Ararat Shrine Celebrates its
75th Year of Bringing the
Shrine Circus to Kansas City
November 11-14, 2010
T
his year marks the 75th Anniversary of the Ararat Shrine Circus, and
your help is needed to make this “Diamond Anniversary Year” the best
ever. It takes the support of each and every Noble and Lady to ensure
that everyone who wants to attend the Circus is able to do so. Have you purchased your Mom and Dad pins yet? Remember, without your participation
we would not be able to send “Children of All Ages” to the Circus, who otherwise would be unable to attend. A few months ago a book of Circus Coupons worth $100 towards the purchase of Circus tickets was mailed to every
Noble. We thank everyone who has returned their book with a donation, and
we look forward to receiving the other books that haven’t been returned yet.
Just a reminder, every book that was sent out is numbered and the Noble that
received the book is responsible for returning the book to the Shrine, even if
they are unable to make a donation. If you cannot afford the entire book but
still would like to contribute you can purchase single coupons.
B. J. Richardson,
We would like to give a special
Chief Rabban
round of applause to our “Storefront
Super Circus Salesmen.” They are a group of dedicated Nobles
who collect in all kinds of weather, and are very much appreciated
for all their hard work. We would also like to thank the members
of the Mounted Guard Unit for sponsoring the Friday morning
Circus performance for the school children, so they can attend the
Circus free of charge. The proceeds of their Mounted Guard Bass
Tournament is used for this special event.
Listed on page 13 are the 2010 Ararat Shrine Circus Incentives. Remember, for every dollar you turn in for Circus credits
you will receive equal number of Crown of Honor Jewel Points.
Nobles and Ladies, once again thank you for your continued support and we look forward to having the best Circus ever. Let’s make
our “75th Diamond Anniversary” Circus shine brilliantly!!
llustrious Sir Kevin Sleyster called
the August, 2010, meeting to order
at 7:30 PM in the Frank S. Land
Ballroom (Rooms A & B). Our Temple was under a double and trusty
guard, and there were none present
save members of our order.
Chaplain Loyd Gentry gave the
Invocation and remembered our
Nobles who had been visited by the
Black Camel.
The Legion of Honor presented
the colors.
In accordance with long standing tradition, Noble Possum Belly
moved to dispense with the reading
of the minutes of the last meeting,
and the motion was passed.
The Legion of Honor presented the colors. The Chanters led the
singing of the National Anthem.
Treasurer Dan Smothers presented his report, which assured us
that we are still solvent. Our income
for the year exceeds our expenses, and
our total expenses for this year are
approximately $94,000 lower than
for the same time period last year.
Noble Dan also reported that the
meeting was being held in Rooms

SEPTEMBER 2010
One Moment
of Your Time
Please!
By KEVIN SLEYSTER
Hello Nobles, Ladies and Friends,
I do believe that the weather has finally broken and we may have some
heat relief in the near future. I hope everyone fared well during the heat of
the summer.
We have many exciting functions coming up in the month of September.
We will probably be at CSSA in Oklahoma City when this newsletter is published. I trust a good time will be had by all and our units will have fantastic
competition results.
The Ararat Family Picnic is scheduled for September 12th at Blue
Springs Lake, and we are hoping to bring back that old-fashioned family
picnic atmosphere with a BBQ cookout and fun and games for the kids. We
hope to see you all there with your families for a great time. It would be
helpful if you brought your lawn chairs to ensure everyone has comfortable
seating. Don’t forget to RSVP to the temple office.
The Potentate’s Golf Tournament will be held on September 13th at the
Fred Arbanas Golf Course in Kansas City. The Patrol is working hard to
make this a huge success. Anyone can play so hurry and get your registration
in before it is too late.
The Fall Swap Meet will be held at the Lee’s Summit Auto Auction on
September 17–19 and they are looking for nobles to help with this event.
Your support is greatly appreciated for any day of the event or all three if you
can. September usually provides us with beautiful weather and we are hoping
this holds true this year.
The American Royal Parade is also in September on the 25th. This is
always a great parade and we appreciate the support from Ararat.
We have several functions planned in October. The Chili Cook-off is
scheduled for October 9th and it should be a great time with a variety of chili
for every taste bud. There will be prizes for the best tasting chili and we are
looking for registrants. If you know non-Shriners that can cook, please ask
them to participate.
We are looking forward to a great Fall Ceremonial in October and want
to push for nobles and their ladies to attend to provide support for the new
nobles coming in. We also want to encourage you to bring in new members
in order keep our fraternity strong. Members are our livelihood and the only
way to gain quality members is through your recruitment efforts.
Let’s have a great fall.
Fraternally Yours,
Kevin Sleyster

