RESIDENCE LIFE
Mrs. Terri Benton-Ollie and Ms. Barbara Collins
Residence Life Director and Office Manager
Florent Gillet Residence Hall
Marygrove College is going through a growth period and the campus is
evolving to meet the needs of the influx of students. One viable amenity
of the campus is that of the Florent Gillet Residence Hall. Florent Gillet
is a three-story building situated in the front west corner of the campus
which offers students a semi-private setting while still being on campus.
Each room is 434”x180” with a full bathroom, dual vanity, and shower.
Each room is also equipped with telephone and internet connections.
Students may bring a wireless network adaptor so as to enhance there
mobility while ‘surfing the web’. The community room is located on the
first floor adjacent to the lobby where students watch cable television,
play pool or air-hockey, converse with fellow dorm-mates, as well as
study. Florent Gillet is fully secured with closed-captioned video surveillance and two entry doors that can only be opened with the student
identification cards. In keeping with one of the original founders of
Marygrove, Louis Florent Gillet, the staff and residents are indeed the
spark and fire of the campus. Throughout the week, the energetic Residence Advisors host many activities to keep the students at a balanced
level socially. We all know what all work and no play can lead to. The
staff is dedicated to creating a stress free environment for the residents.
The student identification card not only is a security measure, but it is
also a means of purchasing meals in the cafeteria based on the meal
plan that the student chooses at registration. Be certain to watch your
spending because it is harsh when the balance dries up within a few
weeks of the end of the semester, even though all student accounts can
be reloaded at the leisure of the student. While Florent Gillet is a coeducational residence hall, suites are only available for students of the
same sex.

THE POWER OF MARYGROVE
Dr. Brenda Bryant
By Michael Brandimarte
For those of you who don’t know Dr. Brenda Bryant, or skipped her speech at the academic symposium, you are missing out. I recently had the chance to meet up with the
Assistant Dean of Professional Studies in her office at MC309.
A member of the college faculty for eleven years, Dr. Bryant believes Marygrove is a
“lifeline” to its surrounding community, as all good schools are. By talking to her, I
learned more about Marygrove College which added to what I learned in my IS-100
class. Marygrove was founded by the Immaculate Heart of Mary (IHM) Sisters and
Servants,” Bryant added, “They believed in the educating of women, social justice,
and bringing out the best in each individual that comes on campus.” “Further, the IHM
Dr. Brenda Bryant mother house in Monroe, Michigan is one of the most environmentally friendly places
around, contributing to their belief in ‘an ecological consciousness that fosters an interdependence of all nature, nurturing relationships that will enhance the well-being of the earth and all
persons.’”
The beliefs of the sisters in conjunction with the college’s mission synergistically are an asset to
campus life, making it a working microcosm of Dr. Martin Luther King’s “Beloved Community”. “Everyone
has a purpose, and we’re here to help people find out what theirs is,” said Dr. Bryant. “All of this goes
back to social justice,” explains Dr. Bryant. “We’re all looking for purpose, to live our life with meaning. A
meaningful job, worthwhile education, safety, food, and bolstered by the fact that we’re all connected to
each other.”
Dr. Bryant and I sat for a while and talked about many other things that fell into synchronicity
with what she said at the academic symposium. The bottom line is that Marygrove students and alumni
alike have some big foot steps to follow in. The society and education here is unconditional. You are
treated as an equal, regardless of background. We support everyone here; LGBT community, men and
women, mothers, people with cancer, HIV/AIDS, all religions, all races, all backgrounds, you’ll find it
somewhere on campus.
It lives in the classrooms, the cafeteria, the sporting events, the staff, online, and offline. The
legacy of Marygrove College is hard at work in each and every one of us.
Maybe Dr. King’s legacy is closer to being achieved than we originally thought.

