It is custom to write a programmatic editorial, in this instance the task of this magazine is not to situate itself directly inside the
project’s set of problems, as one of the debate’s protagonists, but wants to behave like a neutral and detached observer.
In this moment, as never before, we consider absolutely necessary to show the freedom of intellectuals and professionals, making
ourselves available to a check of other’s positions, offering concrete examples of how designers wish to solve and propose their
ideas. After all, these years of recession must be overcame carefully, not only calling our certainties into question, but also, and
above all, developing a new and updated attention to the world which is changing.
The projects illustrated in these pages arise in the name of a new aptitude for designing with a largely propositional attitude.
This optimism, maybe only instinctive, marks the incentive for the survey of a new emotionality and quality, as possible meaning
and direction of the project.

Albed is a brand of the company Delmonte, which
has been studying, exploring and projecting innovative solutions for over 50 years. Albed has
been a point of reference in the branch of the aluminum’s industrial production and has specialized in the
production and distribution of modular systems (such
as bookcases, rigged dividing walls, walk-in closets), of
doors (swing, for cavity wall, and sliding ones) and of
the furniture for living and sleeping quarters, from public spaces to offices, from waiting rooms to hotel
rooms.
The entire production is made in Italy, with materials which respect every safety criteria and the environmental protections. This factor, with the
technological research and the know-how, allows
the creation of custom-made products to meet specific demands.
In 2014 the company has celebrated its first 50 years
of activity with the opening of a new showroom in
the centre of Milan, in Via San Damiano 5. The space
takes up two levels, one on ground floor facing the
street, the other underground, with a overall surface
of 300m2 , designed by the architect Paolo Festa.
The first floor has a double exposure and is therefore very bright. Here it is possible to admire several products: from the Vista walk-in cabin with Dot
sliding door, to an artistic revaluation of the Line
bench with its rustic brace which consists in a section of irregular trunk. In the lowest level the artificial illumination projects the light and creates an
evocative visual path, thanks to the taylor-made specific stage-equipment.

Which lighting application has the project
'Spectral Light' as far as the hospitality is concerned? Why is it useful for us?
P. R. Today we need to select the spectrums of electromagnetic wavelength ray we emit in order to reduce the energy, because the older bulb was
emitting a lot of infrareds and it was only 5% of the
light that was useful, only 5% of the energy. So it is
no more allowed to use these bulb lamps. This
means that today we have to select the light that is
most efficient according to the human eye. This is
the first reason. Then we have to reflect which will
be the wavelength that is good for the eye, and then
we know that inside the eye we have the cornea that
is perceiving the intensity of light; the human cornea
can perceive three wavelengths and if you emit a
light inside this wavelength it is good for the eye because it is relaxing. If you emit another wavelength
it creates a sort of headache of you get tired because
you have to recompose the light.
This is a human good lighting which the human
eye perceives in a good way. So this is in a certain way the most ecological, economical and
catchy wavelength for humans. This is the first
element of our lamps. But there are not only humans but also some other animals, inside the
house for example: dogs, birds, hamsters,
rats…and there are also green plants, we choose
which wavelength is the best for each of the living species. The final product is a composition
of all these wavelengths, and this means that you
can decide, if you are alone with your dog, to
have human and animal wavelength, and if you
are leaving the house and you have some green
plants you can turn off the human wavelength
and keep on the plants’ one. It is a little bit like
a perfumer for which you compose the scent by
adding different essences and different chemical
elements in order to obtain a relaxing effect.
So this is a good project also for hospitality,
isn’t it?
P. R. of course this is very good also for hospitality:
it is the first product of our new line that we have
planned also for this branch this year.

