February 7, 2016, Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Letter From The Pastor
Dear Parishioners:
In the beginning our faith was found only in Jerusalem. Peter and the rest of the
apostles stayed close to the familiar territory. Very soon after Pentecost they quickly went
out to the world to evangelize and minister to the Gospel of Jesus. As the spreading of
Christians grew, our Church became known as the Church in Ephesus, the Church in
Corinth, in Rome, Paris, all the way to Galveston-Houston.
Each of these “Churches” was and is headed by a successor to the Apostles. The local
bishop (Ordinary) is ordained to teach, sanctify and govern his particular area. As the dioceses grew it became
quite obvious that no one parish could handle the many needs of the people. Some tasks are too large such as the
Medical Center here in Houston for one parish. Other examples are pastoral care for the imprisoned, migrants,
mental health needs, adoptions, etc.
We have established the Archdiocesan Services Fund to help address these needs. There are 37 different
ministries supported by the DSF. Some of these ministries have several parts such as Correctional Ministries —
over 60,000 men and women in the federal facility, 26 state prisons units and 10 county jails are located within
the Archdiocese. Our own Fr. Steve Payne serves full time in this ministry. The DSF pays his salary and benefits
and provides the necessary financial support for the work. SVdP provides rooms and board.
We support the San Jose Clinic which brings needed medical help to the poor. For the past 93 years the Clinic
serves about 4,000 persons a year. It is the longest standing free clinic in the United States providing high quality
health care for others by serving low-income, underinsured and uninsurable individuals and families.
By now you should have received a letter from Cardinal DiNardo asking for your support through your prayers,
volunteering and financial gifts to raise the needed monies to further the mission of the Church of
Galveston-Houston. Our Catholic faith is lived as a part of a worldwide community. We belong to one another and
work with each other to further the love of God in our world. SVdP does not get to pick only its own charitable
work because we are a bigger family than just us.
Each of us is invited to join Cardinal DiNardo in his mission to care for the people of our Archdiocese. The DSF
theme this year is HIS MERCY ENDURES FOREVER from Psalm 136. Our support of the DSF Appeal brings a
great shower of God’s mercy to others. We may not see each recipient or ministry, but the poor, uneducated, sick,
imprisoned, lonely, desperate, et al. are touched by your generosity.
This week pray from your heart on how you can contribute to the mission of our archdiocese. Your generosity
will be a moment of God’s mercy for someone. Our Father in heaven will notice and remember for all eternity
your generosity and we cannot outdo God’s generosity.
Let us make mercy more abundant by our participation in this year’s DSF!
************************
This week we also begin the Holy Season of Lent. It feels a bit too soon but it is true. The earliest date for
Easter is March 22 and this year it is March 27. Remember that Wednesday is Ash Wednesday and is a day of fast
[one regular meal and two small meals] and abstinence [not eating meat].
It is a time for us to do acts of penance and examine our hearts and souls in how we have offended God and
others in order to prepare our hearts again to celebrate the joy of Easter. Some people give up deserts, some
candy, some sleep on the floor; go to Mass daily, etc. There are many ways to prepare for Easter joy.
Be sure to join us for a Potato soup lunch or dinner on Wednesday. Lunch is served after the 12:10 PM Mass
and after the 6:00 PM Mass. All are welcome.
Pax et bonum,
Msgr. Bill

ST. ANNE’S SOCIETY
Spring Study – “FREE” Leslie Hansen will lead us in a
study called FREE—Join us as we explore how to live a
life of true freedom. We will use the Ignatian Exam as a
guide to help us discern God’s will for our lives and to
identify disordered attachments that hinder our ability to
see and follow God’s will. If our choices grow out of
God’s will for our lives, we will become who God
planned us to be. We will be free. “Now the Lord is the
Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is
freedom.” 1 Cor. 3:17. Monsignor Jamail Family Center,

As members of St. Vincent de Paul's Young Adults
(SVDPYA), we strive to live out our Catholic faith in
both word and deed. We achieve this goal through our
service, spiritual formation, and social events in support
of one another, our community, and the Church as a
whole. Together, we take up the call of bringing Christ
into the world!
SVDPYA is centered around a 6:30 pm praise and
worship, 7pm Mass, and dinner every Tuesday evening
(except for the 1st Tuesday of the month), along with an
array of social and spiritual events. Come join us at one
of our upcoming events, or find our group on Facebook

Pilgrimage to Fatima-Lourdes
Pilgrimage to Fatima-Lourdes with Fr. Vincent Alexius

The Welcome CommiƩee invites YOU to join us as we move forward.
We are beginning with four areas of outreach.
1. Implement a group of Greeters at each Mass We hope to have enough individuals
commi ed in this area to develop three to four teams of eight to ten greeters at each
Mass on the weekend. The teams would then rotate which would make the commitment
for each team manageable.
2. Form a Phone CommiƩee We have about 30-40 newly registered families every month. This group would reach out
to our newly registered parishioners by calling them shortly a er they register in the parish. We would like to build
this team to be at least thirty people. The phone calls could be made from your home.
3. Assist at RecepƟons These folks will help set up and serve recep ons for all the newly registered families. We envision a recep on to be offered quarterly.
4. Materials Development We want to provide informa on to our new families which is a rac ve and complete.
This fac on of the Welcome Commi ee will help improve the materials we provide for new members.
Many are needed to make this dream a success. Please help make St. Vincent de Paul parish a welcoming Community
United in Faith. If you are interested in joining us, please contact Mary Gosline in the parish office. You may call 713667-9111 and ask for Mary or e-mail [email protected]. We also have informa on available on the website

Estamos llamados a
No tengas miedo».
No olvidemos
Tu mirada llena de amor liberó a Zaqueo y a Mateo de la esclavitud del dinero;
a la adúltera y a la Magdalena del buscar la felicidad solamente en una creatura;
