Penn, Chamber President/CEO Over the years as I drafted my letters for the magazine or the weekly e-brief I seldom needed to spend a lot of time finding a subject. There is so much happening in the Chamber world and our community that I have always been able to glom onto a timely issue or topic to bloviate about. I’m having a little trouble with this one. You see, this will be the last magazine letter I will write as your President/CEO. Please indulge me as I reminisce a bit and share some of my experiences about my tenure here. In the late ‘60’s I was encouraged by my employer Rieth-Riley Construction Co. to become active as a volunteer in the Chamber. Keith Meade was President then and welcomed me to the Chamber family. After stints with the Beautification Committee, Government Committee and Contact Club (that one was a hoot)! I joined the Transportation Committee. I quickly learned the value of the Chamber to the Company through the contacts and relationships developed, and the impact that our committee had on infrastructure issues. In the late 70’s I was transferred to Indianapolis and after 10 years we came back to Elkhart. Then-Chamber President Bob Kelso took me to lunch and asked if I would be interested in chairing the Transportation Council (Bob had reorganized the “committees/task forces” into Councils that met regularly each month – the model we are still using today). I agreed and it was just like putting on a pair of comfortable old shoes. Long-time Transportation volunteers Marly Rydson and Harold “Doc” Atkins among others were still active on the Council and we had many challenging issues to tackle. In the mid-90’s I got a call from “Doc” representing the Nominating Committee asking if I would be a candidate for the Chamber’s Board, which I accepted. Council member Kent Schumacher volunteered to chair the Council and remains in that position to this day. Then in July 1999 after 33 years with Rieth-Riley I decided to take early retirement. Six months later the Chamber President left and I agreed to be “interim” President. Just for a couple of months, you understand. Well, those two months turned into thirteen years. I decided this Spring that it’s time to hang it up at years-end. Serving as your President/CEO has been an honor and a privilege. I have enjoyed each and every day I have been here and I will always cherish the acquaintances and friendships I have developed over these many years of affiliation with this wonderful Chamber. Since its founding over 90 years ago, our Chamber has been the Voice of Business in Elkhart and has been instrumental in shaping our community’s rich heritage and legacy. We are accredited by the U.S. Chamber and are regarded as one of the top Chambers in the State by our fellow Chambers. Without you none of this would have been possible. The Pokagon Indians have a saying about their land: “The Pokagon have always lived here. And will always live here.” Our Chamber has always been here for our Members, for Business and for the Community. And will always be here. 4 Greater Elkhart CHAMBER NEW MEMBERS... As the world has experienced unprecedented change and adversity, the things we considered absolutes don’t seem so absolute anymore. And so, the question keeps popping up, “What are you seeing out there?” It’s a relevant question as we try to understand where the economy is headed. It’s also a complex question, with many facets, influenced by local, regional, national and international factors. Did you ever imagine that you’d actually worry about Greece’s national debt and how that might impact you and your business? “Cliff” used to be that know-it-all mailman on Cheers, not something fiscal that might spell disaster for the economy. Indeed, these are unprecedented and complex times. management and attentive ownership find innovative ways to do more with less, to be resourceful and to change their business model. Quality management can be the difference. The bank needs to know your key people and believe in them. Good banks aren’t afraid of acceptable risk with quality management. Finally, banks are in business to make loans and they want to be a resource to help you succeed. So ask questions, and let them ask you questions, too. The bank’s tough questions can make your business stronger; they may point out risks that have gone unnoticed or areas that need attention. The bank is on your side and wants you to be successful. It all starts with great communication, telling the story of your company and your people, and then partnering with your bank to find the best solution. And by the way, what we are “seeing out there” is that many businesses have indeed concluded the time is right, and are experiencing great success in taking their business to the next level. So we go into our businesses every day, trying to plan for tomorrow and wondering which tea leaves to read. Is this the right time to expand, or should we hold off? If your business expansion requires traditional bank financing, then you need to consider the following issues as you make your decision. A bank will look at your balance sheet to understand where it has been and where it is today. Your ability to withstand the ups and downs of business cycles is always reflected in your balance sheet. The downturn of the last four years, and the resulting pressure on profitability, has taken a toll on corporate balance sheets. If your business has successfully survived the challenges, and the tide has turned, congratulations! But, has the recovery been long enough, or impactful enough, to refill your capital gas tank? Does your company have the liquidity and resources to survive if expansion turns out to be a less-than-ideal decision? A bank also wants to look beyond your numbers, to the people behind them. Your track record over the last four years will help tell this part of the story. Classes have begun for 2012-13 Elkhart Leadership Academy 2012-2013 As they venture off to their overnight Retreat at Camp Crosley… Community Connections Day – Participants volunteered at Church Community Services with filling soup packages for gift baskets. YEA! has gotten off to a great start with 19 students from Elkhart, Concord and Jimtown Schools. We have three Instructors again this year, including Stephanie Patka, Big Brothers Big Sisters; Amish Shah, Kem Krest; and Cien Asoera, Edward Jones. The students have already gone on a field trip to ETHOS in Elkhart. Their next will be to Texas Roadhouse to learn about a food franchise business. They are busily brainstorming their business ideas and learning the difference between an idea and an opportunity. Once they have done their research and begun the business plan process they will know if they have an idea or an opportunity. Because the class will be limited to a total of 12 businesses, some will be collaborating. Exciting times are ahead for these young entrepreneurs, living right here in our own Elkhart Community. A big thank you to all YEA! Premier Member Sponsors – without them this program would not be possible! We will have more about these Young Entrepreneurs in future issues.