The new seat of Centre Pompidou in Malaga,
where also the Italian innovation and design are present, has been inaugurated on March 2015. The transparent concrete of Italcementi is one of the
characteristical elements of the building, designed
by the French artist Daniel Buren. This also marks
out the skyline of the city’s harbour.
It is the first time the famous French Museum allows
the realization of an own building outside the national boundaries. Many authorities have taken part
to the inauguration, like the Spanish prime minister
Marian Rajoy Brey, the French culture minister Fleur
Pellerin, the major of Malaga Francisco de la Torre
and the president of the Centre Pompidou, Alain
Seban.
The Centre Pompidou in Paris is the most important
cultural landmark, and the third most visited mo-
nument in France. Its Spanish spin-off, called “PopUp Pompidou” similarly inserts in the cultural circuit of the Andalusian city, already full of prestigious
centres like the Museum of Picasso, the Centre of
Contemporary Arts, the Museum of Thyssen and the
Museum of Russian Art of Saint Petersburg, placing
Malaga as the Spanish Culture’s and Art’s Capital
City.
Italcementi, with the Spanish firm FyM, has contributed to the project by offering 250m2 of i.light,
the transparent concrete, specifically produced in
the research centre i.lab Italcementi for the Italian
Pavilion of Expo Shangai 2010.

The five-star Hotel Sahrai in Fez (Morocco), designed by the architect and designer Christophe
Pillet, is one of the 50 best destinations for 2015 according to Time Magazine. The hotel enjoys spectacular views of the largest medina in the Arab world,
taking in twelve centuries of the city’s history in one
fell swoop.
Just 2h30 away from Paris, it offers a totally new hotel
experience in Fez. An alternative to the shady isolation of the riads and the impersonal feel of the big
resorts, its architecture on a human scale is a combination of tradition and contemporary style.
All the volumes convey the total mastery of space
and light that distinguishes Christophe Pillet’s
work, with a scale and layout that combine splendour with intimacy. Christoph Pillet has commissioned Varaschin the of Varaschin Summer Set,
family of outdoor furniture with metal casing for
comfortable seating and linear electro welded wire
network, Pillet has designed monocoque seats that
represent the soul of the company as fully formed
from a tangle of wires that create cozy and linear seating. This family is fully the in-out philosophy of Varaschin: they can be used as patio furniture, as well
as chairs for indoor areas.

The flagship store of Shoebaloo , a prestigious
Dutch luxury shoes and accessories company, was
opened in the heart of Amsterdam at number 5 on
the central Koenigsplein square. “Seeking innovation both in the design as well as the plan and its
execution” is the premise that the architect Robert
Meyer and project leader Harry van den Berg
have reflected in creating the project, as those responsible for the futuristic design of this distinctive
Shoebaloo store. The use of cutting-edge HIMACS® acrylic stone clearly represents an innovative vision and commitment to using advanced
materials that match the business’ luxury aesthetic.
On the outside, the store’s styles and colours contrast with the buildings of Amsterdam’s historical
centre. The glass front, flanked by two narrow Belgian bluestone piers, opens on a transparent world
and intrigues the pedestrians. In primo piano, just
besides the glass façade, Close-up there is an elliptical bright white display window where the models
are displayed, which gradually transforms into two
openings that, from the street, look into the store.
On the inside, a dynamic play of lines emerges from
the display window, forming curved surfaces with
different heights and dimensions and integrated lighting, where the shoes are displayed. The store
comprises two elliptical spaces that gravitate towards
each other in the center. At the rear is the counter and
a large vertical elliptic vitrine, as well as a smaller display that houses accessories. The freestanding mirrors and seating elements were custom-designed.

Emu’s collections furnish the outdoor areas of the
loft of Hell’s Kitchen Italia, the culinary talent
show hosted by Carlo Cracco, on Sky Uno HD. Unchanged format compared with the last edition, with
two competing teams who challenge in 8 episode’s
time for the nomination of “Executive Chef” for the
first Hell’s Kitchen restaurant, at the Forte Village in
Sardinia; the furnishings and the structure of the TVset are instead completely renovated and inspired
to an “industrial style”.
Shine and Grace of Emu, respectively designed by
The British Pavilion at the 2015 World Expo in Milan
fits the Expo’s theme of “feeding the planet, Energy
for life”; it resembles a large beehive in a wildflower
meadow. Designed by British artist Wolfgang Buttress with designer and engineer Tristan Simmonds, the pavilion explores bee-colony life
through an immersive multisensory experience.
After walking through an orchard and a meadow of
wildflowers, visitors enter The Hive. The delicate,
ethereal structure is constructed of a 46-foot-tall aluminum lattice. The Hive pulses, buzzes, and glows

veehive. Vibration sensors measure the activity of a
real bee colony in the U.K. That information is fed
via real-time signals to a LED light array in The Hive,

rods to conduct light from the LEDs into handblown glass bulbs that refract and diffuse light.

