vol. 66 issue 3 Potentate’s Message MTopics IDIAN March, 2011 Visitor Noble Roger Kimble, Mizpah Shriners, Ft. Wayne, Indiana Wichita, Kansas Super Bowl Party DAVID PATE WOW!!! Have we ever kicked off a GREAT year for Midain already or not? The Super Bowl Party was just as advertised, a SUPER BOWL PARTY and it was Super too! Noble Wayne Price and Lady Keli, what a party you two put together for us, outstanding. Thank You. We had competition from an “old” guy, a “Young” guy and a noble that tried to slide into the goal posts. Noble Dahl, we were playing football not baseball, but it was one heck-of-a-slide you made. Then, what about the Valentine’s Dinner and Dance in the Mecca. The Oriental band prepared the dinner and cooked the KC Strips to perfection and taste and the service was just as good! Great job! Thanks to Noble Lonnie Nichols and Lady Melinda for the Valentine’s Dance and the stunning room decorations. DJ Nathan Jones was in top form for the dancers. Nathan is auditioning for America’s Got Talent. Good Luck to you Nathan, we know you will rate very high on the talent scale! Coming up in March: Potentate’s Ball and Breakfast. The Ball is Saturday, March 19th at the Marriott Hotel. We also have secured excellent room rates for the event, just $99 plus tax. If you secure a room be sure to mention it is for the Shrine Potentate Ball. Then the Breakfast will be at the Marriott as well, in the Garden Room, Sunday, 8:30 am beginning with eye openers while they last. The Director’s Staff says, “You don’t want to miss, “Fun with the Potentate” after breakfast. Howard Malone, Van Unit Commander 2011 Membership By ANDY BAYLES Nobles, I am excited to once again be tasked with helping all of us undertake the most difficult task we all face, Membership. We made great strides last year with restoring Nobles due in large part to a diligent and extremely hard working group of Nobles on the Calling Committee. We have a lot on the agenda for this upcoming year, including a Life Membership raffle and the unveiling of the Perpetual Life Membership payment program. I don’t want to ruin all the surprises, let’s just say….stay tuned! I was recently going through the Midian archives and looking through Ceremonial Programs from 1909 through 1975. From the very beginning, the message has been and continues to be the same. Visit your Blue Lodges, introduce yourself to a Brother who would be a great Shriner. With this in mind I will be creating a program to reward, Midian Nobles who visit area Blue Lodges. Stay tuned, there is more to come and don’t forget about out upcoming Information Nights. tuesday, March 29, 2011; Thursday, April 21, 2011; Monday, September 26, 2011; Monday, October 17, 2011 Thank you for all that you do, Andy Bayles - Membership Chairmen “Help us, help ourselves!” Potentate Tickets for the Ball and Breakfast are on sale at Midian. Seating can be made when tickets are purchased. Contact Jody for more information. Noble Ed Day has did it again…. He has set up another Shrine Night at the Wichita Thunder Hockey on Sunday, March 27th at the Intrust Arena. Great seating again and even a great price for the event too. We will have the Parade on the ice again. Contact Noble Ed for the parade activity. Tickets are available at Midian for just $10, regular price of $20. Seating will be on the side instead of on the end of the arena. Thanks Ed, we are looking forward to a great hockey game too. Lastly but not least…. The Circus is Coming, The Circus is Coming!! Chief Rabban Terry Schrant starts the circus off with another Shrine Parade in Delano, Thursday From page 1 evening, April 14th with Tigers, Elephants and performers. Bring the kids and grandkids and the neighbors kids and grandkids out to the parade and to see the animals after the parade too! Shriners know how to conduct a parade! The key to a successful circus is our advertising and ticket sales. Not only for Midian but for your Club or Unit to prosper as well. Sell, Sell, Sell, we can do it, I know we can! Shriners know how to sell tickets and have a GREAT 3-Ring Circus! March is on us already, and time is marching quickly standing for no one, savor the moments, attend and support as many Shrine functions this year as you can. Together, We Can Achieve! Fraternally, David Pate, Your Potentate 2011 Midian Shrine Topics Page 4 Harper County The Plumb line, measuring rods and other working tools of our craft tell us of how the building of King Solomon’s Temple was achieved. In the Bible the prophets Isaiah, Jeremiah, Amos and Zechariah all allude to how the building of this magnificent structure took place. They also tell of how the Grand Architect inspired His prophets to give His people only a glimpse of this today. Something so hard to imagine that we’re all taken with awe. Most of us aspire to one day make that pilgrimage to observe for ourselves the magnificence of this work. I sent a scroll, by special courier, to Jerusalem there to be placed on the western / Wailing Wall of what is left of the Temple today. The arrival was on February 1st, 2011 and the tiny scroll was laid within the cracks of the wall there to request and receive the blessing of Deity. The prayer request is for each of us and for our beloved Midian Shrine to find good Health, Happiness, Peace, Prosperity, Joy, Wisdom and Love and for these blessings to abound within our numbers until that day when the trump shall sound and we shall all be called home to be with our Lord in paradise forever. After a time this tiny scroll from far away Kansas and written in English is to be taken down from the wall and carried to a burial site on the Mt. of Olives and placed there to rest for eternity. We are taught that no prayer is too small and that all prayers are heard and answered. However, they are answered in God’s own time and in His own way. Let’s leave it to Him. So mote it be. John W. Stewart, Chaplain Sumner County Wow, what a start to the New Year. Congratulations to Ill Sir David Pate and is Lady Pat. Installation was great and was well supported by SCSC members. The first event for the year was the annual Lamb Fry. This event was again a success, as usual, and was attended by many. Special guests included; Ill Sir David Pate, Midian Treasurer and SCSC Liaison Bob Bullman, Chaplain John Stewart, and last but not least Trustee Bob Baker. Thanks to all that made the drive to Belle Plaine in the cold weather. I want to give a special thanks to the cooks for the evening. Hal Martin, Gene Alexander, Chip Hansen, Jackie Broyles, and Jerry Pratt all pitched in to make this event