Letter From The Pastor
Dear Parishioners:
Last week I was privileged to attend and concelebrate the ordination Mass of the
Church’s first Bishop for the Personal Ordinariate of the Chair of St. Peter. The Ordinarate
was established by Pope Benedict as the vehicle for Anglicans to be in full union with the

You are welcome to visit them for Mass and you
can receive communion. In the box to the left is the
prayer the congregation recites just before receiving
communion. It expresses more completely the prayer
we use in the Roman rite.
While very similar to our ritual, this rite uses many
different words, e.g. “thy,” “thou,” “saith,”
“vouchsafe,” et al. You will have no trouble following
the liturgy. It was a great day for our Church.

The First Sunday of Lent always retells the temptations of Jesus in the desert. Temptations are not sins. They
are opportunities to turn to God and rely on his mercy to help us make the correct choice. It would be a lot easier
if we were never tempted, but the victory is defeating the temptation. Holiness is overcoming the weakness and
growing in strength.
We should ask ourselves what our weakness is and how temptations lead me into the sin. Once that is in place,
ask yourself what I can do to build the strength to resist. For example, I might have the weakness of selfishness
[miserly, cheap, stingy, etc.]. Satan tempts us in these sins through fear, pride, superiority etc. If I am tempted by
fear, one positive approach is to make a list of all the times God has blessed me in my life — when I was, without,
wondering how I could afford this or that etc. — and remember how God opened the door to solutions.
If Satan is tempting me to superiority or judgment I could remember to pray, There but for the grace of God
go I! We have all seen someone fall from grace and it’s not pretty. Any of us can fall and perhaps we have without others seeing it. We need to pray for humble spirit of heart. Not the one who writes this article nor anyone
who reads it is the greatest gift of God to the world. Our talents come from God and his bountiful love. We have
to cooperate with those gifts, but they are still gifts. I must never be too presumptive that I am above it all.
Work on these and other ways of living more deeply the mercy of God found in Lent. When we work on these
areas of life and begin more and more to defeat the temptations, good deeds will emerge and others will
experience God’s mercy. St. John Chrysostom wrote, No act of virtue can be great if it is not followed by ad-
vantage for others. So, no matter how much time you spend fasting, no matter how much you sleep on a hard
floor and wear ashes and sigh continually, if you do no good to others, you do nothing great.
This Lent, let us do great things.

Covecrest Summer Camp: May 30 - June 5th — Tucked
away in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Georgia, Covecrest is a
long time favorite summer trip for Catholic teens! Once we
arrive at camp, we get to play and pray with new friends
from every corner of the country. The week of camp includes
the perfect balance of time to encounter Christ and time to
play. We will get to do everything from playing sports, high
ropes, and whitewater rafting to hearing dynamic talks,
spending time in small groups, and experiencing the Sacraments. Every week, a line-up of dynamic presenters, talented
musicians, and dedicated priests serve along with camp staff
to encourage a deeper relationship with Christ for each teen.

FIRST HOLY COMMUNION PREPARATION: In order to be
ready to start prepara on for First Holy Communion, students must complete one full year of Catholic Educa on,
beginning no sooner than First Grade. This requirement

Senior Bus Trip You may sign up now for the senior bus

$20.00 that includes a box lunch. Boarding will be at
6:30. There will be no bus trip in February.
Lighthouse CD “Being All In”
Young at Heart is an active church
group where all are welcome. However, we do tend to target our activities towards our members who are 50
years plus. We meet once a month on
Sundays, 2:30pm, MJFC, for movies, religious or health related talks, bingo, and other inter-active
activities. If you are not already a member, please consider joining our amazing group. You will enjoy your Sunday afternoon with food, drinks, door prizes and camaraderie. It’s only $5.00 a year to join. You have nothing to

The SVDP Vocations Ministry presents this review
of the radical, mind-bending, and recommended Lighthouse Catholic Media CD “Being All In.”
Do you remember the Gospel story of Jesus and the
rich young man? If you want to know what would have
happened if the young man had actually done what Jesus
told him, listen to this CD.
Eric Mahl’s vocation story takes him from playing in
the NFL with the Cleveland Browns, to roaming the
streets of Cleveland ministering to the homeless – all before the age of 30 – and eventually brought him to the
Divine Mercy National Shrine in Stockbridge, Massachusetts. Along the way, he chose to give away all his money, his possessions, and his lifestyle to serve God. He
gave the money to the poor – exactly what Jesus told the
rich young man.