until late night with a panoramic terrace looking on piazza Duomo, an element which
makes it the perfect place for a cocktail, a meeting or a big dinner.

“We have done a great job by recreating a
classic and contemporary space in an historical location, inside V. Emanuele II’s gallery and near the Cathedral of Milan. The color tones and the choice of
using wood as a material unites this location to its real
identity, which goes beyond traditions, of Townhouse
Duomo, the hotel nearby”, comments the architect
who has designed the space, Massimo Magaldi.
This new and prestigious location, launched even in
range of the activities which will animate the Fuori
Expo, is placed in front of the historical Terrazza Mar-
tini, a symbol of italian’s lifestyle and, at the same
time, looks farther to the new Terrazza Martini,
which will appear from the 1st of May to the 31st of
October on the first floor of Expo’s Italian Pavilion.
We have therefore built an itinerary which, from
Milan, reaches the universal exposition, in order to
value the excellence of Martini and of the Made in

DUOMO 21
After 138 years from the demise of the architect
Mengoni – who designed V. Emanuele II’s Gallery
– we have completed this enormous work, with the
restoration and the reopening of the ‘third passage’,
the one which goes along the Gallery’s roof, from
Piazza Duomo to Piazza della Scala: the promoter is
Alessandro Rosso, a businessman who firmly believes in the success of Expo Milano 2015 and who
works in the sector of tourism in the hotel business
with the ‘Seven Stars Galleria’, which represents
an exclusive model of hospitality. Dedicated to the
most sophisticated businessmen and visitors, it is located inside Vittorio Emanuele’s Gallery, national
monument which connects Piazza Duomo with
Piazza della Scala, the most prestigious Italian Opera
House.
To the 7 suites a new space has been added: the
Penthouse, 580m2 with an exclusive entrance from
Piazza della Scala, on the corner of V. Emanuele II’s
Gallery. Also new wide upstairs areas of 650m2 have
been opened to the public, after their restoration.
The new spaces will be dedicated to museum appointments, events, conferences, shows and catering activities.
“650m2 of a worldwide Italian symbol will open to everyone for the first time. We thank Milan’s Municipality for
this great opportunity, also in view of Expo 2015”, explains
Alessandro Rosso, owner of the brand TownHouse Hotels. This way, the recovery and enhancement course of
the Gallery’s upper floors goes on, promoted and coordinated by the assessor of the state property office of Milan’s Municipality, Daniela Benelli. E. G.

he renovation and expansion of the historic
Excelsior Hotel Gallia, in the heart of Milan,
is part of the wider urban redevelopment of
Piazza Duca D'Aosta, following the recent
completion of the modernization works at
the Central Station. An international investment
fund from Qatar has acquired the hotel, which
consists of a 1930s building and an extension dating from the early 1960s known as Pirelli Wing,
with the intention of turning it into a five star luxury hotel.

Which was the Global Perception of the Project and the Design Philosophy?
The challenge was a considerable one: to restore the accommodation facility, which
now extends over the entire lot, to its past splendour, bringing the wishes of the owners and designers together in the search for a balance between the old and the
new within a dynamic relationship of shapes, spaces and materials.
The new project comprises a complex of buildings in which the completely restored and renovated late Belle Epoque building stands alongside a newly-designed
structure facing Piazza Duca D'Aosta, via Galvani and via Filzi, to create a light steel
and glass curtain, a counterpoint to the solid, monumental shapes of the "historic"
Gallia.