a great. I also want to thank everyone else that attended the work night as this is a big part of this event. Sorry about Hurley and I being late. We will have to make that up the next time around. Thanks for saving a few cold ones for us. They were great after the long drive down there. Thank you to everyone for all of your hard work. On a sad note, long time SCSC member Jeremy Woodson Reporter Larry Farber passed in February. I wanted to thank Larry and his family for all the help he has given the club over the years. He will be missed by many. Looking forward through March, there are a lot of activities at Midian. The monthly social for SCSC was accidentally scheduled on top of a pretty big event. We are going to have to adjust our schedule a little bit so please bear with us. As of the writing of this article, we are not exactly sure what we are going to do. Please watch your mailbox for an update as I am sure a card will be forthcoming. Circus is getting closer and closer every day. Before you know it, we will be busy welcoming all the children and their parents to the best circus in the land. SCSC has and will continue to be a big supporter of this event and will be out in force. I hope to see as many of you there as possible. Remember that participation is the key to the success of our temple. Get out and attend an event to show your support. www.dignitymemorial.com The Harper County Bucking T’s witnessed the end of era in our February meeting. Noble Wayne Kiser stepped down as our long time Circus Chairman. Wayne’s family was in attendance as he announced to the club that he would no longer serve due to a few medical issues that would prohibit him from making his rounds promoting the Shrine Circus. Wayne has for years and years been one of the strengths of the Bucking T’s when it came time for gathering ads, selling tickets, visiting the schools and so much more. Wayne received a standing ovation from the Bucking T’s along with hand shakes and hugs for the outstanding job he has done for the Shrine Circus. The Bucking T’s have planned started for our annual fundraisers coming very soon beginning with the Turkey Shoot in April and our Golf Tournament in August. Nobles Shorty Thomas, Gary Wohlschlegel, and Dallas Kenney seemed ready for the fundraisers. They came to the meeting with golf clubs and shot guns. Come to think of it maybe they brought those items Barber County The Barber County Firewagons held their annual election of officers and calf fry on January 31st with a tremendous local turnout. It was held at the Plum Thickett Inn with “melt in your mouth” calf fries cooked to perfection. Sue Sterling from Yur Place brought some wonderful sides, as we always expect and get from her. We surely missed the Kops coming down from Wichita, but the weather was horrible. We’re looking for them next year. We collected around $4,500 for the Plane of Dodge City Shrine Club “Clowns are magical and present a life-sized work of art for all to enjoy.” Hi – Happy end of February and moving into the isles of March to all of you. Winter is still with us here in Western Kansas but Spring is around the corner. The Dodge City Shrine Club was supposed to hold their monthly meeting on the 9th of February at Cowtown, but due to the weather it was canceled. The weather changed from sub-zero wind chills in the beginning of the week so by Thursday it was warmer and by the weekend people didn’t even wear coats for the Sunday performance of the Shrine Circus in Dodge City. The Shrine Circus had great turnouts for the 7 shows that were presented during the 11th – 12th and 13th. We had some wonderful clowns from the Midian Krazy Klowns MARCH, 2011 GARY UMMEL, JR Reporter to convince folks to buy Circus ads. Or maybe they were going to thrash the Topics reporter for taking a month off. I believe that they should take a crack at the club treasurer, Noble Travis Womack; he’s the one with the money. I noticed that Noble Gary Gelvin, Jr. is moving on up to the Big Wigs table. Gary was seated neatly across the Valentines Steak Dinner table from our New Illustrious Sir Noble Dave Pate. Gary’s Lady Denise was there also, of course she had to be she is the only one of those two that is capable of driving the Giant 1940’sWillies Jeep, or at least that’s the rumor. The Bucking T’s are saving up to buy Noble Carroll Dando a cheese burger. Heck, we may even spring for a nice chewy cup of coffee, then again we may not. If you would like to be on the Harper County Bucking T’s mailing list, please email [email protected] with your name and address. Bonus Topics I could walk like Brando right into the sun, and dance just like a Casanova. TOM TRAYLOR Reporter Mercy which we are planning to deliver to Wichita at the next meeting. Officers elected were Tom Traylor, President, Rus Molz, 1st Vice-President, Jonathan Walz, 2nd Vice-President and Gary Jacobs Secretary-Treasurer. We also signed up two new candidates for the Mysteries at this meeting. In new business, we voted to change our Christmas Party in December to an “End of Winter” party in late February. This is scheduled for February 25, 2011 this year. “Doc” McCosh Reporter come out and help us with the circus. Thanks to each one of you and the time you put into this great event. On Sunday, the Midian Divan was out in force to see the circus including Potentate Dave Pate and Lady Pat, Chief Rabban Terry Schrant and Lady Pam, High Priest & Prophet Lonnie Nichols and Lady/Kyle’s Mom Melinda, and our own 1st Ceremonial Master Larry Wilson and his Lady Jackie. We were honored to have all of them come and participate. Thanks again for participating in our Circus here in Dodge. The next DC Shrine Club meeting will hold their meeting of 2011 on the 9th of March. The meeting will be held at Cowtown. Social time starts at 6:30 pm. Dinner is at 7:00 pm. Good night America wherever you are. “May All Your Days Be Circus Days” MARCH, 2011 Greenwood County What a great evening we had at our Installation Dinner. We were honored to have our Illustrious Sir David Pate and Lady Pat along with many members of the Divan join us for the evening. We were also honored that Imperial Sir Jeff Sowder and Lady Cheryl were able to work us into their schedule and stay “home” to join us as well. Our local officers were duly installed by our Potentate Dave, and the Proclamation was sounded by Imperial Sir Jeff. Thanks to everyone who made it out and for those that missed it, you missed a wonderful evening of Shrine Fellowship. The accompanying picture is our officers being duly installed. Spring is upon us