A Message from Rabbi Greenspan
People Count!
Maintaining a synagogue is a challenge these days. Like any business, it takes sufficient
capital, human resources, ingenuity and vision. It also takes both lay and professional
leadership. The career that I began over thirty years ago is different from the one in
which I find myself working these days. Technology has changed congregational life,
society is different and the people that I serve have different expectations and desires.
We are facing unprecedented financial and demographic challenges.
But a synagogue is not a business. No matter how enterprising the staff and the lay
leaders may be, a synagogue's success and vitality is measured not by the bottom line
but by the rank and file; by how its members participate in Jewish life; by the depth of
their commitment to Jewish values and ideas, and by the sense of community they
share.
Rabbis cantors and educators, then, must not only be good at what they do; they must
also be personal role models. If they do not respect the people they serve or the
members of the congregation don't respect them, then there is little hope for the
congregation. •They must communicate a sense of authenticity in their actions. The
same is true for congregational leadership. A synagogue leader must be committed to
the values and ideals of the congregation. To use a business metaphor, they have to
believe in the product that they're selling. More than that, they have to be one of the
best customers.
Willie Gurman and Silvia Levy are not only effective leaders. They are personal and
religious role models, who continue to learn, grow and participate in Jewish life. It has
been thrilling to watch their spiritual development over the past several years.
Willie's journey began before he became involved in congregational leadership. He
began by asking himself, "What does being Jewish mean to me? Where does it fit into
my life? How can I become a better Jew?" Step by step, he has increased his
knowledge and participation in Jewish life. He studies the weekly Torah portion,
attends daily minyan regularly and puts on tefillin religiously. If you want to know what
it means to be a committed Conservative Jew, just look at Willie. Silvia, too, continues
to set an example for others. She became an adult Bat Mitzvah several years ago and
she continues to develop her Jewish skills, chanting both Torah and Haftorot. Like her
brother, she has helped our congregation through her involvement in many areas of
synagogue life including Life Long Learning and fund raising. But you know — the best
thing I can say about Willie and Silvia is that they are among the nicest people I know!
Willie and Silvia are role models. In honoring them we are holding up an example to
every member of our congregation. It's not the bottom line that makes for a great
synagogue but the people who are committed to Jewish living, learning and loving.
Mark B. Greenspan
A Message From Our President
Lailah Echat B’Kuba – “One Night in Cuba”
It seems somewhat strange to be writing the introduction for this year’s Journal Gala, as an honorary recipient, since it is
the President who usually writes some kind words to the honorees. So let me start off by saying that the OJC Journal
Committee made an excellent choice in selecting my sister, Silvia Levy, to be recognized. Silvia is an involved and
committed member of OJC and in the overall Oceanside community. As her “younger” brother, she set the example for
me to follow. This was not easy. I have always admired her as well as others that volunteer their time to be on
committees and serve as Officers and Trustees. I certainly never imagined being that involved. So part of who I am, is
due to Silvia setting that example for me to follow. Now I am obligated to say a few kind words of our 2nd honoree ….
me.
It is my honor to be involved. Thank you to the congregation for entrusting me to be President. I hope in this past year I
have lead by example. Being President certainly does not mean that you know more than anyone else. In fact, there are
far more knowledgeable and creative people in our congregation that I admire. When I was installed last year as
President, I addressed the congregation about the many individuals that have motivated and inspired me to that point in
time. In this past year there have been so many more that I have had the privilege to meet and get to know.
L’dor v’dor – From Generation to Generation. These words were selected by my wife Jan to be prominently displayed on
my son Michael’s Bar Mitzvah invitation. These words reflect the lessons and examples set forth by my parents. My
parents had to make decisions, in particular to leave their homeland of Cuba so that our family would live in a country
with freedoms that are guaranteed. Difficult choices were made and I am fortunate that I did not have to make them.
They were made for me. It is the reason for this Journal’s theme of Lailah Echat B’Kuba – “One Night in Cuba”, a phrase
coined by Ric Stark, an Officer of OJC. Silvia and I celebrate our Jewish Cuban heritage, and bring you a small taste of the
Island. The men are dressed in guayaberas (a shirt considered Cuban formal wear) and the women in tropical attire.
Your senses will be ignited with the foods and sounds of Cuba. And smells of the Cuban cigars.
It is my suggestion that this Gala is about more than just recognizing Silvia and myself. It recognizes all of those around
us. The common bond is a kehillah (community) with a desire to teach and learn. Its members contribute their time
and money so that it continues to exist and so that we can be the example for those that follow. It does not ask what
can the shul give us, rather what can we give back. How can we improve it so it remains a strong example to the
community of Jewish learning and living? We learn to contribute with our heart and soul. This Gala is about recognizing
a community celebrating together all the good that we have experienced this past year, and give wholeheartedly to its
future.
My accomplishments as President is because of the love, support, motivation and inspiration I receive at home. Jan –
thank you and I love you passionately. How lucky I am to have you in my life. You are by my side all the time and are as
committed to OJC as a place of learning, involvement and participation. Our love of Judaism has grown stronger
together and has made us better for it. It is a journey we will continue together.
A special thanks to the co-chairs of the Journal Committee, Sharon and Ed, and the members of the committee, for their
commitment and devotion in organizing this Gala.
Thank you.
Willie Gurman
MESSAGE FROM THE JOURNAL DINNER-DANCE COMMITTEE
This evening, it gives us great pleasure to honor two members
of “mishpacha” Gurman. Willie is our current President and is
finishing his first year in office. His strong leadership bodes
well for our future. Silvia is a member of our Board of
Trustees and has served as Chairman of Fund Raising. They
are a dynamic brother and sister combination.
In different ways, they have made Beth Shalom/Oceanside
Jewish Center a better synagogue. We owe both of them a
debt of gratitude and hope that they will continue “L’dor
V’Dor” from generation to generation.
We would like to thank the members of our committee for
their dedication and support.

