St. Louise de Marillac Church
St. Louise de Marillac Church Serving God’s people in Covina, Glendora, San Dimas and surrounding communities. Jesus said simply, “Go and do likewise.” Fr. Robert P. Fulton Pastor Fr. Joseph McShane Associate Pastor Peter Brause Deacon Alan Holderness Deacon Omar Uriarte Deacon Al Valles Deacon Mass Schedule Monday –Friday 6:20 am & 8:00 am Saturday 8:00 am & 5:30 pm Vigil Sunday 6:30 am, 8:00 am, 9:30 am, 11:00 am, 12:30 pm, & 5:00 pm Parish Office 626.915.7873 Visit us: 1720 E. Covina Blvd. Covina, CA 91724 www.stlouisedm.org St. Louise de Marillac is a Roman Catholic community called together as family to worship, to minister, and to evangelize. As true disciples of Jesus Christ, we are called to renew His love and spirit by sharing our time, talent and treasure. St. Louise de Marillac Mission Statement PASTOR’S CORNER Page 2 The Sacrament of Holy Orders – We Need Priests! The first sacrament all of us receive is Bap sm. Along with Eucharist and Confirma on these three Sacraments fully ini ate us into the Chris an Community and unite all of us as Disciples of Christ. There are two other Sacraments which correspond to a unique voca on; that of Marriage and Holy Orders. These two cons tute two great ways through which a Chris an can make his life a gi of love, in imita on and in the name of Christ. Holy Orders is the Sacrament, given by the Lord Jesus to the Apostles, that answers the command to Peter Simon to feed his flock, through the power of the Holy Spirit; to feed Jesus’ flock with the heart of Jesus, which is a heart of love. The priest must feed the Lord’s flock with love. If he does not do it with love, it is useless. Pope Francis says, “Those who are ordained are placed at the head of the community as servants, as Jesus did and taught.” What must one do to become a priest? This is an ini a ve that the Lord takes. The Lord calls. Perhaps there are some young men here who have felt this call in their heart, the wish to become a priest, the wish to serve others in the things that come from God, the wish to spend their whole life in service to catechize, bap ze, forgive, celebrate the Eucharist, and take care of the sick. If any of you have felt this calling in his heart, it is Jesus who has put it there. Take care of this invita on and pray that it will grow and bear fruit in and for the whole Church. Speak to a priest or deacon about this call… Voca ons to religious life have been in a decline for the past 50 Perhaps there are here some years; but according to research done by the Center for Applied Research in the Apostolate (CARA), many Catholic millennials young men who have felt (Americans born a er 1981) at least think about entering religious this call in their heart, the life. This is good news for the future of the priesthood! In a survey of non-married Catholics over the age of 14, researchers at CARA wish to become a priest, the found that 12 percent of men and 10 percent of women wish to serve others… respondents thought about becoming a priest, nun, or religious brother or sister "at least a li le seriously." Millennials were also more likely to have considered joining religious life than people born between 1961 and 1981, who researchers called the "post Va can II" genera on. 22-year-old Ryan Muldoon, who recently entered the seminary for the Archdiocese of New York, explained his choice in terms of discernment, a reflec ve process for understanding one's voca on, or purpose. "This isn't really a decision that anybody makes of their own voli on. This really does stem from a deeper calling -- a call by God and a response by an individual," he said. (The Atlan c, Aug. 16, 2013) So let us all, here at St. Louise de Marillac, pray for voca ons to the priesthood and religious life. Father Robert Fulton ADULT FELLOWSHIP GROUPS Page 3 DINE OUT! ADMINISTRATION Page 6 ADVERTISER HIGHLIGHT We’d like to extend a special thank you to the individuals and local businesses who adver se in our bulle n each week. It is because of their support that we are able to provide a bulle n for our parishioners each week. The business highlighted this week is Custer Chris ansen Mortuary. They have served the Covina community since 1893 when they were founded by W.Q. Custer (a descendant of General George Armstrong Custer) and Gene Chris ansen. W.Q. was the proprietor of a furniture business in Covina. It was common prac ce in those days for furniture business owners to serve in the mortuary trade. Custer and Gene Chris ansen (who owned Oakdale Mortuary), formed a partnership, and Custer became the owner of Oakdale. So it was that Custer Chris ansen Mortuary was formed. Located in the historic downtown Covina area, its building displays an old-world charm. From the tall white columns in front to the green-shu ered windows and lantern-lit wrap-around porch, Custer Chris ansen’s colonial building transports you to a different me in history. Underage alcohol use could lead to larger problems The negative consequences of underage drinking are more widespread and serious than previously known. Research shows that alcohol can change the way the brain works and could lead to long-term consequences. Many more dangers of underage drinking are immediate, including alcohol poisoning, physical assault and poor decision making. You can help protect your children from the risks associated with drinking by maintaining open communication, and by expressing a clear, consistent message that underage drinking is unacceptable.