and it is now time to roll up our sleeves and get to work. Our first big event will be Circus which is April 1417. You should have received your tickets in the mail and as before, you can bring your tickets to our Circus Chairman Noble Bruce Detwiler, or any of the circus committee. You can also keep your tickets for your own use and distribution and send in your check to Midian, just remember to make sure to mark Greenwood County on your ticket receipt so we get credit for the sale. If you don’t want all of them keep and pay for what you want and return the rest, just remember, all tickets Harvey County Club & Hobo Unit We l c o m e n e w N o b l e Lonnie Patterson and lady Jeannie. Lonnie was initiated in a special “Cold Sands” ceremony at Midian’s February Stated Meeting. To clarify information in the January column, Shrine Top-liner was Hobo VP Noble Rex Yahn, with a second by Club President Noble Marvin Harman. Noble Larry Clover was Noble Lonnie’s Newton Lodge #142 sponsor. Last month’s column had Noble Clover as being nominated as the Newton Lodge Junior Warden. Oops..his correct title is Junior Steward. As long as we’re in a correction mode, Noble Fred Smith will be serving as the Club Liaison Officer for the first time…not second-time around as reported last month. As long as errors are the subject, in the January column it was mistakenly reported that Noble Ott Lang started a collection that led to a donation to Midian’s building fund. In actuality, his collection results went to the Hobo Unit for fuel. He does this frequently, Midian Shrine Topics CARL “C.F.” COX Reporter are bar coded and need to be accounted for one way or another. We will be taking our kids to the Circus on April 15th so plan now to make the trip. We will be back at Intrust Arena again, and reports are many of the “issues” we had last year have been worked out so we should have a great Circus. Spring also means it is time to start getting our 3-Wheelers out of the winter moth balls and get them ready for another parade season. I know it seems a long way off, but it will be here before you know it. Noble Leonard Booth has been in and out of the Hospital again. We all know he is a fighter and will beat whatever has a hold of him, but keep him in your thoughts and wish him a speedy recovery. I apologize for my oversight, but the Black Camel has once again been amongst us. Noble Glen Wright passed away recently and I missed it last month. Noble Glen and Lady Beth were members of Greenwood County for many years and he will be missed. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family. Remember, if I don’t know it, I can’t report it… Please keep the news coming! You can send it to me at [email protected] or give me a call. JOHN HECKMAN Reporter and his efforts are greatly appreciated. The Club donated $500 to the Midian Building Fund, and also agreed to pay for new tires on the Caboose. Noble Dale Perkins made a sizeable donation to the Building Fund as well. Thanks to Club Treasurer Noble Byron Brittain for catching the mistake. Last month this writer must have been having an extended “senior moment” when he wrote this and another Unit’s columns; both filled with errors. As the kids say, “My bad.” In the same vein, check your information in your new membership book and notify Secretary Noble John Heckman if any corrections must be made. Think and Sell Circus, less than a month away. Remember that our yearly operating funds are largely generated by our Circus ad and ticket sales. Until next time, come smile with us, the fun-iest Club in Midian. Southwest Shrine Club We had a great turn out for the SWSC February meeting. We had eighteen nobles and ladies attending. A big thank-you to noble Carl and Lady Chris for the valentine gifts given to the nobles and ladies. They were yummy!! President Noble Carl Lynn visited with the group about the storage issue for the firetruck, fez, & ambulance. Noble Bill Larrabee stated that he had space for them in his round top on his farm. Noble Wendell Smotherman informed the group that our long time member Wayne Miller had passed away. He will be missed greatly. Noble Wendell also informed the Nobles Butler County Real cold temperatures and plenty of snow drove our leader to a decision point. After some discussion, President Chris Nelson decided to cancel the February meeting. Must have been a good choice since some of the people I talked to just could not get out of their driveway. Others such as Lady Nina Parry had a cleared driveway and planned to carry on with her usual bridge game. Noble Sherman Parry is still laid up, so you can still catch him. Also, Lady Leona Kenny is at home recuperating from some surgery. Some of our group showed up at the valentine’s dinner and party at Midian, which was an enjoyable event. President Nelson is Midian Riders We start this new year on a very sad note. Noble OJ Brock has left us to go home to be with the Lord. He will be missed by so many people that he has touched, Ambassadors, Riders, Legion of Honor, American Legion, Gold Wing Touring Association, Harley Owners Group (HOG), I’m sure the list goes on and on. I informed his Lady Bonnie that should she need anything at all to not hesitate letting us know. Please keep Bonnie and the family in your prayers. Noble Dave Pate will be the new Potentate. As with all Potentates, I know we are in for a Cartoon The Midian Shrine Cartoon Unit is geared up to start anew in 2011, we’ve enjoyed strong attendance and participation at several function such as the Valentine Dance, Super Bowl Party, Sumner County Nut Fry, etc. thus far in 2011. First Ceremonial Master Noble Larry Wilson made the trip from Wichita to visit with the SWSC members. Noble Larry told the club about how he became a Shriner and explained his duties as a Divan officer. Our next meeting will be on March 7, 2011, at the Salty Dog in Liberal. The meeting will start at 6:30 p.m. The April meeting will also be at the Salty Dog in Liberal on April 4, 2011. Have a great month and we will be seeing you next month. ARV KRUMINS Reporter also a member of the Oriental Band, so he was present, but was busy tossing salad for all that had dinner. The steaks were super tasty too. Noble Harold Brewer must be doing better with his knee as he and Lady Phyllis were up for a few dances. Well, it is time to start looking for leprechauns and a pot of gold. St. Patrick’s Day won’t come until after our meeting, but one valuable thing you will find at the next meeting is the warn friendship of our group. We will try again to meet at Double D’s in El