Nick Cannon and Victoria’s Secret model Selita Ebanks have called off their engagement and split up, Ebanks’s rep confirms to PEOPLE exclusively.
Lil Wayne and Nivea back together!!! She was with him at his show in Newark, New Jersey. Nivea
states: “I come from a sad and scary past that I am still in the process of overcoming and growing past,
thanks to the man I love and always will. This is truly the only person I’ve ever known or heard of that is
incredibly loving, passionate, wise, psychic, creative, genius, and many more things that I could never
put into words. I don’t feel it is fair for neither of us, especially him, to continue this never-ending battle of
the minds that he and i have continued for long enough.” I really need for them to get back together because Nivea is another one hit wonder….I need for her to come out with something new….How about:
“25 reasons why I wanna get back with you”….I love it!!!…she better not take my song title either….Furthermore let me be the first to publicize that The Dream is extremely ugly and makes “The

REFLECTION
The Idea of Perfection
Robert Baskerville
Why do people chase such a goal?
Even though I did pose the question, I would like to answer it in my own way.
I believe most people reach for perfection because they believe only what their two eyes show them. It’s pretty
obvious but I do it sometimes too. But not to the point to where it changes who I am. Perfection is defined as the
quality or condition of being perfect. When can you tell that you’ve reached the condition of being perfect?
“Never” I say, if and only if you base yourself on the standards of other people or the images given through commercials.
How most women would probably never be seen as beautiful or that of perfection unless they had a certain bone
structure or was a size six. Then in cases to where a guy isn’t perfect unless he has the right clothes and a car or
unless he’s a thirty-year-old guy receiving social security benefits.
LMAO. The idea of perfection to me is based on the arrogance of people. People think that they are on a higher
level than most because of material possession. Please….Let that ignorance fly with the birds.
You are no higher than someone, in truth, than you are lower. I believe the idea of perfection should mean being
yourself. What I mean by being yourself I mean you should not be who you are based on by the standards of others but of yourself.
People should be allowed to have their own definition of perfect to where it personifies their idea of being perfect
for themselves to where it does not oppose upon anyone else. Also, to where it doesn’t need the approval of anyone but you.
Prayer in Needing Guidance
Robert Baskerville
Dear God
I come to you O’ Lord asking for forgiveness of my sins. For I apologize for my transgressions and disobedience
to your word. I apologize for my continual backsliding. I apologize for not having a sound mind. But dear Lord I
come to you giving thanks for your mercy and grace. For allowing me to live another day which was not promised
yesterday. Forgive me for leaning on my own understanding and not of yours. I come O’ Lord to ask for your
guidance, I ask that you instruct me and teach me in the way I should go. I ask that you guide with your eye O’
Lord for it is on the sparrow and I know that you watch over me. I ask O’ Lord that you help me to live by your
rules of living which is stated in Romans Chapter Twelve. In all these things I ask in your name [and that of my
saviour] Jesus [Christ].
AMEN

Volume 1 Issue 5 Mustang Matters
Aries-You'll be in a strongly experimental, adventurous mood this month, and rightly so. You're looking
forward to making lots of important changes in months ahead and you're eager to get started. Now
that two tough months have passed - the eclipses have delivered their messages in February or
March, and Mercury is moving direct - there's no more reason to hold back.
Taurus- You can expect April to be a solidly good month and a vast improvement over February and
March. Those were months that might have been emotionally draining for you, for February brought
shockwaves due to the advent of two eclipses, and at the time Mercury was retrograde. March brought
a wild and very active Uranus - planet of unexpected events - so it probably wasn't very relaxing, although admittedly, you were one of the signs that may have liked the many social surprises that were
in store.
Gemini- You seem to have been coping with an unusual career situation that arose in February or
March. The event came up suddenly and you either found it to be highly exciting or emotionally
wrenching - events seem to have fallen on either extreme end of the emotional spectrum. For sure,
with Uranus so active at that time, it was not likely to have been business as usual. Things were
shocking, unusual, or stimulating - but not dull.
Cancer-Finally - a month that's completely to your liking! With a crown of stars shimmering brightly at
the very pinnacle point of your chart, filling your 10th house of honors, awards, and achievement with
brilliant light, you have one of the best career months of the year to get that plum job or promotion. If
you are tired of your job or if you don't like the people, the location, or the pay, here's your chance to
break free!
Leo- You'll be eager to spread your wings and fly to distant points as the month opens. Actually, with
your career aspects due to show massive gains in early May, you'd be wise to pack up and go now,
while you can. You truly have the perfect set of circumstances to leave town and enjoy a little rest.
Virgo- No matter what you become involved with during the first three weeks of April, the real topic
underlying everything else will be money. Your eighth house will be a huge focal point, ruling "other
people's money." That's a big umbrella covering the money that comes in, usually in sporadic chunks
to you, outside of your regular salary.
Libra- The key to your progress this month will be through merging your energies with others. With so
many planets on the Western side of your chart, you won't be as productive operating on your own, so
link up with others and watch your success and happiness zoom. Mercury, the Sun, and new moon
will light your solar 7th house of partnerships on April 5 and set this trend in motion. Venus will quickly
join this trio of heavenly bodies on the next day, so you can count on having lovely interactions with
your new and intended partner.
Scorpio- April will be a highly productive month for you, and one in which you show just how decisive
and practical you can be when the chips are down. When other people are freaking out because so
much business is coming in the door with so little time to get it all done, you'll stay cool, calm, and collected as you set up workflow schedules and polish things off with high standards, all in apple pie or-

