F A T STOCK A P O U L T R Y
SHOW.
T h e fourth annual show was h e l d on Thursday
and F r i d a y last, and ws are glad to state that i t
was of a most suoneaslul character. The number
of entries o f stock d i d not vary much from that o f
1855, bnt the quality of the animals o f this year
was acknowledged t o be very superior even t o that
of 1855, high and well-deserved as were the encomiums passed upon i t . T h e improvement is no
doubt to be attributed very much to the efforts o f
this society a n d the prises i t offers. These efforts,
conducted by a practical committee, never flag, a n d
the money that i t subscribed shows a yearly i n crease. There was a sum of about £ 4 6 more offered for stock and poultry this year than i n 1856.
T h e amount awarded i n the several classes was
respectively as follows : —
F o u r a n d three-year-old short-horned
oxen,
steers, s n d heifers—Best, £ 1 0 ; second, £ 6 .
Short-horn fat cows—Best, £ 7 1 0 s : second,
£4.
steers, and H e i f e r s — B e s t , £ 7 1 0 . ; second, £ 4 .
F o u r and three-year-old cross-bred fiat oxen,
W e s t H i g h l a n d fat oxen, steers, a n d heifers,
and fat heifers o f any polled breed —Single prizes
of £ 5 each.
F a t shearling, of the Leicester, long-wool, S o u t h down, and cross breeds (between Leicester a n d
Cheviot, a n d Leicester a n d black-faced)—Best,
£ 5 ; second, £ 3 .
Pairs o f tat pigs, 12 a n d 15 months o l d , s n d
single fist pigs of any age—Beet, £ 8 ; second, £ 2 .
The poultry prises included elegant silver cups,
and those i n specie varied from 20sto5s.
T h e arrangements for both days, i n each department, were most ably made a n d carried out by
Messrs. Plows, W . Robinson, R . Emmerson, s n d
J . Stephenson, together w i t h the H o n . Secretaries,
M r Hodgson and M r Benson, a n d their assistants.
A great portion of the stock exhibited was eagerly bought u p by the butchers i n the course of
Thursday afternoon at high prices, to be transferred to the Christmas tables of their customers, and
we understand that every a n i m a l but one found a
purchaser. I n one case 10s per stone were paid.
M r Stowell'e prise steer fetched £ 6 0 .
T h e Society's D i n n e r was held at M r W r i g h t son's, the S u n I n n , and great praise is due to the
host for the admirable repast he furnished. T h e
chair was occupied b y James Farrer, E s q , M . P . ,
supported o n the right by H i t Grace the D u k e o f
Cleveland, a n d on t h e left b y F r a n c i s M e w b u r n ,
E s q . , C h i e f B a i l i f f o f D a r l i n g t o n . There wss a
large attendance of the clergy a n d gentry o f the
neighbourhood, a n d from the adjacent counties.
W e regret that our limits are insufficient for a report of the speeches.
D U R H A M W I N T E R ASSIZES.
T h e Judges o f Assize, the H o n . S I R W I L L I A M
E R L E , Knight, and R r s s K i x G c t u r i T , Esq., arrived i n D u r h a m o n Wednesday night, from N e w castle. O n Thursday, at ten they attended divine
service i n the Cathedral, immediately after which
they repaired t o the Courts to proceed w i t h the
business o f t h e Assizes. T h e calendar was o f an
average description, and there were no cases specially interesting to this locality

F L O O D n r T H I R I V E R T u t . — A f t e r one o f t h e
most r a p i d thaws ever remembered, the Teas rose
to an unusual height o n S u n d a r night last. O n
the previous F r i d a y the whole o f the country was
covered w i t h snow, which had lain for upwards of
a week, and the river was firmly frozen; but early
on Saturday morning, every vestige o f snow and
ice had disappeared, under the influence o f a storm
of rain and w i n d from the South. R a i n continued
to fall, and the river gradually rose, u n t i l at mid*
night on Sunday, i t attained i t s - m a x i m u m ; at this
time the whole of the factories on the river side
were more or less inundated, and the water entered
several houses at the B r i d g e E n d , and alto penetrated into the dye-house at Messrs. U l U t h o r n e a n d
LongetafFs establishment., where some trifling d a m age was done. A t M r D u n n ' s factory, t h e platform overhanging t h e river was carried away.
W i t h these exceptions, we are glad to learn no
casualty was occasioned
by the flood. O n
Sunday evening, the H i g h Force, a n d other waterfalls o n the river, presented a scene o f grandeur
seldom witnessed. T h e R i v e r G r e t a also, from
M o r t h a m B r i d g e , was a sublime spectacle, the
water being higher than has been seen for tome
years.
