This was our first time holding such a meeting, and to say it was successful and beneficial is an understatement. It gave us the opportunity to accomplish so much. We got the majority of our calendar for the year populated; came up with some ideas for member retention; and did a lot of planning and organizing for Mustang Memories 2012. Mustang Memories discussions included, classifications, judging, membership, new layout for registration and swap areas; practice sessions for parking and judging throughout the year; pictures and video ideas; new committees to be added. We also had input and assistance from the Mid Michigan Mustang Club (Special Guests). We discussed the possibilities IF we were awarded the 50th Anniversary show, how we would budget, and ensure a successful show. We are also trying to put together some new ideas to give all of our members some very cool events to attend again this year, and some that will ONLY be available if you are a member. So stay tuned for more on those ideas in the coming months. This also gave us time for some breakout groups for training of new board members, Bill sat down with Kathy and explained and showed her all the steps in running the membership area, as did Kathy with Dawn Davis about the secretary position, and Craig with Gary regarding the editor position. Also at this time April and Melissa Palmquist got to plan and make some calls securing some future events for the calendar. We went from 10am until almost 7:30pm. It was a very long day, but well worth it, as it was the most productive meeting I have ever been involved in and every single person in attendance contributed. It was great to see everyone having so much input, and sharing their ideas. I am looking very forward to yet another amazing year in 2012 for MOCSEM! See everyone soon! About the Club The Mustang Owners Club of Southeastern Michigan (MOCSEM) was founded in November 1975 by a group of individuals with the desire to protect and preserve the Ford Mustang as one of the most attractive and fun filled cars ever made. We are enthusiasts of all ages with a love affair with the many generations of America’s Premiere Pony Car. Whether it’s a coupe, convertible or fastback from 1964½ to the 2012 GT or the 2004 Cobra, we love them all. The mission of club members is to collect, restore and preserve the history of the Mustang along with the stories of the people and the roles that they played in making this one of the great cars of the 20th Century. Although ownership is not a requirement for membership, your enthusiasm, expertise and and/or love of the automobile are most welcome. Many of our club members own one or more Mustangs in varying body styles, models and years. Club members are always exchanging information, providing sources for parts, literature and helpful hints for restoring or maintaining their Mustangs. Our members are a diverse group of individuals, located throughout Southeastern Michigan and all share a great appreciation for the Ford Mustang. Our general membership meetings are held on the second Tuesday of each month. Our monthly newsletter, The Accelerator, provides the members with reports on club activities, technical information, advertisements and business service locations and more. Some club activities include car shows, picnics, sporting events, cruise nights and technical sessions. General Meetings General membership meetings are held the second Tuesday of each month at 7:30 pm at: Joy Manor 28999 Joy Road Westland, MI 48185 734.525.0960 A buffet dinner is served a 6:30 pm for $11 per person so come early and socialize over dinner. Mustang Owners Club of Southeastern Michigan • PO Box 39088, Redford, MI 48239 • www.mocsem.com Page 6 The Accelerator This is the One By David Mirling MOCSEM Member Photos by Gary Brewer I had previously owned a 1999 Mustang GT and I was on the hunt for another one. I looked at a few, but when I found this one, I knew I had to get it. It was purchased from a Ford engineer who took great care of the car, leaving it all original. I got the car in July 2008, three weeks before Mustang Memories at Greenmead. I cleaned the car and entered the show. Winning was the last thing on my mind, I just wanted to be a part of the fun with the other Mustang enthusiasts. To my surprise, my new car was a class winner. I have also been a class winner in 2010 in the stock original class. This is a great club to be involved in with very nice people and great events. By Ford Media That expensive, time-consuming step can be skipped by starting with the new ’67 convertible body. “Some minor panel adjustment and alignment still has to be done, but the body comes rust proofed and primed and is otherwise ready for painting and assembly,” said Mondrach. More information about the ’67 body shell and all other Fordlicensed restoration parts can be found at www.fordrestorationparts.com. Restorers can now build a “new” 1967 Mustang convertible with an all-new steel body The ’67 Mustang convertible body is stronger than the original and can be outfitted with Ford’s big-block engines With nearly 8.5 million built since first debuting in 1964, the Ford Mustang is America’s longest selling four-seat sports car DEARBORN, Mich., Dec. 20, 2011 – The latest addition to the growing stable of classic Mustang bodies – the 1967 convertible – just might be the ultimate stocking stuffer this Christmas for restorers of America’s favorite sports car. The 1967 convertible body shell, the newest officially licensed Ford Restoration part, is now available to order starting at $15,995. It is the fourth reproduction classic Mustang body available