der. Of course, you are a Scorpio, and managing in a busy, pressured atmosphere is often what you do
best.
Sagittarius- April is the symbolic beginning of the zodiac. No matter where you live, Aries epitomizes the
very start of new life. How appropriate that in your solar chart, Aries rules the spark of new love, and
also of pregnancy and matters related to children. Also included in this house are all your most personal
and creative efforts, for indeed, when you work on those, you too are bringing forth new life of a different
kind.
Capricorn- As beautiful April opens, home is where your heart and soul will be based. You've got plenty
to be excited about, for it looks like home, property, and possibly even a major lifestyle change that
you've been anxious to make are actually ready to take root. Even if you've had a hard time making residential or family-related changes in the past, a new day is dawning, and you will be able to seize opportunities as they arrive. Keep your eye on the new moon that will appear April 5 and in the two weeks that
follow.
Aquarius- There is plenty of energy circulating in your horoscope this month and you seem restless and
eager to set off in new directions, whether metaphysically or literally. Expand the perimeters of your
world, open up to new thinking, and find a way to explore greater possibilities on all levels of life. It appears that you're on the verge of a major lifestyle change, one you've long hoped to institute, and as you
get closer to actually making the change, the excitement will build.
Pisces- You aren't a materialistic sign, for you are motivated by ideas, not dollars. Yet lately you've been
very focused on money, possibly because you have felt that you simply don't have enough to live on or
to give birth to a creative idea in a proper way. It looks like you're ready to gather up your courage and
speak up for what you feel you deserve. Indeed, once Pisces decide they need to make more money,
it's as if their angels gather all around them. The fish may be a gentle soul, without hoofs or horns, but
what Pisces is born with is better - razor-sharp instinct and a fierce ability for survival. This month these
qualities will help set you apart and will allow you succeed.

COMMUNITY EVENTS
Fundraiser with Bill Black and State Rep. Coleman A. Young II
By Crystal J. Williams
[email protected]
The fundraiser was held near the Wayne State Area;
Friday, April 04, 2008 at 5:30 P.M. to 8:30 P.M.
Location: CIRCA 1890 SALOON 5474 CASS AVE. Detroit, MI. 48202
This fundraiser for Sen. Obama for America was hosted by Isaac Robinson. Mr. Robinson hosted many
events, and stated in his opening remarks, “Who cares if Senator Clinton won Ohio, President Bush won
Ohio; twice!”
Moreover, many Influential attendees were present. One who many Marygrove Students admire and
know, our own Theater Director, Ms. Leslie Love. Ms. Leslie Love is running for State Representative
District 8 Detroit. If any one has questions or concerns you may contact Ms. Love at
www.loves4detroit.com. Once your questions and concerns are fulfilled, get out and show your Marygrove Spirit and spread the WORD!
On the other hand, many other influential attendees were present at the fundraiser for Sen.
Obama. The attendees were: State Circuit Judge David Allen & his lovely wife, Kenny, the Communication Director for Young Democrats, Jauron Winston, who is the Leader for Young Democrats. The two
most prominent speakers for the event were State Representative of the fourth District Coleman A.
Young II and Bill Black from the SCIU Teamster’s Union.
The first speaker, State Rep. Coleman A. Young II main message was, “Obama represents the
safety net for all Americans”. Mr. Young II also stressed the importance of the American Constitution in
conjunction with unity. Mr. Young II also stated that Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness is not
solely for individuals making 300,000+ dollars, but this motto is for every American Citizen. The second
speaker, Bill Black is a part of the political action organization, Change to Win, Farm Union, and many
others. Mr. Black’s main message was, “Barack Obama stands for change because he understands
what we went through; because he went through it! You know, the way I was brought up and the way
you were brought up is to help your fellow men”.
In addition, Mr. Black gave a very strong view on Sen. Clinton and the NAFTA incident; “Clinton
gave us the NAFTA and we got the SHAFTA!” In other words, the Clinton Administration gave us the
North American Free Trade Agreement, however, this agreement did not facilitate every American, and
as a result of this agreement many American Citizens were left out of the job market.