Dorado. Perhaps this time the weather will cooperate and be good. See you all Wednesday March 9th at 6pm. GOLDWINGMAN Reporter lot of fun events coming up. I am particularly interested in the Albuquerque Balloon Festival in October. This is something I have always wanted to see. Hopefully, this is the year for it. Note in the Topics that the Scottish Rite is presenting Musical Theatre Productions throughout the year and all shows are open to the public. Keep yourself informed of the many other functions other than Midian by reading the monthly Topics, reading Dave Pate’s e-mails, and of course the monthly Unit Meetings. KURT SIEGRIST Reporter sales, we’ve committed to a banner and a bike donation for the Circus. We further look forward to supporting the brothers and leadership of the other clubs and units in our great fraternity. Thank you all for your support of the Cartoon Unit. Midian Shrine Topics Page 6 Oriental Band Our 3rd try at running a restaurant went off rather well at the Valentine party steak feed. We grilled and served over 150 choice KC strips with giant baked potato, garlic salad, tossed salad, corn and fresh rolls. The meal even came with home-made desserts. Those of you that missed out – missed out! Most of the OB members and band aids were there and did an excellent job. Thanks to the Kops for the loan of their cooker. This is the last chance to get information on the trip to Atlantic City, March 22nd thru 25th at a special price. Call Carroll Dando @ 522-2398. Midian Bowlers This article is going to be short. Bowling has been called off the last two weeks because of weather and I only have two weeks of bowling to report on. In the Northrock Men’s Tuesday Night Shrine League for week 20, the High Games and Series went to Marshall Gregory (300,717) and Rob Pohlman (279,760). In week 19, Rick Gilpin (267,679) and Foster Smith (236,641) had the High Game and Series. For the season, if you don’t have a 300 game you don’t get your name on the sheet. Alvin James, Marshall Gregory and Foster Smith have all bowled 300’s this season. Rick Gilpin, Brian West and Rob Pohlman have all bowled 299’s this season. Great bowling, Nobles. These are always a good time and we expect a good turnout from the OB! As far as I know there will be no “contest” on St Patrick’s Day between the OB and the Koppers! Age has finally caught up with the experts in that particular skill in both units! The picture this month is OB drummer “WW” Wells and veteran OB and patrol guy John Burkes discussing the proper way to stomp a cymbol? BILL GREGORY Reporter lead after 20 weeks of bowling. Ladies were led by Anita Simpson (207,544), Bonnie Gregory (190,495), Joellen Rhorer (187,521) and Carole Neal (180,492). Ladies Tag-Along League had Linda Woodard (241,238,586), Melody Arnold (224) as Shrine Ladies with leading scores in weeks 19 and 20. After 20 weeks of bowling, the Babes with Balls team led by 4 ½ games. I have no information to report on the Senior Mixed League. Who knows, maybe with the weather we have had, they have not bowled. Until next month, that’s all folks. Chippers Sorry about the delay in getting our year end tournament results posted which was played Saturday 10/02/10. Another great year end tournament, even though we didn’t have quite the turnout needed to make three flights we ended up with two flights…believe everyone that showed up had a great time, especially the following winners: A-Flight: 1st Place – Noble Lynn (DaddyO) Sage and & our very own El-Presidentee’ Noble Don (Sonny-boy) Sage – way to go you two sand-baggers, not bad for a Father & Son team; 2nd Place – Noble Randy (I’m not supposed to be here) Wiggins & Noble Ken (yup, he was here) Stuber (everyone, do your best to keep this just amongst us brothers….shhhh!). B-Flight: 1st Place – Noble Andy Bayles & Noble Jerry Craft; 2nd Place – Noble Alvin Ogden & Noble Jodie Mosier. We also had the following winners of our specialty holes: Closet to the pin on number 7 – El-Presidentee’ Noble Don Sage; Longest Drive on number 9 – Noble Steve ‘the Moon, make that the Animal’ Mitchell; Closest to the Pin on number 16 – Noble Randy (I’m not supposed to be here) Wiggins; Longest Putt on number 18 – Noble Alvin ‘the Putter’ Ogden. We’ve also had a couple of Chipper meetings since our last topics. The last meeting of 2010 had about 8 Chippers show up. However at our January 31st meeting we had approximately 38 Chippers there which we had a lot of good discussion and actions taken, so thought we’d try to bring everyone up to speed, first of which will be our Officers for 2011: President – Noble Don Sage, agreed to complete his 2nd term (Doc, might want to get this going now, 1moreyear, 1moreyear, 1moreyear) Vice President – Noble Terry Schrant; Secretary/Treasurer – Noble Brent Trayler; Chipper’s Topics Reporter – Noble Mel Graves. President Don Sage was able to strike the same deal with Braeburn Golf Course as we had last year keeping the same Green Fees and Cart Fees. We agreed to reduce our League dues to $50 and to begin play on May 5th this year. We voted to extend our season through the month of September, skipping/not playing the Thursday before CSSA / Labor Day MARCH, 2011 Billy Wayne Beverage Reporter Weekend, pending President Don getting concurrence from Braeburn Golf Course. We talked about limiting the league to the first 80 members/40 teams; this would allow us to have an even 20 teams in both A & B Leagues and by playing through September would allow us to play every team once. We discussed allowing those players 70+ years of age the option of playing from the gold tees but they must commit at the beginning of the year, establish a handicap and play the entire year from there. Discussed how to attest that everyone has accounted for all strokes taken during a played hole, whether it be a whiff, a chunk, a shank, a ricochet, or whatever, count it, mark it down so that when you sign off on the score card you and your teammate concur with the scores being turned in. We determined that there was no need to have a rules committee this year but it was asked that if you are playing with someone new to the game to share with them your knowledge of the rules if something is observed, such as grounding your club in a sand-trap, unplayable lie, hit out of bounds and so on. Our next meeting is scheduled for March 28th at 7:00 PM in the Isis room. Please be sure and get your team signed up now, before we fill up and also before the deadline of April 15th. We have attached a copy of a sign up form here in the topics, so cut it out, fill it out and