to restorers, joining the ’65 convertible, the ’67 fastback and the ’69 fastback. To qualify as an official Ford-licensed restoration part, the ’67 body shell has to meet or exceed the fit, finish and quality of the original, said Dennis Mondrach, Ford Restoration Parts licensing manager. “The new ’67 convertible body shell gives restorers a super-solid foundation on which to build their dream pony car.” Dynacorn International, manufacturer of the ’67 convertible body, worked to not only replicate the original ’67 convertible, but make it better. The body panels, for example, are stamped from modern automotive-grade virgin steel that is slightly thicker than the original, according to Jim Christina, Dynacorn general manager. Then, to further add strength, the panels are assembled using modern welding techniques. There are also newly engineered reinforcements in known stress areas to add strength and rigidity to the body, added Christina. “These days, the chances are fairly slim of finding a restorable, rust-free ’67 Mustang that has never been wrecked,” said Mondrach. “As the value of classic Mustangs has increased over the years, garages, barns and scrap yards have been picked clean.” ’67 Mustang: More luxury, more power, more style After a record-setting production run that saw more than a million Mustangs gallop out of Ford factory gates in just 18 months, the 1967 model was given a major redesign. The move helped keep Mustang ahead of the pack as new competitors from General Motors and Chrysler along with imported sports cars from Great Britain claimed a larger share of the mid-1960s youth market. No part of the Mustang was overlooked in 1967. The body was widened, the hood lengthened, and the engine bay grew in size to accommodate an array of six engines ranging from a thrifty and peppy 200-cubic-inch inline six-cylinder all the way up to a thundering 390-horsepower 427 that came in the Shelby GT500. This helped launch an entirely new generation of big-block high-horsepower pony cars that fueled the growing muscle car mania. The ’67 also got all-new sheet metal, a redesigned grille, new taillights and a nifty option that put turn signals in the hood scoops. On the inside, the more luxurious interior took the Mustang in a new direction. Buyers could opt for a tilt-away steering wheel, a gauge package with a built-in tachometer, brushed aluminum trim on the dash, door panels and shifter console. There was also a roof console with map lights between the sun visors, and the ’67 was the first Mustang with built-in air conditioning that was packaged behind the dash, not under it. Because more than 90 percent of the parts needed to restore a 1967 Mustang convertible are available new as Ford-licensed reproduction components, the ’67 convertible body can be built to just about any specification that was available when the car was new. Ford’s big-block engines from that era, including the 390, 427 and 428-cubic-inch motors, bolt right in with no modifications necessary. Also, the ’67 body can be used as a basis to build a replica of the Shelby GT350 or GT500 convertibles. “The ’67 convertible body is supported by thousands of high-quality Ford-licensed restoration parts,” Mondrach said. “So, though it may be possible to build a 1967 Mustang using almost all new parts, we think most customers who buy the ’67 convertible shell will use it for high-performance applications, resto-mod projects or for show cars.” Mustang Owners Club of Southeastern Michigan • PO Box 39088, Redford, MI 48239 • www.mocsem.com Page 8 The Accelerator Photos by Gary Brewer Mustang Owners Club of Southeastern Michigan • PO Box 39088, Redford, MI 48239 • www.mocsem.com The Accelerator Page 9 A Visit to Mount Dora Museum of Speed By Gary Brewer MOCSEM Editor Photos by Gary Brewer While my family and I were on vacation in Orlando, Florida, my wife Peggy, who is an artist, was looking for a small arts community to visit. Peg found Mount Dora, an historic lakeside village about 45 minutes northwest of Orlando with a wide variety of art scene. In addition to the art galleries, Peg found something for me to do while she was touring the galleries. Mount Dora is also the home of the Mount Dora Museum of Speed. The museum, owned by Kerry Bogard, operates "Classic Dreamcars" specializing in ultra-low mileage, and restored classic American and Foreign Motorcars. The museum houses a variety of classic cars that are for sale and a number of cars from Kerry's private collection. In addition to the amazing collection of classic vehicles, the museum houses Kerry's 40+ year collection of automotive memorabilia. Kerry calls it "the Ultimate Man Cave". Two of my favorite cars in the collection were a numbers matching 1966 Shelby GT350 with a Paxton supercharger and a 1966 427 Cobra. A beautiful 1957 T-Bird resto-mod with modern running gear including a 5.0L V-8 was being prepped for delivery to a customer. I spent a couple of hours checking out the cars, memorabilia and talking cars with Kerry. By closing time, I was interested in finding a place for dinner. Kerry recommended a burger in a little pub called the Frog and the Monkey in downtown Mount Dora. Peggy and I both agreed the burgers were the best we have ever had. Later that evening, Mount Dora hosted a gallery crawl with many galleries extending their hospitality. After looking at more art and sampling the appetizers and refreshments, we heading back to our hotel. Peggy and I also agreed that Mount Dora was one of the highlights of our vacation. If you are visiting Orlando Florida, don't miss the opportunity to visit Mount Dora and the Museum of Speed.