went into these projects wanting to make something for me when I was that 13 year old hiphopper but what’s come about is way more powerful. These albums give a message to me, my
city, and my people.
Look forward to lots more coming from the artist who rocked our campus first! He is blowing
up fast! Khary is a man of humility who does not forget those who supported him on the way.
As he goes into the mainstream, he promises to make it his business to return and give back to
all of his Detroit supporters. Marygrove College is on his list!

CAMPUS LIFE
Marygrove strongly believes in being a vibrant part of the community in which surrounds the campus
and even that of the Metropolitan Detroit area. This very agenda is mentioned in the mission of the institution which reads as follows:
Marygrove College, an independent Catholic liberal arts college sponsored by the Sisters, Servants of
the Immaculate Heart of Mary, is committed to fostering Christian values, to educating students from
diverse backgrounds, and to serving the people of Metropolitan Detroit and beyond. The fundamental
purpose of Marygrove College is to educate each student toward intellectual and professional competence; toward career flexibility through grounding in the liberal arts; and toward active compassion and
commitment. To this end, Marygrove provides a personalized learning environment which, through excellent teaching in its undergraduate, graduate, and continuing education programs, sets for its students
these goals:
Competence, the ability to understand and participate effectively in the promise of our evolving world.
Compassion, the capacity to care about and respect the worth and dignity of people.
Commitment, the will to act responsibly based upon one’s beliefs and to contribute to the building of a
more just and humane world.
As Marygrove College grows and strive to meet the demands of the incoming and current students, the
campus will always be true to each one of the Three C’s and remain a prominent presence within the
city of Detroit.

VOLUNTEERISM
AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY’S
RELAY4LIFE RALLY
Relay For Life®, the American Cancer Society's signature event, is a fun-filled overnight experience designed to bring together those who have been touched by cancer. At Relay, people from within the community gather to celebrate survivors, remember those lost to cancer, and to fight back against this disease. Relay participants help raise money and awareness to support the American Cancer Society in its
lifesaving mission to eliminate cancer as a major health issue. During Relay For Life ® events, teams of
people gather at schools, fairgrounds, or parks and take turns walking or running laps. The events are
held overnight to represent the fact that cancer never sleeps. Through the survivors' lap and the luminaria ceremony, we honor the people who have faced cancer first hand, and we remember those who
have been lost to this disease.
But, Relay isn't about taking laps -- it's about coming together in the fight against cancer. It’s a time to
remember those lost to this disease and celebrate those who have survived. It’s a place where people
connect with others, share the cancer experience, and find comfort and solace. And it's an opportunity to
build hope for a future where cancer no longer threatens the lives of the people we love.
As volunteers and donors, your efforts support research, education, advocacy, and services that allow
the American Cancer Society to offer help and hope to people across the country when they need it
most. By joining together at Relay, we celebrate life, friendship, and an opportunity to work to defeat cancer for future generations.
Each year, across the nation, one event brings together entire communities to take part in the fight
against cancer. That event is the American Cancer Society Relay For Life®. It’s a time and place where
people come to celebrate those who have survived cancer, remember those we’ve lost, and fight back
against a disease that touches too many lives. Won’t you join us this year and be a part of Relay?
It’s not just an opportunity to CELEBRATE, REMEMBER, and FIGHT BACK, your involvement will help
the American Cancer Society work toward a mission of eliminating cancer as major health issue and will
support much-needed services in your community. Thanks in part to the donations from Relay For Life
and other events, the Society is saving lives, helping those touched by cancer, and empowering people
to fight this disease all over the world.
If you want to be a part of the fight against cancer, sign up today for the Relay For Life of DetroitMarygrove. Our event will take place on June 21-22, 2008 at Marygrove College. If you’re interested in
learning more or have questions, please email us at [email protected] or call 248-663-3420.
The first Team Captain Meeting was scheduled on Thursday, April 3, 2008 at 7pm at Marygrove College
in the Student Center. For more info email [email protected] or call 248-663-3420.
“FIGHT BACK through research! THIS YEAR, selected Relay event(s) in our community are offering the
unique opportunity to participate first-hand in a landmark new study, the Cancer Prevention Study-3
(CPS-3).The American Cancer Society will be enrolling people into CPS-3, a long-term study that will
help researchers better identify the lifestyle, environmental, and genetic factors that cause or prevent
cancer. Please spread the word and visit the Cancer Prevention Study-3 website to find an enrollment
location near you and for more information about how to participate in research today for a cancer free