Hospital Van Drivers
If you are a member of Ararat Shrine you are encouraged to call the Hospital Transportation Office (816) 923-5429 or (816) 923-1319 and become
one of those men who transport our children to the St. Louis Hospital. This
will be one of the most rewarding activities you will ever experience.
We encourage every man in Ararat to become a driver. It will require you
to go to your State Driver’s License Office and obtain a copy of your driving
record. As a matter of fact, all drivers need to bring their records up to date
in this manner.
A big Thank You to the following Nobles who have driven the Hospital
Van in the month of July.

Guardian Angels to our Rescue

or several years the Hospital
Transportation Office has been
in dire need of a quality office
copy machine. We have been using
small computer printers and they just
don’t fill the bill. Recently two guardian angels came to our rescue. Eric
Vochartzer and Tosh Harding of GFI
Digital Inc, located in Kansas City,
donated and installed a Sharp model
MX2700N color/black and white, printer/copier. This is a top grade copier
that can fill any need we have in a speedy manner. It has greatly increased
the output of our office responsibilities. Eric is the Account Manager on the
left in the picture and Tosh is the Technician, pictured on the right. Also
pictured is the new copier. GFI is now a corporate sponsor of the Hospital
Transportation Program. GFI has helped hundreds of young patients in the
expedition of their paperwork, resulting in faster acceptance in the program,
among many other benefits. All Shriners at Ararat Shrine thank GFI and
these two gentlemen for their very generous donation.

Don & Cliff’s Most
Excellent Adventure
By Don Patterson,
Hospital Transportation Driver
I
was sitting at home when the phone rang. “Don, this
is Joe, your mission, if you wish to accept it, is to meet
up with Cliff Hubert at the Temple on Monday at 0830
hours for a 0900 departure. Your assignment –should you
accept - is to deliver a patient and his mother to the Cincinnati Burn Center. A very important package from the
Warsaw Shrine Club will be stowed in the back of the van
with a bag of beanie babies. It is imperative that these items
arrive safely by Tuesday at 1300 hours. P.S. Do you or Cliff
speak Spanish? This message will self-destruct after your
response.” I replied, “Joe, I think you’ve been watching
too many reruns of Mission Impossible, again.”
Cliff and I both accepted. It’s always an honor to be
chosen and very humbling to assist our kids with their
continued treatments. Cliff and I decided to divide our
trip into three parts. The first section is to reach Florence, Kentucky by night fall. Cliff chose the short straw
and drove through some of the most torrential hurricanelike thunderstorms I’ve ever experienced. But Cliff, being
from Buffalo, New York assured me that this was nothing
compared to the 20 ft. snow drifts he traversed every day,
UPHILL, to go to work at the GM Plant where he toiled
daily in front of a blast furnace that was so hot it melted the
fillings out of his teeth.
The new van performed as expected and delivered us
all safely to our motel. The Microtel is owned by a fellow Noble and the accommodations are fit for a King,
Prince or Potentate. We turned in early knowing the second section required us to deliver our patient and cargo to
the hospital. We left the motel early and took the scenic
route (made a wrong turn) to the Burn Center. Cincinnati is still as lovely a town as I remembered, from another
trip, when Howard Silvers took me on a similar scenic tour.
We arrived around 11:00 am giving us time to deliver our
patient and packages. The very important package was a
John Deere Tricycle with trailer. The ladies at the reception desk call themselves “Lucy and Ethel” and were the
first to test drive Warsaw’s gift to the hospital. After posing
appropriately with the gift, they asked that a staff member
from the second floor ICU come to the lobby and see what
the boys from KC have for them to test drive. Cliff and I
were escorted by the head flight nurse to ICU so the staff
could thank Ararat for the John Deere and beanie babies.
After spending a time with patients, we began the
third and final section, the long drive home. While traveling, Cliff thought that our passengers wanted to know if
he played the banjo. But I told him that they were asking permission to use the bathroom. Obviously my Spanish is better than his. Through more storms, which I had
the privilege of driving, we delivered everyone safely back
home. This concludes Don and Cliff’s MOST EXCELLENT ADVENTURE. P.S. Enjoy the photos.

