UWC Dilijan College
OPENED SEPTEMBER 2014
Dear Friends,
In August 2014 when UWC Dilijan College, the first international school in Armenia, welcomed its initial intake of 96
students from 48 countries, we could finally see the fruits of almost ten years’ work. A group of like-minded individuals,
mostly of Armenian extraction, put energy and funds into the creation of a beautiful school with world-class facilities as a
hub for international secondary education and a force for good in the region. One of those sending the school his best wishes
on the day the school formally opened last October was the Prince of Wales, a former UWC President. Many international
donors were present at the opening, including Mr Shelby Davis who established scholarships to enable American students
to attend UWC schools around the world and is funding two students in each year in our school. The opening day was a
memorable event that set the tone for the ethos of UWC Dilijan which Mr John Puddefoot, Founding Head of the school,
created in the first year, together with his dedicated staff and outstanding students. Our beautiful school received a number
of awards for its cutting-edge architecture including for its green technologies. The second phase of the school construction
is now being planned.
As of August 2015:
• UWC Dilijan has 190 students from 63 countries studying in the first and second years of IB programme.
• 48% of students (90 of 190) are on full scholarships.
• 50% of students (95 of 190) are on partial scholarships and the average partial scholarship is about 67% of the total
tuition amount.
• In total, with the donors’ support, the College is funding 84% of tuition fees ($5,542,610).
• 28 donors provided full scholarships for 40 students, and the funds to cover the costs of other scholarships were
contributed by many other supporters.
In preparing to ensure that our students on graduation in 2016 can avail of higher education opportunities we are
undertaking two initiatives through our foundation RVVZ:
• We concluded an agreement with the Luys Foundation in Armenia that Armenian UWC graduates from all UWC
colleges will be awarded a full scholarship (50% from Luys Foundation and 50% from RVVZ) on acceptance to top ten
universities in the world (according to the Academic Ranking of World Universities).
• We will provide five full scholarships to non-Armenian students accepted to the American University of Armenia.
As the school welcomed the second cohort of students we would like to express our deepest appreciation to John Puddefoot,
whose exceptional leadership has taken UWC Dilijan from strength to strength, to the talented teaching, support and
technical staff, and of course to the students from around the world who make the school what it is. Volunteers on the
UWC Dilijan College Boards of Governors and Trustees have been working very hard to guarantee the school’s financial
viability, in particular ensuring that the ongoing construction is of the highest standards.
We offer our most sincere gratitude to the UWC Dilijan Founding Patrons, Gagik Adibekyan, Noubar & Anna Afeyan,
Vladimir & Anna Avetissian and Oleg Mkrtchan, who have provided continued support, and to each and every donor
who generously contributed to the project. We hope that you find satisfaction in empowering the lives of our amazing
international body of students and in developing an institution which, we hope, is a signpost to Armenia’s future as a
world nation.
This year Armenians commemorated the country’s painful memory – the anniversary of the Genocide of 1915. The
establishment of UWC Dilijan and the energy it brings to Dilijan and the region at this moment in Armenia’s history
makes a strong and positive statement about aspirations for the future.
Warmest wishes,
Veronika Zonabend and Ruben Vardanyan

In August 2015 our 96 first-year students welcomed the second generation, and the school now
has 190 young people from 63 countries. Seventeen
new teachers joined the original staff. The school is
poised to have another exciting, successful and fulfilling year.
In April the Armenian General Benevolent Union
(AGBU), the world’s largest non-profit organisation
devoted to upholding the Armenian heritage, held a
session of its 88th Assembly with 250 people in attendance at UWC Dilijan. The AGBU visit to Armenia
coincided with the 100th anniversary of the Armenian
Genocide which is commemorated this year. AGBU
provided a generous grant of $500,000 over five
years for the development of cultural, art and music
activities at the school.
In April the first group of 48 students and five staff visited Dumfries
House in Scotland for a most successful and enjoyable educational
experience. The students had a chance to meet with HRH The Prince
of Wales, who is personally involved in the UWC Dilijan – Dumfries
House partnership. The link with Dumfries House was made possible
by the generosity of the donors including Vladimir & Anna Avetissian, Kairat & Sholpan Boranbayev, Konstantin Nikolaev, Sofia &
Andrey Vdovin, Ruben Vardanyan and Veronika Zonabend who all
supported the renovation of “The Mains”, now “The Dilijan Building”
at Dumfries House.
Kairat & Sholpan Boranbayev are
generously supporting scholarships for students from Kazakhstan.
Gagik Adibekyan, Noubar & Anna
Afeyan, Ruben Vardanyan and
Veronika Zonabend and corporate supporters Ameria Group and
ARDSHININVESTBANK generously provided scholarships for Armenian students.

The American philanthropist Mr
Shelby M.C. Davis who is the International Patron of the United
World Colleges movement has
recently made a $15 million gift to
UWC International. Mr Davis is the
founder of Davis Advisors, a mutual fund management company.
The donation is for the benefit of
all 15 UWC schools around the
world to be used exclusively for the
establishment of a matched incentive plan enhancing alumni and
parental giving across all schools.
Every school, including UWC Dilijan, will avail of a $1 million contribution from Mr Davis over time
to be matched by donations from
alumni, parents and friends.
UWC Dilijan boasts a wellequipped and cosy medical centre
the funding for which was generously provided by Arman Voskerchyan & Kristina Ter-Kazaryan.

Dr Armen Sarkissian, former Prime
Minister of Armenia, made a major donation to support physics
education at UWC Dilijan. Himself
a world-class physicist, Dr Sarkissian is passionate about science and
technology education.
Ziyavudin Magomedov and his
wife Olga have been tremendous supporters of UWC Dilijan.
Through his private foundation,
Peri, Mr Magomedov supported
the construction of two tennis
courts in UWC Dilijan. He also supports scholarships.
UWC Dilijan College’s soccer pitch
was developed and is maintained
with the help of the Football Federation of Armenia. Our students
and the Dilijan community are enjoying this fabulous facility.