Biography's Beth Shalom /. Oceanside Jewish Center is proud to honor Willie Gurman
and Silvia Levy
In 1966, Willie Gurman and his sister Silvia Levy immigrated to the United
States from Cuba along with their parents Flora and Julio and younger brother Gabe.
Leaving Havana with literally just the clothes on their back they left their homeland
Cuba. With the help of Jewish organizations and family who had already left Cuba to
come to America, they traveled to Curacao (an Island off the coast of Venezuela) for
a few months before settling in Brooklyn, New York. There they were enrolled in
school, Willie in the first grade and Silvia in the second. Family and friends helped
them to embrace their new environment.
In 1982, Willie became a citizen of the United States and legally changed his
name from Guillermo to William. In 1983, he graduated from Pratt Institute with a
Bachelor’s degree in Architecture. That same year he married his High School
sweetheart Jan. They lived in Brooklyn, NY until moving to Oceanside in 1994. They
have three children, Michael, 24- an attorney, Sara 22- majoring in Occupational
Therapy at Ithaca College and Candice 19- majoring in Speech and Hearing Sciences
at Cortland University. Their daughters attended the OJC nursery school and all
three children attended Hebrew School at OJC. Willie coached little league baseball
and soccer in Oceanside and the OJC basketball team in the JCC league. Before
being installed as OJC’s president in June 2011, Willie served on the Board of
Trustees (2005-07), Recording Secretary (2007-09) and Executive VP (2009-11).
Generally you will see him daily at the morning minyan service where he is
affectionately called “jefe”, a nickname given to him at his installation. He enjoys
reading Torah and Haftorah at both the monthly Kol HaNeShama service and in the
main sanctuary on Shabbats. Willie really enjoys talking to and getting to know the
members of OJC family.
(continued on next page)
In 1982, Silvia also became a citizen of the United States. She has
an Associates degree in Laboratory Technology and a Bachelor’s Degree in Biology
from Brooklyn College. In 1981 she met Steve while doing an internship at
Brookdale Hospital. They got married in 1984 and moved to Oceanside in
1992. They have 3 daughters - Julie, a Physical Therapist, Jessica a soon to be High
School Math Teacher and Lauren an art director at an Advertising Agency. Silvia
quickly became involved in the Oceanside Community by serving as Co- President of
PTA in school #9 as well as Co-President of the Oceanside Chapter of Hadassah. She
has been on the OJC Board of Trustees for the past 8 years and participated on
several committees. She has chaired the adult education committee as well as the
fundraising committee. At OJC she learned to read Hebrew and became an adult Bat
Mitzvah. She continues to be a part of the Annual group reading of
the Shavuot Haftorah. Silvia enjoys reading Torah at the monthly Kol Ha
NeShama. Her first Haftorah was shared with her brother Willie at OJC and has
since gone on to read Haftorah solo.
Silvia and Willie are awed by the outpouring of affection from the OJC
community. They are blessed to share this wonderful evening with family and
friends.
OJC holds a special place in their hearts. Willie and Silvia are humbled and
honored to be recognized at this year’s gala.
May Willie and Silvia continue to grow from strength to strength

