Here visitors can turn back the pages of time to enjoy a simpler life where no one hurries, and no one hurries you. A place where everyone is special and everyone is welcome. Recently the National Trust for Historic Preservation selected Saugatuck/Douglas as one of the “Dozen Distinctive Destinations” in the U.S. and the writers and editors of Midwest Living magazine ranked Saugatuck/ Douglas fifth among the top 100 vacation destinations in the Midwest. While visiting either downtown area, you can walk – in a safe and friendly environment – to almost everything. In Saugatuck, you can stroll along the boardwalk admiring the boats and explore the dockside shops. Picnic by a gazebo overlooking the harbor then ride the Victorian hand-cranked ferry to visit our historic museum or climb Mount Baldhead. You can rent a canoe, paddle board, kayak, charter a sailboat or tour our waterways onboard an old-fashioned sternwheeler or WWII amphibious “Duck.” End your excursion at the corner drug store soda fountain where hand-creamed sodas and malted shakes have been a specialty for more than 100 years! Just across the river, Douglas is the perfect place to explore historical buildings such as the Old Schoolhouse, Dutcher Lodge, the library and various churches and residences which have been restored to enhance their 19th century charm while still serving our community. Shopping in downtown Douglas is a pleasure too, whether you’re looking for fine art, home accessories, retro collectables, or hard to find children’s toys and rare books. Douglas is also home to the area’s first microbrewery, a do-it-yourself Art Barn and West Michigan’s largest Antique Pavilion. Shop a little, eat a little, relax a lot. For over a century, artists have been drawn to the area’s towering dunes, pristine beaches and natural splendors of this jewel-like setting on Lake Michigan’s eastern shore. Today that artistic heritage persists through strong ties to the Art Institute of Chicago with its affiliated summer school at Ox-Bow as well as a broad spectrum of art galleries and art-based activities and events. Consistently named one of America’s top 25 arts destinations, it’s no wonder the area has become known as “The Art Coast ™ of Michigan”! You’ll find great lodging options in modern, privately-owned motels, cottages, suites and charming retro auto courts. Or, if you prefer a country inn, our “Bed and Breakfast Capital of the Midwest” offers an extensive variety of historic accommodations. Regardless of your preference, travelers are always treated like friends of the family! Golf enthusiasts can hit the links at one of our two 18-hole championship golf courses while the kids take sailing lessons or an art class. And don’t leave without taking the family on a thrilling dune buggy ride! Blending so many attractions you can easily create your own “masterpiece” vacation. It’s easy to understand why Michigan’s governor named Saugatuck one of Michigan’s 19 “Coolest Cities.” The town’s Oval Beach is ranked one of the top 25 beaches in the world by Condé Nast Traveler and one of the top two in the USA by National Geographic Traveler. More recently, the Chicago Tribune rated it number one out of the Midwest’s five best beaches and USA Today readers voted us the #1 Weekend Getaway in the USA. Saugatuck Center for the Arts provides uptown theatre in downtown Saugatuck all summer long. Cultural performances, classes and workshops abound there year ‘round. Our Chamber Music Festival and frequent jazz concerts highlight a topflight eclectic music scene. Through the Lakeshore Arts Alliance community theatre blossoms. Outdoor art shows, gallery openings and culinary events add extra spice to the Saugatuck/ Douglas recipe for fun. Our lakeshore community offers a place to rest or play any time of the year. Whether you come for an executive retreat, a corporate meeting, a family reunion or your own romantic getaway vacation, you’ll be glad you discovered the treasure that is Saugatuck and Douglas. See you soon! Sincerely, Felicia V. Fairchild, Executive Director Saugatuck/Douglas Convention & Visitors Bureau 269-857-1701 • www.saugatuck.com Photo Credit: Ted Swoboda Dear Visitor, NOMINEE “Coolest Small Town in America” Top Four Designation NATIONAL TRUST DOZEN DISTINCTIVE DESTINATIONS www.saugatuck.com | 7 The Art of Being Saugatuck/Douglas I 8 | Saugatuck/Douglas Visitors Guide n Saugatuck, Michigan, art is far more than an aspect of cultural enrichment, more than a source of passive entertainment. In Saugatuck and Douglas, art is life. Both Saugatuck and Douglas celebrate the belief of Gustave Flaubert that “Art has no other end, for people of feeling, than to conjure away the burden and bitterness.” Where else could one find public restrooms painted with post-impressionist Georges Seurat’s A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grand Jatte? Setting this tone is the natural environment. Saugatuck and Douglas are nestled near the shore of Lake Michigan and are defined by steep, rolling dunes to the west and lush, green orchard country to the east. The climate is blessed by the moderating effects of Lake Michigan. The