WELCOME TO THE STAGE TEDxNAPERVILLE SPEAKER PACKET Additional speaking and contact information at: tedxnaperville.com/speakers 1 A PLATFORM FOR MANIFESTING ORIGINAL IDEAS AN INTRODUCTION TO TED AND TEDx TED is an annual event that brings together the brightest minds of our generation to share their ideas with a curated audience of open-minded individuals. Based on any number of subjects, these “TED Talks”, are then made available online for free so that their ideas may be spread throughout the world. TEDx was created in the spirit of TED's mission, "ideas worth spreading." The program is designed to give communities, organizations and individuals the opportunity to create TED-like experiences at the local level through their own event. Since the program’s creation, more than 10,000 TEDx events have spread throughout the world in places like Dubai, Tokyo, Antarctica, and, of course, Naperville. AN INTRODUCTION TO TEDxNAPERVILLE Since its inaugural event in 2010, TEDxNaperville has become a major venue for spreading ideas and inspiring change. With nearly a half million online views, our TEDxTalks have helped propel the idea revolution throughout Chicagoland. Speakers have included artists, innovators, musicians, scholars, and brilliant minds from all walks of life, including Olympic gold medalist Meryl Davis, ethical hacker Nicholas Percoco, theoretical astrophysicist Dan Hooper, microbiologist Jack Gilbert, and virality media expert Emerson Spartz. As a volunteer-only organization, no one (not even the speakers) gets paid for their work with TEDxNaperville. What we do offer is a global community and platform for launching unique ideas, which features thousands of previous attendees and hundreds of thousands of online views. Everyone has a life story to tell, but we’re not seeking just a story-teller; we’re seeking truly unique, radical ideas. Our platform is so powerful because it's the idea that takes center stage, regardless of who shares it. As a speaker, your objective is to share your idea in an engaging way and to answer the question, “Why?” Why do you care? Why should the attendees? Why does your idea deserve to be on stage? Why is it radical? If you’re up to the challenge and passionate about your idea, we’d love to hear from you. CURATION & REFINEMENT Our speaker selection committee will review your proposal and respond to you. Please note this may take some time. If selected, we’ll begin working with you to perfect and expand your idea presentation for a TEDx audience. Additional speaking and contact information at: tedxnaperville.com/speakers 6 BEYOND THE AVERAGE SPEAKING EXPERIENCE YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES AS A SPEAKER DEADLINES It is imperative that you meet deadlines, as they are critical to planning the conference. This includes having responsive communication and sending us your bio, talk outline, and slides on-time. Failing to meet deadlines may result in dismissal. WORKING TOGETHER Though you may know your topic the best, we know our attendees and TED’s purpose and only by working together can we best present your idea. Please be aware that egos have little place at TEDxNaperville. ATTENDANCE You’ll be expected to attend dress rehearsals and be present throughout the duration of the conference as attendees will want to further explore your idea after your talk. Please be sure you are available and engaged during the day-long conference. If this or any other criteria is an issue, please let us know. Additional speaking and contact information at: tedxnaperville.com/speakers 7 SHARP, FOCUSED, DIGESTIBLE PRESENTATIONS TALK GUIDELINES & RULES TED presenters might make their talks appear effortless, but there are hours of preparation, practice, slide revision, and memorization involved behind each. To give your idea the presentation it deserves, you must understand the following: • Your talk should be focused and sharp, should go deep rather than broad, and should include visuals that develop your idea. You can even bring in props or unique methods to showcase your ideas. • With exception, no notecards are allowed on stage, though you will be able to see your slides via confidence monitors on the stage. • Talks only run 3-18 minutes. If you exceed your time, a stage manager will ask you to end your talk. • Corporate, political, or religious plugs from the stage are an abuse of the TEDx platform and are unacceptable. Additional speaking and contact information at: tedxnaperville.com/speakers 8 EFFECTIVELY SPREADING YOUR IDEAS 10 GUIDING PRINCIPLES OF AN EFFECTIVE TED TALK 1: DREAM BIG Strive to create the best talk you’ve ever given. Reveal something never said before that the audience will remember forever. Share an idea that could change the world. 6: NO SELLING FROM STAGE Don’t talk about your company or organization. Pitching products and services or looking for funding is strictly prohibited. 2: SHOW US THE REAL YOU Share your passions, your dreams, as well as your fears. Be vulnerable. Speak of failure as well as success. 7: FEEL FREE TO COMMENT... ...on other speakers, to praise or criticize. Controversy energizes and engages. 3: MAKE THE COMPLEX, PLAIN Don’t try to dazzle intellectually. Don’t speak in abstractions. Explain! Give examples. Tell stories. Be specific. 8: DON'T READ YOUR TALK With exception, notes are not allowed on stage. You will underrepresent yourself by reading your talk and not looking at your audience. 4: CONNECT WITH EMOTIONS Make your attendees laugh! Make them cry! 9: DON'T GO OVER YOUR TIME Doing otherwise is to steal time from following speakers. If you exceed your allotted time, the host will ask you to end your talk. 5: DON'T FLAUNT YOUR EGO Don’t boast. It’s the surest way to switch everyone off. 10: REHEARSE YOUR TALK Do so in front of trusted friends for timing, clarity, and impact.
