NEWSPAPER 2ND CLASS THE VOICE OF THE INDUSTRY FOR 71 YEARS $2.99 VOLUME 72, NUMBER 26 JUNE 17–23, 2016 Brigade LA Moving to LA Live in DTLA By Alison A. Nieder Executive Editor Brigade LA is moving to a new space across from LA Live in downtown Los Angeles. The new Brigade store will be located in a 6,000-squarefoot space at 901 W. Olympic Blvd. on the ground floor of the Courtyard Marriott and Residence Inn. The space will dedicate 3,000 square feet to Brigade LA retail, which includes women’s fashions by brands such as Leota, Marc Jacobs and Canada Goose; menswear by Vince and Diesel; and accessories by Kate Spade, Michael Kors, Furla, Chan Luu and Byboe. There are plans to expand the menswear offerings as well as gift items in the new space. The remaining square footage will house One One 77 Creative Studio, the graphic design and visual communications company run by Brigade owner Kuo Yang. The store’s new location is directly across from LA ➥ Brigade page 2 TRADE SHOW REPORT OC Mix: New Orange County Trade Show Hopes to Expand By Deborah Belgum Senior Editor TIM REGAS Pop Art Moschino designer Jeremy Scott offered a psychedelic take on the Spring/Resort 2016 men’s and women’s collections, which bowed on the runway at Made LA, the newly launched event by Made Fashion Week and WME | IMG, held at LA Live in downtown Los Angeles. For more from the event, see page 7. 01-3.cover.indd 1 Usually Southern California retailers in Orange County and San Diego drive long distances to check out the new styles at the various showrooms located in the Los Angeles Fashion District in downtown Los Angeles. But for a change, Los Angeles showrooms were hitting the highway to drive down to Orange County to show their latest collections to retailers. Several showrooms and sales reps recently participated in the second edition of OC Mix, a small and casual trade show that feels more like an afternoon get-together of friends than a buy-and-sell event. The show is organized by Z Supply, an apparel company with several labels that range from Black Swan and Oth- ➥ OC Mix page 3 INSIDE: Where fashion gets down to business SM 6 10 Barbara Fields reopens ... p. 2 CurvExpo moving in Las Vegas ... p. 2 New exec at NYDJ ... p. 2 MRket, Project joining forces in N.Y. ... p. 4 Findings & Trimmings Spotlight ... p. 8 Resource Guide ... p. 13 www.apparelnews.net 6/16/16 5:00 PM NEWS CurveNV Moving to Mandalay Bay, Colocating With Project Womens CurvExpo, the lingerie and swimwear trade show, is on the move in Las Vegas. In August, CurveNV will move to the Mandalay Bay Convention Center, where it will co-locate with UBM’s Project Womens trade show during the shows’ Aug. 15–17 runs. Previously located at the Las Vegas Convention Center, CurveNV will now show alongside the contemporary ready-to-wear brands at Project Womens. The new location at Mandalay Bay will create a one-stop shopping venue for retailers looking to add swim and lingerie to their contemporary merchandise mix, CurveNV organizers said. For CurveNV’s exhibitors, the new location will allow them to discover new retailers and new trends and develop crossover product categories. “This is excellent news for our exhibitors and visitors, who will be immersed in one of the best— if not the best—of the trade shows happening during Las Vegas’ fashion week, showcasing only the best contemporary brands and creating incredible business opportunities,” said Pierre-Nicolas Hurstel, chief executive officer of CurvExpo’s parent company, Eurovet Americas. “This was the logical evolution in our collaboration with UBM and MAGIC, and I am thrilled that we made it happen.” French trade-show producer Eurovet is the parent company of CurvExpo, which produces the CurveNV show in Las Vegas and the CurveNY show in New York. In 2015, Eurovet struck a joint-venture deal with MAGIC and Project producer UBM (then called Advanstar) to move CurveNV from its original home at The Venetian to a separate space at the Las Vegas Convention Center next to WWDMAGIC. In February, CurveNV moved to a new space within the WWDMAGIC show floor, where exhibitors included lingerie brands Felina from California, Leonisa from Colombia and Tri- umph from Germany as well as swimwear companies such as Miami-based InGear Fashions Inc. Exhibitors praised the seamless flow of traffic between CurveNV and WWDMAGIC, but CurveNV’s placement next to childrenswear