Summer 2014 - Kemp Hospice
Spring/Summer Newsletter 2014 Hospice at Home Appeal The demand for our Hospice at Home service increases each year, with us providing over 400 night shifts last year alone. To continue providing this much needed service and to increase the number of shifts we can offer – we need your support to help raise £30,000 in 30 weeks. KEMP Hospice, 41 Mason Road, Kidderminster, DY11 6AG 01562 756000 | kemphospice.org.uk | kemphospice Registered Charity Number 1146310 CEO UPDATE A new year and much excitement here at KEMP. By the time you receive this we will have completed the Garden Project and our new therapy room, much larger sanctuary space, the large multi-function space for our patients and others, along with a dedicated space for children and young people, will all be in use. An example of what these new spaces will mean for our patients and others is the multifunction room, which will enable us to provide themed ‘Days Out’. For example, without all the problems of travel, we can all get dressed in our finery (hats for the ladies) and go off to Ascot for Ladies Day by beaming live coverage of the event into the new room onto a large flatscreen TV. The patients then have a virtual flutter and enjoy one of Richard’s (our Chef) excellent lunches in comfort and with care close by. We have also opened our latest retail outlet in Coventry Street, Kidderminster and if you have not yet been, do pay a visit, it is our largest ever store with something for everyone. Watch this space for the next exciting development at KEMP! HOSPICE AT HOME APPEAL Can you help us raise £30,000 in 30 weeks for our Hospice at Home service? Since launching this much needed service in 2010 the demand has grown every year, with last year alone seeing us provide over 400 night shifts to patients who are in the last few weeks of life. Hospice at Home care enables patients to choose if they would like to stay at home, rather than going into hospital and allows carers the time to rest knowing their loved one is being cared for through the night. We provide sensitive and individual care including nursing, emotional and personal care, normally between the hours of 10pm – 7am. All of this support is provided free of charge to the patient and their families and we now need you to support us. You can make a difference to someone in our community by asking friends and family to support us, asking local groups or businesses to raise funds for us or by making a personal donation. Please let us know if you can help by completing the tear-off slip or alternatively visit our website at www.kemphospice.org.uk One family said “We couldn’t have coped with looking after him without your help and care. Thank you”. In the Day Hospice.. For many years 4th year Medical Students from Birmingham University have been coming to KEMP for a one day placement. This is part of their oncology module and for most of them it is their first experience of a hospice. We take only one student a day to ensure that patients are not overwhelmed and that the student has time and attention from staff. The patients enjoy having a young person around and most are very willing to share their experiences and talk about their personal situations. Students have the opportunity to see a multidisciplinary team in action outside a hospital setting. They join the clinical briefing in a morning and then meet the patients as they arrive. During the day they participate in the activities that take place in the Day Hospice. They will observe a complementary therapy session and may even be invited to receive a short therapy themselves. They might take part in an exercise class, relaxation session or in reminiscence or horticultural therapy. If there are specific clinical procedures taking place they will be able to observe these and at times help with them and possibly participate in specialist Respiratory, Parkinson’s Disease or Cardiology clinics. They enjoy lunch with patients, after which they make a home visit with a Community Palliative Care Nurse Specialist or spend time with Dr Curtis, our Palliative Care Consultant. We all enjoy their visits and it is also a financial help to the hospice as the University makes a payment for each student that attends. Students are all asked to complete an evaluation form at the end of the day and the most frequent comments are about their surprise at the happy atmosphere of the hospice, the range of activities that take place, the broad spectrum of illnesses encountered and the quality of the food. “It is a very social and uplifting place, which surprised me.” “Lots of patient interaction and humour.” “Different to ward facilities, welcoming, open, upbeat and happy.” We have only just returned from our second residential weekend for 24 children and young people, 9 parents and supported by 24 volunteers. Everyone had a great time and got involved in a wide range of outdoor activities including the Zip Wire, Climbing Wall and Abseiling along with the Cave Maze and the inflatable Assault Course. This helped to begin rebuilding confidence, self-esteem and make new friends within the group. The children also benefited from therapeutic work including sharing their stories and feelings, helping them to feel less isolated and normalising their experiences of grief, as well as some memory work enabling them to revisit memories in a safe and supported environment. New build progress By the time you receive this newsletter we will have finished building this ambitious annexe and will be enjoying our lovely new rooms. We will be holding a plant sale at the hospice on Saturday 17th May between 10.00am and 12.00 noon and you are more than welcome to pop along to the hospice and see how this much needed space is being used. We are very proud of our new facilities and we hope you will like it too. Trustees at KEMP The Board of Trustees at KEMP is responsible and accountable to the Charities Commission and the community for the governance of the hospice and its funds. By virtue of KEMP’s status as a company limited by guarantee, Board members are also Directors and are legally accountable under the Companies Act 2006. The Board comprises a team of volunteers, some with specialist professional skills, who set the strategy for the hospice; provide leadership and support the Chief Executive and senior staff thus enabling KEMP to achieve our charitable aims. The Board members also monitor the performance of KEMP ensuring that we make the most of our resources and comply fully with the legal requirements placed upon them. In this issue we would like to feature a Trustee, Ron Whitfield, who has, after almost 5 years with us decided to stand down as Chairman of Trustees and from his role at KEMP. During his time at KEMP Ron has been involved in the development of the charity, the recruitment of the Chief Executive, the change in our legal status and with his colleagues on the Board, aided the development of a number of new services within KEMP such as our Children’s Bereavement team. Chair of Trustees, Ron has worked with staff on major projects such as our new annexe in the garden and the production of a Strategic Plan to guide the charity through the next five years. Ron says, “It has been a great privilege to be a Trustee at KEMP and even more so its Chairman for the last two years. I would like to thank my fellow Trustees/Directors and also the staff for their hard work and support during this time.” We would like to thank Ron for all that he has brought to the charity and we wish him well for the future and look forward to seeing him at future events. T H A N K S Thank you to all those who have supported us over the past few months, without your kind support we wouldn’t be able to maintain and grow the services we offer to people in the local community.
