Keeping Bikes Secure On Campus
Most floors in the residence halls have bike rooms where you can store your bike inside when it is not in use.
•
You can get a key for the bike room when you check into your room on move-in day or from the service desk in your residence hall.
It is important to keep your bike locked at all times.
•
The best kind of lock to buy is a U-lock.
•
These will keep your bikes most secure and are extremely hard to break.
•
View an example of a U-lock at www.kryptonitelock.com/Products/List.aspx?cid=1001&scid=1000.
To have a bike on campus, register it with the MSU Police online at http://olice.msu.edu/bikeinfo.asp.
To register your bike, you must have the bike serial number.
•
The most common location for the serial number is on the underside of the frame, near the pedals.
•
You will also need to know the bike make, color and whether the style is male or female.
•
Upon registering your bike, you will be sent a bike permit sticker, which you must put on the bike.
CATA Bus System
The CATA bus system will take you around campus, and the Lansing and East Lansing areas.
•
You can purchase a bus pass at www.cata.org or pay each time you ride.
•
The CATA website also has route and late-night service information, and bus pass prices.
Zipcars
Zipcars are cars you can rent to travel around campus and the Lansing and East Lansing area.
•
You must have a Michigan driver’s license to rent a Zipcar.
•
After you register online, you can reserve a Zipcar, let yourself in with your Zipcard and drive for low hourly and daily rates.
•
Zipcars always include gas and insurance.
•
For more information and to register for a car, visit www.zipcar.com/msu.
Working On Campus
Whether you are considering employment during your time at MSU or afterwards, it is important to work with both the Office for International Students and Scholars (OISS), as well as the Career Services Network at MSU.
Go online to http://oiss.isp.msu.edu/students_employ.php and read the “Employing an International Student” document for many of the work authorization options available for international students.
You may also give this document to prospective employers who may be unfamiliar with international student employment permissions.
