Daniel and Vanessa Parker are an American success story. He is a Washington, D.C.
power broker, and she is a doctor with a thriving practice. But behind the façade,
their marriage is a shambles, and their teenage son, Quentin, is self-destructing. In
desperation, Daniel dusts off a long-delayed dream - a sailing trip around the world.
In the American Southwest, Nevada, Arizona, and California skirmish for
dwindling shares of the Colorado River. Into the fray steps Angel Velasquez,
detective, leg-breaker, assassin and spy. A Las Vegas water knife, Angel “cuts”
water for his boss ensuring that the rich stay wet, while the poor get nothing
but dust. When rumors of a game-changing water source surface, Angel is sent
to investigate. There, he encounters Lucy Monroe, a hardened journalist with
every reason to hate Angel, and Maria Villarosa, a young Texan refugee who
survives by her wits and street smarts in a city that despises everything that
she represents. With bodies piling up, bullets flying, and Phoenix teetering
on collapse, it seems like California is making a power play to monopolize the
life-giving flow of a river. For Angel, Lucy, and Maria time is running out and
their only hope for survival rests in each other’s hands. But when water is more
valuable than gold, alliances shift like sand, and the only thing for certain is that
someone will have to bleed if anyone hopes to drink.
Half a world away, on the lawless coast of Somalia, Ismail Ibrahim is plotting the
rescue of his sister, Yasmin, from the man who murdered their father. Driven to crime
by love and loyalty, he hijacks ships for ransom money.
Paul Derrick is the FBI’s top hostage negotiator. His twin sister Megan, is a celebrated
defense attorney. When Paul is called to respond to a hostage crisis at sea, he has
no idea how far it will take them both into their traumatic past - or the chance it will
give them to redeem the future.
Across continents and oceans, through storms and civil wars, their paths converge
in a single, explosive moment.

Thursday, 12th October, 1592. Eighteen days after the action closes in An Air
of Treason, courtier Sir Robert Carey and Carey’s surly, larcenous, and loyal
henchman Henry Dodd, Land Sergeant of Gilsland, are back in Carlisle and
the Debateable Lands, the Border country, the Wild North, the land of the
hot trod where the thieving, feuding reiver clans are “English when it suited,
and Scots at their pleasure.” A Chorus of Innocents ushers forward Lady
Elizabeth Widdrington, the married woman whom Carey adores but respects.
It opens when a very pregnant young woman rides to Lady Widdrington’s
tower crying that her minister husband has been murdered and she herself
has been raped. You will meet canny King James VI, his amoral favorite Lord
Spynie, the fey Lady Hume, Mr. Anricks, a surprisingly skilled tooth drawer,
Young Henry Widdrington with his unfortunate spots, and all the boys in
murdered Minister Burn’s choir. The action proceeds full tilt for ten days and
“finishes with a marvelous set piece of derring-do involving enough arms
and ammunition for the siege of Stalingrad, plus the last line will leave you

with your heart in your mouth,” says author Dana Stabenow.

A man stands on the Golden Gate Bridge, poised to jump…if a woman on
the other end of the phone tells him to.
Clio Marsh is a brilliant ornithologist who has forged a mostly solitary life
studying birds. As she finds herself falling in love with a dashing older man,
Clio realizes she must come to terms with her past in order to face a brighter
future.
Maris’ safe suburban world was shattered the day her daughter was found
murdered, presumably at the hands of the young woman’s boyfriend. Her
marriage crumbling, her routine shattered, Maris walks away from her
pampered life as a Bay Area mom the day she receives a call from Ron, father
of her daughter’s killer. Wracked with guilt over his son’s actions (and his own
possible contribution to them), he asks Maris a single question: should he
jump?
With a man’s life in her hands, Maris must decide, what she truly wants.
Retribution? Forgiveness? Or something more? Having lost everything,
she’s finally free to recreate herself without the confining labels of “wife,”
“mother,” or “mourner.” But will this shocking offer free her, or destroy her?