As requested by the Client, and with the agreement of the
city authorities, the new building was conceived to contrast
to the historic building, the intention being that its architectural character convey a sense of connection with the
modern architecture of the urban surroundings.
The screen printed glass façade, with its irregular alternating patterns of light and shade are, especially along Via Vitruvio, a connecting element between the textures of the
façade of the Pirelli skyscraper and the more far-off textures of Torre Galfa and the new buildings in the Porta Nuova
area.
The project’s concept is a reference to the Milan lifestyle,
to the unique set of dynamic elements that have always
been a feature of the life of the city: the unceasing interaction of the local culture with the most diverse range of
other cultures, which has always been characterized by an
emphasis on newness, beauty, fashion, industrial design
and the dynamic, positive lifestyle in which Milan is utterly
immersed, and which it exports the world over.

Could you please summarize the design methodology applied to Milan’s Excelsior Hotel Gallia?
The design approach was inspired by a study of the location and history of the building and by people’s memories. All these elements are at the heart of the design process. The study of the site, with special emphasis on the urban context, its historical characteristics and the layers of functions and volumes, was the starting point for the
studies of volumes, materials and formal aspects of the work we aimed to accomplish.
In the case of the existing buildings, especially those with a historical architectural value, the survey extended to the structural and stylistic elements, the purpose here being
to identify those design elements which might be a link between history and the functional projection into the future.
So far as the Excelsior Hotel Gallia is concerned, the input we obtained from the recollections of individuals and the community at large was essential for identifying the
new structure of the building that needed to be rendered more functional. For example, the Excelsior Hotel Gallia was frequented for many years by journalists and writers, hosted meetings of Italy’s football community for decades, and was often used as a film or television set.

PROJECTS / INTERVIEW
Which were the project’s phases?
The project to renovate and extend the Excelsior Hotel Gallia is divided into two separate but coordinated phases: the first phase includes the
restoration and functional recovery of the 1930s building, the Excelsior Hotel Gallia, which was built to accommodate travellers arriving in Milan
thanks to the new Central Station. The historic building is richly decorated, with caryatids and mascarons made by using a moulding technique
with a mixture of cement and aggregates. These decorative elements, like all the historic façades, have been completely restored. The steel structures built in the 1990s have been restored to accommodate a destination restaurant, an exclusive event space, and an enormous Royal Suite with
four suites, a private spa and terraces.
The second phase concerns the new building, which is being developed adjacent to the historic building, and replaces the four structures that
had previously been located at the side of the hotel. The new building is adjacent and connected to all the floors of the historic building, and
runs from Piazza Duca D'Aosta to Via Galvani and Via Filzi. It has been built around an internal courtyard, and includes a host of new features:

a centre for meetings, conferences and exhibitions on the
ground floor, a large spa on the sixth and seventh floors,
with swimming pool, gym, saunas, hammam and a wellness
centre. The seventh floor also has a coffee bar with a panoramic terrace. All these spaces are easily accessible, even
by hotel non-residents, thanks to the new high-speed lifts
located in the large new ground floor lobby. The new building is a single morphological structure extending harmoniously along three sides, creating a ground-floor area
which is functionally interrelated with its surroundings and
creates a powerful osmosis with the city.
A second main entrance to the hotel has been created
along Via Filzi, thereby permitting the historic interior façade of the building to be restored. Although this is a less
noble entrance, it has been restored to a state of great dignity, and offers a new scenario for the Via Filzi facade.
This new entrance offers direct access to a large foyer, an
"interior square" covered by a glass roof between the mezzanine and the first floor.
The foyer provides access to the conference and meeting
rooms which are the driver of new functions and a new relationship with the city. Along the access point to the conference and exhibition halls, there is a large service
entrance, interconnected with the hotel service activities
(back of the house) and with a new system of technological equipment mostly located at the basement level, which
has been completely redesigned.

How did you work with the interiors?
The interiors of the new Hotel Excelsior Gallia have been created with great attention being paid to the choice of materials, textures and details, and there are powerful references to design and to the Milanese lifestyle, with a nod to the timeless elegance of Art Deco being added in the shapes and ambiences.