M
ore than 700 burn survivors, families, caregivers, burn care professionals, firefighters and emergency workers will come together for the 2010
World Burn Congress, hosted by Shriners
Hospitals for Children® — Galveston and
the University of Texas Medical Branch
Blocker Burn Unit, Oct. 20-23, 2010.
The World Burn Congress is a forum
for those affected by burn injuries to share
stories, provide support and increase their
knowledge of burn recovery. The conference also provides a learning experience
for burn care professionals to better understand the issues that impact burn survivors’ lives, as well as a platform for firefighters and other emergency responders
to enable closure as they see burn survivors and their families living meaningful
lives.
The conference is organized each year
by the Phoenix Society, the leading national nonprofit dedicated to empowering and
educating people affected by burn injuries.
Representatives from Shriners Hospitals
for Children® will play active roles in this
planning the 2010 meeting, including local
chairperson Megan Polak, a physical therapist at Shriners Hospitals for Children®
— Galveston, and Walter Meyer, M.D.,
who will help plan this year’s educational
components.
New to the World Burn Congress are
sessions dedicated to pediatric burn issues.
These sessions will allow children and their
caregivers to address specific issues that affect these young survivors, as well as provide a support network for the caregivers.
Shriners Hospitals for Children® in both
Galveston and Houston will be instrumental in developing these sessions.
The conference will be held at the
Moody Gardens Hotel, Spa and Convention Center on Galveston Island. For more
information, visit the World Burn Congress page on the Phoenix Society’s web
site or download the registration packet.

to get out there and make people happy while we’re being happy. I’ve said it
before, but it’s really amazing to see four or five hundred men working long
hours on their feet, for free, and smiling all the while; must be something
special about being a Shriner.
I can recommend, without reservation, spending a few hours working
at the Ararat Shrine Circus. If you don’t know the schedule, it’s November
11 through November 14, and you can work performances Thursday morning and Thursday evening, Friday morning and Friday evening, Saturday
morning, afternoon, and evening, and Sunday afternoon and evening. The
Thursday and Friday morning performances are “private” performances, for

Food
&Wine
T
By STEVE DOWDY
here are some points of etiquette that are normally observed when in a restaurant. Of
course, some of these little touches
can be forgotten when serving wine
to guests in your home, and there are
some that you should do your best to
follow, wherever you are.
After the wine has been opened,
tasted, accepted, and poured, a red
wine bottle should be placed to
the right of the host, on the table.
White wines, being chilled, should
be placed in an ice bucket near the
table, and within reach of the host.
In a restaurant, the waiter should
monitor the amount of wine in the
glasses, refill them regularly, and
suggest that the host should buy another bottle when he has emptied
the last bottle. In your home, you
will most likely pass the bottle to
your guest and let him fill his own
glass. But don’t forget, it’s your job,
as a gracious host, to get another
bottle whenever that one runs dry;
which means that you should buy
more than one bottle before you embark on this dinner party. Of course,
you really need to be conscientious
and don’t over serve you guests, or
yourself.
Occasionally the wine may be
“off,” or simply not to your liking.
It would probably be a good idea to
try a bottle of the same wine; variety,
label, and vintage, before you serve
it to a large group of guests. Even
then, it is possible to get a bad bottle in a batch of otherwise excellent
wine. If you do get a bad bottle, then
you should not serve it, or drink it
yourself. Most restaurants will usually replace a bad bottle, but the corner liquor store may not be so accommodating the next day.
If you’re drinking wine from a
Dixie Cup while sitting on the tailgate of your truck on a country road,
you can ignore everything I’ve said.
But you still have to remember that
somebody has to drive home.

