of
surprises and guarantee that
the audience will surely
enjoy the show,” Martin
told The Philippine Times.
The Melbourne concert is
part of his 30th anniversary
concert tour which started
in Manila and now making
international rounds. He
will also hold concerts in
Sydney and Brisbane.
“I feel so excited to come
back to Australia after several years. It is with great
pleasure and honour to entertain our fellow Filipinos
in Australia,” he said. He is
calling his fans in Australia
to bring along their family
and friends to the concert,
“Let us continue to support
each other and the Filipino
community, and the Philippine music industry for
continued enjoyment of Filipino entertainment by the
young Filipino-Australian
generation.”
Martin started his career
in 1982 and was introduced
as the son of timeless balladeer Bert Nievera. Surprisingly, he rose to fame too
quickly as he charmingly
invaded the concert stage
and television shows. To
this day, his performance
in ASAP Live is one to
watch. Filipinos admire his
powerful voice, energetic
stage movements and his
easy rapport with his audience. His songs, Be My Lady,
Each Day With You, Holiday,
Please Don’t Throw My Love
Away, Ikaw Ang Lahat Sa
Akin, Say That You Love Me,
Kahit Isang Saglit and You
Are My Song have become
timeless.
Local Filipino artists in
Victoria such as Kalapati Band, Charlene Sotelo,
Alyssa Limbo, Mary Ann
Van Der Horst and Nino
Deomano will also perform
with Martin.
Tickets prices are at $110,
$95 and $75. For ticket
and sponsorship enquiries,
please contact Lito Limbo
on 0425-832-309 or Josie
Sotelo on 0430-387-989.

APCO assists visiting Pinoy
Dr Cen Amores hands over APCO’s $1000 charity cash donation to Tatay Oscar and his wife.
It was witnessed by Club Filipino Illawarra’s president, Mir McCauley.
Richard Ford
NSW—The Alliance of Philippine Community Organisations, Inc (APCO) started
2015 with charity assistance.
Tatay Oscar from the Visayas
was the first recipient of
APCO’s charity – a cash
donation of $1,000 when
he had to undergo an emergency operation while on a
tourist visa.
A few months ago, Tatay
Oscar and his wife came
to visit their daughter and
her family in Wollongong.
It was during that time that
Tatay Oscar’s life turned
upside down when he was
diagnosed with bowel cancer
and was advised to undergo
surgery immediately. Being
on a visitor visa, Tatay Oscar
was not entitled to avail of
Medicare assistance for his
treatment.
In fact, their house in the
Visayas was destroyed by
super typhoon Haiyan last
year. His family could not
afford to pay for his soaring medical bills so a friend
of Tatay Oscar’s daughter,
Malyn Vasquez who is the
Treasurer of Club Filipino
Illawarra, appealed for APCO’s assistance. CFI and
other Filipino organisations
in Wollongong had earlier
held a fund-raising activity
for Tatay Oscar’s immediate
assistance.
As Dr Cen Amores was
preparing for her 65th birthday thanksgiving party, she
suggested to the APCO Board
to appeal to her guests not
to give her any present but
instead, asked them for cash
donations for APCO charities. Dr Cen had in mind,
Tatay Oscar to share part of
her birthday cash presents.
APCO’s $1000 cash donation to Tatay Oscar was given
during the 25th Anniversary
celebration of Club Filipino
Illawarra, Inc, a founding
member of APCO. Tatay
Oscar and his family were
overwhelmed by APCO’s
gesture of love to a kababayan whom they have not
event met before offering the
cash assistance.