Under Tiberius is a thrilling story of crime and deceit involving the man
who came to be called Jesus Christ. Deep in the recesses of the Vatican,
Nick Tosches unearths a first-century memoir by Gaius Fulvius Falconius,
foremost speechwriter for Emperor Tiberius. The codex is profound, proof of
the existence of a Messiah who was anything but the one we’ve known -- a
shabby and licentious thief.
American, Rebecca Porter, was never one for fairy tales. Her twin sister,
Lacey, has always been the romantic who fantasized about glamour. Yet it’s
Bex who seeks adventure at Oxford and finds herself living down the hall
from Prince Nicholas, Great Britain’s future king. And when Bex can’t resist
falling for Nick, the person behind the prince, it propels her into a world
she did not expect to inhabit, under a spotlight she is not prepared to face.
After encountering him in the streets of Judea, Gaius becomes spin doctor
to Jesus, and the pair scheme to accrue untold riches by convincing the
masses that Jesus is the Son of God. As their marriage of truth and lies
is consummated, friendship and wary respect develop between these two
grifters.
But the relationship also comes with unimaginable baggage: hysterical
tabloids, Nick’s sparkling and far more suitable ex-girlfriends, and a royal
family whose private life is much thornier and more tragic than anyone
on the outside knows. The pressures are almost too much to bear, as Bex
struggles to reconcile the man she loves with the monarch he’s fated to
become.
Outrageous and disturbing, Under Tiberius is as black as the ravishing night,
shot through with fierce and brilliant light.
9
who they’ll think I am
Now, on the eve of the wedding of the century, Bex is faced with whether
everything she’s sacrificed for love-her career, her home, her family, maybe
even herself-will have been for nothing.

It all started with a pinky swear... Linden McGregor is tall, rugged, and
gunslinger handsome; a helicopter pilot with a Scottish brogue and charm
to spare. He’s also one of Stephanie Robson’s best friends and has fit into
that box for as long as she’s known him. Beautiful, funny and an ambitious
businesswoman (with one hell of an ass), Stephanie Robson is one of Linden
McGregor’s best friends and has fit into that box for as long as he’s known her.
But some relationships can’t be boxed, can’t be classified, can’t be tamed.
Back in their mid-twenties and tired of the competitive hit-or-miss dating
scene of San Francisco, Steph and Linden made a pact to marry each other if
neither one of them were in a serious relationship by the time they hit thirty.
It sounded like fun and games at the time but as the years to thirty tick past
and lovers come and go out of their lives, the pact becomes larger than life.
Sex is inevitable. Friendships are tested. Hearts are on the line. The pact is
about to change everything.

1875: Drunken Bride, Texas. An ex-slave named Persimmon Wilson awaits
his hanging for the murder of the man who once owned him. As he waits,
he pens his story. The journey of Persimmon Wilson takes the reader from
the brutality of slavery on a Louisiana sugar plantation to a ranch on the
Texas frontier to life among the Comanche Indians. All through his travels,
Persimmon Wilson seeks the one person he loves, a light-skinned house slave
named Chloe. When he finds her, she is passing for white and is the wife of
their former master. This is a rip-roaring, old-fashioned adventure romance. It
is also a serious examination of assumptions about identity and truth.
In the wake of a tragedy that tore her life down to the foundations, Dr. Alison
McAdams has lost her way. So when she’s summoned to Napa to care for her
ailing father, she’s not sure she has anything to offer him—or anyone else.
“This extraordinary novel, part Cold Mountain, part Dances With
Wolves, is a love story, a thriller, an epic adventure tale, and impossible
to put down. Nancy Peacock writes with power and lyricism, creating
characters who come to vivid life and whose struggles grip the soul.”

In downtown Milwaukee, Lou works tirelessly to build her beloved yet
struggling French restaurant into a success. She cheerfully balances her
demanding business and even more demanding fiancé…until the morning
she discovers him in the buff—with an intern.
Poxl West fled the Nazis’ onslaught in Czechoslovakia. He escaped their

Witty yet gruff British transplant Al is keeping himself employed and
entertained by writing scathing reviews of local restaurants in the Milwaukee
newspaper under a pseudonym.
His teenage nephew, Eli Goldstein, reveres him as a brave, singular, Jewish
war hero.
The day that Al’s mean-spirited review of Luella’s runs, the two cross paths in

