From your principals...
It has been an exciting first quarter at Midvale-Lincoln, with field trips,
outdoor learning, awards, the construction of an outdoor learning lab at
Lincoln, plans for an addition at Midvale, assessments, and of course
classroom instruction! Our staffs have been hopping to meet the needs
of our children. With routines in place, students are now moving into
some of the most intense learning months of the year.
The Midvale-Lincoln staff is committed to providing students with continuity in their learning from grade to grade and building to building,
4K through grade 5. On November 14, staff members spent the morning
learning and working together. During this professional development
time, all staff had an opportunity to learn about literacy, mathematics,
outdoor learning, the community, and wellness. Please contact us if you

My educational philosophy embodies the growth and development of all students in the areas of

Un mensaje de las Directoras…
Hemos tenido un inicio de año escolar muy emocionante en MidvaleLincoln, con paseos, aprendizaje al aire libre, premios, la creación de un
laboratorio al aire libre en Lincoln, un proyecto para una expansión de
las instalaciones de Midvale, evaluaciones, y por supuesto aprendizaje
en las aulas de clase! El personal de ambas escuelas ha sido muy dinámico en satisfacer las necesidades de nuestros alumnos. Ahora, con
nuestra rutina bien establecida, empezamos los meses más intensos de
aprendizaje.
El personal de Midvale-Lincoln toma muy en serio el compromiso de
asegurar una continuidad en el aprendizaje desde 4K hasta 5to grado.
El día viernes 14 de noviembre de dedicó al desarrollo profesional, y el
personal pasó la mañana trabajando y aprendiendo juntos sobre temas

Challenging and interesting playground equipment allows children
to: engage in independent and
social play, improve balance and
gravity, create imaginary games of
cooking or chasing, build their
strength, and move in new ways. A

chance to exert energy, which

Hispanic Heritage Month Celebrations at Midvale

For the first time, all of Midvale celebrated Hispanic heritage. Teaching
and administrative staff organized guests from the community to visit
classrooms. Special guests included Salvador Carranza, an educator
from UW-Madison who has visited us every year for the past few years;
Oscar Mireles, director of Omega School who just published the book I
Didn’t Know There Were Latinos in Wisconsin; and Michael Flores,
MMSD school board member.
Some teachers also invited Hispanic families to share their culture and
discuss their experiences in the United States. The presence of singer
and bilingual educator José Luis Orozco made the festivities even better. He delighted us with a beautiful children´s music concert and actively involved the school staff. Many classes took advantage of his visit
to make cards, write letters, and complete special projects for José Luis
Orozco. Midvale´s goal this year is to celebrate cultural diversity at the
school, not only with teachers, but with children and their families as
well.

Celebración de la herencia hispana en la escuela Midvale
por Flor Mitchell y Sarah Thomas
Por primera vez toda la escuela Midvale celebró la herencia hispana. El
personal docente y administrativo se organizó para traer invitados de la
comunidad hispana a visitar los salones. Entre los invitados destacaron
Salvador Carranza, que es un educador de la UW-Madison y que ya viene
años visitándonos, Oscar Mireles que es director de la escuela Omega y
que acaba de publicar el libro “Había latinos en Wisconsin,” así como
también Michael Flores, representante de la junta directiva del distrito
escolar. Algunos maestros también continuaron invitando a familias hispanas para compartir su cultura y experiencia en los EEUU. Algo que
ayudó a festejar aún más esta celebración fue la presencia del cantante y
educador bilingüe José Luis Orozco. El nos deleitó con un hermoso concierto de música infantil en el que los niños y el personal de la escuela
participo activamente. Muchas de las clases aprovecharon está visita para
hacer tarjetas, escribir cartas y libros y preparar detalles especiales para
José Luis Orozco. El personal de la escuela Midvale tiene como meta este
año celebrar la diversidad cultural en la escuela, no solo de nuestros
maestros sino también de nuestros niños y sus familias.

Lincoln fourth grade teacher, Josie Guiney Igielski (Ms. Guiney), has recently won
the prestigious Milken Educator award, which came with a lot of publicity, and $25,000! She was one of only forty in the country to receive the award. As
her former student, I got the chance to interview her, and ask her these questions:
Do you think it's kind of creepy how people were researching you in
secret?
It was a very weird feeling to know that people were "researching" me. But I think it
is really awesome that there is an organization looking for excellence in teaching. So
many teachers do amazing work and never get the recognition that they deserve. I
feel 99% honored and 1% creeped out.
What motivates you to be such a good teacher?