What about the lighting?
To comply with the applicable regulations regarding light pollution, a lighting study of the façades has been carried out
with the aim of highlighting the decorative and allegorical details of the historic building through the use of lighting systems that cannot be seen, so that the special elements and details of the building can be "described" without having
an impact on the surrounding areas.
LED lighting systems have been used for both the exteriors and interiors so as to ensure a longer life for the systems
and therefore less maintenance, with consequent substantial energy and cost savings.

Could you please tell us something about the landscape and the building’s facade?
In line with the ongoing renewal of Piazza Duca D'Aosta, a landscaping project has been created to redevelop the entire block, with particular attention being paid to green
areas, pavements in stone, pedestrian pathways protected by a large glass and steel canopy and parking areas.
The façade of the new building is transparent and light: it consists of 142 cm wide modules, divided into three sections, with two blind sides and an opening glass panel,
which have an inner glass balustrade to transmit light; this element is intended to recall the small balconies, almost flush with the façades, that can be found in many historical buildings in Milan.
The impact of the frame of the building is reduced to a minimum, and the uprights are concealed so as to provide continuity of the façade.
The ground floor has floor-to-ceiling windows to convey a sense of transparency and to offer optimal levels of interaction with the city and the surroundings.
The sixth and seventh floors, which house a spa, a swimming pool, an extended fitness area and a restaurant and rooftop bar, is located inside a light glass space, a glass

curtain which will light up spectacularly in the evening.
In the historic part, the rhythm of the facade is dictated by the existing structural rhythm and windows,
and is of a vertical type. All the wood window frames
in the old wing have been replaced with wood and
bronze-coloured aluminium frames to keep the existing colour scheme and improvements in both thermal and acoustic performance and maintenance.
The façade of the new building takes up the vertical
rhythm imposed by the windows of the historic building; this verticality is also underscored by the choice
of materials.
Since the heights of the various storeys of the historic building are different, in order to maintain the
same internal levels, the new building includes compensation bands so that the façade is modulated
based on the existing structural alignments. The interior façades of the new building are lined with basalt
facings.

Exciting, fluid, functional. This is the language that
distinguishes Marco Piva’s architectural creations,
product design and interior design. The effort in
material and technological research and, the value
of differentiation, the design innovation, lead to
the establishment of Studio Dada Associates,
whose production becomes one of the most representative of the period of Radical Design. In the
'80s opens the Studio Marco Piva, whose work
ranges from large architectural interior design
projects to industrial design. A traveller and a designer, an innovator who is educated in rational
approaches, Marco Piva studies and creates design solutions which are pervaded by stylistic
freedom and compositional sobriety.
In Japan, in Osaka, the Studio has participated in
the design and construction of the innovative
complex Next 21, and has also made the Laguna
Palace in Mestre, the Port Palace in Monte Carlo,
the Hotel Mirage in Kazan, the Una Hotel in Boulogne, the T Hotel in Cagliari, The Move Hotel in Mogliano Veneto and the multifunctional complex Le
Terrazze in Treviso. For the Exedra Boscolo Group
it has created the Suites of Exedra in Rome, the B4
Net Padova Tower and the Tower Hotel in Bologna.
In Dubai, on Palm Jumeirah, it has designed the
Tiara Hotel Oceania Hotel. Always in Dubai it has
designed the innovative complex Porto Dubai. In
Russia it is designing the new complex of the river
port of Novosibirsk. Currently, the Studio is engaged in the construction of the residential complex
of Changzhou (China), on the renovation of a monumental building in Saint Petersburg and in prestigious private houses. In Italy, Piva has just
finished the Hotel Excelsior Gallia and the collaboration with the prestigious fashion maison Bulgari is going ahead, with the design of all its store
windows worldwide.