exhibitors and accessories vendors was less than ideal. “This is really the best possible location CurveNV could dream of in Vegas,” said Chris DeMoulin, managing director of fashion for UBM. “We are very happy to go a step further into bringing the lingerie and swimwear categories together and keep developing business synergies between our shows.” —Alison A. Nieder New CEO Appointed at NYDJ Apparel Los Angeles blue-jeans company NYDJ Apparel, formerly known as Not Your Daughter’s Jeans, has appointed Lisa Collier to take over the top job at the company. Collier succeeds Robert Skinner, the former CEO, president and chairman at Kellwood Co., who two years ago was named NYDJ’s president and CEO. Skinner’s appointment came as Crestview Partners in New York and Maybrook Capital Partners in Los Angeles completed their $385 million acquisition of the apparel company from Falconhead Capital and the RudesSandel family. In 2013, NYDJ had annual revenues of approximately $200 million a year. Collier has a long history of working in the apparel industry. She most recently served as president of global at Dockers and chief transformation officer at Levi Strauss & Co., where she led the San Francisco– based company’s operational and strategic transformation across all brands, regions and channels. She also managed Dockers’ strategic vision as a member of the company’s executive leadership team. Prior to Levi’s, she worked for Los Angeles–based Tarrant Apparel, where she was vice president of product development, planning and sourcing. Before Tarrant Apparel, she spent more than a decade in buying and merchandising at The Limited. She began her career in fashion and retail as a trainee at Hess’s Department Stores after graduating from the Art Institute of Pittsburgh. “Lisa has a rich knowledge of denim and retail as well as a track record of successfully transforming organizations for growth,” said Mackey McDonald, chairman of the NYDJ board of directors and senior adviser to the hangers you were looking for... Crestview Partners, NYDJ’s majority owner. “Moreover, Lisa has a unique blend of operational expertise coupled with strategic vision and palpable creative energy. We feel confident that her leadership and passion for building brands will help take NYDJ to new heights.” NYDJ was founded in 2003 by Lisa Rudes-Sandel and her father, George Rudes. Lisa got the idea for NYDJ after shopping Barbara Fields Reopening Buying Office In late May, retail forecaster Barbara Fields unexpectedly announced her retirement after 35 years in business with an email sent to clients, friends and colleagues. The news came as a surprise, and Fields was flooded with phone calls and emails. “All the clients were calling and saying, ‘No, Barbara, you can’t do this,’” Fields said. “They did not want me to leave.” Fields shuttered her 12th-floor office in the California Market Center on June 1, and on June 14 she announced she is reopening the Barbara Fields Buying Office. She will also reopen her London office and resume her trend-scouting trips to New York and Europe. She plans to continue to host her biannual trend-forecasting seminars— known for Fields’ prediction of must-haves or “Million Dollar Items”—held during the Los Angeles Majors Market. The trend forecaster has a few other changes in mind. Instead of creating a hardcopy trend book for her clients, she will distribute the information digitally. The office phone number, (213) 6276474, and website (www.barbarafieldsnyla. com) remain the same. “I’ve never realized how appreciated I’ve been with my clients,” Fields said. “As a conclusion I decided I’m going to move back with the clients I worked with before. They didn’t want me to leave. So here I am again. It was a short retirement.” —A.A.N. Brigade Continued from page 1 new lines not available in the Seventh Street store. A moving sale is already underway at the Seventh Street location. ● Live’s east parking entrance and the JW Marriott and Ritz Carlton hotels. This marks the first fashion retailer to open near LA Live. The Brigade store will have two entrances, one facing Olympic Boulevard and one in the hotel lobby. Brigade first opened in 2009 as a pop-up shop at 1010 Wilshire Blvd. In 2011, the retailer moved to a 2,100-square-foot space on West Seventh Street down from the popular Bottega Louie restaurant. “While we are committed to carrying