Otorgan premio prestigioso a maestra de Lincoln

Una maestra de 4to grado de Lincoln, Josie Guiney Igielski (Ms. Guiney) ha ganado el Milken Educator Award, un premio prestigioso que solo se otorga a 40
maestros por todo el país. Además de mucho renombre, el premio también consiste en $25,000! Como ex alumna de Ms. Guiney, tuve la oportunidad de entrevistarla y preguntarle las siguientes preguntas:
Como se siente el hecho de que habían personas investigándola
en secreto?
Me sentía muy rara sabiendo que había gente investigándome. Pero al mismo
tiempo, pienso que es maravilloso que exista una organización que busca la excelencia en la pedagogía. Hay tantos maestros que hacen un trabajo estupendo y
nunca reciben la distinción que merecen. Entonces me sentí honrada en un 99% y
rara en un 1%.
Que es lo que le motiva a ser una maestra tan excelente?
Me encanta ser maestra porque es un trabajo que me permite hacer todo lo que
amo: leer libros, ser científica, divertirme, conocer nuevas personas, aprender nuevas maneras de pensar en los mismos problemas de siempre, contar cuentos, y
reírme con los niños. Los niños cuentan los mejores chistes y comparten cosas
realmente maravillosas de sí mismo. También trabajo con colegas muy solidarios
en Lincoln. Es difícil lograr mucho sin un buen equipo con quien apoyarse y resolver problemas.
Porque se hizo maestra?
Siempre hubo en mí el deseo de ser maestra. Mi madre y mi abuela han sido una
gran inspiración en mi vida. Las dos eran maestras y me enseñaron que educar es
divertido y que los niños son grandes pensadores.
Hay algún proyecto que le gustaría llevar a cabo en el futuro?
Me encantaría crear más hábitats silvestres en el Laboratorio de Aprendizaje al
Aire Libre de Lincoln. Y me siento muy entusiasmada con la instalación de los
puntos de ejercicio a lo largo del Camino de Bienestar que se llevara a cabo esta
primavera.
Que es lo que más disfruta de ser maestra?
Ver cómo crecen los niños a lo largo del año escolar, y cuando me vienen a visitar

How do you incorporate the environment/nature in your
curriculum?
I try to find little ways to make sure kids see connections between themselves and the
world around them. Like going outside to notice and record specific things, like birding. Experimenting with environments to show kids that we can have good and bad
effects on our planet, like in our terrarium projects. Bringing in news articles that
show how grown-ups make decisions about our environment and what effects those
decisions have on us. Getting out and enjoying the beauty of the world and asking kids
to wonder why and wonder how things work.
What is your favorite subject to teach?
Very hard question... I love projects that include lots of subjects all at once. My favorite thing is to get kids excited about a topic and then explore the possibilities.
Where did you get your education?
I am a very proud Badger! I went to UW Madison for my undergraduate degree in
teaching and for my Master’s degree in English as a Second Language teaching. I also
attended Edgewood College and received a Master’s certificate in Sustainability Leadership.

Did a teacher inspire you to become a teacher? How do you think others
have helped you in becoming such an awesome teacher?
My Mom and grandma of course. But, my mentor Mary Klehr, my co-teachers Kari
Petre, Emily Kornell, Jake Blomquist, my coach Kelly Jones, and my principal Deb
Hoffman inspire me every day to keep on teaching, laughing, and growing. My garden
inspiration comes from Clare Seguin. My birding inspiration comes from Laurie Solchenberger. My mindfulness and wellness inspiration comes from Lori Gustafson. My
love of books is inspired by Eileen Dawson, Mar Jensen, and that tall guy in the Lincoln LMC. I am inspired by the big hearts and thoughtfulness of all of the teachers at
Lincoln, and my Kindergarten teammates from Midvale. Lincoln is also lucky to have
a great staff of SEAs, BRSs and EAs that make the work of a classroom teacher doable.
Being a teacher is not a job you can do alone. That is one of the many reasons I love
this job.
Do you have any plans on how to use the money?
Almost all of the money will go towards Tillie's education fund.
Had you heard of this award before you received it?

I had heard of it, but I didn't know exactly why/how it was awarded. I didn't know
that Ms. Hoffman had won it 14 years ago. At the assembly I thought that Ms. Hoffman would be the one to receive the award, which made it all the more shocking when
it was me.

Desde cuanto tiempo es maestra?
Nueve años: 3 enseñando kínder en Midvale, y 6 enseñando 4to grado en Lincoln.

Soy una Badger muy orgullosa! En la UW saqué mi licenciatura en pedagogía y también mi maestría en la Enseñanza del Inglés como Segundo Idioma. Además, he recibido un certificado de maestría en Liderazgo en la Sostenibilidad de Edgewood College.