send it in to Noble Lynn Sage, address on the form along with your dues. This will be my last Topics for the Chippers, Noble Mel Graves is taking over, so if you have any Chipper news please get with Noble Mel. It has really been great to do the topics for our unit these past three years, hope you all have enjoyed reading them as much as I enjoyed typing them! If I offended anybody, tough, get over it, grow a set of golf balls and get out there and play with them! Looking forward to seeing you all on the Links, until then, practice, practice, practice, because you need it! Moon & I are going to be shooting for another trophy this year, so please don’t get in our way – HA! This is your Chipper’s Report for the month of March 2011, brought to you by your ex-Chippers Reporter – Billy Wayne signing off! MARCH, 2011 Keystone Kops “Are you ready for some football? Well, this is ole Moon wondering, are you ready for a Monday night party?” No? Me neither. I think I have had about all the football I need for quite awhile, but the party sounds OK and party we did for the Super Bowl. It was illustrious Sir David Pate and Lady Pat’s first party of the year. It was a dandy with a great turnout. It looks to be another great year for Midian Shrine! Let’s all get out and attend the many fun things to do at Midian every week. By the way it was good to see Larry Papps, a.k.a. Cowboy and Lady Carolyn at the Super Bowl Party. Cowboy always helps out with the gaming squares for the game while Carolyn does the bingo thing. Cowboy was given veteran status at our last meeting, but has promised to continue to help out at the Super Bowl and our golf tournament. Cowboy is a Gold Whistle Kop and Pappy Coons award winner who joined us many years ago and has been very active with the Koppers. Carolyn is a Carol Coons award winner and is known for her delicious food she brings to CSSA. Don’t be strangers, OK? Now I would like to thank illustrious Sir and Past Potentate Gary Gates and Noble Richard Baughn for the fine job they did at our Keystone Kop installation. These ole guys have got it down to a really wonderful and fun evening as they install all the Kopper Board. They are sometimes serious when it counts, but fun and entertaining when it doesn’t count. We again thank you both and hope you all come back next year. Ya’ hear? Air Capital Eagles Hello everybody, yes we are still a live and kicking we have just been keeping a low profile but we have been busy the last couple of months. So right now I would like to congratulate our new Potentate David Pate and his Lady Pat and also to there Divan. We just had our first meeting with our new Laison Officer Randy Pierce and O boy is this year going to be fun year and I hope that Randy and his Lady Connie are ready. I also want to thank Noble Howard Brooks for being our Laison Officer last year and for Midian Shrine Topics “MOON” Reporter Does anyone out there have a used, but like new, 2 ton or bigger truck with 22.5 inch tires for sale? The Koppers are looking for a new hauler to haul the Paddy Wagon, if we can find one. We don’t have much money, so that is a big factor, but we be lookin’. Contact Hurley at 680-6393 if you do my friends. What’s Happening: this just in: Kansas Legislators have proposed a new law prohibiting texting in a bar if you are over the legal limit. A bill was introduced last week by the ex head of the Kansas EPA. The answer is: no we didn’t make it to Kiowa this year. It seems there is an ice happening ever year on the day we are to go. “Oh nuts, here it comes again” is a new Kopper phrase. Lady Sue is finally catching on to me. I have a bad habit when I come in from Shrine meetings, etc, to leave stuff on the dining room table. She has finally figured out that I am only leaving them there so they will be ready for the next month’s meeting or event. What a gal! Lady Mary Brown “where the heck is my mail?” “Did you blow your car up or what?”Snow should not be a factor either! We are off to the Mid-winter CSSAKK meeting. A van full on “nutty” Keystone Koppers is headed to KC. Leave your children inside people of KC. Here we come! I Wonder?? Was that really a Gold Whistle Richie got?? I Wonder?? Whatever happened to “airmail”?? I Wonder?? Who drove that van of Koppers to KC?? I Wonder?? Who drove them home?? MARK BROWN Reporter all of the help that he gave us. Just an update on what we have been doing well Noble Ed Parker is back in charge and we have been taking to two possible new members and I hope that they will sign up and join the unit and be the spark that we need and also another 1 of our goals for this year is to have 2 or 3 Airplanes and maybe 1 ground crew trailer in some more Parades and to get new members in the unit and also to get some of the older members to coming back to the meetings. Midian Classics What a great checkered flag for our unit in 2010 and we’re revving our engines for 2011. Our unit officers were elected, starting with Gene Alexander as President. (Three rounds of balloting before the ballot box had a single vote, and it was surprisingly favorable.) Other officers are Andy Snow as Vice-President, Ron Boese as Treasurer, Bob Griffith as Secretary, and Bob Giesen as Membership Chairman. First Ceremonial Master Wayne Wells swore-in all of our 2011 officers – the gavel transferred peacefully. Chaplain John Stewart becomes our newest Midian Divan Liaison. Out of the gate and running … Several of our unit members and their Ladies were present for the elegant Installation Ceremony at the Scottish Rite and following gala; Gene Alexander and Andy Snow formally installed. Illustrious Sir Dave Pate and Lady Pat’s party gets well deserved rave reviews! Early next morning our unit representatives were up before sunrise attending the information-filled unit training. However, we’re not done yet with this report. Then came the Super Bowl Party, and – you guessed right – we were there for the comradery. Next, the Valentine’s Sweetheart Dinner and Dance was well attended by the Golden VIPS Sixteen dedicated members braved the minus 17 degree cold to attend our February10th meeting. First Vice President Floyd Piper called the meeting to order in the absence of President Gene Payne. He led the members with the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag. The opening prayer was led by Andy Roberts. We were served another delicious meal prepared by the kitchen of the Masonic Home. Art Van Dresser announced the annual Million Dollar Band chili and soup feed at the Midian Temple on February 20. Our Past President, Bill Weber, read a message