Relay for Life - Maury Regional Medical Center
Maury Regional Hospital
Columbia, Tennessee
June 2005
Vol. XXXIV, Issue 6
Relay for Life
The 2005 American Cancer
Society Relay for Life was conducted
on June 3-4 at the Columbia Academy
football field. A fun-filled overnight
event — a celebration of life — this
annual event honors those who are
cancer survivors, remembers those
who have died of cancer and raises
funds for continuing research.
This year, MRH raised a
whopping $13,142.19, over $3,000
more than our target, which earned
us the Corporate Top Fundraising
Award. A silent auction of items
donated by groups throughout the
hospital was conducted. Luminaries
and balloons were sold for use in the
ceremony in honor of loved ones. The
total raised for the event was
$36,654.64.
Bill Walter, CEO for the Maury
Regional Healthcare System, was this
year’s honorary chairperson and
Cindy Fox, Director of Marketing &
Maury Regional Hospital was the top fundraising team for Relay for Life with numerous employees
attending the walk on June 3.
Public Relations, was the sponsorship
chair. Carolyn Harrison and Rhonda
Doerflinger in the Human Resources
Department coordinated the hospital
team and activities. Over 35
employees participated on the
committee to coordinate walkers
hospital-wide.

for Life or programs of the American

PACS Implementation Provides Electronic Imaging
Maury Regional Hospital is
making a technology upgrade that
brings improved care and greater
convenience to patients in south
central Tennessee. The Picture
Archival Communications System
(PACS) will be used for CT, MRI,
Ultrasound, Nuclear Medicine and
diagnostic (CR) images that
previously were printed on film.
Physicians and employees will now
have access to these critical
diagnostic tools via computer in
many physician offices and homes
and at workstations located in
Radiology areas, the Emergency
Department, Surgery, and the
Intensive Care Unit.
“By eliminating the need for film,
we will be able to expedite radiology
images for physicians and employees
caring for patients,” said Director of
Radiology Pam Williams. “Images will
be sent electronically to a
workstation where a radiologist will
review them. The images will then be
available to physicians and staff.
Reports will be available for
1
physicians in a preliminary status
after transcription.”
Training dates have been
established for radiologists and
radiology employees, July 25-29.
Staff physicians will be trained to
access PACS through physician
portal by Information Systems
Department training staff. Training
for physician portal will begin
August 8. Radiology employees will
train nursing staff and ancillary
department staff August 1–15.

Strain Appointed Director of
Managed Care
Kristy Strain has been appointed the director of
managed care. She will be responsible for negotiating and
overseeing the managed care contracts. She will also
develop an overall strategy for the system.
“Managed care contracting is an essential element in
the continued success and growth of our hospital. Having
an extremely qualified individual to lead and direct the
managed care strategies is critical. Maury Regional Hospital
is excited to have Kristy Strain as our director of managed
care and join our team. Kristy brings over ten years of
experience in managed care contracting,” said Larry Moore, chief financial
officer.
Strain has worked with managed care for 13 years, most recently at
Ardent Health Services in Nashville where she was the manager of managed
care. There, she negotiated the managed care contracts with 19 different
facilities. “It’s nice now to focus on one hospital system rather than trying to
do so much for so many,” said Strain.
Strain received her bachelor’s degree in public administration/business
management from Belmont University and her master’s in healthcare
administration from Hamilton University.
Wells Appointed Breast Center
Coordinator
Debra Wells has been appointed the Breast Center
Coordinator responsible for coordinating follow-up
care for patients with abnormal diagnostic
mammograms and ultrasounds as well as coordinate
care with referring physicians, support patients with
literature and serve as the liaison with the breast cancer
support group.
Wells has been a nurse practitioner for over 15
years. She received her master’s degree in nursing from
Vanderbilt University. She has worked in a variety of
settings, mostly in primary and urgent care.
“We’re very happy to have somebody with her qualifications and
credentials,” said Mickie DeHaven, director of women’s services.
Wells is working on her certification as a Breast Health Navigator so she
will be better able to support patients in their decisions about treatment
options, help mates deal with breast cancer and promote the services
throughout the community.
“This will be a little different from my role at Northside and the ACC.
There, I ordered mammograms and managed the abnormal findings. Here,
I’ll be working with the radiologist in a different setting where a whole new
set of laws apply,” said Wells.

PACS Implementation
PACS is one of the first steps toward electronic medical records at
Maury Regional Hospital. In the future, all medical information and images
that doctors need to provide patients with care will be available electronically.
The time and cost savings will be tremendous. Caregivers who need patient
medical information will get it more quickly, expediting a diagnosis and
evaluation of treatment options.

Thank You
To Patrick Harlan:
Thank you so much for participating in Career
Odyssey on Friday, May 20th. Your presence
made a difference for over 1,200 8th grade
students of Maury County as they begin to
consider their course through high school,
college or vocational training, and on into the
workforce. We appreciate the professionalism
and enthusiasm you shared with these young
people. With your personal level of introduction
to your career, you really made your work
“come to life”. As these eighth graders begin to
map out their studies for the future, they’ll recall
what they learned on this day, and use it to guide
their choices. Once again, thank you for helping
to shape the future for the young people of
Maury County.
Pat King, Maury Alliance
Dear Mr. Otwell:
Maury Regional Hospital and UCAR Carbon
conducted our eighth annual Health Fair on
Tuesday, May 3, 2005. This event has become a
tradition with our UCAR employees and they
look forward to it each year. I know you are
relatively new to Maury Regional and I welcome
you to our community. I also want to let you
know what a valuable asset Patrick Harlan is to
your group and the staff that he brings [Amy
Bridges, Thomas Cobb, Glenda Davis, Mindy
Girouard, Rick Harris, Rita Hillis, Carrie
VanHook & Valerie Yeiser] with him to UCAR
each year. They are friendly, accommodating,
knowledgeable, and above all true
professionals. Thanks so much for allowing us
to continue this event for eight years. We are
already making plans for next year and would
like to invite you to visit us and see first-hand
how your employees interact with ours to make
this event a huge success each year.
Reba Crowell, RN, BSN, COHN-S
