Tabitha’s Closet School Supplies Giveaway This year’s Tabitha’s Closet School Supplies Giveaway will take place on Saturday, August 13th, from 9:00 ‘til 11:00 AM. This has become a highly-anticipated event; in fact, many area families rely on the School Supplies Giveaway to prepare their youngsters for school. The success of this program is solely due to the generous donations that you, the people of the Winthrop United Methodist Church, provide each year. Your commitment to this ministry is evident in your unwavering support. Below is a list of items needed to make 2016’s Giveaway a success. Thank you. Backpacks for ages pre-K through high school/boys and girls #2 Pencils Ball point pens, black, blue, and red ink 1 Subject Notebooks 3-Ring binder Filler Paper 3-Ring Binders Glue Sticks (Please, no liquid glue) Crayons, boxes of 24 Hi-liters Colored Pencils Permanent Markers Erasers, Large and Pencil End Rulers Toothbrushes We have a heightened need for backpacks this year, since we do not have the reserve supply we had last year. Yeow! (rhymes with meow!) The noise, the sand piles, the nailing, the boards, and even a tree that came down in a heavy wind very near where the nursery school storage building was moved, folks working, and God made sure it missed all but the ground. For now the Trustees point to Ms. Jane as she so skillfully guides and engineers men and boys constructing the new playground equipment. Others such as Sue Reinke have pitched in with providing the meals, etc. Trustees are now concentrating on the next green phase for our church. There has been lots of conversation and we are starting slowly by the placement of a new container marked for none separated trash. This is not for food or drink. We are hopeful that the habit of recycling the dry elements of our waste will find their way into it...... paper, glass, bottles, etc. NO FOOD or GARBAGE, etc. We have volunteers standing by to be sure our recycling bags when full are headed in the right direction. Any questions, ask Bill Buck, the Recycle Royale. The pears are small and green yet on the three trees but we are hopeful that they will come along as we really nipped the caterpillar problem in the bud (nests). Time will tell but all eyes will be on the trees. It has been a busy spring. Our seniors have graduated, the Sunday School youngsters have received Bibles and recognition. Now is the time for some outside painting, edges, trim, covers, Nursery School sign posts, and more talk about the hopefully new outside sign telling the world where we are, what we are doing, and what we have to offer. Hope you all have a great summer. Feel free to deadhead our flowers when you go by and be a litter picker-upper, esp. on the west side. The winds of spring have kept some of us busy. Remember, too, one good deed a day can make you feel peaceful. Imagine what more than one can do.....your faithful trustees. Sue Thomas Calendar WUMC Prayer Chain Our church has an electronic prayer chain which enables instant sending of prayer requests to a large number of prayer warriors made up of members of the WUMC congregation. Goes great with board games (especially Scrabble), cards, ghost stories, just about anything! Hannaford Gift Cards Don’t forget that Hannaford gift cards are for sale every Sunday during Fellowship time immediately following worship. They are available in amounts of $25, $50, and $100. This project is a fundraiser for the church; for every $2,000 in cards we order, the church receives $100 in free cards, amounting to $2,000 - $3,000 per year. If you shop at Hannaford, and you are going to eat anyway J, why not shop using gift cards purchased at WUMC? (Cannot be used for alcohol or tobacco products.) Medical Devices Ministry Are you aware our church has a supply of donated crutches, canes, walkers, wheelchairs, toilet seat adapters, shower chairs, etc. that people can use when they are recovering at home from an injury, surgery, or other medical issue. Please see Chris O’Connell or make your request at the church office. If we have it, we’d love to have you borrow it. Regular Saltine Crackers – enough to completely line a 10”x15”cookie sheet, with sides 1 cup butter (2 sticks) 1 cup light brown sugar 1 (12 oz.) package chocolate chips 1-1/2 cups finely chopped nuts of your choice Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Completely line, in a single layer, the cookie sheet with the crackers. In a saucepan, bring butter and brown sugar to a boil; boil for 3 minutes. Pour butter/sugar mixture over crackers, completely covering them. Bake in oven for 5 minutes. Immediately after removing from oven, sprinkle chocolate chips on top. They will melt and spread easily to cover all. BE CAREFUL – THIS STUFF IS HOT! Immediately sprinkle chopped nuts over all. Cool and break into bark-like pieces. The deadline for the September 2016 newsletter is August 15th. Please email your committee’s article, news, announcement to the church office prior to that date. Food Pantry Donations On the first Sunday of each month, the congregation is invited to bring non-perishable food items and personal hygiene items to donate to the Winthrop Food Pantry. If the pantry has specific needs, we will pass that information on, however, all donations of nutritious foods are welcome. A volunteer from WUMC (currently Kay Riggs) will take the donated items to the Food Pantry. Bottles and Cans Needed! Over the past few months, the church has experienced a noticeable decrease in the numbers of recyclable bottles and cans that have been donated. The proceeds from these donations fund the gifts the church presents to its graduating high school seniors every year. The bottles and cans you donate are the only financial support of this ministry. Over the next few years, there will be a number of young people connected to WUMC who will be reaching the significant milestone that is high school graduation. If you are not already doing so, will you please prayerfully consider contributing your bottles and cans? They can be brought to the church or brought directly to MT Bottle Co. on Royal Street in Winthrop. Just tell them to credit the WUMC account. Thank you. Summer is upon us and Sunday School is on vacation. We wish everyone a wonderful summer. Sunday School will begin again on Rally Day, Sunday, September 11, 2016. A church family bowling outing is being planned for anyone who would like to enjoy a fun time that afternoon. More information will follow in the church bulletin. Soon will be the time for filling all the committee seats for the coming year. Anyone interested in joining the CE Committee, please speak to Pastor Ned or Lynda Pratt. Blessings to All, Lynda Pratt Laundry Tip Brought to you by Tabitha’s Closet! Add 1/2 cup of white vinegar to the final rinse in your washing machine, and it will soften your laundry and help keep your machine smelling sweet and clean! Bonus benefit is you never have to buy fabric softener again! Thanks for all of the kind words and prayers said during my father’s illness and recent death. Having the support of our church family is very meaningful especially during difficult times. God bless! Mark Johnston Prayer Shawl Ministry Anyone is welcome to knit or crochet a shawl that will be made available to someone who is suffering from illness, surgery or injury. This unique first-person, living history interpretation will be presented by the Rev. Ann Partner Nelson of Wells, Maine and her husband. Nelson has been researching, writing, and giving monologues about Crosby for more than 20 years. This event, featuring the singing of several hymns, will be a journey through Crosby’s amazing life, including the fact that she was blind from an early age yet still managed to write some 8,000 hymns. Many of those hymns are still sung in our churches. There will be no charge for attending. A mission offering for the Wonder-A-While Nursery School will be received. Children and youth will be especially inspired by the program. Refreshments will follow. Child Care will be available. If you have any questions, contact John or Helen Neff. Tabitha’s Closet has had a very busy spring, with many donations and visitors on every other Saturday when they are open. People continue to come from Winthrop and several surrounding towns. Thank you to everyone who will help this summer. The annual Back Pack and School Supply Give Away will be on Saturday August 13, 2016. This is always a very wonderful event and many children are given a back pack with other school supplies.
