LIPIZZANERHEIMAT
Home of the
Lipizzaner horses
Welcome to the Lipizzanerheimat
There is always something new to
discover in the home of the Lipizzaner horses. The Lipizzanerheimat offers beautiful destinations
- unique, adventurous and unforgettable.
You can find gems of culture in every
corner of the home of the Lipizzaner.
Artists from around the world have left
their mark in the region. Friedensreich
Hundertwasser designed the St. Barbara church and Professor Ernst Fuchs the
Moses fountain both in Bärnbach. The
town hall in Voitsberg bears the unmistakable hallmark of Arik Brauer.
Who hasn’t heard of the Lipizzaner of
the Spanish Riding School in Vienna?
These noble horses have their nursery
and training in Piber. This historically significant place full of magic presents itself
nestled in a fascinating hilly landscape.
2
Annual special exhibitions at the Stözle
Glass Centre in Bärnbach give an insight
into the fascinating centre. There is a lot
along unusual themes at the local museums; tools, old model machines, Styrian castles, Turkish parson’s nose and
mushroom soups and culinary items of
the last century.
Immerse yourself, relax and feel good
and let your soul smile in the health hub
of spa Therme NOVA in Köflach. Open
the door to another world; your very
own feel-good world. The Therme NOVA
Köflach offers everything that you need
for a wonderful spa day and more.

Lipizzaner Stud Farm Piber
With a guided tour around the stud farm you
will learn interesting details about the day to
day running of the stud farm and the keeping
of the noble horses from horse experts. You
can prove yourself as a great team driver
in the carriage simulator and look over the
shoulder of the blacksmith as he goes about
his work in the show smithy.
In the historical riding hall you will get a glimpse of the daily work of the riding and carriage departments. You can experience the Lipizzaner horses in action at the many events
in the arena with visitors’ grandstand with
1500 seats.
Lipizzaner summer meadows
The Lipizzaner stud farm in Piber
is the nursery for the world famous horses from the Spanish riding school in Vienna.
In 1920 after the First World War in Austria the
remaining prized herds of Lipizzaner horses
were transferred to the imperial stud farm in
Piber. The breeding of Lipizzaner builds on
previous practice of the former imperial stud
farm Lipica and still follows the old methods
of breeding.
The ‘mothers’ stud farm‘ houses around 75
mother mares, horses in training and used
for presentation and events at the stud farm,
stallions from the Spanish riding school and
those stallions and mares who due to age
are enjoying their well-deserved retirement.
The herd of Lipizzaner in Piber is divided into
the six classic breeds of stallions: Maestoso,
Pluto, Favory, Neapolitano, Conversano and
Siglavy as well as all of the fifteens breeds of
mares still available, making us unique in the
world!
The baroque castle was built between 1696
and 1716 by Benedictine monks as
a type of priory. The unique acoustics in the
arcade three storey courtyard make weddings and concerts a special experience. On
the top floor next to the administration there
are also rooms which can be hired for events.
Annually more than 30 Lipizzaner foals first
see the light of day

LIPIZZANER STUD FARM
The one to three year old young animals
spend the summer months on mountain pastures 1,500m above sea level; the mares on
the Prentlalm and the stallions on the Stubalm. This time on the mountain pastures is
an important part of breeding of the Lipizzaner horses. Due to the partly steep and stony
hillside of the pastures the horses gain the
necessary surefootedness and train their sinews and joints.
To the Lipizzaner summer
meadows!
Package bookable from June until mid September:
Guided tour with an insight into the daily life
of the stud farm. Followed by a trip by private coach to see the young mares at Stubalm
(about 15km away).
There you will be met by a horse expert and
you will experience the breeding and grazing
of the young horses up close. Length including travelling time to the mountains is approximately 2½ hrs.

Feel your soul smile in the health
hub which is Therme NOVA Köflach.

a unique experience.
In the ‘rainforest’ you can see bananas growing among exotic plants. More than 1000m²

St. Barbara´s Church
by Friedensreich Hundertwasser
One of the biggest attractions of Lipizzanerheimat is St. Barbara’s
church in Bärnbach, a colourful, jolly and positive place of worship.
The church was built in the fifties and between the years 1987/88 was
redesigned by FriedensreichHundertwasser into a piece of art which
has been famous ever since. The tower, the roof, the facades, the golden ‘bulb‘ and the golden balls are varied and are rich in shape and colour. With the designing of the twelve towers, which represent all of
the world religions and carry the respective symbols, Hundertwasser
made a gesture of ecumenism and of dialogue of all confession and
tolerance. The inside of the church is ideal for silence and praying and
shows works of the local artists. The highlight of the interior of the
church is without a doubt the ‘ray of light‘-cross.
GlasMuseum - Stölzle
Whether in the high-tech domain, in the household or as a piece of art,
we could not imagine our lives without glass. In the Stölzle Oberglas
Center glass museum you can admire interesting and rare things to
do with glass. Among these the replica ‘Waldglas’ (green glass from
the Middle Ages) furnace and tools from when glassmaking started in
West Styria. An annual special exhibition about glass also takes place
here.
Something quite special awaits you in the mouth blowing works. As
part of a guided tour you experience up close how glass is blown. Following this, the glass shop tempts you with many offers.