lake’s cool breezes provide welcome refreshment on warm summer days, while during the winter it warms the frigid air sweeping into Michigan from the northern plains. It was to this idyllic setting that Chicago residents started escaping in the 1900s. As they arrived, they found a village that was already entering a second life. Saugatuck, and a sister community down the Kalamazoo River called Singapore, were settled in the mid-1800s by lumber interests. For many decades they supported a thriving mix of sawmills, planing mills, barrel factories and other wood product firms. The area contributed much of the lumber used to rebuild Chicago after the Great Fire of 1871. When the trees were gone, however, so were the lumbermen. Several mills were actually loaded aboard Great Lakes schooners to be transported elsewhere. The dearth of trees resulted in a particularly harsh fate for Saugatuck’s down-river neighbor. Without their presence as a windbreak, blowing sand gradually buried the village and today it lives on only in legend as the “Lost City of Singapore”. Saugatuck and Douglas survived, however, and their 19th century architecture legacy forms the basis for the area’s quaint charm today. The resort trade which had begun to emerge in the 1890s took a propitious turn in 1910 when a group of Chicago artists established the Summer School of Painting on Ox-Bow Lagoon in Saugatuck. Today, Ox-Bow is affiliated with the Art Institute of Chicago and offers a wide range of summer course work, including metalsmithing, printmaking, performance art, glassblowing, writing, ceramics, and of course, painting and drawing. The seed planted at Ox-Bow has flourished over the years. The area’s reputation as a sanctuary for artists is nationally known and has led to its status as the “Art Coast™ of Michigan” and one of the top 25 art destinations in the USA. Saugatuck and Douglas were two of only 28 communities nationwide to be awarded the “Preserve America Community” designation by the White House and the Historic Preservation Caucus of the U.S. House of Representatives. More recently the National Trust for Historic Preservation elected Saugatuck/Douglas to its prestigious list, the “Dozen Distinctive Destinations” in the U.S. The art of relaxation, the art of recreation, the art of learning, and the art of nature. All these are dimensions to the art of being Saugatuck/Douglas. www.saugatuck.com | 9 The Art of Relaxation 10 | Saugatuck/Douglas Visitors Guide The two resort towns of Saugatuck and Douglas are nestled among towering sand dunes, and are bordered by the winding Kalamazoo River on its way to Lake Michigan. Activities abound making this area the perfect place to relax and decompress! For more than 100 years, tourists have sought refuge from the stress of everyday life in the Saugatuck/Douglas area – a peaceful place where no one rushes and no one rushes you. Today the area’s ability to act as a natural tranquilizer is especially important in relieving the high anxiety caused by maddening traffic jams and hectic work schedules. Visitors to these neighboring resort towns can leave their tensions and stressful schedules behind. They can mellow out in surroundings reminiscent of vintage, small-town America, whose hallmarks are scenic beauty and a unique collection of shops, restaurants and art galleries. For those who want to mix relaxation with excitement, the area offers a yearround calendar of fun-filled activities and events (saugatuck.com). No wonder The National Trust for Historic Preservation designated these towns as one of the nation’s “Dozen Distinctive Destinations”; why Budget Travel ranked them among the top four “Coolest Small Towns in America”; and why readers of USA Today voted Saugatuck the number one weekend getaway in the US. The two towns, nestled among towering sand dunes, are bordered by the winding Kalamazoo River on its way to Lake Michigan. Activities abound on the two waterways. Both towns maintain public beaches on Lake Michigan for swimmers and sunbathers. Saugatuck’s Oval Beach has been rated by Condé Nast Traveler magazine as one of the 25 best shorelines in the world and one of America’s 11 great beach towns. National Geographic Traveler magazine agreed, rating it one of the top two freshwater beaches in America. More recently, the Chicago Tribune ranked it number one among the Midwest’s five best beaches and Life magazine judged it “Best Dune Town”. The newlyacquired Saugatuck Harbor Natural Area extends opportunities for hiking, bird-spotting and sun-basking along this idyllic, unspoiled coastline. A number of scenic city parks – two of them adorned by Victorian style gazebos – dot the riverside. They are unhurried spots where you can spend the day picnicking, reading or watching the sailboats slip by. An old-fashioned sternwheeler paddle boat shuttles passengers on tours of the river and along the Lake Michigan shoreline. These water-bound excursions are punctuated by cottages, extravagant homes, forests, wetlands, soaring bald eagles, a panorama of dunes, and the Ghost Town of Singapore. Visitors can enjoy an even more leisurely boat ride by hopping aboard