NZASI Newsletter JULY 2016 - Australasian Society for Immunology
NZ ASI Newsletter July 2016 Introduction If you would like to include anything in this newsletter, please contact me: Ros Kemp - [email protected] Visiting Speaker Programme Research Profile – Ed Taylor I am a PhD student in the Kemp laboratory and I have recently passed the oral exam for my PhD. My project was on analysing the T cell infiltrate in human colorectal cancer (CRC) tumours. Quantification of the T cell infiltrate in CRC has been shown to be more accurate at predicting patient outcome than standard methods such as disease staging. I used multi-colour flow cytometry to perform in-depth analysis of the T cell infiltrate in CRC patients both functionally and phenotypically. My study revealed the unique immune environment of CRC tumours and showed that classic immunology dogma does not always hold true. My favourite part about my PhD was all the awesome and crazy people I got to meet and become friends with. Upcoming Speakers Ben Seddon, UCL, UK Dunedin: August 4-5 Contact Ros Kemp for details: [email protected] Hiroshi Kiyono, University of Tokyo, Japan Hamilton: November Contact Julie Cakebread for details: [email protected] NZASI funds are available for ALL members to travel to meet with speakers and attend seminars PhD Position - AKL A Ph.D. project supported by The Royal Society of New Zealand Marsden Fund is available in 2016 under the supervision of Associate Professor Nigel Birch and Professor Rod Dunbar to investigate the role of proteases in human T cell migration and activation.