Helicopter pilot Lt. Sara Denning joins a navy battle group with little fanfare--and
that’s just the way she likes it. After her brother’s tragic death, her career path
seemed obvious: step into his shoes and enter the Naval Academy, despite her
fear of water. Sara’s philosophy is simple--blend in, be competent, and above
all, never do anything to stand out as a woman in a man’s world.
Somewhere along the way, Sara lost herself--her feminine, easygoing soul is
now buried under so many defensive layers, she can’t reach it anymore.
When she meets strong, self-assured Lt. Eric Marxen, her defenses start to
falter. Eric coordinates flight operations for a Navy SEAL team that requests
Sara as the exclusive pilot. This blatant show of favoritism causes conflict, and
her roommate and best friend, the only other woman on the ship, is avoiding
her.
The SEALs’ mission is so secret, even Sara doesn’t know the reason behind her
mandated participation. When Sara’s life is on the line, can she find her true self
again and follow the orders of her heart before it is too late?

A little girl has witnessed a mass shooting. What she knows may be the key
to finding the man responsible. But Molly is an unusual child. She is sweet
and bright, and eager to help, but she has a quirk of her own: an intense
preoccupation with numbers. It helps her notice things that others don’t. It also
leads Jenna into a maze of speculation that could turn into a wild goose chase
while the body count continues to rise.
Jenna and Molly view the world through their own filters. In some ways, they
speak different languages. Now Jenna must learn to communicate, to break
Molly’s code, to understand the mind of a murderer…

Where Hurwitz’s Nate Overbay meets Burke’s Dave Robicheaux lies
protagonist Peter Ash, a rootless veteran with invisible war wounds, who risks
everything to help the people he loves.
Peter Ash came home from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan with only one
souvenir: buzzing claustrophobia due to post-traumatic stress that has driven
him to spend a year roaming in nature, sleeping under the stars. But when
a friend from the Marines commits suicide, Ash returns to civilization to help
the man’s widow with some home repairs. Under her dilapidated porch, he
finds more than he bargained for: the largest, ugliest, meanest dog he’s ever
encountered . . . and a Samsonite suitcase stuffed with cash and explosives.
As Ash begins to investigate this unexpected discovery, he finds himself at
the center of a plot that is far larger than he could have imagined . . . and it
may lead straight back to the world he thought he’d left for good.

A series of strange events throws the world into turmoil. As a manned Chinese
rocket explodes upon launch, three American astronauts, each separated
by thousands of miles, are murdered. An archaeologist in Croatia uncovers
elaborate primitive paintings by a tribe of Neanderthals. The artwork, painted
in blood, illustrates an immense battle between the Neanderthals-joined by
Homo sapiens-and frightening shadowy figures.
From ancient tunnels in Ecuador that span the breadth of South America to
the lost archives tied to the sunken continent of Atlantis, Sigma embarks on
its most harrowing journey ever-and faces off against its greatest threat: an
ancient evil, resurrected by modern genetic science, strong enough to bring
about the end of man’s dominance on this planet. Only this time, Sigma will

Sherlock Holmes and Henry James come to America together to solve the
death of Clover Adams--member of the Adams family that has given the
United States two Presidents. Clover’s suicide appears to be more than it
at first seemed; the suspected foul play may involve matters of national
importance.
Holmes has faked his own death because, through his powers of
ratiocination, the great detective has come to the conclusion that he is
a fictional character. This leads to serious complications for James--for if
his esteemed fellow investigator is merely a work of fiction, what does
that make him? And what can the master storyteller do to fight against
the sinister power -- possibly named Moriarty -- that may or may not be
controlling them from the shadows?

Patricia can talk to animals and sometimes control the elements, while
Laurence can build supercomputers and anti-gravity machines. They meet in
eighth grade, when they’re desperately lonely and have nobody else to talk
to, and barely survive a series of terrible ordeals. Then they meet again 10
years later. Patricia has found an eccentric and strange community of witches
to belong to, not realizing that the witches hide a dark secret. Meanwhile,
Laurence has found his own group of mad scientists, who are working on a
project to save the human race from a possible ecological collapse.
Now Laurence and Patricia each have their own separate worlds to belong
to -- but they still share a connection that nobody else can understand. Soon
enough, though, Laurence and Patricia find themselves on the opposite sides
of a war between science and magic, with the fate of the world at stake. In