Trato de buscar pequeñas maneras de asegurar que los alumnos entienden la relación
entre ellos mismos y el mundo alrededor. Por ejemplo: salir afuera y tomar nota de
algo específico, como la observación de aves; realizar un experimento en el medio
ambiente para enseñarles a los niños como podemos impactar nuestro planeta de
manera positiva o negativa, como lo hacemos con nuestro proyecto de terrarios; traer
a la clase artículos del periódico que demuestran como los adultos toman decisiones

Parent Empowerment Groups Invite Wright Middle School
Groups for Joint Discussion

All three parent empowerment groups
(PEGs) have gotten off to an active start
this fall. In an effort to better connect
with other Nepali and African American
families, the Midvale-Lincoln Nepali
and Parents of African American Student (PAAS) groups invited families
from Wright Middle School to join the
October meetings. The principals of
both schools, Angie Crawford (Wright)
and Deb Hoffman (Lincoln), discussed
their visions for the groups. In addition,
long-time parent and PAAS group
founder Daphne Daniels added her perspective to the PAAS group.
As in the past, PEG members generate
the topics that the groups address. The
Latino PEG met earlier this fall. Parents
filled out and attached magnets to cards
containing important school information, which will make it easier for
families to access important school
phone numbers when needed.
The group also decided to address the
topics of bullying and school security at
the next meeting, which will be held on
December 2, 2014.
All three PEGs are grateful to the PTO
for their support. The goals of the PEGs
are to:

advocate for their children at school
and in the community to promote student achievement;

Science and Outdoor Clubs

Solar Club
The Solar Club is a fourth-and-fifth
grade club that meets every Friday afternoon. The club's focus is solar technology--how it works and how it can be
applied, specifically here at Lincoln. We
had a visit from solar expert Chris Collins, who works for H&H Solar Energy
Services here in Madison. He brought in
a solar photovoltaic panel and explained how it works. He also showed
us a solar pathfinder and demonstrated
how it is used to assess a site's suitability for solar technology. We went out to
our new Outdoor Learning Lab and
found out that its roof is a great spot for
some solar panels. Stay tuned for more!
Green Flag Clubs
Every Wednesday--weather permitting-all Lincoln students now have the option of working in the school garden
during their lunch recess.
We have a lot of work to do to get the
garden cleaned up and ready for fall,
and piles of soil left from the construction to move onto the garden beds.
There are many plants still living, and
interesting things to learn about.
It's great to have a time when interested
students can be in the garden and get to
know it better. We'll stay out there
working on things until snow flies--then
it will morph into the Ski Club!
Ski Club
Lincoln is fortunate to have a partnership with the Central Cross Country Ski
Association and the Madison Nordic Ski
Club. This year we applied for and received a Healthy Classroom Foundation
Grant that will provide us with fabulous
new universal-fit skis for our students'
use. Students will learn how to use the
skis during their REACH classes, and
will also have the opportunity to use
them during Wednesday recesses, and
possibly other times of day. If you're
interested in helping with this, please

Los tres grupos de empoderamiento de
padres de familia (PEG, pos sus siglas en
inglés) han sido muy activos desde el
inicio del año escolar. Con el propósito
de fortalecer los enlaces entre familias
nepalís y afro-americanas, el Grupo Nepalí de Midvale-Lincoln y los Padres de
Alumnos Afro-Americanos invitaron a
las familias nepalís y afro-americanas
de Wright Middle School a participar en
sus reuniones en el mes de octubre. Las
directoras de Lincoln y Wright, Deb
Hoffman y Angie Crawford, presentaron
sus visiones para los grupos. Daphne
Daniels, fundadora del grupo de Padres
de Alumnos Afro-Americanos, también
presentó su perspectiva.
Los temas de la reunión son determinados por los miembros de los PEG. El
PEG Latino se reunió anteriormente.
Los participantes llenaron tarjetas magnéticas con datos importantes de las
escuelas para facilitar la comunicación
entre las familias y sus escuelas. La siguiente reunión tendrá lugar el 2 de diciembre y tocara los temas de bullying y
seguridad.