North America’s only hand-cranked chain ferry for a trip across the river or board a WWII “Duck” that provides ferry service between Saugatuck and Douglas. Strolling along a winding boardwalk offers another impression of the river – home port to some 900 yachts and sailboats. Anglers can charter boats to go after salmon, trout, pike and perch. Those who want to make their own waves can rent boats, kayaks, canoes, paddle boards, jet skis, pontoons, and charter sailboats or yachts. Back on dry land, the adventuresome can climb 302 steps to the top of the Mt. Baldhead sand dune. For their heart-pounding effort climbers are rewarded with a stunning bird’s-eye view of the harbor and lake below. Another aerial view is in store for visitors who take a freewheeling ride on a converted pick-up truck, known as a “dune schooner”, across some of the towering sand hills. Back on level ground, the area has one private taxi service plus the Interurban bus. Both offer visitors hassle-free, door-to-door transportation. Bicycles – both motorized and self-pedaled – and scooters are available locally for rental. www.saugatuck.com | 11 12 | Saugatuck/Douglas Visitors Guide Saugatuck Dunes State Park Cross Country Ski Trails Oval Beach and Points of Interest Map TRAIL POST MARKINGS Green Arrowhead: Going to Lake Red Arrowhead: Return to Parking Two Colors on Post: Connecting Trail Blue Diamond: Walkway Confidence Marker TRAIL NAME COLOR North White Beach Yellow Livingston Red South Blue 13 15 20 17 LENGTH 4 2.5 miles 2.5 miles 2.5 miles 5.5 miles 12 23 28 ABILITY 26 33 5 21 A 29 Lake Michigan H 24 41 M = Most Difficult E = Easiest From I-96/US 31, take Exit 41–turning West onto Blue Star Hwy. Autumn also invites visitors to sample the fruits of labor from area berry patches and orchards in the rolling countryside. They can even taste the fine wine made by local vintners or sample artisan wines from around the world in a fine art gallery setting. Or enjoy farm-fresh pies at a local cider mill. As fall leaves drop ushering in winter, Saugatuck/ Douglas decks itself out in the spirit of Christmas by blanketing both downtowns with an array of twinkling lights which become the backdrop for a festive parade and a homespun rendition of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol which rounds out the wintertime entertainment schedule. Winter is also the time for invigorating cross-country skiing and cozy themed weekend packages promoted by area Bed & Breakfast Inns. Year ‘round, Saugatuck/Douglas is the place to unwind and mellow out – no longer just for Midwest tourists. Increasingly, the town’s fame as a “stress buster” is enticing visitors from around the world. For arts enthusiasts, the region boasts more than 35 art galleries, a chamber music festival and “uptown theatre in downtown Saugatuck” throughout the summer at the Saugatuck Center for the Arts. There are also year ‘round professional concerts and performances, plus a farmers’ market in-season on Fridays. The Lakeshore Arts Alliance highlights local talent and community theatre. Both arts venues provide numerous opportunities for hands-on creativity, lectures, concerts and other artistic programs. The public is also welcome to visit Ox-Bow, a summer school affiliated with the School of the Art Institute of Chicago on Friday nights throughout the summer, where students and staff open their studios for salon-style showcases, demonstrations and auctions. Saugatuck’s summertime events include art fairs, goldsmithing demonstrations, art gallery events, a Fourth of July Parade and Venetian Festival that concludes with a lighted boat parade and fireworks. Late in the summer, the area’s restaurants create their culinary best at the annual Savor The Art Coast (formerly Taste of Saugatuck). For those who prefer shopping as an activity, both villages offer a charming mix of 19th century architecture and 21st century merchandise. There are clothing, jewelry, gift, antique and home accessory shops galore. Area businesses run the gamut, from Douglas’ exclusive interior design shops to Saugatuck’s galleries and fashion boutiques. Hungry visitors have no problem finding a restaurant to suit their tastes. The area is home to well over two dozen eating establishments, serving continental, Greek, American, Mexican and Italian specialties. There are several area coffee shops and a variety of ice cream, pastry and fudge shops to satisfy the proverbial sweet tooth. Tourists are treated to the same diversity when it comes time to bed down for the night. They can choose from hip, retro designed auto-courts, motels, hotels, resorts, cottages, vacation rental condos and homes, and Bed & Breakfast Inns. With more than 30 bed and breakfasts in operation, the area has become renowned as the “Bed & Breakfast Capital of the Midwest.” Exclusive to autumn are make-your-own color tours of the area’s forests, the 39th Annual Gallery Stroll, several open house weekends by Blue Coast Artists, the Halloween festivities and one of the largest corn mazes anywhere! The Saugatuck Dunes are part of the largest assemblage of freshwater dunes on our planet. Created by glaciers