Recently a request was made to write down some memories
and stories each of us have with Johnny Achiles. It made
me think that the best memories and stories I have rattling
around in my mind are the accounts of friends, present and
past, as they interacted on a casual level between themselves
while living their lives. The part I played so often, through
the years, was casual observer, archivist if you will.

Any antidote about Johnny can’t be told without including
his partner in crime, Woody Jordan. The smile on my face
and the glow in my heart doesn’t come from any one event or
joke, but the echoes of their laughter and jibes at one another
time after time while they were hosting or attending some
Shrine event. These memories and recollections play like
an old movie, reels turning and film clicking, playing out the
days of our lives.

The beauty with memories is that we have so many. The exact
story is lost to time but the booming voice of Dixon Brown
still rings clear as he stands and relates some everyday event
that sounds more like a grand adventure, the way he tells it to
the spell bound Highlanders.
STATED MEETING
A Stated Business Meeting of Alzafar Shriners will be
held October 13, 2016 at 7:30 p.m., in the Alzafar Shrine
Auditorium, 901 N. Loop 1604 W. San Antonio, Texas 78232
Dinner is at 6:00 p.m., first come first served. The purpose
of this meeting is to receive and ballot on petitions and act
on such other business as might come before it.
Ray Fuller and Hal Murry laughing out loud at some
inappropriate phrase. Jim Engelmann checking on his dog
which was watching from the pick-up truck window as the
Patrol practiced on the parking-lot pad. Maybe Gene Toifl
wound up telling some unbelievable police story that most
likely included at least one cock-roach. Maybe some of
you are old enough to remember Doc Hatcher and Howard
Jones arguing over some totally insignificant point. Fred and
Ginger, Crosby and Hope, not even Martin and Lewis can
hold a candle to Ted and Bobby and their antics. The past is
just that, past, the future will bring new hope and inspiration.
Grasp the present and enjoy the time we have together. Don’t
leave anything un-said and end each day with no regrets.
YOUR 2016 DUES CARD WILL BE REQUIRED FOR
ADMITTANCE AT ALL STATED MEETINGS. BE SURE TO
BRING THESE THREE THINGS:

Is it October already? Where has the year gone? Now that
summer is over and the kids are back in school, the Shrine
is buzzing with activity. As the units get back to business,
I too have hit the ground running and in the process of
planning two back to back events for the Nobles, Masons
and their families.
CIRCUS CIRCUS CIRCUS!
Our Shrine Circus is just right around the corner and I
am ready to get this party started. By now, all of the
Noble’s circus tickets should have been received by
mail. Did you turn in your money yet? Remember,
all the monies collected for our Noble’s tickets will go
toward our Shrine for next year. Let’s make this circus
a huge SUCCESS!
First up, on Saturday, October 15th, Alzafar will be hosting
the annual Masonic Picnic coupled with the Shrine Camp
Chili Cook-Off at Camp Alzafar. All Nobles, family and
friends of our Masonic Fraternity are welcome to attend. A
friendly competition always brings out the best in us. This
year there is a category to the Chili Cook-Off, with a cash
prize for the best tasting chili among the Lodges. Taking
bragging rights and cash to your Lodge is always a plus.
Please reach out to those friends that would make great
Masons and Masons who would make great Shriners.
I would like to thank all the committee members, Nobles
and ladies who are helping out this year for our circus.
Everyone is pulling together and having a blast preparing
for this year’s event.
If you have any questions or want to help out, please
contact the Shrine office or myself.
On October 18th, the Shrine will hold its annual SPOOKTACULAR Children’s Halloween Party. This event will
take place at the Alzafar Shrine Auditorium from 6:00-8:00
pm. There will be music, dancing, food, games and trickor-treating throughout the Shrine. There will also be unit
room decorating, pumpkin carving and a costume contests.
Please contact the office ASAP at 210-496-1625 and let us
know how many of you will be attending. It will be the best
Halloween party in town, so be sure to mark your calendars
and come dressed in your Halloween best! This is a great
opportunity to come together and bring the whole family
for some GHOULISH fun! I am currently working on the budget for next year. If
you have any ideas for 2017 or if you would like to see
an item added to next year’s budget, please let me know.
We have so many big plans for next year and I hope we
can get them all accomplished within a year. It’s going
to be an exciting year.
Cheryl and I want to thank you for all you do for our
children and our Shrine. Your support is so overwhelming
and we are so proud to be by your side. It is truly an honor
and a privilege to serve you. This is just another great opportunity to introduce friends
and colleagues to the Shrine and the good work we
do. Remember, we are always on the look out for a great
Shriner. If you know someone who would be interested
in learning more about the Shrine, this would be a great
opportunity to invite them and their families. May God bless you all!
I look forward to seeing everyone in his or her Halloween
best.