fish fry! Four of Wooden’s teams finished with
30-0 records. In addition to all of this, he was the first person to enter the
Basketball Hall of Fame as both a player and a coach.
Wooden’s success fed upon itself, making recruitment a breeze. High
school stars begged to play for him. Their parents supported and encouraged them. One player who dared challenge him was 6 foot-11 center Bill
Walton and his flowing red hair.
At the start of Walton’s senior season, in 1973, U.C.L.A. had won 75
consecutive games and 2 N.C.A.A. titles. When Wooden walked into the
locker room before the first practice and saw Walton’s just trimmed, but
still long hair, he said, “Bill, the hair’s still too long. We’re sure going to
miss you on this team.” Bill Walton jumped on his bike, raced back to the
barber shop, got his head almost shaved, and made it back for the last half
hour of practice.
Upon hearing of his former coach’s death Bill Walton said, “I thank
John Wooden every day for all his selfless gifts, his lessons, his time, his vision, and especially his patience. This is why I call him coach.” “A coach,”
as defined by Wooden, “is someone who can give correction without causing resentment.”
Other Woodenisms worth remembering: “Be prepared and be honest.” “Don’t let what you cannot do interfere with what you can do.” “If
you don’t have time to do it right, when will you have time to do it over?”
“It isn’t what you do, but how you do it.” “Make every day your masterpiece.”

we met in Bennett Auditorium. The
Treasurer’s Report was approved.
Liberty Shrine Club presented
donations to the Circus Fund and
to the Needle Guild in memory of
Lady Pat Shackelford. The Carroll
County Shrine Club donated to the
Cornerstone Fund and the Circus,
and Noble Tom Burke, Temple Director, presented a check from Paula

and donated back to the Temple.
Thanks, Paula. The Oriental Band
presented a First Place Trophy received at the Sugar Creek Parade.
Chief Rabban B. J. Richardson
reported on the status of collections
and donations to the Circus Fund
and told us that the most successful
Club or Unit was the Greeters, followed by the Legion of Honor, Director’s Staff, Sedalia Shrine Club,

$88,442. In 2010, total losses were
$8,000 less than in the first seven
months of 2009. Also in 2010, the
restaurant acquired a new, more
up-to date cash register and order
tracking system, repaired and maintained fixed equipment, and increased the food quality. Insurance
costs have increased $12,000 since
the period of 2007 to 2009, but our
payroll costs have declined by 6%.
The bottom line is that the restaurant is losing less now than in the
past.
First Ceremonial Master Maurice Camerlynck told us all about
the 2010 Family Picnic, to be held
on September 12, at Shelter House
D at Blue Springs Lake. It’s going to
be an old fashioned picnic, so bring
your favorite food, snacks, lawn
chairs, games, and other stuff you
might want. The Temple will supply meat and drinks.
Our next Ceremonial will be
October 16. All candidates’ names
must be read in a stated meeting
before the Ceremonial. We cannot
add candidates at the last minute.

Hospital Chairman Ed Stowell told us that everything is going

Nobles that
Our meetings are full of activity. The ladies are making
things for the Children’s Hospitals. We send boxes to the
hospitals twice a year in May and November. Some of our
ladies are busy on the sewing machines making matching
shorts and tops, surgical hats, halters for use during x-rays,
robes and pajamas. Other ladies are cutting, sewing, and
stuffing Raggedy Ann and Andy dolls. There are many
ladies busily embroidering squares for quilts. Other ladies

his is going to be short and sweet this month. We had a great turnout for the meeting at
Tim’s Pizza, seems that this club loves to eat. It was great to see some of the group that
hasn’t made it out lately. We enjoyed the two new couples that joined our club. These
young guys have some great ideas and I hope they continue to speak up and give us some help
with the Car Show.
The August Social at the Rib Crib was well attended, even with the hot weather. I was just
wondering if John Saul ate his usual salad since Lois was missing in action.
We ended up with one group taking the tour of Boulevard Brewery and then it was on to
a great Mexican restaurant, El Patron. We had some of the club just meet us there for lunch.
I know it is a little early, but please make plans to join us for the Christmas Party. It will be
held at Adams Pointe, just like last year, and the cost is $60.00 a couple. This was a great place
to have it.
Dave Krevitz and I finished painting the trailer. Thanks to Cliff Hubert for loaning me a
new pair of pants. You just have to watch him with a box knife. Remember, we have the Swap
Meet September 17-19. Your help is needed to keep things running.
I haven’t heard if anyone in the club is going to CSSA. If you are make sure and let us know
how things went. Also, check your Shrine News for the list of upcoming parades.
Guess this wasn’t that short. That’s all for now folks.