thousands of years ago, they have been gracefully sculpted ever since by the contest of prevailing southwest winds, crashing waves, and freeze-and-thaw cycles with the stabilizing effects of stubborn and resilient native vegetation. The mountainous heaps of silvery-gold sand are ever-shifting with elemental forces that gradually build up, violently scoop out and blow down these dramatic parabolic dunes. The Saugatuck Harbor Natural Area, which borders Oval Beach (holder of many global “Best Beach” honors) was recently nominated in a competition for the 8th Wonder of the World on the heels of being designated as one of the eleven most endangered ecosystems in America by the National Trust for Historic Preservation. The Kalamazoo River’s harbor mouth, altered to aid 20th Century boat navigation, still survives as a natural greenway, much as it would have appeared to the native Potawatomi people five centuries ago. Towering above the scenic river channel loom forested dunes, the tallest of which, Mt. Baldhead, was the setting for Potawatomi ceremonial gatherings. Early European settlers cleared and built directly on the Lake Michigan shore, but after cutting down the trees (primarily to rebuild Chicago after the 1871 fire), they were forced to flee the site as the untethered sand literally buried the once-thriving lumber town of Singapore. Birders celebrate Saugatuck’s dunelands as a well-trafficked stop on the migratory tropical bird flyways. Sixty-seven of the over two hundred locally spotted bird species have a special status as rare, threatened or endangered including the Prairie Warbler which relies on one of the last stands of healthy Jack Pine trees for survival. Bald Eagles, Ospreys, Northern Harriers, Black Terns, Piping Plovers, various owls, hawks and entertaining waterfowl frequent these coastal waters and marshes. Fishing here is terrific! Some 102 varieties of fish live in the waters of the river and in Lake Michigan our “freshwater ocean.” Grill your catch at Oval Beach overlooking Lake Michigan after a thrilling day of charter fishing for king salmon or lake trout. Or just relax with a worm and a hook and snag some sunfish or blue gills with the kids. Since before the dinosaurs, the shy lake sturgeon have hidden in this river, too. Some are over a century old and eight feet long. Once counted by the millions, the few surviving sturgeon are slowly being restored to their coastal habitats. New Richmond’s sturgeon breeding station, a few hours paddle upriver, makes a great family outing. Independent float trips and guided kayak excursions begin there and end in Saugatuck Harbor. You can also paddle one direction and bike another to access the scenic countryside. Bring your own gear or rent everything you need from a local outfitter. Serious speed cyclists have a choice of routes including the old West Michigan Pike (Blue Star Highway-Route 31). The history and culture associated with the Pike played an important role in the development of tourism along the lakeshore. It was the first continuous hard surface road between Chicago and Mackinaw City and opened West Michigan to automobile tourism beginning in 1912. The West Michigan Pike corridor will certainly stimulate “nostalgia” travel as Michigan’s version of Route 66. The road meanders along the lakeshore passing through the area’s emerging historic strip with its hip retro designer Motor Inns, vintage diners, large antique pavilion, historical markers and one of the last Red Barn Theaters in the U.S. By foot, bike or waterway, explore on your own the web of paths, back roads and water trails which ramble along the lakeshore and its tributaries that converge in the Saugatuck-Douglas area. Trails pass by vineyards, U-Pick orchards, microbreweries, local farm produce stands, artists’ studios, horticultural nurseries, berry plantations and scores of nature preserves and state parks. The Pike is perfect for those who savor history at a leisurely pace with lots of stops along the way. If you prefer, leave the navigating to a local expert and enjoy a guided culinary tour or behind-the-scenes art studios tour. It is a craft gallery concentrating on custom creations in leather by two resident designers. Across the way on Culver St., Amazwi Contemporary Art features colorful paintings, extraordinary sculptures and fine crafts from Africa. Located just north of Saugatuck on Blue Star, you’ll find Marcia Perry Sculpture Studio, an intriguing nature-lover’s environment featuring sculptures hewn from trees and stone, carving workshops and the annual Goddess Show. Southeast of Saugatuck, a little farther out in the countryside, visit Khnemu Studio on Fernwood Farm where artist Dawn Soltysiak creates her uniquely beautiful pottery in a pastoral country setting, and hosts ceramic workshops in her solar-powered barn. On the road to Fennville, the Peachbelt Studio and Gallery is housed in an historic red brick one-room schoolhouse circa 1867 surrounded by farms, fields and orchards. Here artist Dawn Stafford creates brilliantly colored floral, still-life, landscape and other oil paintings. Also an area-wide cooperative called Blue