ELKHART.ORG | LEADING BUSINESS 3 Making memories for tomorrow Today, a lot of people are talking about our strong economy and how far we have come since the Great Recession. I think about our Chamber and how we helped pull the community together. As the person who handled media calls to the Chamber, I talked to reporters from all over the world about our community and what we thought about President Obama’s visit. I always spoke about our strong community and how we were down, but not despondent. What is your favorite Chamber memory over the past 90 years? That’s not really a fair question. Even if some of us were around 90 years ago, we probably weren’t active with the Chamber yet. In this issue of Leading Business, we highlight parts of our history, which is your history, too. We have been involved in many things that have molded the community you live in today. My own history with the Chamber goes back about 14 years. Part of that time I was responsible for public policy, government relations, and media relations. I have a lot of memories and a lot of sources of pride. The Greater Elkhart Chamber was a founder of the US 31 Coalition which continues to push for a true freeway between South Bend/Elkhart and Indianapolis. I have been personally involved in the advocacy that helped bring the improvements we see today. Because of that professional and personal commitment I felt obligated to run 13.1 miles along the new Kokomo bypass before it opened. It was a one-time footrace created to celebrate the road before it opened. It was fun, but I probably won’t try to run that far again. The St. Joseph County to Marshall County portion was open to a bike ride before it was opened to traffic. I participated in that, too, for the same reason. Now I drive those stretches, which is easier that running or biking. And I think, where would this great road be if the Greater Elkhart Chamber had not pushed? As I stop at the remaining 7 stoplights I think, what happens to these lights if we don’t keep pushing today? 4 GREATER ELKHART CHAMBER Working with the Economic Development Council, we created a list of reasons people like our community. We called it the Favorite Five and shared it with every community group we could find to keep telling our story and reminding people why we were going to get out of the recession. I look at our legislative victories, road projects, community improvement initiatives, the Lerner Theatre and all the other improvements we have touched, or led. We’ve been pretty busy the last 90 years. But we are not even close to being done yet. US 31 is not complete. The Vibrant Communities Initiative is just getting started. Regional Cities funding is bringing opportunities. We still have government organizations to work with. We have epic events to maintain and grow. Over the next few months look for news about a building renovation at our Chamber facilities. Look for news about how we are leading downtown business development. Look for news about a new business incubator in our building. Look for news about workforce development efforts. And look for news about a new name and emphasis of our business-improvement offerings. Enjoy this issue of Leading Business. Learn more about our strong, effective Chamber of Commerce. Appreciate our history, but know that we are not intending to be a museum of ourselves. The point is that at 90 years, we are just getting warmed up. Problem solved. Even then, the goal of the Chamber was to promote an environment where business would thrive. The first Board Chairs included CD Greenleaf (left), Dr. JC Fleming, GC Berkey, Harry Lerner, and FE Berton. Chase, Frontier Communications, KeyBank, JJ Babbitt, Martin’s Pet & Garden, Matzke Florists, Northern Indiana Public Service Co., Shaum Electric and Shreiner & Sons have all been members for more than 70 years. The names may have changed over the years for some, but their dedication to our Chamber and our community has not wavered. Education Through the Elkhart County Chambers Education Foundation, the Chamber diligently pursued bringing institutions of higher education to Elkhart County. The Chamber testified in front of the Indiana Legislature regarding the importance of funding for ESL (English as Second Language). In the past 28 years, over 600 men and women have graduated from the Elkhart Leadership Academy and completed service projects for the community. In 2013, we became the first Chamber in Indiana to sponsor the Young Entrepreneurs Academy (YEA!), a groundbreaking program that transforms middle and high school students into entrepreneurs. Transportation Recognizing the importance of a good transportation system for attracting business, in the 1940’s the Chamber campaigned to raise funds for the airport, and later for hard surfacing of the runways. The Chamber has continued to promote transportation projects, including: • Building CR 17 from Michigan State Line to US 6 • US 33 widening between Goshen and Elkhart • Building the