The Willow Fund
Remember that cute
bull terrier pup named
Willow? Many of you
donated to her surgery
costs when she came to us with a badly damaged leg last summer. Her wonderful new pet
parent generously donated the surgery costs, so
in honor of all of you who donated, your donations were put into a fund named after Willow.
People always ask us “how is Willow doing?” She’s doing just fine and her new pet
parent says “she’s the best dog I’ve ever had
and you’re not getting her back!” How is the
Willow Fund doing? It’s doing pretty well, too.
It’s Raining Kittens,
Everyone is familiar with the
four seasons: summer, fall, winter,
spring; at Animal Protectors we have a 5th
season - kitten season! Usually starting in
early spring and lasting through mid-summer we are inundated with kittens, kittens,
and more kittens. Some come with their
mothers, most don’t. Some are healthy, some
are not. Some are injured and need surgery.
All need routine medical care and lots of
love. Our fosters are very busy and so is our
medical team. Every kitten has to be tested,
wormed, given the appropriate shots at the
right age, and spayed or neutered. This year
will be just as busy as the last season. Even
before this newsletter has hit your mailbox,
we’ve had two litters come into the shelter
already!
We urgently need from you, our generous
The Willow Fund
There is roughly $1,000
in the fund, which will be
used to fund any animal
that finds its way to our shelter in need of emergency medical care and/or surgery.
While $1,000 is a great start, emergency care
is often much more. If you would like to donate
to help future medical emergencies, give to the
Willow Fund. Visit our web site for online donations and select “Willow Fund” under “Program,” or send your donation to Animal Protectors of Allegheny Valley, 533 Linden Avenue,
New Kensington, PA 15068. Please write “Willow Fund” in the memo.
Kittens, Kittens
supporters, monetary donations to help defray medical expenses. We also need foster
homes and items on our Wish List like
kitty litter, newspaper, litter boxes, and
cat food. Think of it as a baby shower
for kittens! Through your support, we
are able to help these little ones grow
and find their loving forever homes.
To make your donation, please stop
by the shelter during open hours:
Monday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday 1 p.m.-4 p.m., and
Tuesday and Thursday 6 p.m.-8 p.m.
You may also mail a donation to Animal Protectors, 533 Linden Avenue, New Kensington, PA 15068 or visit our website and click
on “Donate” where you will be directed to our
JustGive donation page.

Maximize Your Gift!
PITTSBURGH - DAY OF GIVING - MAY 6, 2014
Donate at:
How would you like to make a donation to Animal Protectors and a portion of it be matched – this guarantees even more funds to benefit our waiting animals! It’s easy to have your gift matched on the annual Westmoreland
Gives Day of Giving. This special day, hosted by the Pittsburgh Foundation,
will be held on Tuesday, May 6 from 6 a.m. to midnight.
To donate, visit www.pittsburghgives.org. Gifts will only be matched on
May 6.
Last year you, our generous supporters, helped us to raise more than $3600
on this one day, we hope to exceed this amount in 2014 to help as many
animals as possible! ALL proceeds benefit the cats and dogs at our shelter.
Junior Ambassadors Find Creative Ways to Help.
You can never be too young or too old to help the
shelter! No matter what your age and ability, there is
always something you can do to help our animals in
need.
A perfect example is how our junior supporters
come up with creative ways to donate supplies and
funds to the shelter. We are always grateful for these
“little” ambassadors and their desire to help our animals live well while in our care.
We’d like to send a special thank you to Sophia
Trapani who recently donated funds and a car load of
supplies from her birthday party. Sophia decided that
she had “a lot of things” and didn’t need anything else.
She decided that she would have a birthday party and
ask for donations for our shelter. Sophia declared, “the
dogs and cats need it more than I do.”
With that, Sophia set a goal. She wanted to raise
enough money to sponsor one cat cage and one dog
cage for the year. She asked her friends and family
members to purchase items from the shelter Wish List
or to make a cash donation in honor of her birthday
celebration. Boy, was Sophia surprised at the success!
She collected $215.00 in
her donation jar and exceeded her goal – she could
now sponsor a cat and dog
cage! The extra donations
went to the general fund
to help with supplies, food,
medication and more.
Sophia’s mom Amy says,
“Through her selflessness,
Sophia has learned what it
means to be appreciative of the things she has and
now she knows what it feels like to give with a grateful heart. She’s now encouraging others to give back.”
Thank you to Sophia and to all of our junior supporters! Your dedication does not go unnoticed!
From Heartbreak to Happiness...
“After my Kitty had passed, I stopped
in at Animal Protectors to donate
some of her things. As I was standing
there, Georgie reached out of his cage
and patted me on the back. When I
turned around and saw him and his
brother Geno, I just knew I had to have
them! So, I adopted them and they both bonded with my Hunter
who was my husband’s hunting dog that I had inherited when my
husband passed.
Two days after Christmas 2012, after 4 wonderful years with
him, I had to have my baby Hunter put to sleep. I was crushed
and swore I would never get another dog. I once again headed
to the shelter to donate some of Hunter’s things, and
when I walked through the door with my great niece
and great nephew, they spied Boo (then known as
2
Singer) sitting by the door. They both instantly fell in love with him! I held him
and found out that there were 2 couples
that had put in applications to adopt him,
but the kids talked me into filling out the
application anyhow.
A couple of days went by and then I got
the call that if I still wanted Boo, he was
mine! I have to admit that for about the first 6 months it was tough.
He chewed everything, including me! And when everyone told me
that I needed to take him back, that he was too much to handle, my
only thought was that there was no way I could give up on him, he
deserved more of a chance than that!
So here we are, 1 year later, and he is still a handful, but I just love
him. When it’s just me and him, he can never snuggle close enough
or give enough kisses!”