100TH ANNIVERSARY BIRTHDAY BASH AND GALA
BUSINESS, BUCKETS, AND THE SHRINE
It will be a short report this month. Everyone wants to know how
the Gala did, but we don’t have the numbers yet. Finalizing the
final expenses and revenues is very slow and time consuming. We
are also still chasing down people that bid on items and still need to
pay for them and pick them up. We will have the final numbers by
the upcoming Stated Meeting and for the next Achbar article.
There have, recently, been some suggestions that Shriners Hospitals
for Children, Inc. (“Shriners”) is without financial challenges. As
evidence to support that assertion, it has been suggested that Shriners
enjoys a 10 billion dollar asset base. Let us examine that issue. The
general endowment held by Shriners is currently at, about, 8 billion
dollars. In 2008, and for a period thereafter, that endowment was
very much lower. As you will imagine, the value of the endowment
and the income it produces changes with the investment environment.
In addition to the endowment, we receive donations from our Shrine
family and others, some insurance payments, and some other
miscellaneous income. Together, those income streams provide
our annual operating budget for the hospitals. Even given those
income streams, in every year that I can recall, we have operated
the hospitals at a deficit. That is, for example, the primary reason
that various Imperial officers proposed to close Galveston and
other hospitals in 2009. Now, through a great deal of work at the
hospitals and at the corporate level, our costs have been dramatically
reduced. Nonetheless, the hospital budget for next year will also
be one showing a significant deficit. As to our capital assets, our
hospital buildings and so forth, those are cost centers, not income
streams. They require continuous maintenance and, from time to
time, replacement. Because of that, they only have potential for
providing funding for operations if they are rented or sold. Clearly, if
we consider the hospital system of value and taking care of kids our
Mission; we cannot rest on our laurels.
RECORDER’S CORNER
By: T-Bone Tommy Leverett
Nana Lisa and Papa T-Bone are looking forward to next month. Yes,
I know the Shrine Circus is November 3rd-6th this year and I know
Gary and his crew will have a record setting Circus that will benefit
our Shrine Temple, but the real reason we are excited is this will be
“Peanuts” Dezlin’s first Shrine Circus. Our Grandson is a Big Boy
now at 20 months old. It seems like yesterday Lisa and I were taking
our two kids to the Shrine Circus.
We have finished up the LED project with the new energy efficient
lights installed in the inside of the main building, the Directors Staff/
Roustabouts unit rooms, the Lodge and the transportation barn.
Now that you can read the expiration date on some of the can goods,
some of you have some cleaning to do.
Don’t forget if you want to make your Unit Room shine please let
me know. Our office can help you with paint and ceiling tiles. I
was visiting with one of Units and they are working on putting a
more modern look to their room, because they are appealing to the
younger new Shriner. Does your Unit room look like it did in the
1960’s? I have asked the maintenance staff to clean the kitchen
areas in your room every 6 months. If you see something that needs
attention or repair, please call me so I can work with Jesse to keep
this place looking good.
Moving to another part of the issue, what is our mission? As we
know, the Shrine started in 1872 when, it appears; our founders were
seeking to create a Masonically based organization that could provide
an entertaining addition to the then serious and somber environment
of Masonic lodge meetings. These thirteen men founded our first
Temple in New York City, but it was not long, actually far less than
fifty years, before the individual Temples added philanthropic work
to their social agenda. In fact, as early as 1888 and 1889 individual
Temples were providing relief work and support in local disasters.
That tradition of philanthropy grew over the years until, at the 1920
Imperial Session, Noble Freeland Kendrick (LuLu) is reported to have
proposed the creation of Shriners Hospitals for Crippled Children,
the predecessor of our current Shriners Hospitals for Children.
Unhappily, the original tenor of the meeting appears to have been
unfavorable for the proposal, but then Noble Forrest Adair (Yaarab)
rose and gave his famous “Bubbles Speech”. He suggested that, like
the lyrics of the song, Shriners had largely been “blowing bubbles”
in limiting their efforts to those that please themselves and that it was
time to do more; not in replacement of the social aspect of the Shrine,
but in addition to it and for the benefit of the children. The conclusion
of his speech produced cheering and, in the end, a unanimous vote to
create our hospitals. I believe that those hospitals and the children
they serve are our Mission! Not because I say so, but because those
Shriners who helped in the yellow fever outbreaks, the floods, the
earthquakes, and other disasters before 1920 and then created and
continue to operate a children’s hospital system have proven it to be
so.
Together we can keep Alzafar Rocking for years to come!

