DS 320A Detroit Seminar: Detroit and the Contemporary Urban Crisis (3.7 CEUs)
T. Klug, F. Rashid
In this course, we apply ideas from economics and literature to the study of contemporary issues in Detroit. We pay
particular attention to several key factors influencing the city’s present condition. These include: race and inequality,
federal urban policy, corporate de-industrialization, economic globalization, and local and regional development.
Seminar sessions consist of discussion involving all members of the class and presentations by individual faculty and
students. In our discussions, we will respond to assigned readings based upon our own experiences of life in and
around Detroit. Presentations will focus on specific topics which are the products of our research. The course will
include guest presentations, films, and a tour of specific sites which are important to our discussions.

Kids’COLLEGE
Marygrove Cares About Education
Marygrove cares about children. Marygrove cares about your children’s education, from the very young through the
teen years! That’s why there is Kids’ College.
Generations of Metro Detroit children have taken classes through Marygrove’s Kids’ College. Its successful track
record of developing stronger academic performance, building character and instilling self-esteem is why Kids’
College is right for your child. Kids’ College helps build the whole person and helps your children become the
leaders they’re destined to be.
Shaping a Successful Future!
As a concerned and responsible parent, you want to make sure your child gets ahead in life and you also
want to provide the tools your child needs to become an effective reader, communicator, problem solver
and critical thinker.
Marygrove’s Kids’ College is your partner
in shaping a successful future for your child.
Kids’ College can help your child overcome classroom challenges.
If your child is performing one grade-level below his or her age-based grade level, our courses in literacy
and math teach strategies in a small group setting (8-12 students) to help your children develop and apply
skills needed to become better readers, writers, critical thinkers and problem solvers.
College Readiness courses can bridge the gap from high school to college.
Study and Test Taking Skills, Algebra and ACT Preparation courses are designed to help students be successful
in high school and better prepare them to enter college.
Room locations for all classes will be posted at the Enrollment Center the day class starts.