so to speak. I might add, we filled the place
with happy, satisfied and well fed Shriners
and their Ladies.
The grapevine tells us that Lady Roberta Hunsperger is still fighting a valiant
battle with Shingles. We sure miss you and wish
you a speedy recovery.
Our next BSSC meeting will be on the 4th
Monday night in September, which is September 27th, and will be held at the usual place, Post
#499, American Legion Building on 7 Hwy in
Blue Springs, MO. Call any one of us, we’ll tell
you how to find us.
ATTENTION!!! FUTURE PLANS!! Set
aside the date of Sunday, October 17, from 2:00
pm till 5:00 pm. Once again the BSSC will be
holding another Texas Hold-Em Poker Tournament at “Side Pockets” in Blue Springs. There
will be food and drink specials and the cash prizes
will depend upon the number of players. Ladies
are also invited to play if they can play poker. As
with our very successful events in the past, an entrance fee of $20.00 is required to play. For those
of you who do not wish to play poker there is
food, drink and giant screen TV’s to watch. So for
a great time with our BSSC friends, we hope to see
you at “Side Pockets.”
Until next time when we can once again get
together, remember; don’t do anything I wouldn’t
enjoy. Kinda leaves the door wide open.

Ole Cars
By DICK LEWIS, SCRIBE
O
ur August meeting was held at the Temple on Monday, August 2nd, with three officers and ten
members in attendance. We were once again honored to have our Liaison Officer, 2nd Ceremonial Master Clarence Kirby with us. Our Director, Noble Gary Seger, as promised, passed out
new tan slacks to each member in attendance. These slacks are to replace the old, original tan slacks that
were issued several years ago. He also reminded everyone to purchase their Circus tickets and Mom and
Dad pins. We also will need the help of all members to work the upcoming Swap Meet on September
17-19th.
Many of you have seen the featured car of this month pictured below, and owned by our Past Director, Noble Ben Kropf and Lady Nancy. It is a 1935 Hupmobile, 4-door Sedan and just recently returned
from a 3,000 mile round trip from Lee’s Summit to Portsmouth, New Hampshire and back, where the
Annual National Hupmobile Meet was held from July 12th thru July 18th. Twenty-One Hupmobiles
and their owners were in attendance touring the Coast of New Hampshire and Maine. This automobile
was produced in the U.S. from 1909
until 1940. Noble Ben and Lady
Nancy, along with their little pet
dog Toby held the record of traveling the most miles to the Meet. A
few problems were encountered but
were all fixed. Ben says that was too
far to travel in a vintage vehicle. No
more long trips. They are also the
proud owners of a beautiful 1958
Ford Retractable.
Our August Dinner Social was
held on Monday, August 9th at the
Corner Café in Liberty, with 20
members, Ladies and guests in attendance. Our next Dinner Social will be held on Monday, September 15th at V’s Restaurant on 40
Hwy; be there by 6:30 pm.
Our get well list includes Nobles Vaughn Hossman who was hospitalized in late July. Also, Marty
Hopkins and Past Directors Don Barham and Paul Brewer, who was also hospitalized briefly in late July.
We wish them all good health.

uly was a fun month for the Mini Model T’s. We started out with the annual 4th of July parade in
Sugar Creek. Many of the veteran members were there for the festivities. While Don Perry did
not parade with the unit he and his lady did join the rest of us for the usual dinner at Ernie’s. This
was in lieu of our usual Wednesday meeting for the month of July.
Because everyone enjoyed our dinner at the Olive Garden on Memorial Day, we decided to get
together on the 18th for another dinner. This time we had it at the Smokehouse in Independence. We
hoped that some of the former members like Dan Haskell and his lady would again join all of our families along with our liaison Steve Johnson and his family. This is what makes the members of the Shrine
family so much fun.
Congratulations to all of the T’s that sold onions this year. We sold 1,000 pounds of onions this year
for the temple. This is double what we did last year. It was a lot of work, but it was a lot of fun talking to
our loyal customers again. As word gets out maybe we can do better next year.
On a more personal note, congratulations go out to our President, James (Jamie) Blackburn for his
first Crown of Honor Jewel Award. Jamie has worked hard for the unit and the Temple. While Jamie
isn’t into it for the notoriety or awards, it is great to see him get recognition from the Temple for work
well done.
If having fun with members of a unit with your whole family and running around in little cars sounds
like something you would like to do, give our President, James Blackburn or our Director, Jared Hargrave a call and set up a visit with the Mini Model T’s. We would be happy to have you as a guest for a
fun night at one of our meetings.