DIRECTORS STAFF
THE ANTIQUE CARRIAGE UNIT
By: Charley “D”
By: Bud Martin
Summer is over and another year is almost gone. One of the first
orders of business is to remind everyone that we have a Ceremonial
to put on October 29th. You need to help get ready as well as plan
to be there to help put it on. We follow the Ceremonial with annual
Shrine Circus in November. This year it is imperative that we have
everyone’s help to make it a rousing success. Then comes our
election of officers for the unit for 2017. Be there to exercise your
right to vote.
CIRCUS+CIRCUS+CIRCUS===THINK CIRCUS
By the time this article is printed, we will have only three
parades left to participate in. One of them will be held in
Floresville, the Peanut Festival on Sat. Oct 8th. Line-up will
be at 8:00 AM and start time will be at 10:00 AM. I hope
everyone can make it and I am looking forward to seeing
everybody there. Remember, we are always looking for
good men who love cars and also men who have cars that
they would enjoy driving in our unit. If interested, call our
President Noble James Hoyo at (210) 872-0619 or myself,
Noble Bud Martin at (210) 680-6717.
The shrine has lost a number of members in the past year and some
here recently. I am sure there are others I don’t remember, however,
two come to mind that were both dedicated and loyal Shrine
members. They were both friends of mine as they were also friends
of many of you. They were Nobles Warren Jones and Noble Harry
Frey. I ask that you join me in asking the Supreme Grand Master
above to comfort the families of all our departed Brothers in their
time of sorrow as they will surely be missed by all.
The weather should be cooler than what we have been
experiencing during September. I also hope that everyone has
a great time at our circus for this year. It is a fun event to work
and enjoy the festivities.
The bad news is that it is time to put the ole spit and shine
polish on the Mustang to get her ready of the upcoming parade.
Until then, take good care and above all, drive carefully. Until
then remember, “No man stands so tall as when he stoops to
help a child.” God Bless.
Our sick, lame, and lazy report is a little better with Johnny Achilles
still having problems, Ed Lee seems to be some better and Viviano
is also ailing. Some of us get “older” but not better as we are just
wore out, however, as long as the Good Lord Above keeps us going,
we have so much to be thankful for and I can assure you we are.
Let’s recap and remember we have our Second Section Ceremonial
on October 29th, and our annual Alzafar Shrine Circus on November
3rd thru 6th. Last but not least, your support of the unit is needed
at least once a month, so don’t say you are too busy to take time to
attend the meetings. This your unit and you are a big part of it so
show a little pride by supporting it. We need YOU! You also need
to attend the Shrine Stated Meetings once a month which is really
not asking too much.

