CAMP JORN YMCA RESIDENT CAMP GUIDE FOR YOUTH DEVELOPMENT FOR HEALTHY LIVING FOR SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY CAMP JORN YMCA Located on Rest Lake in Wisconsin’s northwoods 715 • 543 • 8808 www.campjornymca.org t e o m o c l e W We’re excited! This is our 61st year of providing safe, fun, and exciting northwoods experiences that are steeped in tradition. Our mantra It’s all about the kids! will focus our attention on our mission and the tradition of YMCA resident camping. Every moment with kids is an opportunity to make the world a better place. Camp Jorn YMCA! We develop character by building commitment and understanding to the universal values of Caring, Respect, Honesty, Responsibility and Personal Growth. This is not hard work when you have a great staff, wonderful programs and amazing facilities… and we do! Take notice of all the pictures of smiling kids in this brochure – they are making friends, learning new skills, growing in self-confidence and independence. Picture your kids having these experiences this summer. Be assured we challenge kids to reach new heights and that safety is our highest priority. To ensure you are getting the best for your children – we maintain a 3:1 camper to staff ratio, progressive programing and modern, clean facilities with great food. So much has changed and so much has remained the same… canoe trips, archery classes, favorite horses, the Friendship Fire, singing, making new friends… Camp Jorn YMCA delivers a foundational life changing experience that provides a lifetime of memories and friends. We anxiously await your visit. Look for more information about Camp Jorn YMCA on our website: www.campjornymca.org. Our mission is for all who engage in Camp Jorn YMCA experiences to recognize and develop value in themselves and in the world around them. 2 welcome! We honor the tradition of YMCA resident camping. We seek to expand our offerings to meet the interests of youth with specialty activities, wilderness trips, progressive programming, and teen /leadership opportunities. “Excellent summer experience for my son! Thanks!” Resident Camp Camp Jorn provides high-quality one and two week co-ed sessions for campers ages 8-15. Three-week sessions are for senior campers ages 15-16, wishing to experience our leadership development programs: Leader-in-Training (LIT) and Counselor-in-Training (CIT). Campers are placed into cabins, platform tents, or yurts according to age and gender. Each group, of 6 – 10, is assigned a Counselor and Junior Counselor. During the morning hours, campers participate in three instructional classes, while afternoons are usually reserved for cabin activities. TEVA campers (see information on TEVA program) have more input into the structure of their day, but do participate in many traditional camp activities. Evening Activities are one of the highlights of the day. The entire camp comes together for large-group games and activities such as skit night, campfires, Wells Fargo, sock hop or the Friendship Fire. Because camping trips have unparalleled educational and developmental benefits, we include an overnight camping trip for all campers 10 and up. Campers will learn wilderness trip skills, and will take advantage of CJ’s incredible location in the heart of the Northwoods by canoeing or hiking to a camping spot with their cabin group. These trips impact some class time; however, we truly believe we can make the greatest impact on campers’ lives with this commitment. One- and two-week sessions begin on Sundays and end on Saturdays (please see schedule for details). Campers wishing to stay over from one-week Sessions 1 to 2, or 5 to 6, or 6 to 7, may take advantage of our Saturday night holdover. These campers will do laundry and, weather permitting, participate in an overnight camping trip on or near camp. 1-Week Sessions co-ed Ages 8–14 1 June 15 – June 21 2 June 22 – June 28 5 July 20 – July 26 6 July 27 – Aug 2 7 Aug 3 – Aug 9 2-Week Session co-ed Ages 9–15 A “You’ve got it down. They typically participate in three instructional classes of their choosing most days at camp. Soon after their arrival at camp, each camper takes part in class sign-up, choosing from among the classes available that session. Campers generally choose from the activities/programs listed to the right. (Classes subject to change). Preregistration is required for specialty classes: Horsemanship, Water Skiing, or Air Riflery - as space is limited. Some specialty classes have an additional fee. These classes are completely optional – we just need to know numbers for planning. White Water Rafting is a one-night specialty activity available only during Sessions 1 and 2. Please see table below for more information. Campers may sign up for more than one specialty, for more than one week if desired. Preregistration is required for all specialty classes/activities. 