…that last month, Animal Protectors paid over
$1,527 in utilities? This includes water,
electric, heat, phone, internet and more.
All of these things are essential to keeping
our shelter running strong. All of these
expenses add up and become a great
cost for our small shelter.
!
If you’d like to donate to the daily cost of
running the shelter, you may send your
donation in the enclosed envelope. Be
sure to mark “general fund” on your
donation. Donations are also accepted
online by visiting www.animalprotectors.net and clicking “Donate.” Once
on JustGive, our online donation site,

“I was surrendered by my owners with a
medical mystery, and found out I have to
eat special food for the rest of my life. I
am caged, but get ‘recess’ to play with my
other feline friends in the cat room.
Cadance came to us as a stray in terrible
condition, rescued by a caring person. She
has recovered and has proven to be a sweet
cat with a cute habit of drinking water
from her cupped paw. She is quiet, tolerates other cats and loves being petted.
“You can call me your fool . . . I only wanna
be with you.” Hootie (minus the Blowfish)
loves the lyrics to this famous band’s big
hit “Only Wanna Be With You” because
that’s what he wants - to be with you! This
big guy is super sweet and lovable.

Kita was displaced when her owner moved
out of state. She is declawed and has lived
with another cat and a small dog. She is a
little shy, but quickly relaxes when she is
greeted with a soft voice and a pat on the
head. A great cat looking for a safe haven.
Little Paprika looks like a kitten, but she’s
actually a young adult. She came to us
from the streets, skinny and dirty. She has
shown great improvement very quickly.
She’s ready to spice up your life!
Woody is our senior boy, rescued from a life
in the woods (thus the name). He came to
us extremely thin, obviously scrounging for
scraps of food for some time. He is a real
cuddle-bug, looking for a good diet, a warm
lap, and someone to love him forever.

How could you not love a face like Vinnie’s? Those sparkling eyes, that cute little
orange nose, that bold tabby M on his
forehead! Not only does he have leading
man good looks, he has the personality to
match. He’s star quality.
It’s always good to look at the world from
a new point of view . . . like Nike, looking at the world a little upside down! Nike
loves to roll on his back, purr super loud,
lick your hand, and basically just do it!
Swoosh!
Diego was abandoned with his pal Pretty.
Pretty is on her way to a new home, even
though Diego is more outgoing. He is a
very exotic looking kitty with very striking
features. Diego is hoping he, like his pal
Pretty, will get a home soon.

Deja loves to play ball and is good at walking on a leash. She is crate trained and
gets along well with cats. Deja can’t wait
for her new forever home, giving her that
feeling that “I’ve been here before and this
is where I’ll stay.”
Rilo sits on command and walks well
on leash. Animal Protector staff thinks
he will get a little bigger...however, their
opinion is he will get more wide than tall.
Rilo is looking for someone to give him a
forever home. Is that someone you?
Dim was blessed with the typical traits of
a labrador retriever - carefree, fun-loving
and a real people lover. You can’t help but
love this happy-go-lucky guy. If you’re
looking for a walking/running partner,
Dim may be your man!

Hardy’s owner lost her home and was forced to bring him to Animal Protectors, where he was
originally adopted. But, not only Hardy. . . his sister, Maggie also found herself at the shelter.
Sweet Maggie is in foster care with one of our shelter employees, who has fallen in love with
her and most likely will adopt her. That leaves Hardy behind, still looking for that perfect
match. Hardy prefers a home without cats, but would fit into a home with another dog. Hardy
is current on shots, walks well on a leash and knows some basic commands.
Haze had a family for the first two years of
her life, but her owner sadly realized that
his busy lifestyle wasn’t fair to Haze. She
is looking for an active home with someone who will help her burn off her energy
with walks and a lot of play time.

Lager had mast cell cancer and underwent
a successful surgery. Lager’s vet reports
that he has “a favorable prognosis with a
low rate of recurrence.” If you have room
in your heart, Lager will fill that space
with love and devotion.
Sosa was adopted several months ago. However, his new owner became very ill and had
to bring him back. His owner describes him
as friendly, gentle and curious. His favorite
things are getting a bath, riding in a car,
playing outside and going for walks.
Red Baron loves to run around the play yard
with a plastic ball, and once he has it, he plays
catch me if you can. Red Baron will need an
owner who is willing to go through training classes with him; once he has learned his
manners, there is no end to his possibilities!