From a High Tower is the newest adventure in Mercedes Lackey’s Elemental
Masters series, featuring a retelling of Rapunzel’s not-so-happily-ever-after
ending.
The Elemental Masters fantasy series, written by Mercedes Lackey, takes
place on an alternate earth where magic exists. Elemental Masters are those
who have magical control over air, water, fire, or earth. Each elemental master
has power over elementals, as well. Each book in the series is loosely based
on a fairy tale. This is the 11th book in the series, other books in the series are
based on Beauty and the Beast, Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella,
The Snow Queen, Puss in Boots, Donkeyskin, East of the Sun and West of
the Moon, Steadfast Tin Soldier, and Red Riding Hood.
Fraternal twins Nels and Suvi move beyond their royal heritage and into
military and magical dominion in this flintlock epic fantasy debut from a twotime Campbell Award finalist.
Prince Nels is the scholarly runt of the ancient Kainen royal family of Eledore,
disregarded as flawed by the king and many others. Only Suvi, his fraternal
twin sister, supports him. When Nels is ambushed by an Acrasian scouting
party, he does the forbidden for a member of the ruling family: He picks up
a fallen sword and defends himself.
Disowned and dismissed to the military, Nels establishes himself as a leader
as Eledore begins to shatter under the attack of the Acrasians, who the Kainen
had previously dismissed as barbarians. But Nels knows differently, and with
the aid of Suvi, who has allied with pirates, he mounts a military offensive
with sword, canon, and what little magic is left in the world.

This latest book from the expert on violence focuses on the video game
industry’s exploitation of violence and torture and abuse of women.
At his death in December 2011, Christopher Hitchens left many essays
previously unpublished in book form. Now the best of them are collected
in this posthumous volume.
Lieutenant Colonel Dave Grossman is an internationally recognized scholar,
author, soldier, and speaker who is one of the world s foremost experts in
the field of human aggression and the roots of violence and violent crime.
Colonel Grossman is a West Point psychology professor, Professor of Military
Science, and an Army Ranger who has combined his experiences to become
the founder of a new field of scientific endeavor, which he has termed
killology. In this new field Colonel Grossman has made revolutionary new
contributions to our understanding of killing in war, the psychological costs
of war, the root causes of the current “virus” of violent crime that is raging
around the world, and the process of healing the victims of violence, in war
and peace.
45
Hitchens remains even now among the very best commentators on our
conflicted world. His felicity of language, the oxygen in every sentence,
the enviable wit and his readiness to fight a foe or mount the ramparts
has garnered him more and more readers, especially among a younger
generation, despite his untimely demise. His directness and sympathy,
his insight and humor set a writerly standard that is still unmatched. This
indispensable book adds to a body of work that has stood the test of time.
It offers as well the perfect introduction to the pugnacious polemics of
Christopher Hitchens.

For centuries, humans have been dreaming of finding life out in space. In
The Sirens of Mars, a brilliant young planetary scientist tells the story of
those dreams. Her book draws a vivid portrait of how knowledge progresses
and hopes persist.
Brownie Wise did not invent the Tupperware Party, but she’s the reason you
know what one is. Already successful leading at-home sales businesses in
the 1940s, Brownie caught the eye of Earl Tupper, inventor of Tupperware,
and when she joined his fledgling company, they became unstoppable. She
codified and standardized how Tupperware should be sold by its mostly
female, at-home sales force and drove profits through the roof. Strong
personalities the both of them, it wasn’t long before Tupper and Wise butted
heads about where and how the products should be sold, and when Tupper
considered how it looked to potential investors that his head of sales was a
woman, he cut her off. Brownie was fired and stripped of her Tupperware
Lady fame. She died in obscurity.
Sarah Stewart Johnson teaches at Georgetown University. Her scientific
research focuses on the evolution of the early Martian surface environment
and the associated implications for habitability. She has helped develop
a life detection instrument for a future mission to Mars, completed field
seasons in Antarctica, Argentina, Australia, and Madagascar (hostile
environments that provide Earth’s closest approximation to the punishing
conditions today on Mars), conducted research at the Niels Bohr Institute
in Copenhagen, and worked at mission control for NASA’s Spirit and
Opportunity Rovers. She has degrees from Oxford and MIT and has been
a Rhodes Scholar, a White House Fellow and a Junior Fellow in the Society
of Fellows at Harvard, a signal honor in the world of scholarship.

