News from the Director November provides a wonderful atmosphere to reconnect with family and friends while presenting an opportunity to slow down and rejuvenate. Hethwood is ready to help you through the winter with revitalizing activities that will help you find reprieve. Start with this month’s activities (inside) such as a senior citizen luncheon or our fun holiday craft idea with a wine bottle. There are a variety of events to choose from! Many of this year’s capital items have been wrapped up and we are in the process of putting together the budget for 2016. The capital improvements made this year include the addition of a new pergola and corn hole set, new equipment in our fitness center, a complete renovation of the Huntsman wading pool, tree trimming/removal and planting, resurfacing of both the Huntsman and 6700 basketball courts, complete paving of the Hethwood owned and maintained portion of Mt. Vernon Ln., and the complete paving of the Hethwood portion of the Huckleberry Trail. Please join me in sharing a big thank you to the Town of Blacksburg for their generous donation of funds to assist in the paving of the Huckleberry Trail. We are already putting some exciting plans together for 2016, but want your feedback as we prepare for those. Do you have suggestions for improvements, activities or events for the upcoming year? This is YOUR community and I strongly encourage each of you to be participants in the community planning by emailing me as soon as possible!! It is important to the Hethwood Foundation to take into consideration the feedback of residents and we always consider these items when working on policy, rules, projects or capital improvements. We love for our residents to be pro-active, instead of reactive. The best time to provide feedback is as we begin to initiate something, so please join us for our Board meetings, which is where the business of the association is discussed. All Hethwood Foundation Board meetings are held at the Huntsman Clubhouse (2831 Sheffield Drive) and are open to residents. The schedule is posted annually on our website with reminders in the newsletter. While the Board has the authority to go into closed session (which is not open to the public) for specific limited reasons, all Board actions take place in an open meeting. In addition, Board meetings include a public comment period (typically at the beginning of the meeting). During the comment period, residents can share any thoughts or suggestions. Approved Board meeting minutes for the past year can be found on our website. If you are unable to attend a Board meeting, you can always contact your neighborhood representative to share any thoughts you would like discussed or to get a summary of what happened at the most recent meeting. Your neighborhood representative is listed on the left. Some exciting news for those of you interested in the Hethwood pond area; as you know this summer was difficult on our pond. The intense heat and sunshine coupled with low rainfall resulted in low water level during the summer months. This made it very difficult to prevent algae growth. I am excited to tell you that we have begun working with a group of Virginia Tech graduate students that are currently performing various studies on the pond and putting together a plan for us to eliminate the same issue from reoccurring in the spring. We hope to have a solution in place by early spring. The Annual Meeting of the Members was held on October 19th where the election/re-election of directors was held. Three seats (each a term of three years) are vacant annually and this year Donna Gresh (Foxridge representative), Bruce Harper (Pilgrims Pointe representative) and Bill Sanders (Mission Hills representative) each decided to run for re-election and the votes were cast for them to continue serving the Hethwood Community for another 3 years. Each neighborhood has excellent representation by a neighbor who volunteers of their time to ensure that this community remains up to par. The Architectural Control Committee (ACC) is another fine example of the commitment to the Hethwood bylaws and covenants that some of your neighbors are taking part in. This committee reviews all exterior changes/additions to ensure that they comply with the policies established by Hethwood, but they also make certain that these alterations are in keeping with the style of the home and cohesive with the neighborhood. Please take the time to thank your community volunteers for their time and energy; they are a large part of the reason that Hethwood is such a successful and esteemed community in which to reside. As the holidays draw near, don’t forget about our two clubhouses for office luncheons or family dinners. Plan to entertain the whole crew in our spacious clubhouses with fully loaded kitchens and seating for capacity. Just remember, reservations are required and during the holiday months, they go quickly! Happy Thanksgiving from all of the Hethwood Foundation Board Members, Volunteers and Office Team!! Sincerely, Josh Sharitz CMCA, NSPFI, CPSI, AFO Hethwood Director Hethwood Board Meeting The next Hethwood Foundation Board of Directors quarterly meeting will be held on Tuesday, January 19th at noon in the Huntsman Clubhouse. An Application for Architectural Change/Addition must be submitted along with detailed information, samples and measurements as requested on the form, to the Architectural Control Committee, as well as to the Hethwood Foundation for approval. Generally the process moves quickly, but one should allow for a 30-day approval process. Please contact the Hethwood office for this form or print one from the Hethwood web site www.hethwoodfoundation.com. Satellite Dishes The FCC allows for the residents of planned communities to install direct broadcast satellite dishes. Before installing any satellite dish, we request that you complete a Notice of Intent to Install an Antenna. The form as well as information regarding installation size and location can be printed from the Hethwood web site or picked up at the Hethwood office. Once this is filed with the Hethwood Foundation you are free to carry out installation, unless for some reason the size or location does not conform to applicable standards. Important Disclosure Package Information Please note, if you are selling your house/condo/townhouse you (the seller) are required to furnish the buyer with a disclosure package. The disclosure package includes important information regarding the Hethwood by-laws, exterior home and yard inspection, architectural standards, dues requirements, and other important information. Realtors know this and often request one on your behalf. Some realtors may not. It is the seller’s responsibility. If you are selling your home, please remember to request a disclosure package in writing from the Hethwood Foundation. You may go to www.hethwoodfoundation.com and use the interactive form or print off a form. Please note that an exterior home and yard inspection will be completed as required. Any violations noted must be reported in the disclosure information, and a letter will be sent to you as well. Any violations will need to be remedied in an appropriate time frame. Haymarket Square owners must obtain a disclosure package from both the Hethwood Foundation (552-5252) $50 and Raines Property Management 951-0000 (cost $50). Likewise, Chowning Place owners must obtain a disclosure package from both the Hethwood Foundation (552-5252) $50 and Townside Inc. (552-4000) electronic $225 and paper $250. A purchaser may cancel the contract if timely delivery of the association disclosure package is not completed. Clubhouse Rentals We have two great clubhouses available for Hethwood homeowners and residents of Foxridge to rent. The cost for rental is $50 and the deposit is $300. Consider the Briarwood Clubhouse for your special event. It is easy to clean, the furniture can be moved around for dancing, and it is equipped with a range, refrigerator, dishwasher, and microwave for your convenience. The Huntsman Clubhouse is reserved for non-alcoholic events such as meetings, classes, showers etc. It has a full kitchen and is available for daytime use during office hours. The clubhouses are great for hosting larger groups that may not fit in your home comfortably. This is a privilege for our residents and it is hoped that any rentals will be treated that way. Residents are responsible for returning the clubhouses to their original condition with furniture in place, cleaned completed (residents are to provide own cleaning supplies) and trash removed to a dumpster. The clubhouse(s) should be left properly secured, with key turned in immediately after the contracted time and clubhouse ready for the next inspection and rental.
