Box 302 Charlottetown, PE C1A 7K7 TOBACCO - FREE POLICY FOR INDOOR AND OUTDOOR FACILITIES The Town of Stratford recognizes that exposure of non-smokers to tobacco smoke (passive smoking) is hazardous to health and that non-smokers should be protected. Passive smoking can lead to serious illnesses in adults, such as bronchitis, lung cancer and cardiovascular disease. Children can also develop chest illnesses and asthma from exposure to tobacco smoke. The Town of Stratford also recognizes that the use of tobacco in any form is harmful to the user. The use of spit tobacco (snuff, chew, plug, etc.) has severe health risks. Spit tobacco usage is known to cause serious illnesses such as cancers of the throat and mouth, leukoplakia, gum and tooth disease and loss of bone in jaw. It is also understood that children and young adults do not recognize the health hazards of spit tobacco as commonly as the threats of smoking. Accordingly, the following policy has been developed by the Town of Stratford to protect the health of all concerned with an emphasis is place on children. Children who are in frequent contact with adults who smoke are also more likely to become smokers themselves. All Properties & facilities owned by the Town are designated tobacco-free as of October 1, 2007. 8 The Town of Stratford’s Youth Centre! Building the best community possible www.townofstratford.ca 9 Stratford Area Watershed Group Becoming a Member Just Got a little Easier! Residents and businesses within Stratford and area watersheds have been tremendously supportive of our projects and events over the last 6 years; the very essence of a local group is its dedicated members. So we are making membership easier by providing residents and businesses the opportunity to pay for an annual membership via PayPal. Visit our website, go to membership under the SAWIG heading, and click your way to a very important contribution for a local non-profit organization! We will continue to provide environmental programs, and with your support we hope to increase our presence in the communities in which we serve. For further information, please contact Kelley at 902-367-3605 or [email protected]. Build-a-Birdhouse Event This winter, the Stratford Area Watershed Improvement Group is hosting a series called “Building Better Backyards for Birds”. Birds are amazing creatures who often have a difficult time in increasingly urban areas, with decreased food sources and declining environmental quality. SAWIG is trying to make it a little easier for birds in the area, by helping to provide them with places to feed, nest, and attain water. Our next event in this series is “Build-a-Birdfeeder” on Saturday, April 11 from 9:30-11:30am at the Stratford Town Centre. Families and birders alike are all invited to assemble a wooden birdbox to help give a local tree swallow family a place to nest in spring. Due to limited space, pre-registration is required. Please contact Kelley Arnold, Watershed Coordinator, at 902-367-3605 or at [email protected] for further information on this and upcoming SAWIG events. 10 Billy Ramsay and Kelley Arnold are gearing up for Waterscool! During Stratford Water Week, May 11-15, Grade 5 students from Stratford Elementary and other local schools will attend this interactive, activity-based program aimed at teaching youth about water conservation and watersheds. Kids who participate in this program learn not only how to conserve our precious water, but where it comes from. We can’t wait to see you in May! Community Garden There may be a lot of snow on the ground, but the Town and watershed group are thinking of Spring. We are currently taking renewals from existing community gardeners, but if you have an interest in renting a plot, please contact Kelley Arnold, watershed coordinator and community garden manager, at 902-367-3605 to put your name on the waiting list. We are also actively seeking gardeners to sit on the community garden committee, please contact Kelley for further information or to express your interest.