from our current President, Gene Mini-Cycles Page 7 ANDREW SNOW Reporter Midian Classics, a good time had by all Nobles and Ladies. The steaks were mouth-watering. A special thanks to Kelsey Nichols for the superb chocolates and strawberries that added a special touch to the dance, and that made our “Sugar Daddy” quite proud. A hardy thank you in advance to the Midian Classic Ladies, who will be providing refreshments for the Stated Meeting on February 16th. Upcoming event: Lora and Andy Snow will open their home for a Classics shindig on February 19th. Two Anniversaries: Ron and Carol Boese who wed on January 29th and Andy and Lora Snow who celebrabted their 10th on January 7th. And yes, we have several birthdays to announce: Lee Griffith on February 1st, Gary Harris on February 4th, Jan Harris in on February 8th, and Jerry Mason on March 13th. We do have a lot fun and welcome new members. Come join us on the 2nd Wednesday of each month or contact Bob Giesen (home 316-721-4178, cell 316-641-0375 or e-mail at [email protected]). The rest of us will be glad to talk with you too. Midian Classics has a passion about sports cars and seasoned CLASSY automobiles. Heck, we like to parade, compete, and get together; great cars seem like a good a reason as any!!!! CAROL HOLMES Reporter Payne, who proposed two subjects for future programs. Everyone agreed both were interesting subjects and will be presented probably in March and April. Our thoughts and prayers are with our members, Dottie Payne, currently at the Masonic Home and our Chaplain, Joan Harris, recovering from recent surgery. Any member of Midian over 55 and his lady are welcome to join our group. Contact President Gene Payne, Floyd Piper or any member for details. The meeting closed with Andy Roberts leading us in closing prayer. TAYLOR DURR Reporter Hello once again. Now that we have all survived the snow storms and record cold temps of February we can now look forward to the spring months ahead. Our February meeting was cancelled due to weather. I think all were very disappointed. Poor Jim Kyle braved the weather and went to the temple looking for fun and fellowship, only to find that they had already locked the door. This all could have been avoided if only Noble Scott would have called Jim to let him know that the meeting was canceled after being informed by brother Troy! Jim, we apologize! On a brighter note Noble Roger Smith reported that he had accepted a new job and would hopefully be able to start attending more of our events. Congratulations to Roger, Lady Tricia and family. Don’t forget we will be hosting our annual golf tournament in early June so stay tuned for details. It is always a good time! We were well represented at the public installation by having several of our members present. We met our new liaison office Noble Lonnie Nichols who informed us of several coming events. We were honored by a certificate of appreciation from the Plane of Mercy for our donation. Start planning your year as it appears to be a busy one. By the time this report reaches readers the Valentines party will be a memory. We hope everyone had fun. Sadly the outing Curtis planned for the Crown Up-Town did not get enough support and had to be cancelled. We are, however, planning on getting together on the last Saturday of every month and going somewhere we can take our ladies, so mark your calendars. Upcoming events are, March 19 the Potentates Ball, March 20 Potentates Breakfast, March 27th Shrine night at the Thunder Hockey game, and the Midian Shrine Circus on April 14 to 19. The Wichita State University car show benefitting the Midian Plane of Mercy will be on April 3. Noble Randy Edwards is sponsoring the First Annual Classic-N-Custom Car Show on April 16 at Derby High School in memory of his son Tusten “Tuz” Edwards. Benefits are going to The Children’s Miracle Network. So mark your calendars and support Randy and his cause. On February 26th the group will meet at the County Extension parking lot at 21st and Ridge Road. We will then go to Carriage Crossing in Yoder for dinner with our Antique Auto family. As fast as the year passes, mark December 8th. This is the Antique Auto Christmas party at Mosley Street Melodrama, more on that later. Please keep Noble Jerry Elscott and Noble Ray Richecky in your prayers. Noble Jerry had surgery in January to remove the plates and screw in his ankle and is now being treated for infection that had set in around the hardware. Per his last doctor visit He is doing much better. Noble Ray had an outpatient procedure on Friday February 11th and we understand he had to spend the night anyway. Birthday wishes to: to Noble Rex Saylor, Noble Don Van Burkleo and Lady Rose Mary Hufford. Antique Autos will be starting a face book page so watch for further details as we work on getting that up and running. The group is looking forward to a great year. Hillbilly Band Looks as if we’ll be busy this coming year as we return to some old-favorite events and welcome new opportunities to entertain. As this is written we’ll have completed the January Stated Meeting warm-up and special rehearsal March 24th, and look forward to our next “first Thursday of the month” practice session March 3rd. These have been both educational and fun and Music Director Noble Al Brumbaugh is looking forward to showcasing some of our “new stuff.” For the first time in several years we’ll again be working the social hour for the Spring and Fall Ceremonial Ladies’ Luncheons, thanks to Illustrious Sir David Pate and lady Pat, and Noble Carl Younts will crank-up the Model-T for the 4:00 PM parades. We have also been invited to again provide music for the Shrine/Scottish Rite Children’s Christmas Party. Both of these events have been traditional with the Hillbillies for many years, and we’re proud to have been asked to return. We’ll enjoy the Circus Parade Thursday, Directors Staff Installation of officers was held Sat. Jan. 28th at the Scottish Rite. Everything went off very well. Congratulations to the Director Staff officers for 2011. They are as follows: President, Dean Lautherbach, Vice President, Rick Godwin, Secretary, Larry Stafford, Treasurer, Ray Scadden, Circus Chairman, J.R. Gelvin, and Membership Chairman, Kevin Coons. Noble, Ross Smith says thank you to those that stayed after installation to help him to put everything away. He said this was done very quickly so everyone could go back to the Shrine and enjoy the Post Installation dinner and party. Speaking of the dinner and party another huge THANK YOU to all the D.S. Ladies and Nobles for