reetings Nobles and Ladies,
I truly hope this finds everyone doing well.
A sample of the new Provost
phone book was passed around at
the last meeting and met the approval of all in attendance. I, for
one, have had changes take place,
and it will be a pleasure to own the
book. For all paid up members, one
copy is free, and additional copies
are available for a $5.00 donation.
The Provost website is now up
and running per Marvin Cass. Lots
of news, so check it out.
The next Swap Meet will take
place September 17th, 18th, and
19th.
The location is the same, and it
goes without saying that your help
will be greatly appreciated. Step up
to the plate.
Ed Hasenyager has been a Provost member for over 50 years and
was our President in 1966. He was
awarded a Full Lifetime Membership at our last meeting.
There is only one defibrillator available for emergencies, and
when the Provost is at parades, it
goes with them. There will soon be
another, so that one is always onsite.
As I write this, Bal Rast is
back to work. Bob Wrede is going
through a trying time, and Harvey
Mansfield has missed several meetings. All of you are in our prayers.

ongview Lake never looked nicer in August. What a beautiful day we
had for the Annual Greeter Sunrise Breakfast! President Jerry, Director
Chuck, all the cooks, the beverage crew, and all the helpers combined
their talents to put on a super breakfast feast for more than one hundred
Greeters, Greeterettes, Divan Members, and visitors from Abdallah Shrine.
A very good time was had by all!
Don’t forget the Temple Meeting is September 8th (parade uniform that
night). The Swap Meet is September 17th – 19th, the American Royal Parade
is on September 25th, and the big Greeter Golf outing to Oklahoma is September 27th and 28th. BUSY GREETERS ALL!!

Oriental Band
By Dave Wilbanks, Scribe
Well here we are in the month of September, and everybody has
been working hard to get ready for CSSA. CONGRATS to those who
won, and even if you didn’t win you still got to see some old friends and
maybe even made some new ones as well.
Not much happened last month. The O.B. didn’t have a dinner, but
plans were made to have one this month, so check your monthly mailer
for more information on where and when, and put it on your things to
do list.
Everybody knows what big event comes up in November, that’s
right it is CIRCUS time. To all of the nobles who are out there in the
heat, that’s right I said IN THE HEAT, with their fezzes on, because we
all know that a fez gets pretty hot just wearing it at all of the parades, and
even sometimes at a Temple Meeting, “WAY TO GO, HAT’S OFF TO
YOU ON A JOB WELL DONE, CONGRATS, TWO THUMBS UP. Or
to put it in plain words, “THANK YOU” for sweating it out.
I should have more on CSSA next month. Till then Be Safe.

A
great big musical hello to all of you from the best darn Big Band Sound
in all of Shrinedom; yes, I’m talking about the Ararats, our very own
big stage band led by our Ill. 33rd Director Noble William Benson
Dean, Sr. Noble “Bill” as all of his friends know him by, is a dedicated Director who rides herd over some 20 individuals who make up the Ararats.
Our Ararats can always be found performing in the American Legion
Building on the 4th Sunday of each month in beautiful Blue Springs, MO.
We are located on 7 Hwy, about one quarter mile north of 40 Hwy and 7 Hwy
intersections. We are on the west side of 7 Hwy located in a two story red
brick building. You can’t miss it.
Come join us for one of our “Tea Dances” on September 26th and October 24th from 2:00 pm until 4:30 pm. Now that you are fully informed as to
when and where the Ararats will be playing, you have no excuse not to come
and be with us for an exciting Sunday afternoon of listening and dancing pleasure. It’s your fault if you can’t get off the couch and come be with us, you’ll
be glad you did.
Now I want you to pay attention to the foregoing commercial. The entrance fee is only $5.00 with all the popcorn you can eat. Plus, the Legion
runs a cash bar to keep you from getting thirsty. It’s the best deal in town, so
come on out, what are you waiting for? We look forward to seeing you. Sure
would be nice to see some Divan representation as well.
I think I’ve said enough for now. If you haven’t got the picture yet, I’ll try
to do better next time. All the Ararats know where or when, so now you do
tooooo.