Society of St. Vincent de Paul
Adult Faith Formation
In this Jubilee Year of Mercy, our Parish Society of St.
Vincent de Paul Conference thanks our award winning
students and all of our students who participated in the
Student Essay Contest, for enhancing our understanding
of the true graces obtained by serving Jesus in the suffering and in the
poor. Jesus' words to St. Faustina were that we must show mercy in
deeds, words and prayer. May we go out as Blessed Frederic Ozanam,
founder of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, and show our families
and our friends how our faith has inspired us to be humble servants to
Jesus in the poor. Our students are the future of our Church, and the
future servants of the poor. We thank them, and we congratulate them!
Thank you also to Colleen Orth for her enthusiasm and commitment in
service to the SSVDP and the youth of our Parish, as Chairman of the
Student Essay Contest, and to Manny Martinez, for making the
beautiful award medals. Students received $200.00 - $100.00 to keep
and $100.00 to donate to our SSVDP Parish Conference. Award
winners were the following:
Andrew Kalapatapu (2nd grade) - Andrew wrote that helping the
poor, can help you feel closer to God, and cause a warmness in your
heart. Andrew has experienced these feelings when giving out kits
for the homeless. In fact, he plans on using some of his earnings
today, to make more kits for the homeless.
Jasmine Manalastas (3rd grade) - Jasmine’s essay was full of
many words of wisdom. She stated that “Even if we have all the
money in the world, we would still not be truly happy. Helping the
poor will give us real happiness."
Liam Smith (5th grade) - Liam discussed the big effects that can be
caused by helping the poor. One of those effects is that it gives
people hope, and makes them want to learn more about Jesus.
Joshua Manalastas (5th grade) - Joshua’s essay talked about how
truly lucky he is to have his basic needs met for, such as a home and
food. He knows that helping the poor, will make him feel even
more thankful and rejoiced.
Jasmine Engelke (6th grade) - Jasmine went into great detail on the
many reasons it is important to help the poor, but she finished her
essay with the following important thought: "The real reason it is
important to help the poor, is indescribable, but it is what we are
called to do.
Nathan Wilson (8th grade) - Nathan’s essay reflected on how
developing relationships with those in need, develops your relationship
with the poor. Nathan wrote: “when you get out of your self-involved
lifestyle and look towards others, you can get closer to God."
We also thank the following students for submitting exceptional

Coquilla, Christine Dabuco, Ally Faulk, Jack Faulk, Laila Lizette

Steps for Students
5K Run/Walk
Did you know that St.
Vincent's parish supports
a mission in Guayaquil,
Ecuador? Yes, that's
right. Parishioners of St.
Vincent's have over the
years donated money
and items which have
helped build a school for
underprivileged children in a very poor neighborhood of
Guayaquil. The school is named St. Vincent de Paul after
our own parish school, and each year students from our
school donate their used uniforms which are sent to the
students in Guayaquil. On April 23, we will be holding
our annual Guayaquil Gala which provides the primary
source of funding to continue the operation of the school,
i.e. pay teacher salaries, buy needed equipment and assist
with student tuition. We are all called to spread our faith
and help our brothers in need. We need your support to
ensure the continued successful operation of this important mission. Please mark your calendars and plan to
attend the gala.

We are beginning with four areas of outreach.
1. Implement a group of Greeters at each Mass We hope to have
enough individuals committed in this area to develop three to four teams
of eight to ten greeters at each Mass on the weekend. The teams would then rotate which would
make the commitment for each team manageable.
2. Form a Phone Committee We have about 30-40 newly registered families every month. This
group would reach out to our newly registered parishioners by calling them shortly after they
register in the parish. We would like to build this team to be at least thirty people. The phone calls
could be made from your home.
3. Assist at Receptions These folks will help set up and serve receptions for all the newly registered families. We envision a reception to be offered quarterly.
4. Materials Development We want to provide information to our new families which is attractive and complete. This faction of the Welcome Committee will help improve the materials we
provide for new members.

In today’s Gospel, Jesus challenges us by
saying “Give, and gifts will be given to you;
good measure, packed together, shaken
down, and overflowing, will be poured into
your lap…” When we give to the poor, God indeed pours
his love, peace and joy into our hearts and into our lives. In
the month of January, through your gifts, the Society of St.
Vincent de Paul was able to assist 40 families or single persons including 45 children and 2 unborn babies, providing
$7045 in rent and lodging assistance, $480 in utilities assistance, $160 in food assistance, $160 assistance for medical
needs, $150 in travelers' aid, $50 in furniture assistance,
$50 in clothes and baby items, $50 for Mass stipends, and
in-kind gifts of $101 of toys for children of needy families.