ORIENTAL GUIDE MUST
BE SELECTED WISELY
SENIORS
By: Roger Hopkins
The Alzafar Seniors met in the Parlors on September 1st
with 31 members and 1 guest in attendance. The meeting
was opened by our President, Noble David Kiebaum, and an
invocation was given by our acting Chaplain, Noble Ralph
McLeod. We rendered honors to the America and Texas flags
and then enjoyed another delicious meal of cheese enchilada
and pinto beans, bread and iced tea, served by personnel from
Grady’s.
When members of a Shrine Center elect a Noble to the office of
Oriental Guide, they are virtually starting that Noble through the
Divan on the assumption that he will prove qualified for and worthy
of advancement to the high office of Illustrious Potentate. Hence
it is quite evident that the nomination for Oriental Guide should be
based upon through and accurate evaluation of character, ability,
prestige, interest, and experience.
A Noble can be a good fellow, a hard worker, and a loyal Shriner…
and yet lack the basic qualifications, which make a good Potentate.
Unless a Noble is fully qualified for the job, he is unfair both to
himself and to his Temple in seeking the office or in permitting his
fellow Nobles to support and promote his candidacy.
We suspended our business meeting and went directly to our
featured entertainment. Ms Mariana Ornelas, a Paraguayan
trained harpist, provided some very beautiful music with
a South American flare. She played a harp that is from
Paraguay, very portable but with the most melodic sound. Ms
Ornelas can be contacted at [email protected]. At
the conclusion of her presentation, the members, guests and
wives moved to the foyer where Noble Art Loera took several
photographs of the group for the Circus program.
Each Shrine Temple needs and requires able high-type leadership.
The normal starting out point of that leadership is the office of
Oriental Guide. The following checklist may prove helpful in
evaluating potential candidates for the office of Oriental Guide.
However, no thinking man would be so naïve or presumptuous as
to believe that any one Noble could possibly embody all the virtues,
talents, and qualifications which are set forth in the checklist.
Nevertheless, the list has practical value…for self-evaluation by
the Nobles whose ultimate aspiration is the office of Illustrious
Potentate…and for advance evaluation of candidates by the voting
members.
Our next meeting will be on the 6th of October and we all
look forward to seeing many of you there.
1. He should have good business judgment.
2. He should be friendly and outgoing, a good mixer.
3. He should have the ability to express himself clearly in language
that will make us proud of him, rather than apologetic.
4. He should present an imposing personal appearance.
5. He should be able to hold his own and advance the interest of
his Temple and Freemasonry in high places as well as among the
humble.
6. He should be a devoted Mason and constantly promote the interest
of Freemasonry everywhere.
7. He should be proud, yet humble.
8. He should have good Character and a past open to investigation.
9. He should be a leader, have good standing in his community, and
be influential in its affairs.
10. He should be financially secure.
11. He should be in good health, full of energy, and vitality.
12. He should be able to devote ample time to his duties.
13. He should be a man who, when he appears anywhere in public,
you will be proud of and not be apologetic for his shortcomings.
14. His wife should be able to understand his devotion to duty;
realize that he is Potentate and not she; be able to dress and wear
appropriate clothing, and be familiar with the social amenities.
Remember she is destined to become Alzafar’s First Lady.
Nominations for Oriental Guide should be based upon thorough and
accurate evaluation of character, ability, and interest. Remember,
you are electing your spokesman and standard-bearer and the one
who will represent you throughout the World. We have a great
Talent in our Temple. Let’s seek it! Let us be fair and sincere. Let
us get the very best we can.

CHAPARRALS
By: Chris Celis
TSMPA Past Pres. 2012
October is here and so begins the cooler temps in San
Antonio and the holidays will be here before you know
it. A few events on the horizon for the unit will be the
Masonic Picnic, which I heard the unit has something
fun cooked up, and the annual Halloween party at the
shrine. I know for a fact the Chaparrals have some of
the best candies on that night, so bring your little ghouls
and goblins out as we are participating in both these
events. There is a few parades on the horizon and we
are still regrouping so don’t count us out just yet. The
Chaparrals are still here…
September was special for the Chaparrals as we dedicated
our room to Bob Holt. A plaque was made and the lovely
Linda attended as the guys renamed our unit room. I
missed the event due to a family event, but glad to see
the younger guys do something so special for a man who
was near and dear to all of us.
Bob was my inspiration and mentor as I went through
the shrine. I followed Bob and Linda from the time they
were elected to the TSMPA line to his last day in office.
I later ran for office of TSMPA and they were there at
my installation and were present at all my events till I
stepped out of office. One memory (I have many), that
I will hold near and dear is Bob and me building a car in
his garage for obstacle. It would be one of the last cars
we would work on together and drive. I still recall that
week, we built a car from my original unit body and a
chassis from another, and of course it took fastest time!
I will always hold a place in my heart for Bob.
I could go on for hours retelling stories of our travels, or
the many practices we had to to dial in our TSA routine,
or who could pull the fastest time at Obstacle because
that would mean someone would have bragging rights
for the next year. I have had some good times in the
shrine and I know there is plenty more memories to be
made. On that note, its move quote time--Have a good
morning, and if I don’t see you later, good afternoon,
good evening and a good night.