G-Rough Unconventional Luxury Suite
Rome, Italy
A new hospitality project which gathers the Italian design from ‘30s to the
‘70s and a collection of works designed by young local artists has recently
opened, in order to tell and pass on the history of a different Rome, less
known and outside the box, in an unprecedented ‘Italian way of life’.

building of the 17th century, which

the five-stars hotel designed by Philippe Stack, opened in November
2009 and become in short time the

porary wine gallery, and intends to be an 'unconventional luxury suite', whose preciosity manifests in a
meek luxury rich of history, the result of an innovative blend of the conservative and respectful renovation of the original building, enhancing spaces and
harmony, polished and basic furniture – homage to
the best Italian design from the ‘30s to the ‘70s – and
a deep bond for art.
G-Rough is the outcome of the effort and the research of Gabriele Salini and Emanule Garosci who,
with the supervision and the coordination of the ar-
chitect Giorgia Cerulli, the interior decoration of Benedetta Salini and Vittorio Mango and the artistic curator of Guendalina Salini, have created twenty
locations: each different from the other and decorated by pieces of collection, where to converge the
passion for art and the taste for the recovery of memory and beauty of the past, searching a modern ‘aesthetic pleasure’. ‘Gino’, ‘Ico’, ‘Guglielmo’, ‘Afra’ are
some of the names given to the rooms paying tribute
to Sarfatti, Parisi, Ulrich, Scarpa and to the designers
present with their pieces inside the structure and

their stylized portraits stand out in correspondence
of the respective dedicated suite’s doors, as well as
on the felted key chains. The building’s whitened
walls bring out coarse plasters and underlying stories; the old and originals floor’s cementine tiles have
been recovered and appraised; the furnishings are timeless – designed by great masters like Giò Ponti,
Ico Parisi, Guglielmo Ulrich and Silvio Cavatorta - just
to quote some of them – are integrated in the spaces
and are linked to the contemporary works of art,
made by young roman artists, who stud every space
of the structure to create a sort of diffused gallery
which unravels from room to room.
Everything has a common denominator: the pursuit
of a rarefied but never displayed luxury, which could
celebrate the most iconic Italian design inside a deeply roman architectural frame, both in colors and in
pre-existences, enriched by tailor made facilities and
experiences, capable of offering glimpses of a different Rome, intimate and private. M. B.

a natural way. It has been examined the different alternative sceneries taking into account the energy
costs and the emissions. In the inverted pyramid
shape with few levels has been identified a form
which, acting like an umbrella, projects a shadow and
allows the creation of green areas, following the fundamental principles like the reduction of costs and

METROGRAMMA
Founded more than fifteen years ago through the
partnership between Andrea Boschetti and Alberto Francini, the studio now has five partners
and fifteen collaborators.
Interpreter of intellectual architecture and rooted
in the metropolitan space, Metrogramma responds to the needs of places through an experimental approach which places people and their
relationships at the center of each project. The
studio’s research feeds on the ongoing dialogue
between diverse disciplines and takes form in
projects which tell of a revolutionary and utopic
“contemporary classicism”.
Through the years, Metrogramma has followed an
interdisciplinary path, experimenting with architectural projects on various scales: from their territorial urban scale project for the PGT, which
established the studio on an international level, to
completed projects ranging from residential to
hospitality design, projects in both the private and
commercial sector, and most recently, experimentation in design specific to the luxury sector.

The Roast Room restaurant,
specialized in meat
Asterdam, Nederland
www.studiomodijefsky.nl
Dutch design practice Studio Modijefsky is
the creative mind behind The Roast Room, an impressive new arrival on Amsterdam’s dining scene that
specialises in meat. The latest project of Dutch chef
Michiel Deenik, the restaurant spans two floors (a
brasserie on the ground floor and a fine dining area on
the mezzanine) and is equipped with every tool and
contraption imaginable for preparing all kinds of meat,
including its own little butcher’s corner featuring a rather theatrical wheel for opening and closing its front
window. The Roast Room’s mascot is The Butcher, a
plump figure with a long nose. Other unique features
include the bronze work which was custom-designed
by Studio Molen. The interior has been designed with
great detail and has been hand made by the contributing parties - from the furniture pieces, the bars
and the butcher, to the special lighting, the tiling and
the bronze doorknobs. A stairway resembling a chopping block leads to the Rotisserie on the first floor.
Here, a creamy white bar, a pitch-black kitchen and
a sky of brass light fixtures make up an intimate setting for some fine dining. The centrepiece is a light
sculpture, Ginger Blimp, which connects the two floors. Studio Molen made this monumental chandelier,
just like the other bronze works, especially for the restaurant. C.. A.