Jesucristo es el rostro de la misericordia del Padre. -Papa Francisco
Anuncio del Jubileo de la Misericordia
La llamada de Jesús nos impulsa a cada uno de nosotros a no detenerse jamás en la
superficie de las cosas, sobre todo cuando estamos ante una persona. Estamos llamados a
mirar más allá, a centrarnos en el corazón para ver de cuánta generosidad es capaz cada
uno. Nadie puede ser excluido de la misericordia de Dios. Todos conocen el camino para
acceder a ella y la Iglesia es la casa que acoge a todos y no rechaza a nadie. Sus puertas
permanecen abiertas de par en par, para que quienes son tocados por la gracia puedan
encontrar la certeza del perdón. Cuanto más grande es el pecado, mayor debe ser el amor
que la Iglesia expresa hacia quienes se convierten. ¡Con cuánto amor nos mira Jesús!
¡Con cuánto amor cura nuestro corazón pecador! Jamás se asusta de nuestros pecados. Pensemos en el hijo
pródigo que, cuando decidió volver al padre, pensaba hacerle un discurso, pero el padre no lo dejó hablar, lo
abrazó (cf. Lc 15, 17-24). Así es Jesús con nosotros. «Padre, tengo muchos pecados...». —«Pero Él estará contento
si tú vas: ¡te abrazará con mucho amor! No tengas miedo».
Queridos hermanos y hermanas, he pensado con frecuencia de qué forma la Iglesia puede hacer más evidente su
misión de ser testigo de la misericordia. Es un camino que inicia con una conversión espiritual; y tenemos que
recorrer este camino. Por eso he decidido convocar un Jubileo extraordinario que tenga en el centro la
misericordia de Dios. Será un Año santo de la misericordia. Lo queremos vivir a la luz de la Palabra del Señor:
«Sed misericordiosos como el Padre» (cf. Lc 6, 36). Esto especialmente para los confesores: ¡mucha misericordia!
Este Año santo iniciará con la próxima solemnidad de la Inmaculada Concepción y se concluirá el 20 de noviembre
de 2016, domingo de Nuestro Señor Jesucristo Rey del universo y rostro vivo de la misericordia del Padre.
Encomiendo la organización de este Jubileo al Consejo pontificio para la promoción de la nueva evangelización,
para que pueda animarlo como una nueva etapa del camino de la Iglesia en su misión de llevar a cada persona el
Evangelio de la misericordia.
Estoy convencido de que toda la Iglesia, que tiene una gran necesidad de recibir misericordia, porque somos
pecadores, podrá encontrar en este Jubileo la alegría para redescubrir y hacer fecunda la misericordia de Dios,
con la cual todos estamos llamados a dar consuelo a cada hombre y a cada mujer de nuestro tiempo. No olvidemos
que Dios perdona todo, y Dios perdona siempre. No nos cansemos de pedir perdón. Encomendemos desde ahora
este Año a la Madre de la misericordia, para que dirija su mirada sobre nosotros y vele sobre nuestro camino:
nuestro camino penitencial, nuestro camino con el corazón abierto, durante un año, para recibir la indulgencia de
Dios, para recibir la misericordia de Dios.

Señor Jesucristo, tú nos has enseñado a ser misericordiosos como el Padre del cielo,
y nos has dicho que quien te ve, lo ve también a Él. Muéstranos tu rostro y obtendremos la salvación.
Tu mirada llena de amor liberó a Zaqueo y a Mateo de la esclavitud del dinero;
a la adúltera y a la Magdalena del buscar la felicidad solamente en una creatura;
hizo llorar a Pedro luego de la traición, y aseguró el Paraíso al ladrón arrepentido.
Haz que cada uno de nosotros escuche como propia la palabra que dijiste a la samaritana: ¡Si conocieras el don de Dios!
Tú eres el rostro visible del Padre invisible, del Dios que manifiesta su
omnipotencia sobre todo con el perdón y la misericordia:
haz que, en el mundo, la Iglesia sea el rostro visible de Ti, su Señor, resucitado y glorioso.
Tú has querido que también tus ministros fueran revestidos de debilidad
para que sientan sincera compasión por los que se encuentran en la ignorancia o en el error:
haz que quien se acerque a uno de ellos se sienta esperado, amado y perdonado por Dios.
Manda tu Espíritu y conságranos a todos con su unción para que el Jubileo de la Misericordia sea un año de gracia del Señor
y tu Iglesia pueda, con renovado entusiasmo, llevar la Buena Nueva a los pobres
proclamar la libertad a los prisioneros y oprimidos y restituir la vista a los ciegos.
Te lo pedimos por intercesión de María, Madre de la Misericordia,
a ti que vives y reinas con el Padre y el Espíritu Santo por los siglos de los siglos.

Cuaresma a las 6:00 PM en el templo.
Su Santidad, el Papa Francisco ha proclamado un Jubileo
Extraordinario de la Misericordia que nos permitirá enfocar y profundizar nuestra gratitud por la misericordia
amorosa de Dios.. El Año de la Misericordia incluirá el
uso de una Puerta Santa, una entrada especialmente
designado que tiene un significado espiritual y simbólico
para los católicos.
En este Año Jubilar de la Misericordia, que pasa a través
de una Puerta Santa es parte de la peregrinación que se
alienta a todos los católicos a hacer, ya sea durante un
viaje a Roma o un viaje a las catedrales o iglesias especialmente designados en sus propias diócesis. Estas peregrinaciones vienen con gracias especiales, y permiten que
cada uno de nosotros para compartir en las muchas bendiciones del Año Santo.
Ocho iglesias católicas de la Arquidiócesis servirán como