A Tradition Re-Born
Graduation ceremonies are held once per academic year on the second Saturday in May. For students completing requirements in December or August,
the actual date of completion will appear on the student transcript and diploma. All diplomas are distributed following the graduation ceremony.
Each prospective graduate will receive information on Baccalaureate and
graduation ceremonies, caps and gowns, invitations, class pictures, class
rings, commencement videotapes, Grad Gala, and Alumni Association Induction Luncheon. Undergraduate commencement activities are coordinated
through the Academic Events Committee and Student Affairs Division.
Graduation 2008 will be springing to life one of Marygrove’s most timehonored traditions! Commencement ceremonies will once again be held
right here on the Marygrove campus! The first ceremony was held way back
in 1966 with the last one was held May 11, 2002. It looks like the year 2008
is indeed the year for change with the new programs and organizations forming here at Marygrove. One big step is the re-forming of the Student Government, Residence Hall Association, and even that of this very student
newspaper that you are reading.
The graduating class of 2008 should feel privileged to be able to walk across
the Liberal Arts lawn and possible even through the actual gates of Marygrove College towards the statue of Mary, who looks out towards the city
waiting once again to salute the graduates.
This culminating event that salutes the achievements of our students is
scheduled for Saturday, May 10, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. In case of inclement
weather, ceremonies will be held at Greater Grace Temple at the same time.
The decision to move to Greater Grace, if necessary, will be on Wednesday,

!COURAGE!
Courage is a gift
That God passes out
It’s the distinctive pride inside
That lets them know what you’re about
It’s the gift that King had
The same is in the soldiers at Baghdad
It’s what kept the slaves from being sad
Courage is one of the things they had to have
To keep our heads held high
To keep our days bright without sigh
Baring in mind there’s no reason why
For HE said your burden’s His so don’t cry
When we go off into our day
Let’s make sure HE clears the way
If you do you’re bound to fray
Out troubles wherever you stay
The Spirits with you, have no doubt!
If you feel weak, give Him a SHOUT
There in a instance, that’s what HE’s about
Steer clear of fear stand tall and stout
Courage is yours, if you decide

He’s right within us, courage is too!

Spiritual Insight
ENDURING STRUGGLES
“I will consider it all joy whenever I fall into various trials. Knowing that the testing of my faith produces
endurance. And I will now let endurance finish its work, so that I may mature and complete, lacking in
nothing!” (James 1:2-4).
So many times we feel so burdened down, let down, or fed up. Not realizing that God has so much to
give us in these times of struggle. For it is then that He blesses us with the greatest of strengths. If
we only knew that He is molding us to be a perfected piece of His art, we would bask in the pain that
overcomes us at times.
Not every time is He putting burden upon us. But we know from the experience that Job went through
that He most definitely does test our faith. If you have yet to read the story of Job, it starts off like this:
Satan shows up with the angels to see the Lord and say’s to our savoir, “Hay! Your servant Job only
serves you because you are so good to him, if you take your blessings away, he would turn on you.”
Needless to say, Job was a spiritual warrior and Satan’s attacks did nothing to keep Job from serving
our Father. Job was blessed for his endurance! This is the case with a lot of people in our world.
How many times have you endured a hardship only to be rewarded in the end? I’ll tell you Marygrove,
nothing is like the pain he can hove you go through. Oh my is it so good! When he cuts you open,
he’s putting something in you, believe me! The greater the pain, the wider the cut, the bigger the gift.
Enjoy the pain Marygrove! He has plans for you!!! Until next time, it’s not just words! He loves you,
and so do I!!!
Vaughn
For this Editions study, lets take a look at Job
and see how he endured through his hardships.
Watch his friends too.
A PRAYER FOR TODAY!!!
Dear Lord…
There is so much trouble
In this world today
Because someone had too much to say.
Many souls have been severely hurt
Because the tongue was not alert.
I am afraid O Lord at times

So my life will fruitful be
As long as I walk with Thee.
Amen.