your donations of food and time helping to make this event a success. A personal thank you was read at our February D.S. meeting from our new Illustrious Sir, David Pate and his Lady Pat expressing their gratitude for such a successful event. He went on to say that he had received numerous compliments on the party and that we are known to be a premier unit at Midian. We had a great turnout of D.S. officers for the unit/club seminar held Saturday, January 29th. This went from 8:00am to 12:00pm with various speakers. This meeting was very informative and I believe everyone went away with some good ideas and goals that can hopefully be implemented and achieved for our unit this year. Remember it takes EVERYONE to get involved in as many activities as you can throughout the year. I’ve said many times before that you get so much more out of being a Shriner if you stay Horse Patrol We want to wish Lady Jane Ewert a nice and rapid recovery after her knee surgery. We had a very productive meeting for February, although we were short in numbers, all were there in spirit. I missed the Topics for February, Lady Jane Ewert had a birthday on February 20th. Our March birthday is PP Noble David MARCH, 2011 JOHN HECKMAN Reporter April 14th, and warm-up the crowd at the Saturday morning and matinee performances on Saturday, the 16th. Bassist Noble Bob Bergman spent unplanned time in a local emergency room at last year’s show because of a backstage fall, and says he’ll be walking verrry carefully this time out. And supposedly the handicapped parking issues of last year have been resolved. After a “bye” last year we’ll return to the great McPherson All-School’s Day musical parade on Friday, May 13th and outstanding hospitality at the home of Isis Noble Larry Premer following. The Midian Stated Meeting warm-up the 18th rounds out our May calendar. Oops! Drummer and columnist Noble John Heckman can’t even read his own notes (musical or otherwise). The quote in last-month’s column kidding guitarist Noble Jim Malia for using electronic charts was made by Noble Heckman, not trumpeter Noble Wilbur Geeding as was reported. RICK GODWIN Reporter involved with your units. Midians’ Super Bowl party was held Sunday, Feb. 6th. We had a good showing of Director Staff. Even our units very own and new Chief Aide, Nobel J.R. Gelvin entered the scavenger hunt and won 1st place. Way to go J.R., I hope you have caught your breath by now because you were suckin air their for awhile. Also thanks to all of you who brought goodies for our table. They were sooooo good, but I think I ate a little too much of Noble Larry Stafford’s hot sauce. But boy was it tasty. Our 2011 Director Staff social calendar is now completed and you may access and print this calendar out by going to the Director Staff’s web site at Yahoo.com. If you do not have access to this you may contact Dean or myself and we will get you a copy of this. There are some really good and fun events planned for this year. Stay tuned. Also at the Director Staff’s web site a sign up sheet to work at this years Shrine Circus is now available. We are again going to be responsible for the inflatable’s. Get involved and get your name listed as soon as you can because it takes a lot of people to run these rides. Birthday wishes for March go out to Nobles, Jerry Mason, Gene Payne, Fred Smith, Larry Stafford, and Ladies, Hidi Byrd, Amanda Davidson, and Julie Price. Their were no anniversaries listed on our roster for March. Our next Director Staff meeting is Wednesday, March 3rd at 7:00pm in the Isis room. Ladies will meet in the Oasis at the same time. Any one interested in joining us we will be in the Oasis and then if we have enough we will move to the ISIS West. Until next time. MARCH, 2011 Motor Patrol Captain Rocky McWilliams moved the February meeting at Tommy’s a week due to the weather. Divan Liaison Asst. Rabban Jodie Mosier found us anyway and reported on the near term events. We welcome Asst Rabban Jodie to our cryptic brotherhood. Noble Bruce Detwiler drove from Eureka in snowy weather with lots of glare to attend. Captain Rocky is feeling sore after knee surgery. Noble Horst Hiller went to Tucson for the winter. Captain Rocky McWilliams promoted CSSA in Overland Park, Kansas and Imperial Session in Denver in July. MP is supporting Kansas Shrine Bowl July 29/ 30 with our attendance and sponsorships. Adjutant Noble Les Unrein was in attendance and discussed fund raising ideas. Lieutenant Noble Jerrod Cox continued to take notes. The Treasurer Noble Lynn Ungles reported on the treasury. Rajah Dave Johnson discussed PP Gary Dunn’s condition. The Circus Chair PP John Auch promoted the Circus with better news on advertising than last years ad sign debacle (my words not his). We are giving a Bike again this year. Nobles Mike Johnson, PP Jim McNerney, Bob Ragsdale, Vet Paul Morris, and Andy Johnson attended the meeting. MP is looking forward to the Potentates Ball and breakfast. Past Captain Dave Johnson, Vet Dave Taylor and Vet Joe Erdman met at PP Gary and Lady Judy Dunn’s hacienda for a review of 40 years of the Orange Jeepster. Noble Dave Johnson brought pictures (one is attached) from the first year of the Jeepsters. The significance of the Jeepster picture is these are the same men 40 years later. Noble Dave Johnson is wearing the Midian Shrine Topics NORM CONLEY Reporter 1971 uniform of the Motor Patrol. Forty years have passed since these Motor Patrolmen drove their new Jeepsters to Colorado Springs for CSSA. Veteran Motor Patrol Joe Erdman, riding number 5 and PP Gary Dunn rode number 2. Noble Dave Johnson rode in Number one. Veteran Dave Taylor owned number 3. Vet Lynn Dunn driving number 4 met them on the way. Noble Dave Johnson said they did this without ‘two nickels to rub together’. PP Gary Dunn was making $114 per week working for his dad. Veteran Joe Erdman said he was happy ‘punching holes in donuts’. The MP veterans swapped lies (what MP calls them in public) and looked at pictures from 40 years ago like the one with this article. I owned Jeepster number 3 for 14 years (buying it back a second time after three Martini’s). The Jeepsters are charmed. No one has had a serious accident in the Motor Patrol Jeepsters. Vet Glenn Johnson’s Jeepster lost a front right wheel which hit his back fender and then his Jeepster skipped down the road on three wheels before stopping. I broke a front axle and it dropped to the pavement while driving down the road. One unnamed German spun around on the turnpike after mysteriously moving the gear selector into reverse. Trips into