Pipes and Drums
By John Hall
G
reetings to the Ladies and Nobles of Ararat Pipes and Drums. At our
August meeting all officers were in attendance, along with Band Director Gary Mosby and two guests from the Drum and Bugle Corps.
President Ian Evans welcomed the guests from the Drum and Bugle Corps
to our meeting. Bob Z. gave a report on the Circus script sales and set dates
for upcoming bar runs. So far the Pipes and Drums have met about half of
their obligation and that is a good thing. We rank 7th out of the top 10 in
Circus sales so we have plenty of room for improvement. Brian Thompson,
our Pipe Sgt., gave his thoughts on how we might increase membership in the
Unit and Band. He explained that Ararat Pipes and Drums may not be able to
outplay some of the area pipe bands but we could always out dress them. He
made the suggestion that our formal attire for special events and competition
should be the full dress uniform. He suggested that the unit help with the cost
of the uniform as they have done with drums. A show of hands agreed.
The Drum and Bugle Corps suggested that the Pipes and Drums join
them on their float during parades. This would help both units be better represented. The Pipes and Drums Board of Governors will discuss the suggestion and notify the Director of the Drum and Bugle Corps of their decision.
Upcoming events: Unit party on September 17; performance at the Traveling Vietnam Wall in Blue Springs on September 30 through October 3.
As always, if you need the band or a piper for special events, contact Band
Director, Gary Mosby at Ararat Shrine. If you have any news for the magazine, contact John Hall at [email protected].
One last comment, Richard Hickman – a military veteran – stood up and
thanked Gary Mosby and members of the band for playing at military funerals. He stated that the only song other than ‘Taps’ on the bugle that makes
the hair on your neck stand up is ‘Amazing Grace’ played on the bagpipes.
Thanks, Uncle Dick, for your comments and thanks to all veterans of Ararat
Shrine for your service to your country.

W
e hope everyone had a great summer. After being off for two
months, Ararat Needle Guild will meet in Bennett Auditorium on
Tuesday, September 14th from 10:00 am - 2:00 pm. We would like
to see lots of you Ladies on that date, and every 2nd and 4th Tuesday after
that. We need all the help we can get to make as many items as possible to
send to the hospitals for the children. We sew, visit, have lunch and make new
friends at each meeting.
There are many things you can do, if you can’t sew. You can cut hose for
Raggedy Ann and Andy Dolls, stuff Raggedy Ann and Andy, make embroidered quilt blocks, cut out fabric to be sewn, etc. We look forward to seeing
“YOU” this year at Needle Guild.
For more information please contact our President, Elaine Graham, at
816-524-0933.
On a closing note, we would like to thank the Liberty Shrine Club for
their donation in memory of Pat Shackelford. It was greatly appreciated.

He used a 4 iron on the 160 yard uphill shot which put his team into first place
and the big bucks in the four man scramble competition. Others on his team
were Dewey Corbett, Roy DeHaven and Herb Gronemeyer.
Larry is our Club’s #2 Driver and he was in charge of the Boonville trip on
August 15-16. There were 23 golfers and 10 Ladies in the group, staying first
class at the Isle of Capri Casino Hotel. The weather was cooler for the two
days and a great time was had by all. It was also a treat to have Noble Eddie
Fisher of Boonville join us for the event again this year.
Our #1 Driver, Rocky Weaver, was unable to make this trip and gives
Larry a lot of praise for his leadership. “For golf shots or golf outings, we can
leave the job to Jobe!”
The Potentate’s Golf Tournament on Monday, September 13, has top
priority for all Ararat golfers and Sandblasters in particular. Why? Because it supports our Ararat General Fund and it needs
our help now more than ever in the history
of the event. Sandblasters were the driving force that started this fundraiser and
we have always led the way to make it successful year after year. Add up all the fun,
fellowship, eats, treats, prizes and surprises and you can’t find a better day of golf.
What a blast! Don’t delay… see page 19 for

The biggest golf trip blast of the year
is BRANSON! Three fun packed days of

A letter has been sent to all Sandblasters, explaining details on the trip, but
at this news deadline, we stay in the Holiday Hills Luxury Condos and play
their course at noon on Sunday. We play Point Royale at 8:00 am on Monday,
and Thousand Hills at 8:00 am on Tuesday. Total cost for lodging and golf fees
are: One golfer, single in room, for $262. Two golfers, double occupancy in
room, is $192 each. Two golfers, Noble and Lady golfer, is $384. One golfer
and Lady non golfer is $267.
Herb Gronemeyer will man the Hospitality Room in Unit 04 on the West