4 activities “Continue what you are doing!! It’s a great program!!” ilding • E -bu ation • duc TEVA e s • A d v entur e Valu TEVA is an exciting way for teen campers to challenge themselves in their CJ experience. TEVA campers live in Camp Jorn’s Yurt Village. The location is set slightly apart from the main camp area, offering living spaces and a meeting space. • Tea m TEVA They spend time at the beginning of their session getting to know one another through group initiatives and low ropes course activities, and will plan their two week session together. This can include traditional camp program areas, as well as special activities such as a wilderness trip, visit to a Native American powwow, trail bike ride, or service activity for Camp or the community. The possibilities are endless! TEVA staff will be counselors who are dedicated to providing the leadership and guidance necessary for this age group, in a caring and fun environment. What’s a Yurt? A yurt is a self-supporting, round, domed shelter used by nomadic tribes across Central Asia. The word “yurt” is used as a synonym for “homeland” in the modern Turkish language. Traditional yurts are constructed of a circular wooden frame with a felt cover. Our yurts have a doorframe, lattice wall-sections, roof poles and a crown. You may think “tent” when you see a yurt. However, yurts are much stronger due to the circular structure combined with a wood frame, and durable fabric cover. TEVA 2-Weeks – Ages 13–14 TEVA-1 Backpack June 15 – June 28 TEVA-2 Canoe July 6 – July 19 TEVA-3 Backpack July 20 – August 2 “Thanks to everyone for making our daughter’s time at CJ a wonderful experience! She loves it :)” programs 5 LITs and CITs spend time in learning sessions covering camper behavior, teaching skills, conflict resolution, and more. LITs and CITs also spend time in intense work in specific program areas with cabin groups, participate in a service learning experience, and sometimes travel to other camps to observe their programs. They will also participate in an extensive wilderness trip, backpacking (Pathfinder) or canoeing (Voyageur), depending upon the session. These trips are 4 – 6 days for LITs, and 5 – 7 days for CITs. They are expected to be well-prepared for their wilderness trip! Please read Leadership Program information for details in the Camper Handbook on LIT and CIT trips. LIT participants are 15 years old or have completed their freshman year of high school. LITs can choose either of the 3–week sessions offered. CIT participants are 16 years old, or have completed their sophomore year of high school, AND must be invited by Camp Jorn to participate in the CIT program. CITs will come to camp for either 3-week session offered. As part of the application process, selected campers will receive a letter of invitation to apply for the CIT program from Camp Jorn. Interested campers will then complete an application and secure written references from non-family members. The application and references are required for participation in the CIT program. 6 YM CA Counselor in Training YM Core Values Honesty: to tell the truth, to act in such a way that you are worthy of trust and to have integrity. K K W Rest Lake Manitowish Waters Red Feather Rd. W. Fawn Lake Rd. Fawn Lake Rest Lake Rd 51 Spider Lake Wisconsin Illinois Little Star Lake 51 Manitowish Lake How do campers get to camp? We charter motor coach buses that stop at locations in Illinois and Wisconsin. See “Transportation To and From Camp” on the Registration Form for details. Parents are also welcome to drop off and pick up their camper(s) at camp. Why 2 prices? We have realized families have differing abilities to pay for summer camp. In order to reach more children, we have instituted a voluntary 2-tier pricing program. This pricing program is voluntary and in no way influences the experience children receive at Camp Jorn YMCA. Because of those volunteering to pay Rate A, we have been able to provide new equipment and programs that allow us to keep up with our goals of providing fun, quality, progressive programs. It also allows us the ability to maintain excellent camper to staff ratios even in a challenging economy. Thanks for considering this avenue of support. 8 faq “Thanks to everyone for making our daughter’s time at CJ a wonderful experience!