The charm of short-term gains
The Inner
Game
Mervin Medel
THAD MANGALINO
The stories we tell ourselves
Have you ever been in
a situation in which you
are faced with uncertainty,
doubt and fear?
What did you do? Did
you push through and triumphed? Or did you stop
dead on your tracks and
pursued something else? I
bet that there were voices
in your head telling you
that “this thing is a piece
of cake!” “If so and so can
do it…So can you!” On the
flip side, the voice could be
saying the opposite “Why
try?” “I am not as good as the
others”. Ladies and Gents, I
will tell you now. The voice
in your head that screams
the loudest wins, the idea/
thought that is blasted in
the front of your mind will
overcome and produce the
outcome.
The reality is the stories
that we continually tell ourselves will determine our
future. So what stories are
you telling yourself? Can you
imagine for one second an
MMA fighter about to step
into the cage challenging for
the Welterweight title, and
on the back of his mind he
is saying “geez that dude is
looking strong I hope I don’t
get badly damaged.” Whereas another MMA fighter
walking towards the cage
tells himself “Training camp
went well, I am prepared,
and this is my moment!”
Whose story will have a
happy ending? Who will
have the better outcome?
When we have our inner
dialogue and we start to
rattle off the stories in our
mind, be mindful that you
are embedding commands
to your subconscious mind.
Your subconscious does not
know what is real and what
is pretend, so if you tell the
story that you are the victim
and you never get a lucky
break then this will manifest
in your life someway somehow. What needs to happen
is to change the channel
that you are listening to,
turn the pessimist voice
into the optimist, encouraging voice that you would be
happy to listen to.
With the short moment
we have, we won’t have
time to discuss the intricacies and the inner workings of our subconscious
mind. To simplify it,
all you
need to know is to keep telling yourself a positive and
inspiring story that makes
you the victor and not the
victim. Create your own
happily ever after in your
mind, and soon it will show
up in your life.
Until next time, Stay FOCUSED!

Some things just take time:
you can’t produce a baby in
one month by getting nine
women pregnant. – Warren
Buffet (became a millionaire through stock market
investing)
One reason why segments
like Juan for all, all for Juan
and Laban o Bawi of Eat Bulaga are popular is, many like
to play a game of fortune.
Many like to queue in
lotto outlets and bet in casinos to try their luck. In other
words, many just prefer the
short and easy way than
taking the hard one.
Sadly for them, lady luck
never meets them in the eye.
In the stock market, there
is a culture of trying to make
a quick buck. And many are
satisfied when they profit
a few dollars or pesos in
a day’s trading. Not bad
though.
The speculator
I asked an expert one time
about the trend of DMC
(David M. Consunji, Inc.)
stock by looking at ‘moving
averages.’ It’s a kind of stock
analysis based on price averages within a number of
days, say 50, to spot a trend.
It suggests that a trader
buys shares when he sees
an upward trend and sells
when the trend is in a downhill.
That guy saw a downward
trend coming and told me
that it’s an indicator to sell.
I didn’t sell, however. Its
price still went up and I
then sold my shares in April
2013 eight months after
what he told me.
Though his analysis is
based on moving averages,
which to some is considered
reliable, I still consider it as
speculation.
A speculator is someone
who tries to time the market. He moves in and out
like dancing the tinikling.
He goes in when he sees an
upward trend and out when
it’s downward.
Benjamin Graham, the
teacher of Warren Buffett,
describes it best when he
says: It is the essential character of the speculator that
he buys because he thinks
stocks are going up, not because they are cheap; and
conversely when [stocks are
going down] he sells.
They’re like guys who
like one-night stands and
call it romantic; they don’t
like long-term relationships;
they’re afraid of commitment. They just like short
time and captivated by it.
They also find excitement in listening to tips
and rumors to make money
swiftly. The excitement
they have during a bull
market, however, may turn
to anxiety when that same
bull runs off the cliff. The
aim of making money the
quick way may actually end
up losing it quick.
During the 2008 market
crash, many lost money, lots
of money. And most of them
I believe were speculators or
short-term oriented traders.
Most were simply in a hurry
to sell even at a loss.
Success story
Many times I heard and read
experts say, ‘don’t be greedy.’
I know they’re pointing to
day traders telling them to
sell whenever they make a
considerable profit.
But how many times can
traders be successful?
Don’t confuse luck with
success. The true measure
of success is consistency.
Success takes time.
If in one trade a trader
makes money but doesn’t
in the second, fourth, and
so on, that’s luck. Success
is making money year in
and year out, whether the
market is up or down.
A week, a month, or even
a year’s performance can’t
even be a gauge for success
in the market.
Warren Buffet says, “…
one year is far too short a
period to form any kind
of an opinion as to investment performance, and
measurements based upon
six months become even
more unreliable.”
The funny thing is, many
are fascinated with luck in
the stock market. So, a lot do
resort to technical analysis
and listen to tips and rumors to have a quick money.
Always quick money.
Let me tell you Warren’s
record. He has an average
return of 20 percent not in
two years or three but in
48 years!
If Warren became a billionaire, those who stayed
with him for years (those
who didn’t sell) became
millionaires. That’s the right
way to meet success in the
eye.
Never be captivated with
the charm of one-night
stands in the market. Stay
committed to wonderful
businesses.