Coast Artists sponsors popular open houses several times a year in participating artists studios that dot the countryside. There are also opportunities – particularly fun on rainy days – for visitors and families with children to create their own art at Express Yourself Art Barn, Ox-Bow and Saugatuck Center for the Arts. Brought together in one building, Saugatuck/Douglas’ artwork and artists would rival any major metropolitan gallery. But they are not in one building; rather, they must be sought out in the nooks and crannies of these charming rural villages that have not sold out to the homogeneity of modern times. The Art of Shopping If there is such a thing as an art of shopping, this is where it should be taught. This is a retail community that celebrates quality, variety and above all, personality. The shops of Saugatuck/Douglas are almost audacious in their individuality...they engage one’s senses from every angle. Proceeding from the south end of Butler Street in downtown Saugatuck, you’ll find rare spices from around the world, fabulous high fashion shoes, posh French apparel with exquisite hats, French soaps, assorted Judaica, and bath salts from the Dead Sea. Clothing stores abound for every gender and generation from fashionistas to the jet-set yachting crowd. There is a drug store for everything you forgot and left at home and a humorous sign shop to help you remember next time. Going north on Butler Street, you’ll come across rare books, the finest preserves and salsas from Michigan’s northern fruitlands, outlets for tasting local wines, and the go-to-source for Michigan made apparel for outdoor enthusiasts. Foodies can still find precision culinary tools, cookware and truffle oils at the Butler Pantry’s new location on the north end of this main street. For the inveterate shopper, Culver, Griffith, Mason, Main and Hoffman Streets also yield a variety of goods such as a tasting room for imported olive oils, locally blended and roasted coffees, an indulgent dog boutique, whimsical resort wear, cosmetics and accessories – some that actually change color in the sunlight, difficult to find oil lamps, artisan leather crafts, fine jewelry and several sassy gift shops. Exploring Saugatuck’s side streets, nooks and crannies unveil a myriad of goods to tempt the enthusiastic shopper. One block west on Water Street, visit the whimsical Dockside Marketplace on the boardwalk overlooking the harbor. Here shoppers can find quirky gifts, home and garden accents and exuberant shopkeepers. There are many fascinating shops all along Water Street specializing in fair trade products, beachwear, custom jewelry, exquisite natural stone beads, and retro collectables. It’s a pleasure to shop and dine in the village of Douglas just a half-mile east of Saugatuck. Visitors will find an exceptional collection of diverse 20 | Saugatuck/Douglas Visitors Guide shops, world-class artists’ galleries and an exquisite wine bar specializing in exclusive wines from small private vintners. The ever-evolving historic downtown, on Center Street, is lined with appealing store fronts, fine art and craft galleries, several of the area’s most popular restaurants, gourmet cookies and a trendy espresso bar where you arrive as a stranger and leave as friend. Visitors will find eclectic merchandise featuring gifts, artisan jewelry, antiques, retro furniture and architectural salvage in addition to home decor and decorative appointments. Look for beautifully framed art prints, unique children’s toys and a dozen titles of Sabuda’s renowned and hard to find pop-up children’s books. When leaving Douglas, en route to Oval Beach via Center Street, don’t miss Just Add Water, a beach shop selling or renting everything you need to be “in,” “on,” or “around” the water. Traveling a half-mile south on Blue Star Highway, serious collectors will find West Michigan’s largest antique mall and the area’s first microbrewery and restaurant where visitors can take a tour and actually brew their own beer! Nearby there is a hobby shop specializing in collectable miniature trains. Those wishing to explore nature’s bounty will discover West Michigan’s largest blueberry farm where the harvest ripens in August – shoppers can buy freshly picked blueberries or pick their own. Close-by, gardeners will be captivated by two highly regarded local nurseries – complete garden centers – in serene settings where they can search out rare botanicals, garden decor, furniture, statuary and horticultural supplies, tools and equipment. The finest professional services abound in the area, including local banks with ATMs, numerous real estate agencies offering services for renting, buying or selling local cottages, condos and homes, top-flight attorneys, financial advisors and accountants, beauty salons and health care providers for both humans and their pets, masseurs, chiropractors, yoga instructors and alternative treatment practitioners. In a retail world increasingly dominated by “bigness” and “sameness,” the shops of Saugatuck/Douglas are ready to provide a memorable experience which will reveal the heart of this community’s ebullient personality.