designer, ready-to-wear goods, we recognize we need to tailor our merchandise to appeal to both the DTLA residents and the tourist/ event/convention guests LA Live serves,” Yang said. “Our current customers will have everything they are accustomed to as well as jerianhangers.com for a pair of stylish jeans in a high-end department store and not finding anything to fit her over-35-year-old figure. To keep costs down, the show is housed in Z Supply’s 1,500-square-foot showroom in its industrial-park headquarters in Irvine, Calif., where the space has floor-to-ceiling windows that overlook a long patio furnished with picnic tables. The first show took place April 18–19. The second show was held June 13–14, and a third show is being considered for September. “I decided that Orange County needed some kind of contemporary show down here that would make it easier for retailers and for reps who can knock out 20 to 30 accounts in a couple of days,” said Greg Garrett, a Z Supply cofounder. “For the retailers, going to Los Angeles, with the traffic and cost, adds up.” With only 1,500 square feet at the venue, vendor space was limited. At the recent Knot Sisters, the show helped whittle down her daily commute. She lives only 10 minutes away in Huntington Beach, Calif. “My boss said there were a few accounts we didn’t see during Los Angeles Fashion Market because it was hard for the retailers to drive up to Los Angeles,” she said. “For a lot of specialty-store accounts, it is hard for them to drive up to Los Angeles.” This was the second show for Level 99, a hip twill-and-denim-based brand started by textile manufacturer Twin Dragon Marketing in Gardena, Calif. Sandy Ramirez, the West Coast sales rep who works out of a showroom in The New Mart, said she was trying to branch out and find new customers. On the first day, she picked up two new accounts—with West of Camden, which has stores in Corona del Mar, Calif., and Huntington Beach, and with Costa Cabana in Costa Mesa, Calif. 213.749.9970 Southern California buyers at the OC Mix show Sandy Ramirez, sales rep for Level 99 Justine Inman and Chelsea Davis of Free People “We are trying to open the doors and get show, there were only nine vendors with 22 lines, about the same as in April, Garrett more presence in Orange County and San Diego,” Ramirez said. “It’s hard to see evsaid. “We have a waiting list of 10 people who eryone when you’re on the road.” Caroline Strother, the Los Angeles–based want to come,” he said, noting he may tent the patio area to expand. This was the first show for Justine Inman, the West Coast account executive for Free People, which has a showroom in the Lady Liberty building in downtown Los Angeles. “This was a great way to reach out to more accounts and secure new business. The UA Shop integrates data from Under Armour’s digital fitness community, allowing users to personalize their visit to the UA Shop based on athletic inspiration, workout history and previous purchases. Connect Fitness has gathered health and fitness information from more than 170 million members worldwide. “This app was created to maximize our digital platform and complement our existing in-store experiences by bringing consumers a way to find the product they want, when they want it,” said Jason LaRose, Under Armour senior vice president of revenue, in a company statement. “We are now able to provide custom experiences across our various categories specific to our diverse customer base.” UA Shop users will find Under Ar- mour’s performance apparel, footwear and equipment as well as purchase recommendations tailored to the user. For example, the company said, for a user in a warm climate who has used Connect Fitness’ MapMyRun, the app will suggest apparel and footwear with UA CoolSwitch climate-control technology. Conversely, a user in a cool climate will see Under Armour base-layer and outerwear products. The UA Shop will allow Connected Fitness users to create a single profile, which will be synced to their UA Shop account. The app also allows one-touch purchasing with Apple Pay, features expanded product content and customer reviews, and allows customers to scan apparel tags for “enhanced in-store experiences.” Based in Baltimore, Under Armor recently tapped designer Tim Coppens as the executive creative director of UAS, a new fashion-driven performance sportswear brand under the Under Armour umbrella.