Clubs de Ciencia y al Aire Libre

Club Solar
El Club Solar consiste en alumnos de 4to y
5to grado y se reúna los viernes por la
tarde. Se enfoca en la tecnología solar –
como funciona y como aplicarla, específicamente como aplicarla en Lincoln. El señor
Chris Collins de la compañía H&H Solar
Energy Services aquí en Madison, visitó al
club. Trajo un panel solar fotovoltaico y
explicó cómo funciona. También trajo una
sonda solar y demostró cómo usarla para
evaluar el potencial solar de un sitio. El
club descubrió que el techo del Laboratorio
de Aprendizaje al Aire Libre es un sitio
excelente para la instalación de paneles
solares.
Club de Bandera Verde
Cada miércoles – si lo permita el clima –
los alumnos de Lincoln pueden optar por
trabajar en el jardin de la escuela durante
el recreo del almuerzo. Hay mucho trabajo
por hacer, como limpiar el jardin, prepáralo para el otoño y mover al jardin la tierra
que sobró de la construcción. Aún hay
muchas plantas vivas, y muchas cosas interesantes por aprender. Es una excelente
oportunidad para que los alumnos dis-
fruten del jardin y lo conozcan
mejor. Estaremos trabajando en el
jardin hasta que caiga la primera
nevada!
Club Esqui
En Lincoln somos muy afortunados
de trabajar en conjunto con la Central Cross Country Ski Association y
el Madison Nordic Ski Club. Este
año hemos recibido una donación de
la Healthy Classroom Foundation de
unos esquís de fondo para el uso de
los alumnos. Los niños aprenderán a
usar los esquís en sus clases de
REACH, y tendrán la oportunidad de
usarlos durante el recreo los miércoles, y posiblemente en otros momentos del día. Si le interesa ayudar
con esta actividad, favor comunicarse conmigo.

Let’s Improve Traffic near Midvale!
The street in front of the school (Caromar Drive) can be dangerous for
children during arrival and dismissal. We are developing a traffic safety
guide to help parents understand where they can legally park or drop off
children. In the meantime, here are several ways you can help ensure
the safety of all children:
Have your children walk, bike, or
take the bus
Thank you for reducing the number of
vehicles outside the school! When your
child walks, they enjoy exercise and fresh
air. If you cannot walk your child yourself, ask a neighbor who is already walking with their children to take your child. When your child takes the
bus, they develop a sense of independence and enjoy social time with
their friends.
If you drive, use the new parking areas on Midvale Boulevard
Parking will soon be allowed on Midvale Boulevard next to the playground and baseball field.
You will be able to park for short periods next to the playground, uphill
(south) from the crossing guard. In the morning, you can watch from
your car as your child joins friends on the playground. You can also
park here in the afternoons and walk to pick up your child.
You will be able to park all day next to the baseball diamond, downhill
(north) from the crossing guard.
If you drive, do not drop your child off in the “No Stopping,
Standing, or Parking” areas directly across from the school’s
main entrance (on the east side of Caromar Drive).
The street in front of the school is very narrow, and there is not enough
room for fire trucks to get through when cars are parked on both sides.
Low visibility makes walking across mid-block dangerous; our crossing
guard has noticed more families crossing here and is worried that a
child will be hurt. Please model safe behavior for your child and cross
only at the crosswalk!

Mejoremos el tráfico cerca de Midvale!
La calle que pasa en frente de la escuela (Caromar Drive) puede ser un lugar
muy peligroso para los niños durante la llegada en la mañana y la salida en la
tarde. Estamos elaborando un guía para la seguridad vial para aclarar donde
las familias pueden estacionarse legalmente o dejar a sus hijos. Mientras tanto, hay varias maneras que todos podemos asegurar la seguridad de dodos
nuestros niños:
Mandar a sus hijos a pie, en bici o en
bus
Gracias por reducir el número de vehículos
cerca de la escuela! Cuando sus hijos caminan, disfrutan del ejercicio y del aire libre.
Si no puede acompañar personalmente a su
hijo mientras camine a la escuela, pida el
favor a un vecino que también camina con
sus hijos a la escuela. Cuando los niños
toman el bus, aprenden a ser más independientes y disfrutan de momentos sociales con sus amigos.
Si llega en carro, aproveche de las nuevas zonas de
estacionamiento en Midvale Boulevard
Muy pronto, las familias podrán estacionarse en Midvale Boulevard a lo largo
del patio de recreo y la cancha de beisbol.

Habrá parqueo por un maximo de 10 minutos a lo largo del patio de recreo hacia el sur (cuesta arriba) de la persona encargada de ayudar a los
niños a cruzar la calle. En la mañana puede observar desde su vehiculo
hasta que su hijo llegue al patio de recreo. En la tarde puede estacionarse
aquí para recoger a su hijo.

Habrá parqueo todo el dia a lo largo de la cancha de beisbol hacia el norte
(cuesta abajo) del paso de peatones.
Si llega en carro, evite dejar a su hijo directamente en frente de la
entrada de la escuela (en el lado este de Caromar Drive) donde se
encuentran los rótulos “No Stopping, Standing, or Parking”
La calle en frente de la escuela es muy angosta y no hay suficiente espacio
para que pasen los camiones de los bomberos si hay vehículos estacionados en
ambos lados. La persona encargada de ayudar a los niños a cruzar la calle ha
notado un incremento un el numero de familias cruzando en medio de la cuadra, donde hay poca visibilidad. Por favor seamos un ejemplo de seguridad
para nuestros hijos y cruzemos unicamente en el paso de peatones.