ROADSTER RUMBLINGS
on the schedule for next year. That works for me.
By: el Bucko
Only one more parade this year, and it will be the Canyon
Lake Christmas Parade in Sattler. This parade will have a
float (trailer) for the wives and families of Shriners. You
need to let the Temple office know which of your loved
ones will ride on the trailer. The weather for Sattler is
often the worst we face all year, but the warm reception
we get from the folks there make it a joy to ride. The
Chili provided by the Canyon Lake Masons and Shriners
after the parade is also not to be missed.
Uncle Bud says a conscience is what hurts when all your
other parts feel so good.
We had another good turn-out for the Kendall County
Fair parade in Boerne. Seven shiny Roadsters showed
up, but unfortunately, only six were able to continue.
No breakdowns during the parade. Yeah! It had been
a long time since our last parade and like most of the
parade units-we were more than ready. The folks in
Boerne were very welcoming which makes the effort
worthwhile. The weather even gave us a break from the
rain long enough to get in a parade.
Spoke briefly with the Chief Rabban about parades for
next year. He indicated that there will be plenty parades
While we are thanking all these nobles, we need to thank
everybody that put the circus party together as it was
super. It was an honor to have the Big Man from the
circus in our club room where he gave us some real good
points on the circus along with some suggestions.
HONOR GUARD
By: Al Aranda
Starting off reminding all the Nobles about working on
the Buck A Lines and ads for the circus, before we know
it, the circus will be here, and we have to start getting our
uniforms ready so we can look spiffy.
Nobles, don’t forget to work on the tickets for the BarB-Que Grill. Remember that this is a fundraiser for the
club. We should be getting ready for the chili cook off
and to support the club and have lots of fun as always.
We are going to win again. We also need to get ready for
the ceremonial coming up and the dance that evening.
We need to thank the line up that supported the club at
the stated meeting and at the Hondo parade. We also
need to thank the lovely ladies that supported the club at
the Hondo parade. At the same time, a big thank you to
all the Nobles that worked real hard in putting together
the tail gate after the parade. It was awesome.
May the great architect put his arms around all of us to
keep us in good health and safe.
hang out. Also, when I talk about the children that have
grown up at camp, I am talking about the ones we called
“Camp Brats”. They were always very respectful and not
afraid of the adults. They made a lot of new friends, both
with their young friends, as well as some of us old people.
They did not get into trouble and most always, behaved
real well and never getting into serious trouble. They
grew up to be real outstanding young men and women.
CAMP ALZAFAR
By: Charley Davenport
I recently sold my cabin at Camp Alzafar which I have
had the pleasure of owning for about 30 years. They
were 30 years of the most enjoyable times of my life.
Camp Alzafar is a jewel and we are fortunate enough as
a shrine temple to have it as many other temples envy us
because we do. A lot of people do not understand what
Camp Alzafar has to offer. First and foremost, it is a
place to make new friends and cultivate the friendships
you have, as it thrives on the social activities that occur.
Secondly, it is a really great place for children to grow up.
Thirdly, it provides a natural setting with the scenery and
wildlife that provide a very relaxed atmosphere. I can
attest to the social aspects as we always looked forward
to the weekends at Camp, when we would have group get
togethers to play cards, attend one of the dances, or just
I am proud to have been a cabin owner at Camp Alzafar
and I realize that it is not everyone's cup of tea, however,
it has a lot to offer to Shriners with young children, as
it is an environment that is great for them. I know not
everyone agrees with me on this, but I think we all are
very lucky to have such a facility at our disposal for all
of Alzafar’s Shriners to use. Remember, we are all part
owners of this great facility. I may not be a cabin owner,
but I hope to be able to still be a part of our “Camp”.

CANYON LAKE SHRINE CLUB
were members of the Divan, Stuart Simms, Treasurer,
Tom Leverett, Recorder and Illustrious Potentate, John
Dunn, who spoke about the upcoming Shrine Circus.
By: Lee Stroman
The Canyon Lake Shrine Club met on September 12th

PATROL
October will take us to Floresville to participate in the
Peanut Festival parade, the Chili Cook Off, and the
opportunity to walk the Hot Sands Ceremonial, which
is scheduled for October 29th. Should your unit or club
be in need of members, this will be your opportunity
to meet and greet potential Patrolmen, Band, Motorized
Operators, or just plain card carriers. Now is also the
time to start thinking of what you are going to Noble up
at the Circus and sign up for a great experience.
By: P.P. GI Flores
September is when the Chief Rabban, or, better yet,
the Circus Director General, gives us a memorable
way to kick off the 2016 Circus, which is scheduled
for November. What a blast we had with a circus act,
clowns everywhere, some in makeup and others were
just clowning around. If you were not there, you missed
out. We also have gotten the kids back to school and we
saw the first day of Autumn, hopefully looking forward
to much cooler weather.
El Segundo
A special thank you from the Circus Director
General for getting all the Nobles Tickets
together.