The Moses Fontain
by Prof. Ernst Fuchs
The Moses Fountain designed by Professor Ernst Fuchs is a special
work of art and alongside the Hundertwasser church it is another attraction in Lipizzanerheimat. The Moses Fountain is also a biblical art
work and supplemental to the Hundertwasser church.
The fountain features about 144,000
420,000 pebbles. The unique fountain
the bronzed coated Moses statue and

Voitsberg Town-hall
by Arik Brauer
Around 120m² of hand-painted tiles, which portray proverbs, were
placed in mosaic form on the external walls of Voitsberg town-hallby
the artist Professor ArikBrauer. In the top of the main facade you find
the chimes with six porcelain figurines, which represent love, equality,
conservation, bravery, peace and intelligence.
Voitsberg town-hall was built in the sixties of the 18th century. In 2002
ArikBrauer designed the facade with mottos in pictures and in 2003
the town-hall got its chimes. In the stairwell and in the corridors a
‘constant gallery’ can be seen with work by local artists.

ART
M.Lankowitz’s Pilgrimage Church
Art centre
Köflach
With an exhibition space of almost 400m² the
art centre provides good conditions for exhibitions in the visual arts field. “High-quality
art can be at home not only in cities but also
in the so-called ‘province’ “. This is the philosophy, which is embedded in the work exhibited in this centre.
The church with a baroque style high altar, miraculous Madonna treasury and Antonius chapel
is the jewel of this pilgrimage destination in the Lipizzanerheimat. Maria Lankowitz is widely
known for rogation processions and pilgrimages. The most famous pilgrimage on foot is one
for shelter, where people have been making the pilgrimage over the Stubalpe to Maria Lankowitz annually since 1690. The history of the church: In the parish church of Warth, Turks stole
all of the church treasures in 1426, including the miraculous Madonna picture of the Mother of
God, which had always been adored. The thieves threw the naked statue into a bush, where
she lay for seven years undetected. In 1433 as a shepherd looked for his oxen which had ran off,
he found them kneeling in front of the bush in which the forgotten statue of the Virgin Mary
lay. After many failed attempts to take the statue back to Warth, the priest advised they should
put the statue into the oxen cart and to let the animals take it wherever they wanted. Without
taking any feed they went along a path for days on end which finally led to Maria Lankowitz.
In the current church yard, where even then a large lime tree stood, the animals stood still and
couldn’t be moved on any further. In this was the proof that the Mother of God had chosen her
home herself. 1433 is therefore considered the founding year of the pilgrimage church of Maria
Lankowitz.
The art centre in Köflach is represented by
four exhibition rooms, a library, a cafe with
terrace and a museum shop. Moreover it is a
lively place for the conflicts between art and
all of its guises. Music, literature and also cabaret belong to the fixed events in the annual
calendar.
Two main exhibitions per year give an insight
into creative work of the 20th and early 21st
centuries. The main emphasis is on Austrian
art since 1945.
Way of St. James – Pilgrimage
The Way of St. James in Styria goes through Maria Lankowitz. Since 2009 it has been a member of the central
European pilgrimage destinations. A path which brings
people together – you come as a pilgrim and leave as
a friend. The path through Western Styria mostly goes
along traditional pilgrimage and hiking paths and is paved with the beauty of nature, cultural jewels and many
unknown treasures. Whit this in mind ‘Good walk’ or as
the Styrians say ‘An guaten Weg’.

Upper Voitsberg
Castle Ruins
You can explore a footpath from the castle
hill along to the castle ruins, which runs from
the foot of the hill along sections of the old
castle walls, grape vines, greenery and resting spots. From there you can enjoy a splendid view of the town of Voitsberg and the
surrounding area. The open air stage on several plateaus of the ruins is an ideal setting
for many cultural activities. A roof was put on
part of it in 2003, creating a unique event location with a gorgeous backdrop. Every year
in summer traditional open air theatres take
place. Next to the castle ruins of Upper Voitsberg there is the newly renovated castle tavern. Here you can spoil yourself with classic
dishes and special menus.