the ditch have occurred, but no serious accidents. We were saddened to hear of the Loss of PP John Auch’s father this month. Again keep PP Gary Dunn and Noble Phil Frost in your thoughts and prayers as they fight cancer. Jeepster history and pictures of our activities are found on the www.motorpatrol. us website. Page 11 Arab Patrol Unlike the last issue, this will definitely be a short newsletter. Not much went on this month other than working the concession stand fundraisers at the Home Show and the Women’s Fair at Century II. For those of you that haven’t been there yet, the canteen has been reorganized again with the beer and pop coolers back to its original locations… the beer cooler in the middle and the pop cooler against the south wall. We have also added Red Bull to the menu at $5.00. Again, thanks to all that helped out. Quite a few of you worked a double shift and the Captain and I really appreciate the help. And again, without the Ladies’ help, we would not have enough workers to even work the shows. Thank you Ladies!! Due to my commitments to the Divan, my special thanks go to Larry Tomes for handling the Excel spreadsheet for the closing inventory. I just realized that this has been the first time I haven’t performed a LARRY WILSON Reporter closing inventory since I created the original Excel spreadsheet when we worked the concessions at WSU Shocker Baseball home games. In other news, it was sure nice to see Veteran Patrolman Bill Davis and his Lady at the Valentine Dance. Did you know he is quite limber out on the dance floor? Also in attendance from the Patrol were Sanford Kauffman, Captain Dick Simpson, Assistant Rabban Jodie Mosier and myself with our Ladies. For March, we have a few events worth mentioning. We have the Lawn and Garden Show to work and possibly the Big Boys Toy show which is a one day show at Century II. Our Birthday/Anniversary Social is scheduled for Friday evening, March 18th at VFW with the Potentate’s Ball the following evening at the Marriott. I hope to see many of you at the ball as attendance to this one gives us triple Scimitar Award points. Until next time, keep in step! Million Dollar Band Let’s review! At the last of January the Million Dollar Band met at the Hereford House at Terradyne for our annual Dinner and Installation. Midian’s 2011 Potentate, Illustrious Sir David Pate was not able to attend. Past Potentate, Illustrious Sir Richard Schopf and his lady Rosie graced our meeting with their presence and he did the honors for the installation. The elected officers installed were: Dr. Lynn Moller, Musical Director; Dr. Ron Oliver, Band Manager; Duane Draving, Treasurer; Rick Milhon, Secretary; Quartermaster, Jim Malia; Librarian, Iven Kelty; Membership, John Matrow; and Membersat-large Steve Elliot, Jack Fordham and Art Van Dresser. The appointed officers installed were: Assistant Musical Director, Martin Geeding; Assistant Band Manager, Dan Hagan; Assistant Quartermaster and Circus Chairman, Bruce RICK MILHON Reporter Rose; the Directors of the Concert Band and DanceKatz, Lynn Moller; Director of the Polkatz, Steve Schmitter; Director of the DixieKatz, Andy Roberts; Director of the Jazzkatz, Iven Kelty; and Topics Writer, Rick Milhon. At Topics deadline time, all our groups were preparing for the February 20 Chili and Soup Feed and the DixieKatz were anticipating a gig at Maple Gardens on the 26th. The focus for the Million Dollar Band’s March schedule is preparation for the Circus. We have added new music to our folders and through rehearsals will add them to our repertoire. The Polkatz will take time out to play while you all gather for State Meeting on March 16. The Jazzkatz will provide music during the social hour at the Potentate’s Ball on March 19. Six Ladies were initiated into our Court. Welcome to Ladies Peggy Bible, Kay Bradley, Laurie Grimmett, Tracy Tabing, Jacalyn Wilson and Rena Young! We’re happy to have you with us. Our brand new American, Canadian and Kansas flags have arrived in preparation for the upcoming Grand Council Session. We will be donating our gently used ones to the brand new LOS Court in St. Louis on Feb. 19. Twenty-one Ladies and Nobles are planning to be in attendance, with several participating in the actual ceremonies, for this infrequent event. It should be an exciting weekend. Our several fundraisers lately have been very successful. We trust that everyone who purchased steaks or ribs is enjoying them. Ours have already been consumed. About 50 Ladies and Nobles partook of a very tasty Irish Stew Dinner immediately following our ceremonial in late January. By the time the March Topics comes out we will have completed another sale of Red Wheel frozen foods. Our thanks to everyone who has eaten with us or purchased from us. These fund raisers allow us to do what we do for the kids. The annual installation of officers, which is open to the public, will take place at Sunflower FOR SALE MARCH, 2011 Lodge on Saturday, March 12. The following Ladies will take their places in their respective offices: Lady Louise Meade – High Priestess, Lady Philomena Wohlford – Princess, Lady BJ Kaufman – Associate Princess, Lady Terri Wells, PHP – Recorder, Lady Cheryl Ross, PHP – Treasurer, and Lady Evelyn Brown – First Ceremonial Lady. Arami Ladies are reminded that rehearsal will be on Friday, March 11 with dinner afterward. We are happy to again support the Midian Shrine Circus with a banner at this year’s circus. Speaking of Midian, our Ladies are looking forward to providing refreshments for the Midian Ladies meeting on March 16. With an Easter theme, who knows, we may be serving chocolate bunnies. Decorations are all crafted and taking up most of Lady Phil Wohlford’s basement in preparation for the Mid-States Unit Meet at the Hyatt in October. We are busy planning the USO-type entertainment for Fun Night. I heard that the infamous “Dream Whips” may put in an appearance. There is a rumor that Marilyn Monroe and Patsy Cline will be there, too. Can’t wait! Until next time, for the last time, thistle tickles and Tigger kisses. 2011 TRUSTEES - MIDIAN SHRINE Yoshi Go Kart Engine Kohler XKE 6 Race Engine 6hp New rod and bearing in 2010 Very Fast $300 obo Noble Aaron Tabing Midian Yoshi Unit 734-0876 FOR SALE Trustee Bob Baker Trustee Randy Brown Trustee Robert Giesen MARCH, 2011 Midian Shrine Topics 2011 DIVAN - MIDIAN SHRINE Page 15 Potentate David Pate Chief Rabban Terry Schrant Assistant Rabban Jodie Mosier High Priest & Prophet Lonnie Nichols Oriental Guide Ed Day Treasurer Robert Bulman Recorder Michael J Kelley P.P. 1st Cerem.