Platform World is the first book to describe how digital technologies are
enabling more and more buyers and sellers to connect and transact business
directly, without an intermediary.
The idea may seem simple, but the implications are profound. Consider this:
across all industries, the share of top twenty firms dominated by platforms
has gone from 10% to 25% in just eight years. The most important emerging
business models used by startups and incumbents are all platforms. The
largest IPO in history, Alibaba, is a platform.
Written by today’s three most sought-after experts on the topic – including
two of the authors of the definitive Harvard Business Review article that first
explained the phenomenon – Platform World shows readers how to develop,
grow, and manage a successful platform business in any industry of any size.

Here’s an astonishing take on world history: The secret weapon that defeated
armies, formed nations, and opened up an undreamt-of future was . .
.literature. This book is a constantly amazing account of how the alphabet,
paper, print, bound books, the Internet, and other life-altering advances in
writing technology turned storytelling into a powerful political force.
Puchner ought to know. In the course of creating The Norton Anthology
of World Literature (six volumes, nearly 6,000 pages), he has had to forge
an understanding that reaches very far. In The Written World, he is looking
not at literary works themselves, but at the rocket power they have had to
transform the world we live in. The story is eye-opening.
One of the leading professors of English at Harvard, Puchner is also the
author of eight scholarly books and editor of not just one but two major
Norton anthologies.

Does cancer run in my family? Am I at risk?
Braiding together the story of Theo’s family history of cancer, the science of
inherited cancer, and the practical advice cancer patients and their families
require, readers learn how cancer mutations are passed through families; why
it’s more important than ever to know your genetic inheritance; how to get
the family health history you need; how best to take advantage of genetic
testing and genetic counseling; and how to assess risk and treatment.
As an oncologist, cancer gene hunter, cancer survivor, and – as she soon
learned – the carrier of a cancer mutation herself, Dr. Theo Ross brings
extraordinary personal and professional experience to bear on inherited
cancer.
No other book has addressed hereditary cancer in this comprehensive,
accessible, empowering format. Nor has one ever been written by a cuttingedge cancer researcher who herself is the bearer of an inherited, cancercausing gene mutation.

A riveting account of Catherine Howard’s tragic marriage to one of history’s most
powerful, and endlessly fascinating rulers. Sixteen months after Catherine Howard
became Queen of England, she would follow her cousin Anne Boleyn to the scaffold,
having been accused of adultery and high treason.
Unlike previous accounts of Catherine Howard, which portray her as a naïve victim of an
ambitious family, this book will shed new light on Catherine Howard’s rise and downfall
by reexamining her motives and showing her in her context, a milieu that does not just
include her family and the influential men of the court, but the aristocrats and, most
critically, the servants who surrounded her and who, in the end, conspired against her.
This dramatic story is not just one of high politics and a monarchy struggling to control
the forces unleashed by the Reformation. It is a human tale of complex individuals
attempting to survive in a dangerous hothouse. By illuminating Catherine’s entwined
upstairs/downstairs worlds, and bringing the reader into her daily milieu, the author
retells her story in an exciting and engaging way that has surprisingly modern
resonances.

THE WORM AT THE CORE
Sheldon Solomon, Jeff Greenberg & Tom Pyszczynski
A transformative,
fascinating theory—
based on robust
and groundbreaking
experimental research—
reveals how our
unconscious fear of death
powers almost everything
we do, shining a light on
the hidden motives that
drive human behavior
Random House, May 2015 (North American)
The Worm at the Core is the product of twenty-five years of in-depth research.
Drawing from innovative experiments conducted around the globe, Solomon,
Greenberg, and Pyszczynski show conclusively that the fear of death and
the desire to transcend it inspires us to buy expensive cars, crave fame, put
our health at risk, and disguise our animal nature. The fear of death can
also prompt judges to dole out harsher punishments, make children react
negatively to people different from themselves, and inflame intolerance and
violence.
Emerging from their research is a unique and compelling approach to these
deeply existential issues: terror management theory. Written in an accessible,
jargon-free style, The Worm at the Core offers a compelling new paradigm for
understanding the choices we make in life—and a pathway toward divesting
ourselves of the cultural and personal illusions that keep us from accepting
the end that awaits us all.