STUDIO MODIJEFSKY
Studio Modijefsky designs interior spaces on different scales. Within these spaces the boundaries are crossed and new dimensions start their
existence. Designs where a landscape is created
within an interior, and an interior within a landscape. Architecture can be found within furniture design, and furniture becomes a new
interior. Interiors where people are made aware
of their environment, and are nourished by the
space.
“In our mission to explore the concept of beauty,
nature is of great inspiration and can be a fundamental guideline or starting point to a design.
Design can emerge from a landscape, where it
can grow into an elementary ingredient of the
outside space. Nature can be the foundation for
the design of a public space, but it can also be an
inspiration for the design of an interior”.

Set in the heart of a monumental structure of metal and glass, the Musée des Confluences
presents a journey through time and across continents to observe the world around us.
Right from the 2001 international competition for a
natural history museum in Lyon, the museum was envisioned as a “medium for the transfer of knowledge”
and not as a showroom for products. The building
ground of the museum is located on a peninsula that
was artificially extended 100 years ago and situated
in the confluence of the Rhône and Saône rivers.

Even though it was apparent that this site would have
been a difficult one, it was clear that this location
would have been very important for the urban design. The building should serve as a distinctive beacon and entrance for the visitors approaching from
the South, as well as a starting point for urban development. In order to build a museum of knowledge,
a complex new form had to be developed as an iconic gateway. A building that truly stands out can only
come into being through shapes resulting from new
geometries. It was important to the concept that the
flow of visitors arriving from the city to the Pointe du
Confluent should not be impeded by a building.
The idea was therefore to develop an openly traversable building that would be floating in part only on
supports, in order to create a public space underneath. Essentially, the building consists of three parts.
Situated on a slightly raised base (due to the high
groundwater), two auditoriums (for 327 and 122 persons, respectively) and work spaces, which will also
be used for training purposes for the surrounding
schools, will be located next to the storage and the
workshops for the production of exhibitions. The entrance building, the so-called Crystal, is openly traversable, and a vertical access to the exhibition
spaces. The so-called Espace liant, a connecting path,
can be reached by an escalator, a staircase, and a spiral ramp. Left and right of this path are arranged the
individual exhibition halls (one of them on two levels). A brasserie emphasizes the public nature of this
place. A freely accessible terrace café is located on
the top floor. In the entrance building, a drop-shaped construction serves as supporting structure. Its
form was developed out of the turbulent flow created
by the confluence of the two streams. This gravity
well reduces the weight of the entire steel structure
of the entrance building by a third. M. Z.

“A pleasant layer of synthetic grass improves the look and the insulation of the building whereas
the insulating layer contributes to energy saving. A new and maintenance-free way to improve
energy efficiency and saving."
Roofingreen is a patented puzzle system that doesn’t need any binder and that revolutionizes the way to build and to live
spaces.A set of modules conceived for covering and insulating ventilated surfaces, both flat and vertical: the superficial
layer is made with synthetic grass.
A green surface that is the essence of the product: environmental sustainability as a competitive factor. The technical features of the products contribute to this growing research, not only ensuring the thermal insulation of buildings, but also
avoiding water consumption and limiting the production of waste, thanks to a high level of recyclability of its components.
Roofingreen represents the essence of Italian made products at its very best: using technology to combine the beauty of the
design with the demands for energetic efficiency. A modular system declined in most variants, for example with an integrated
led or in the vertical version, that can be used for different needs and scenarios. Roofingreen represents a really versatile
product that allows you to live in new ways every type of space.