Willie,
We grew up together, in our little one bedroom apartment in
Canarsie with our parents and baby brother Gabby, sharing a room
for most of our lives.
We walked to school together, had family vacations together, we've
read torah together,.. We were married less than a yr apart and had
children basically one year after the other.. Keeping our parents very
busy as grandparents....
We are siblings, playmates and friends.
Above and beyond, the one thing that we truly share is our love for
our family. How important family is to us and that has been instilled
by our parents, and I'm sure we have passed it down to our children.
We’re always there for each other , in good times and in bad.
You are a great husband, father, a so-so son, and a terrific brother.!!!!
You amaze me, when I see you on the bema, making your Shabbat
announcements or at our board meetings, calmly running the
meeting when all everyone wants to do is ...take a chunk out of you!!
I sit there and think to myself.. Wow, that’s my brother!
And of course, this celebration would not be complete without my
wonderful husband Steven, our 3 amazing daughters Julie, Jessica and
Lauren. My parents, Flora and Julio., as well as all my family and
friends .
You are all the center of my life... thank you for always being there,
for your love and support Willie. I am honored to be your sister and
to be sharing this years Gala dinner with you.

It is with great pride that we attend tonight's festivities honoring our
brother and sister! Willie and Silvia have always set wonderful
examples of the modern Jewish person. They each are active and vital
congregants of Oceanside Jewish Center, respected members of the
community, loving parents and spouses. As Aunt and Uncle to our
children they have always provided unconditional love, laughter and
warm hugs. New Jersey is not too far to attend a play or recital starring
a niece or nephew. As siblings, positive support and an open ear is only
a phone call away! (Guys did you really need to set the bar that high?)
Thank you for all you do and all you mean to our family.

Mazel Tov !
My good friends Silvia and Willie,
You both are most deserving. You both put a lot of love and effort
into serving OJC and our surrounding community. The humble
beginnings of our lives mirror each. We are former classmates dating
back to Junior High School 211 and then Canarsie High School in
Canarsie Brooklyn. (Silvia and I are in the same High School
graduating class, I promise not to tell which year, if you don’t and
Willie, a year later.) There was something in the air there that
seemed to promote success, as Willie and Silvia as well as our
classmates who are also members of OJC, have proven. May you
both have continued success in your lives, lots of love, good health
and happiness, many years to come. May OJC continue to grow under
both, with your continued leadership and hard work.
Your friend
Stuart Talkofsky

Dear Willie and Silvia,
PLEASE COME BACK! We miss you very much and would
love for you to show your goodness and dedication to all
the people of Cuba. Why should only the Jews of
Oceanside benefit from your hard work? Upon your
arrival, I will personally greet you with a good cigar and a
special Guayabera shirt with my picture on the back. I
promise that once you arrive here, you will love it so much
you will never leave! And please bring your parents, Julio
and Flora, back too!