US 20 Bypass • Improvements to the US 20 Bypass and SR 15 intersection • Four-laning CR 6 • SR 19 four-laned from Beardsley Ave to US 20 Bypass • Railroad underpasses at Benham (right 1954), Nappanee St. and Indiana Ave. and an overpass at Prairie St. • Airport Control Tower replacement • US 31 Improvements (Founding member of the US 31 Coalition) 8 GREATER ELKHART CHAMBER for 90 years Advocating for our Members The Chamber advocates for our members with local, state and federal government. We continually monitor legislation to stop bills that would be detrimental to businesses. During the state legislative session, we host Third House meetings to allow our members to meet the legislators and discuss topics of concern. Throughout the years, we have coordinated trips to the Indiana Statehouse and Washington DC to meet with legislators. OSHA and Environmental The OSHA Council was created in 1979 to promote safety in the workplace for local companies. Hundreds of companies have attended OSHA training through the Chamber. In 2002, the Chamber’s OSHA Council received the Governor’s Award for Safety. Through the Environmental Council, the Chamber provides training on environmental regulations and promotes compliance and best practices for pollution prevention and sustainability. We have developed relationships with the EPA and IDEM, and provide input on local, state and federal legislation and regulations. Economic Development In the early 1960’s, the Chamber established the East Side Industrial Park and also worked with the Indiana Toll Road on a project to attract more industry into the community. We were involved in attracting anchor stores to both Concord Mall and the former Pierre Moran Mall. Our Economic Development Council worked with Elkhart County Government to create a “one-stop-shop” to make the permit process easier for businesses. In 1989, the Chamber moved from 514 South Main Street to our current location at 418 South Main Street. The Chamber has continued to work to keep downtown healthy and viable, including supporting the development of the Lerner Theatre. The new Director of Downtown Development office will be at the Chamber in the new Center for Business Excellence. and we’re just getting started! It was a success in terms of their goals: to bring the community together for a united time of fellowship, prayer and to hear a strong message of faith from someone who’s risen to success but also has a testimony to share about how faith helped to overcome struggles and obstacles. The Christian Business Men’s Connection has been active in Elkhart since 1974. Charlie Miller was its first chair. He’s also one of the founders of the Community Leaders’ Prayer Breakfast. According to Mr. Miller, it was evident that a Community Leaders’ Prayer Breakfast would be welcomed by area business, professional, and community leaders. United States Senator Bill Armstrong was the first speaker at the inaugural event in 1991. Since then the CLPB has been able to bring well known speakers like Dan Quayle, Mike Singletary, Tony Dungy, Darrell Waltrip, Bobby Bowden and Tim Brown. Other powerful speakers but perhaps not as well known include astronaut Robert Stewert, swimmer Josh Davis, the military man who was responsible for the hunt and capture Saddam Hussein—Steve Russell, and Mark Whitacre who had a movie made about his life’s story called The Informant. “The support was overwhelming from the very beginning, which evidenced the moral and ethical interest of our leaders for this community,” says Charlie. The speaker for this year’s Annual Community Leaders’ Prayer Breakfast is Jeff Saturday. You may recognize the name from his professional football career as an All Pro and Pro-Bowler who played with the Indianapolis Colts and the Green Bay Packers. After retiring from football, Jeff joined ESPN as an NFL analyst. The Community Leaders’ Prayer Breakfast has traditionally drawn an attendance of between 700 to 1,000 on average over the years. The event will include a breakfast catered by Nelson’s as well as a chance to hear Jeff Saturday’s testimony and message about his life in the NFL. You’ll also get to hear more about CBMC, the group that sponsors and arranges this annual event. CBMC is active in the community all year long. Some of their programs include monthly men’s forums meetings, bible studies, one on one mentoring, leadership training and lunch gatherings. The goal is to help men walk out a Christian faith in their lives at work and home while connecting and staying connected with other men who help each other become better men. “Many businessmen have come to Christ because of CBMC,” says Kent Yoder, a long-time member and active participant with the organization. “We have seen more businesses, professions and marriages prosper and thrive through biblical principles by CBMC programs.” The 25th Annual Community Leaders Prayer Breakfast will take place on July 20, 2016, at the Memorial High School gym from 7:15 to 9 AM.
